Graphene-based photodetectors have shown responsivities up to 10$^8$A/W and photoconductive gains up to 10$^{8}$ electrons per photon. These photodetectors rely on a highly absorbing layer in close proximity of graphene, which induces a shift of the graphene chemical potential upon absorption, hence modifying its channel resistance. However, due to the semi-metallic nature of graphene, the readout requires dark currents of hundreds of $\mu$A up to mA, leading to high power consumption needed for the device operation. Here we propose a novel approach for highly responsive graphene-based photodetectors with orders of magnitude lower dark current levels. A shift of the graphene chemical potential caused by light absorption in a layer of colloidal quantum dots, induces a variation of the current flowing across a metal-insulator-graphene diode structure. Owing to the low density of states of graphene near the neutrality point, the light-induced shift in chemical potential can be relatively large, dramatically changing the amount of current flowing across the insulating barrier, and giving rise to a novel type of gain mechanism. This readout requires dark currents of hundreds of nA up to few $\mu$A, orders of magnitude lower than other graphene-based photodetectors, while keeping responsivities of $\sim$70A/W in the infrared, almost two orders of magnitude higher compared to established germanium on silicon and indium gallium arsenide infrared photodetectors. We report high room-temperature mobility in single layer graphene grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) after wet transfer on SiO$_2$ and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. By removing contaminations trapped at the interfaces between single-crystal graphene and hBN, we achieve mobilities up to$\sim70000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at room temperature and$\sim120000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at 9K. These are over twice those of previous wet transferred graphene and comparable to samples prepared by dry transfer. We also investigate the combined approach of thermal annealing and encapsulation in polycrystalline graphene, achieving room temperature mobilities$\sim30000 cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$. These results show that, with appropriate encapsulation and cleaning, room temperature mobilities well above $10000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ can be obtained in samples grown by CVD and transferred using a conventional, easily scalable PMMA-based wet approach.

The data from the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft have revealed several surprising characteristics about the surface of Mercury, leading to its classification as a geochemical endmember among the terrestrial planets. Some of these features include elevated abundances of up to 3 wt% S, C enrichment as high as 4 wt% over the local mean in low reflectance materials (LRM), Na up to 5 wt% at high northern latitudes, and Fe abundances typically lower than 2 wt% [e.g., 1–4]. The S and Fe concentrations have been used to infer that Mercury’s igneous history evolved under highly reduced oxygen fugacity conditions between 2.6 and 7.3 log10 units below the iron-wüstite buffer [e.g., 5], which is more reducing than any other terrestrial planet in the solar system [e.g., 6]. This highly reduced nature has important consequences for the differentiation and thermal/magmatic evolution of Mercury. While the immense amount of data collected by MESSENGER revealed Mercury as a geochemical endmember, this new knowledge gained raised additional questions that necessitate continued exploration of the planet. Fortunately, BepiColombo launched in October of 2018, and this joint ESA/JAXA dual-orbiter spacecraft is the most ambitious effort yet attempted to explore Mercury [e.g., 7]. Looking beyond BepiColombo, there are major aspects of Mercury’s geochemical character and evolution for which significant knowledge gaps can be dramatically improved with data acquired from the planet’s surface via in situ landed science.

Mariner 10 provided our first closeup reconnaissance of Mercury during its three flybys in 1974 and 1975. MESSENGER’s 2011–2015 orbital investigation enabled numerous discoveries, several of which led to substantial or complete changes in our fundamental understanding of the planet. Among these were the unanticipated, widespread presence of volatile elements (e.g., Na, K, S); a surface with extremely low Fe abundance whose darkening agent is likely C; a previously unknown landform—hollows— that may form by volatile sublimation from within rocks exposed to the harsh conditions on the surface; a history of expansive effusive and explosive volcanism; substantial radial contraction of the planet from interior cooling; offset of the dipole moment of the internal magnetic field northward from the geographic equator by ~20% of the planet’s radius; crustal magnetization, attributed at least in part to an ancient field; unexpected seasonal variability and relationships among exospheric species and processes; and the presence in permanently shadowed polar terrain of water ice and other volatile materials, likely to include complex organic compounds. Mercury’s highly chemically reduced and unexpectedly volatile-rich composition is unique among the terrestrial planets and was not predicted by earlier hypotheses for the planet’s origin. As an end-member of terrestrial planet formation, Mercury holds unique clues about the original distribution of elements in the earliest stages of the Solar System and how planets (and exoplanets) form and evolve in close proximity to their host stars. The BepiColombo mission promises to expand our knowledge of this planet and to shed light on some of the mysteries revealed by the MESSENGER mission. However, several fundamental science questions raised by MESSENGER’s pioneering exploration of Mercury can only be answered with in situ measurements from the planet’s surface.

