1. A second radio flare from the tidal disruption event AT2020vwl: a delayed outflow ejection?

Abstract

We present the discovery of a second radio flare from the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2020vwl via long-term monitoring radio observations. Late-time radio flares from TDEs are being discovered more commonly, with many TDEs showing radio emission 1000s of days after the stellar disruption, but the mechanism that powers these late-time flares is uncertain. Here we present radio spectral observations of the first and second radio flares observed from the TDE AT2020vwl. Through detailed radio spectral monitoring, we find evidence for two distinct outflow ejection episodes, or a period of renewed energy injection into the pre-existing outflow. We deduce that the second radio flare is powered by an outflow that is initially slower than the first flare, but carries more energy and accelerates over time. Through modelling the long-term optical and UV emission from the TDE as arising from an accretion disc, we infer that the second radio outflow launch or energy injection episode occurred approximately at the time of peak accretion rate. The fast decay of the second flare precludes environmental changes as an explanation, while the velocity of the outflow is at all times too low to be explained by an off-axis relativistic jet. Future observations that search for any link between the accretion disc properties and late time radio flares from TDEs will aid in understanding what powers the radio outflows in TDEs, and confirm if multiple outflow ejections or energy injection episodes are common., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ. Abstract

Mode-locked lasers are of interest for applications such as biological imaging, non-linear frequency conversion, and single-photon generation. In the infrared, chip-integrated mode-locked lasers have been demonstrated through integration of laser diodes with low-loss photonic circuits. However additional challenges, such as a higher propagation loss and smaller alignment tolerances have prevented the realization of such lasers in the visible range. Here, we demonstrate the first chip-integrated mode-locked diode laser in the visible using an integrated photonic circuit for cavity extension. Based on a gallium arsenide gain chip and a low-loss silicon nitride feedback circuit, the laser is passively mode-locked using a saturable absorber implemented by focused ion beam milling. At a center wavelength of 642 nm, the laser shows an average output power of 3.4 mW, with a spectral bandwidth of 1.5 nm at a repetition rate of 7.84 GHz., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Central Venous Lines (C-Lines) and Arterial Lines (A-Lines) are routinely used in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) for blood sampling, medication administration, and high-frequency blood pressure measurement. Judiciously accessing these lines is important, as over-utilization is associated with significant in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Documenting the frequency of line-access is an important step in reducing these adverse outcomes. Unfortunately, the current gold-standard for documentation is manual and subject to error, omission, and bias. The high-frequency blood pressure waveform data from sensors in these lines are often noisy and full of artifacts. Standard approaches in signal processing remove noise artifacts before meaningful analysis. However, from bedside observations, we characterized a distinct artifact that occurs during each instance of C-Line or A-Line use. These artifacts are buried amongst physiological waveform and extraneous noise. We focus on Machine Learning (ML) models that can detect these artifacts from waveform data in real-time - finding needles in needle stacks, in order to automate the documentation of line-access. We built and evaluated ML classifiers running in real-time at a major children's hospital to achieve this goal. We demonstrate the utility of these tools for reducing documentation burden, increasing available information for bedside clinicians, and informing unit-level initiatives to improve patient safety., Comment: Machine Learning For Health Care 2024 (MLHC)

