Having first come across the name Callimachus in the opening line of Ezra Pound’s ‘Homage to Sextus Propertius’, I became enticed by the so called ‘shades of Callimachus’ described therein.  His work carries such variety within it, from odes and hymns to critical discussions and the epigrams which are of particular interest to me, that I was surprised that nothing of his had ever invaded the prescribed texts in the course of my study of Classical literature.  Here, I submit translations of Epigrams 41, 43 and 58 (as numbered by Pfeiffer).  This small selection, to my mind at least, captures some of the tone and beauty of language evident in the sixty-four epigrams that are extant (the Byzantine encyclopaedia, Suda, numbers his epigrammatical works in the region of 800).  What attracts me to these short writings, and to these particular three, is the atmospheric tone and substance of feeling created in such a brief number of lines, the essence of which one can only hope to communicate in some measure through an English translation.

The Stac Fada Member (Stoer Group) is a ~1.2 Ga melt‐rich impact breccia preserved and intermittently exposed along the NW coast of Scotland. Using a combination of x‐ray diffraction and micro‐Raman spectroscopy, we identify potential coesite that is spatially associated with micron‐sized diamonds, as well as disordered carbon phases. Comparing the graphite G‐band of disordered carbon phases in the impact breccia to samples from underlying units indicates that most of the carbon in the Stoer Group was ultimately derived from the underlying Lewisian basement. Disordered carbon phases within the Stac Fada Member have been modified by mild heating within a hot ejecta blanket rather than shock pressure. We also report the first evidence for impact diamonds discovered within the Stac Fada Member. These diamonds have an average Raman shift of 1328.5 cm−1 and are present within both the impact breccia and the shocked gneiss clasts that are present in sandstones directly underlying the Stac Fada Member contact, and within sandstone rafts entrapped in the unit. These findings have implications for the timing of deposition of the Stac Fada Member, which must have occurred after ballistic ejection of Lewisian basement clasts during the impact event. A probe for hydrophobic, pi-stacking interactions in solvent systems, both aqueous and mixed aqueous, is reported.

Research has been conducted on the crystal packing of bromide derivatives. Results indicate the importance of synergism between pi-stacking interactions and steric substituent effects.

A study concerning the preparations of bromide derivatives is analyzed. Propensity of the title compounds to intramolecularly stack aromatic substituents in water solvents and in solid state is discussed.

A study was conducted on an indirect mechanism for the effect of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) on peptide conformation. The findings indicate that the alcoholic cosolvent disrupts the solvent shell to stabilize the helical state preferentially. Moreover, aqueous TFE at 5-15 mol % induces similar results for various physicochemical phenomena, including helicity in polypeptides. This refutes a mechanism involving selective direct interaction between cosolvent and peptide conformers or solvent probe.

Experiments with trifluoroethanol (TFE) solutions containing Ac-Pro-NHMe in the 0-15 mol % range provide thermodynamic proof concerning the helix-enhancing effect of aliphatic alcohols. Specifically, TFE-induced changes were observed in the formation energetics of single amide-amide intramolecular hydrogen bonds and helices. The role of TFE in the solvation of amides was also confirmed from the increased rates of interconversion of s-cis/s-trans amide conformers of acetylproline.

Experimental studies demonstrate that decumulation of allenes from a six-membered ring is enough to induce the cope ring expansion of 1, 5-cyclodecadienes. NMR experiments reveal the stereospecificity of the ring expansions, and the rearrangement follows first order kinetics. The activation energy of the rearrangement is smaller than that of the divinyl analog.

Beta, gamma-unsaturated esters, contaminated by Ca, 1% methyl (E, Z)-3-phenyl-2-butenoates or ethyl (E,Z)-3-phenyl-2-butenoates, result from the reaction of 3-phenylcyclobutenone and tributylphosphine in methanol or ethanol. Analogous ring opening of 3-phenylcyclobutenone is faster than that of 3-pentylcyclobutenone.

Alpha,alpha'-m-xylylene-N,N'-bis-2-phenylpyridinium bromide was found to maintain a large proportion of its conformational distribution in a solvent-dependent intramolecular hydrocarbon cluster.