The current best estimates of Bennu’s gravity field will be presented, based on the independent solutions from four different teams involved on the OSIRIS-REx mission. The discovery of ejected particles about Bennu that may remain in orbit for several days or more provide a unique opportunity to probe the gravity field to higher degree and order than possible by using conventional spacecraft tracking. However, the non-gravitational forces acting on these particles must also be characterized, and their impact on solution accuracy must be assessed. This talk will present the latest results from the mission, incorporating spacecraft tracking from the lowest orbit in which the satellite will be during the mission.

One of the intriguing results of NASA's Dawn mission is the composition and structure of the Main Asteroid Belt's only known dwarf planet, Ceres [1]. It has a top layer of dehydrated clays and salts [2] and an icy-rocky mantle [3,4]. It is widely known that the asteroid belt failed to accrete as a planet by resonances between the Sun and Jupiter. About 20-30 asteroids >100 km diameter are probably differentiated protoplanets [5]. 1) how many more and which ones are fragments of protoplanets? 2) How many and which ones are primordial rubble piles left over from condensation of the solar nebula? 3) How would we go about gaining better and more complete characterization of the mass, interior structure and composition of the Main Belt asteroid population? 4) What is the relationship between asteroids and ocean worlds? Bulk parameters such as the mass, density, and porosity, are important to characterize the structure of any celestial body, and for asteroids in particular, they can shed light on the conditions in the early solar system. Asteroid density estimates exist but currently they are often based on assumed properties of taxonomic classes, or through astronomical survey data where interactions with asteroids are weak at best resulting in large measurement uncertainty. We only have direct density estimates from spacecraft encounters for a few asteroids at this time. Knowledge of the asteroids is significant not only to understand their role in solar system workings, but also to assess their potential as space resources, as impact hazards on Earth, or even as harboring life forms. And for the distant future, we want to know if the idea put forth in a contest sponsored by Physics Today, to surface the asteroids into highly reflecting, polished surfaces and use them as a massively segmented mirror for astrophysical exploration [6], is feasible.

Small bodies record the chemical, physical, and dynamical processes that gave birth to and shaped the solar system. The great variety of small bodies reflects the diversity of both their genesis and their histories. The DARe mission conducts a critical test of how small body populations reflect a history of planetary migration and planetesimal scattering. This understanding is crucial for planning future NASA missions and placing current and past missions into context.

The Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) spacecraft conducted the mapping of the gravity field of the Moon from March 1, 2012 to May 29, 2012. The twin spacecraft acquired highly precise K Band range-rate (KBRR) intersatellite ranging data and Deep Space Network (DSN) data during this prime mission phase from altitudes of 15 to 75 km above the lunar surface over three lunar months. We have processed these data using the NASA GSFC GEODYN orbit determination and geodetic parameter estimation program, and we have determined gravity fields up to degree and order 420 in spherical harmonics. The new gravity solutions show improved correlations with LOLA-derived topography to high degree and order and resolve many lunar features in the geopotential with a resolution of less than 30 km, including for example the central peak of the crater Tycho. We discuss the methodology used for the processing of the GRAIL data, the quality of the orbit determination on the GRAIL satellites and the derivation of the solutions, and their evaluation with independent data, including Lunar Prospector. We show that with these new GRAIL gravity solutions, we can now fit the low altitude, extended mission Lunar Prospector tracking data better than with any previous gravity model that included the LP data.

A lunar gravity field model up to degree and order 100 in spherical harmonics, named SGM 100i, has been determined from SELENE and historical tracking data, with an emphasis on using same-beam S-band differential VLBI data obtained in the SELENE mission between January 2008 and February 2009. Orbit consistency throughout the entire mission period of SELENE as determined from orbit overlaps for the two sub-satellites of SELENE involved in the VLBI tracking improved consistently from several hundreds of metres to several tens of metres by including differential VLBI data. Through orbits that are better determined, the gravity field model is also improved by including these data. Orbit determination performance for the new model shows improvements over earlier 100th degree and order models, especially for edge-on orbits over the deep far side. Lunar Prospector orbit determination shows an improvement of orbit consistency from I-day predictions for 2-day arcs of 6 m in a total sense, with most improvement in the along and cross-track directions. Data fit for the types and satellites involved is also improved. Formal errors for the lower degrees are smaller, and the new model also shows increased correlations with topography over the far side. The estimated value for the lunar GM for this model equals 4902.80080 +/- 0.0009 cu km/sq s (10 sigma). The lunar degree 2 potential Love number k2 was also estimated, and has a value of 0.0255 +/- 0.0016 (10 sigma as well).