4. A Contact Binary Mis-Classified as an Ellipsoidal Variable: Complications for Detached Black Hole Searches

Abstract

Identifying sources exhibiting ellipsoidal variability in large photometric surveys is becoming a promising method to search for candidate detached black holes in binaries. This technique aims to exploit the orbital-phase dependent modulation in optical photometry caused by the black hole distorting the shape of the luminous star to constrain the mass ratio of the binary. Without understanding if, or how much, contamination is present in the candidate black hole samples produced by this new technique it is hard to leverage them for black hole discovery. Here, we follow up one of the best candidates identified from Gaia Data Release 3, Gaia DR3 4042390512917208960, with a radial velocity campaign. Combined photometric and radial velocity modelling, along with spectral disentangling, suggests that the true mass ratio (mass of the unseen object divided by the mass of the luminous star) is an order of magnitude smaller than that inferred assuming the modulations arise from ellipsoidal variability. We therefore infer that this system is likely a contact binary, or on the boundary of both stars nearly filling their Roche lobes, however, further observations are required to confidently detect the secondary. We find that the well-known problem of discriminating between ellipsoidal and contact binary light curves results in a larger contamination from contact binaries than previously suggested. Until ellipsoidal variables can be reliably distinguished from contact binaries, samples of black hole candidates selected based on ellipsoidal variability are likely to be highly contaminated by contact binaries or similar systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. 16 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. 5. Inferring system parameters from the bursts of the accretion-powered pulsar IGR J17498-2921

Abstract

Thermonuclear (type-I) bursts exhibit properties that depend both on the local surface conditions of the neutron stars on which they ignite, as well as the physical parameters of the host binary system. However, constraining the system parameters requires a comprehensive method to compare the observed bursts to simulations. We have further developed the beansp code for this purpose and analysed the bursts observed from IGR J17498-2921, a 401-Hz accretion-powered pulsar, discovered during it's 2011 outburst. We find good agreement with a model having H-deficient fuel with X = 0.15 +/- 0.4, and CNO metallicity Z=0.0014^{+0.0004}_{-0.0003}, about a tenth of the solar value. The model has the system at a distance of 5.7^{+0.6}_{-0.5} kpc, with a massive (approx. 2 M_sun) neutron star and a likely inclination of 60 deg. We also re-analysed the data from the 2002 outburst of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. For that system we find a substantially closer distance than previously inferred, at 2.7 +/- 0.3 kpc, likely driven by a larger degree of burst emission anisotropy. The other system parameters are largely consistent with the previous analysis. Abstract

Quasi-Periodic Eruptions (QPEs) are luminous X-ray outbursts recurring on hour timescales, observed from the nuclei of a growing handful of nearby low-mass galaxies. Their physical origin is still debated, and usually modeled as (a) accretion disk instabilities or (b) interaction of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with a lower mass companion in an extreme mass-ratio inspiral (EMRI). EMRI models can be tested with several predictions related to the short- and long-term behavior of QPEs. In this study, we report on the ongoing 3.5-year NICER and XMM-Newton monitoring campaign of eRO-QPE1, which is known to exhibit erratic QPEs that have been challenging for the simplest EMRI models to explain. We report 1) complex, non-monotonic evolution in the long-term trends of QPE energy output and inferred emitting area; 2) the disappearance of the QPEs (within NICER detectability) in October 2023, then reappearance by January 2024 at a luminosity $\sim$100x fainter (and temperature $\sim$3x cooler) than initial discovery; 3) radio non-detections with MeerKAT and VLA observations partly contemporaneous with our NICER campaign (though not during outbursts); and 4) the presence of a possible $\sim$6-day modulation of the QPE timing residuals, which aligns with the expected nodal precession timescale of the underlying accretion disk. Our results tentatively support EMRI-disk collision models powering the QPEs, and we demonstrate that the timing modulation of QPEs may be used to jointly constrain the SMBH spin and disk density profile., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We present an extensive radio monitoring campaign of the nuclear transient eRASSt J234403-352640 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, one of the most X-ray luminous TDE candidates discovered by the SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey. The observations reveal a radio flare lasting more than 1000 d, coincident with the X-ray, UV, optical, and infra-red flare of this transient event. Through modelling of the 10 epochs of radio spectral observations obtained, we find that the radio emission is well-described by an expanding synchrotron emitting region, consisting of a single ejection of material launched coincident with the optical flare. We conclude that the radio flare properties of eRASSt J234403-352640 are consistent with the population of radio-emitting outflows launched by non-relativistic tidal disruption events, and that the flare is likely due to an outflow launched by a tidal disruption event (but could also be a due to a new AGN accretion event) in a previously turned-off AGN., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

