Abstract

Systematic determination of the crystal-field (CF) potential in PrCu2Si2 compounds to analyze their quadrupole effects shows that the CF potential, rather than the quadrupolar Kondo effect, causes low temperature quenching Q2. The difference in temperature dependencies of the quadrupole moments of PrCu2Si2, HoCu2Si2 and NdCu2Si2 confirms the absence of quadrupolar effect on quenching. The linear contribution pattern of CF Schottky to the C/T vs T2 curve indicates the linear expression in specific heat, while the CF potential value demonstrates the hybridization effect of PrCu2Si2 on the CF potential.

Abstract

[Pr.sub.3]In has displayed an antiferrromagnetic transition at 12K, which might be due to the exchange-generated admixture of higher lying crystal field levels into the singlet ground state. A clear dispersion of a crystal field excitation is observed at 4K and the dispersion of the crystal field excitation has vanished above 100K.

Abstract

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy to study the magnetic excitations spectra throughout the Brioullion zone in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$. While the $x=0.096$ sample is near optimal superconductivity with $T_c=20$ K and has coexisting static incommensurate magnetic order, the $x=0.15,0.18$ samples are electron-overdoped with reduced $T_c$ of 14 K and 8 K, respectively, and have no static antiferromagnetic (AF) order. In previous INS work on undoped ($x=0$) and electron optimally doped ($x=0.1$) samples, the effect of electron-doping was found to modify spin waves in the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ below $\sim$100 meV and induce a neutron spin resonance at the commensurate AF ordering wave vector that couples with superconductivity. While the new data collected on the $x=0.096$ sample confirms the overall features of the earlier work, our careful temperature dependent study of the resonance reveals that the resonance suddenly changes its $Q$-width below $T_c$ similar to that of the optimally hole-doped iron pnictides Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. In addition, we establish the dispersion of the resonance and find it to change from commensurate to transversely incommensurate with increasing energy. Upon further electron-doping to overdoped iron pnictides with $x=0.15$ and 0.18, the resonance becomes weaker and transversely incommensurate at all energies, while spin excitations above $\sim$100 meV are still not much affected. Our absolute spin excitation intensity measurements throughout the Brillouin zone for $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$ confirm the notion that the low-energy spin excitation coupling with itinerant electron is important for superconductivity in these materials, even though the high-energy spin excitations are weakly doping dependent., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

We report inelastic neutron-scattering measurements of crystal-field transitions in PrFeAsO, PrFeAsO0.87F0.13, and NdFeAsO0.85F0.15. Doping with fluorine produces additional crystal-field excitations, providing evidence that there are two distinct charge environments around the rare-earth ions, with probabilities that are consistent with a random distribution of dopants on the oxygen sites. The 4f electrons of the Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions have nonmagnetic and magnetic ground states, respectively, indicating that the enhancement of T-c compared to LaFeAsO1-xFx is not due to rare-earth magnetism.

Abstract

Spectra of inelastic neutron scattering on polycrystalline samples of PrNi2and Pr0.1La0.9Ni2measured at the pulsed reactor IBR2 show an additional line splitting of a magnetic excitation which can be explained by a strong coupling of the Γ3- Γ5crystalline field excitation to a low energy phonon analogous to that observed in CeAl2. This interpretation is supported by experiments on Pr0.05Y0.95Ni2where the conditions of a resonant coupling are not given.

Abstract

Results of inelastic neutron scattering from a series of the cubic RNi2(R = Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er and Tm) compounds are presented. From the spectra for the paramagnetic phase the crystalline electric field parameters A4and A6were determined. The values of A4are positive and of the same order of magnitude, whereas the A6-values have more scatter. The line widths for the Pr, Tb and Tm compounds are substantially larger than for the others. An interpretation of the spectra from the ordered samples has been attempted by taking into account magnetic dipole and quadrupolar interaction of the 4f-electrons in the mean field approximation.
