Of 1.3 million active duty service members, the majority have family responsibilities; 54.3% are married, and 41.2% have at least one child. The authors sought to determine existing areas of focus in military family research and to identify areas that are currently understudied. The authors queried four literature databases from January 2014 to May 2017, and 2,502 articles were identified in the initial catchment. All 595 article abstracts that met inclusion criteria were sorted into one or more of 12 topics. Topics with the highest number of articles included Mental Health and Care (n = 276), Adult/Couple Partner Relationships (n = 247), and Deployment Issues (n = 244). Topics with sparse articles included Maternal/Child & Newborn Health (n = 27), Health Promotion (n = 10), and Special Heath Care Needs (n = 4). The three topics with the highest number of articles reflect interdependent and overlapping themes and showcase the importance of family relationships to the operational readiness of active duty members. The topics with fewer numbers of articles highlight areas where more evidence is needed. Over the past decade, leading health care organizations have recommended doubling the number of doctorally prepared nurses to meet the future demands of health care. In 2018, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties committed to move all nurse practitioner degree programs to the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree by 2025. As more and more doctorally prepared nurses enter the workforce, other nurses are considering returning to school for a terminal degree. Our health care landscape is rapidly changing. With the aging population and seemingly increasing outbreak of communicable diseases, it is expected that there will be a continued demand for inpatient/critical care providers. The current COVID-19 pandemic provides a glimpse of a health care system in severe provider shortage. Adult-gerontology acute nurse practitioners (AGACNPs) can play a vital part in relieving that shortage. But with the increased role, there is an increased responsibility and need for expansion of AGACNP skill set. This includes the training and utilization of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). The case reports and data available from countries that have already combated COVID-19 outbreak show POCUS can play a key part in managing critically ill patients on isolation precautions. With a paucity of literature on professional organization membership by nurse practitioners (NPs), the authors base the discussion of the personal benefits associated with membership on literature focusing on clinicians other than NPs and their personal experiences as members of multiple organizations. Membership is described as related to NP socialization, engagement, networking, mentorship, advocacy, policy, leadership development, research dissemination, professional development, and volunteerism. In addition to encouraging active participation in one or more professional organizations, the need for research into factors influencing the degree to which NPs participate in organizations and the associated benefits is identified. Postgraduate training, otherwise termed residency or fellowship training, for nurse practitioners is a growing trend. Many new graduates are seeking intensive and immersive clinical experiences supported by evidence-based didactic learning directly related to their clinical experience. Although education is an essential component of good nursing practice, clinical practice proficiency does not equate to competence in academia. Expert clinicians are not automatically expert educators. However, more and more academic institutions are relying on full-time clinicians to assume academic teaching positions. The decision to transition from clinical practice to academia requires careful consideration of numerous personal and professional issues.