10. Rapid evolution of the recurrence time in the repeating partial tidal disruption event eRASSt J045650.3-203750

Abstract

In this letter, we present the results from further X-ray and UV observations of the nuclear transient eRASSt J045650.3-203750 (hereafter J0456-20). We detected five repeating X-ray and UV flares from J0456-20, making it one of the most promising repeating partial tidal disruption event (pTDE) candidates. More importantly, we also found rapid changes in the recurrence time $T_\text{recur}$ of the X-ray flares by modelling the long-term X-ray light curve of J0456-20. $T_\text{recur}$ first decreased rapidly from about 300 days to around 230 days. It continued to decrease to around 190 days with an indication of a constant $T_\text{recur}$ evidenced from the latest three cycles. Our hydrodynamic simulations suggest that, in the repeating pTDE scenario, such rapid evolution of $T_\text{recur}$ could be reproduced if the original star is a $1~\mathrm{M}_\odot$ main-sequence star near the terminal age and loses nearly 80-90% of its mass during the initial encounter with a supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass around $10^5~\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The inferred mass loss of 0.8-0.9 $\mathrm{M}_\odot$ is higher than the estimated value of around 0.13 $\mathrm{M}_\odot$ from observation, which could be explained if the radiation efficiency is low (i.e. $\ll0.1$). Abstract

We present a low-loss, compact, hollow core optical fibre (HCF) cell integrated with single mode fibre (SMF). The cell is designed to be filled with atomic vapour and used as a component in photonic quantum technologies, with applications in quantum memory and optical switching. We achieve a total insertion loss of 0.6(2) dB at 780 nm wavelength via graded index fibre to ensure efficient mode matching coupled with anti-reflection coatings to minimise loss at the SMF-HCF interfaces. We also present numerical modelling of these interfaces, which can be undertaken efficiently without the need for finite element simulation. We encapsulate the HCF core by coupling to the SMF inside a support capillary, enhancing durability and facilitating seamless integration into existing fibre platforms.

12. Transient fading X-ray emission detected during the optical rise of a tidal disruption event

Abstract

We report on the SRG/eROSITA detection of ultra-soft ($kT=47^{+5}_{-5}$ eV) X-ray emission ($L_{\mathrm{X}}=2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) from the tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate AT 2022dsb $\sim$14 days before peak optical brightness. As the optical luminosity increases after the eROSITA detection, then the 0.2--2 keV observed flux decays, decreasing by a factor of $\sim 39$ over the 19 days after the initial X-ray detection. Multi-epoch optical spectroscopic follow-up observations reveal transient broad Balmer emission lines and a broad He II 4686A emission complex with respect to the pre-outburst spectrum. Despite the early drop in the observed X-ray flux, the He II 4686A complex is still detected for $\sim$40 days after the optical peak, suggesting the persistence of an obscured, hard ionising source in the system. Three outflow signatures are also detected at early times: i) blueshifted H$\alpha$ emission lines in a pre-peak optical spectrum, ii) transient radio emission, and iii) blueshifted Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines. The joint evolution of this early-time X-ray emission, the He II 4686A complex and these outflow signatures suggests that the X-ray emitting disc (formed promptly in this TDE) is still present after optical peak, but may have been enshrouded by optically thick debris, leading to the X-ray faintness in the months after the disruption. If the observed early-time properties in this TDE are not unique to this system, then other TDEs may also be X-ray bright at early times and become X-ray faint upon being veiled by debris launched shortly after the onset of circularisation., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS on 2023-08-02. 19 pages, 16 figures and 10 tables

Abstract

A tidal disruption event (TDE) occurs when a star is destroyed by a supermassive black hole. Broadband radio spectral observations of TDEs trace the emission from any outflows or jets that are ejected from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole. However, radio detections of TDEs are rare, with less than 20 published to date, and only 11 with multi-epoch broadband coverage. Here we present the radio detection of the TDE AT2020vwl and our subsequent radio monitoring campaign of the outflow that was produced, spanning 1.5 years post-optical flare. We tracked the outflow evolution as it expanded between $10^{16}$ cm to $10^{17}$ cm from the supermassive black hole, deducing it was non-relativistic and launched quasi-simultaneously with the initial optical detection through modelling the evolving synchrotron spectra of the event. We deduce that the outflow is likely to have been launched by material ejected from stream-stream collisions (more likely), the unbound debris stream, or an accretion-induced wind or jet from the supermassive black hole (less likely). AT2020vwl joins a growing number of TDEs with well-characterised prompt radio emission, with future timely radio observations of TDEs required to fully understand the mechanism that produces this type of radio emission in TDEs., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Understanding the natal kicks received by neutron stars (NSs) during formation is a critical component of modelling the evolution of massive binaries. Natal kicks are an integral input parameter for population synthesis codes, and have implications for the formation of double NS systems and their subsequent merger rates. However, many of the standard observational kick distributions that are used are obtained from samples created only from isolated NSs. Kick distributions derived in this way overestimate the intrinsic NS kick distribution. For NSs in binaries, we can only directly estimate the effect of the natal kick on the binary system, instead of the natal kick received by the NS itself. Here, for the first time, we present a binary kick distribution for NSs with low-mass companions. We compile a catalogue of 145 NSs in low-mass binaries with the best available constraints on proper motion, distance, and systemic radial velocity. For each binary, we use a three-dimensional approach to estimate its binary kick. We discuss the implications of these kicks on system formation, and provide a parametric model for the overall binary kick distribution, for use in future theoretical modelling work. We compare our results with other work on isolated NSs and NSs in binaries, finding that the NS kick distributions fit using only isolated pulsars underestimate the fraction of NSs that receive low kicks. Abstract

The ROSAT-selected tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate RX J133157.6-324319.7 (J1331), was detected in 1993 as a bright (0.2-2 keV flux of $(1.0 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$), ultra-soft ($kT=0.11 \pm 0.03$ keV) X-ray flare from a quiescent galaxy ($z=0.05189$). During its fifth All-Sky survey (eRASS5) in 2022, SRG/eROSITA detected the repeated flaring of J1331, where it had rebrightened to an observed 0.2-2 keV flux of $(6.0 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-13}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, with spectral properties ($kT=0.115 \pm 0.007$ keV) consistent with the ROSAT-observed flare $\sim$30 years earlier. In this work, we report on X-ray, UV, optical, and radio observations of this system. During a pointed XMM observation $\sim$17 days after the eRASS5 detection, J1331 was not detected in the 0.2-2 keV band, constraining the 0.2-2 keV flux to have decayed by a factor of $\gtrsim$40 over this period. Given the extremely low probability ($\sim5\times 10^{-6}$) of observing two independent full TDEs from the same galaxy over a 30 year period, we consider the variability seen in J1331 to be likely caused by two partial TDEs involving a star on an elliptical orbit around a black hole. J1331-like flares show faster rise and decay timescales ($\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{days})$) compared to standard TDE candidates, with neglible ongoing accretion at late times post-disruption between outbursts., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

The identification and localization of Fast Radio Bursts to their host galaxies has revealed important details about the progenitors of these mysterious, millisecond-long bursts of coherent radio emission. In this work we study the most probable host galaxy of the apparently non-repeating CHIME/FRB event FRB 20190425A -- a particularly high luminosity, low dispersion measure event that was demonstrated by Moroianu et al. 2022 to be temporally and spatially coincident with the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA binary neutron star merger GW190425, suggesting an astrophysical association (p-value 0.0052). In this paper we remain agnostic to this result, and we confirm UGC10667 as the most probable host galaxy of FRB 20190425A, demonstrating that the host galaxies of low dispersion measure, one-off CHIME FRBs can be plausibly identified. We then perform multi-wavelength observations to characterize the galaxy and search for any afterglow emission associated with the FRB and its putative GW counterpart. We find no radio or optical transient emission in our observations $2.5\,\mathrm{yr}$ post-burst. UGC10667 is a spiral galaxy at $z\sim0.03$, dominated by an old stellar population. We find no evidence of a large population of young stars, with nebular emission dominated by star formation at a rate of $1-2\,\mathrm{M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}$. While we cannot rule out a young magnetar as the origin of FRB 20190425A, our observations are consistent with an origin in a long delay-time neutron star binary merger as posited by Moroianu et al. 2022., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Abstract

We observed the rapid radio brightening of GRB 210702A with the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) just 11hr post-burst, tracking early-time radio variability over a 5hr period on ~15min timescales at 9.0, 16.7, and 21.2GHz. A broken power-law fit to the 9.0GHz light curve showed that the 5hr flare peaked at a flux density of 0.4+/-0.1mJy at ~13hr post-burst with a steep rise and decline. The observed temporal and spectral evolution are not expected in the standard internal-external shock model, where forward and reverse shock radio emission evolves on much longer timescales. The early-time (<1day) optical and X-ray light curves from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory demonstrated typical afterglow forward shock behaviour, allowing us to use blast wave physics to determine a likely homogeneous circumburst medium and an emitting electron population power-law index of p=2.9+/-0.1. We suggest the early-time radio flare is likely due to weak interstellar scintillation (ISS), which boosted the radio afterglow emission above the ATCA sensitivity limit on minute timescales. Using weak ISS relations, we were able to place an upper limit on the size of the blast wave of $\leq6 \times 10^{16}$cm in the plane of the sky, which is consistent with the theoretical forward shock size prediction of $8\times10^{16}$cm for GRB 210702A at ~13h post-burst. This represents the earliest ISS size constraint on a GRB blast wave to date, demonstrating the importance of rapid (<1day) radio follow-up of GRBs using several-hour integrations to capture the early afterglow evolution, and to track scintillation over a broad frequency range., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Thermonuclear (type-I) bursts arise from unstable ignition of accumulated fuel on the surface of neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries. Measurements of burst properties in principle enable observers to infer the properties of the host neutron star and mass donors, but a number of confounding astrophysical effects contribute to systematic uncertainties. Here we describe some commonly-used approaches for determining system parameters, including composition of the burst fuel, and introduce a new suite of software tools, concord, intended to fully account for astrophysical uncertainties. Comparison of observed burst properties with the predictions of numerical models is a complementary method of constraining host properties, and the tools presented here are intended to make comprehensive model-observation comparisons straightforward. Abstract

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occur when a star passes too close to a supermassive black hole and is destroyed by tidal gravitational forces. Radio observations of TDEs trace synchrotron emission from outflowing material that may be ejected from the inner regions of the accretion flow around the SMBH or by the tidal debris stream. Radio detections of tidal disruption events are rare, but provide crucial information about the launching of jets and outflows from supermassive black holes and the circumnuclear environment in galaxies. Here we present the radio detection of the TDE AT2020opy, including three epochs of radio observations taken with the Karl G. Jansky's Very Large Array (VLA), MeerKAT, and upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio telescope. AT2020opy is the most distant thermal TDE with radio emission reported to date, and from modelling the evolving synchrotron spectra we deduce that the host galaxy has a more dense circumnuclear medium than other thermal TDEs detected in the radio band. Based on an equipartition analysis of the synchrotron spectral properties of the event, we conclude that the radio-emitting outflow was likely launched approximately at the time of, or just after, the initial optical flare. We find no evidence for relativistic motion of the outflow. The high luminosity of this event supports that a dense circumnuclear medium of the host galaxy produces brighter radio emission that rises to a peak more quickly than in galaxies with lower central densities., Comment: 8 pages, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

(Abridged) In this paper, we present the results of an exceptional repeating X-ray nuclear transient, eRASSt J045650.3-203750 (hereafter J0456-20), uncovered by SRG/eROSITA in a quiescent galaxy at redshift of z~0.077. The main results are: 1) J0456-20 cycles through four distinctive phases: an X-ray rising phase leading into an X-ray plateau phase which lasts for ~2 months. This is terminated by a rapid X-ray flux drop phase during which the X-ray flux can drastically drop by more than a factor of 100 within 1 week followed by an X-ray faint state for about two months before it starts the X-ray rising phase again; 2) the X-ray spectra are generally soft in the rising phase with a photon index >3.0, and become harder as the X-ray flux increases. There is evidence of a multi-colour disk with inner region temperature of $T_\text{in}=70$ eV at the beginning of the X-ray rising phase. The high quality XMM-Newton data suggest that a warm and hot corona could be responsible for the X-ray emission, through inverse Comptonisation of soft disk seed photons, during the plateau phase and at the bright end of the rising phase; 3) J0456-20 shows only moderate UV variability and no significant optical variability; 4) radio emission is only detected (as yet) in the X-ray plateau phase, and shows a rapid decline on a time-scale of 2 weeks. We conclude that J0456-20 is likely a repeating nuclear transient with a tentative recurrence time of ~223 days. We discuss several possibilities to explain J0456-20's observational properties, and currently favour a repeating partial tidal disruption event (TDE) as the most likely scenario. Abstract

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occur when a star is destroyed by a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy, temporarily increasing the accretion rate onto the black hole and producing a bright flare across the electromagnetic spectrum. Radio observations of TDEs trace outflows and jets that may be produced. Radio detections of the outflows from TDEs are uncommon, with only about one third of TDEs discovered to date having published radio detections. Here we present over two years of comprehensive, multi-radio frequency monitoring observations of the tidal disruption event AT2019azh taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) and MeerKAT radio telescopes from approximately 10 days pre-optical peak to 810 days post-optical peak. AT2019azh shows unusual radio emission for a thermal TDE, as it brightened very slowly over two years, and showed fluctuations in the synchrotron energy index of the optically thin synchrotron emission from 450 days post-disruption. Based on the radio properties, we deduce that the outflow in this event is likely non-relativistic and could be explained by a spherical outflow arising from self-stream intersections, or a mildly collimated outflow from accretion onto the supermassive black hole. This data-set provides a significant contribution to the observational database of outflows from TDEs, including the earliest radio detection of a non-relativistic TDE to date, relative to the optical discovery., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the increase of Latino parents' confidence in advocating and supporting their child's schooling. The intervention was implemented in six public independent school districts in the Southwest United States. The data was examined through matched pre- and post-surveys (n = 45). Findings are consistent in describing a successful program and the pre- to post-gains in preparing Latino families to aid their children in becoming academically successful.

Abstract

Hotspots on the surface of accreting neutron stars have been directly observed via pulsations in the lightcurves of X-ray pulsars. They are thought to occur due to magnetic channelling of the accreted fuel to the neutron star magnetic poles. Some X-ray pulsars exhibit burst oscillations during Type I thermonuclear X-ray bursts which are thought to be caused by asymmetries in the burning. In rapidly rotating neutron stars, it has been shown that the lower gravity at the equator can lead to preferential ignition of X-ray bursts at this location. These models, however, do not include the effect of accretion hotspots at the neutron star surface. There are two accreting neutron star sources in which burst oscillations have been observed to track exactly the neutron star spin period. We analyse whether this could be due to the X-ray bursts igniting at the magnetic pole of the neutron star, because of heating in the accreted layers under the hotspot causing ignition conditions to be reached earlier. We investigate heat transport in the accreted layers using a 2D model and study the prevalence of heating down to the ignition depth of X-ray bursts for different hotspot temperatures and sizes. We perform calculations for accretion at the pole and at the equator, and infer that ignition could occur away from the equator at the magnetic pole for hotspots with temperatures greater than $1\times10^8$ K. Abstract

We report on an optical photometric and polarimetric campaign on the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2019 outburst. The emergence of a low-frequency excess in the spectral energy distribution in the form of a red excess above the disc spectrum (seen most prominently in z, i and R-bands) is observed as the outburst evolves. This is indicative of optically thin synchrotron emission due to a jet, as seen previously in this source and in other AMXPs during outburst. At the end of the outburst decay, the source entered a reflaring state. The low-frequency excess is still observed during the reflares. Our optical (BVRI) polarimetric campaign shows variable linear polarization (LP) throughout the outburst. We show that this is intrinsic to the source, with low-level but significant detections (0.2-2%) in all bands. The LP spectrum is red during both the main outburst and the reflaring state, favoring a jet origin for this variable polarization over other interpretations, such as Thomson scattering with free electrons from the disc or the propelled matter. During the reflaring state, a few episodes with stronger LP level (1-2 %) are observed. The low-level, variable LP is suggestive of strongly tangled magnetic fields near the base of the jet. These results clearly demonstrate how polarimetry is a powerful tool for probing the magnetic field structure in X-ray binary jets, similar to AGN jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We measured the thermonuclear burning efficiency as a function of accretion rate for the Type I X-ray bursts of five low-mass X-ray binary systems. We chose sources with measured neutron star spins and a substantial population of bursts from a large observational sample. The general trend for the burst rate is qualitatively the same for all sources; the burst rate first increases with the accretion rate up to a maximum, above which the burst rate declines, despite the increasing accretion rate. At higher accretion rates, when the burst rate decreases, the {\alpha}-value (the ratio of accretion energy and burst energy) increases by up to a factor of 10 above that in the rising burst rate regime. These observations are contrary to the predictions of 1D numerical models, but can be explained as the consequence of a zone of stable burning on the neutron star surface, which expands with increasing accretion rate. The stable burning also "pollutes" the unstable burning layer with ashes, contributing to the change in burst properties measured in the falling burst rate regime. We find that the mass accretion rate at which the burst rate begins to decrease is anti-correlated with the spin of the neutron star. We conclude that the neutron star spin is a key factor, moderating the nuclear burning stability, via the local accretion rate and fuel composition over the star., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

X-ray transients, such as accreting neutron stars, periodically undergo outbursts, thought to be caused by a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk. Usually outbursts of accreting neutron stars are identified when the accretion disk has undergone an instability, and the persistent X-ray flux has risen to a threshold detectable by all sky monitors on X-ray space observatories. Here we present the earliest known combined optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations of the outburst onset of an accreting neutron star low mass X-ray binary system. We observed a significant, continuing increase in the optical i'-band magnitude starting on July 25, 12 days before the first X-ray detection with Swift/XRT and NICER (August 6), during the onset of the 2019 outburst of SAX J1808.4-3658. We also observed a 4 day optical to X-ray rise delay, and a 2 day UV to X-ray delay, at the onset of the outburst. We present the multiwavelength observations that were obtained, discussing the theory of outbursts in X-ray transients, including the disk instability model, and the implications of the delay. This work is an important confirmation of the delay in optical to X-ray emission during the onset of outbursts in low mass X-ray binaries, which has only previously been measured with less sensitive all sky monitors. Abstract

Observations of the accretion powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 have revealed an interesting binary evolution, with the orbit of the system expanding at an accelerated rate. We use the recent finding that the accreted fuel in SAX J1808.4-3658 is hydrogen depleted to greatly refine models of the progenitor and prior evolution of the binary system. We constrain the initial mass of the companion star to 1.0-1.2 M$_{\mathrm{\odot}}$, more massive than previous evolutionary studies of this system have assumed. We also infer the system must have undergone strongly non-conservative mass transfer in order to explain the observed orbital period changes. Following Jia & Li (2015), we include mass loss due to the pulsar radiation pressure on the donor star, inducing an evaporative wind which is ejected at the inner Lagrangian point of the binary system. The resulting additional loss of angular momentum resolves the discrepancy between conservative mass transfer models and the observed orbital period derivative of this system. We also include a treatment of donor irradiation due to the accretion luminosity, and find this has a non-negligible effect on the evolution of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted by MNRAS
