10. High-pressure synthesis of the cubic perovskite BaRu[O.sub.3] and evolution of ferromagnetism in ARu[O.sub.3] (A - Ca, Sr, Ba) ruthenates

Abstract

The cubic perovskite BaRu[O.sub.3] has been synthesized under 18 GPa at 1,000[degrees]C. Rietveld refinement indicates that the new compound has a stretched Ru-O bond. The cubic perovskite BaRu[O.sub.3] remains metallic to 4 K and exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at [T.sub.c] = 60 K, which is significantly lower than the [T.sub.c] [approximately equal to] 160 K for SrRu[O.sub.3]. The availability of cubic perovskite BaRu[O.sub.3] not only makes it possible to map out the evolution of magnetism in the whole series of ARu[O.sub.3] (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) as a function of the ionic size of the A-site [r.sub.A], but also completes the polytypes of BaRu[O.sub.3]. Extension of the plot of [T.sub.c] versus [r.sub.A] in perovskites ARu[O.sub.3] (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) shows that [T.sub.c] does not increase as the cubic structure is approached, but has a maximum for orthorhombic SrRu[O.sub.3]. Suppressing [T.sub.c] by Ca and Ba doping in SrRu[O.sub.3] is distinguished by sharply different magnetic susceptibilities [sub.x](T) of the paramagnetic phase. This distinction has been interpreted in the context of a Griffiths' phase on the (Ca Sr)Ru[O.sub.3] side and bandwidth broadening on the (Sr,Ba)Ru[O.sub.3] side. magnetism | compounds | Ruthenate

Abstract

High-temperature superconducting Josephson junctions were grown in a ramp-edge superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) configuration using highly stable normal-metal barrier materials such as the cation-modified and corrosion-resistant compound (pryGd(sub 0.6-y))Ca0.4Ba1.6La0.4Cu3O7. The fabricated junctions were observed to exhibit well-defined RSJ-like current and voltage characteristics at liquid-nitrogen temperature.It was also noted that the junction performance is primarily regulated by the N-layer.

Abstract

Transport measurements done at various applied magnetic fields were used in the critical-current measurements for YBa2Cu3O7-delta, Gd0.6Ca0.4Ba1.6LaO.4Cu3O7-delta and TX-GBCO/YBCO bilayer films which were prepared by pulsed laser deposition and patterned as microbridges. For TX-GBCO/YBCO bilayers, the highest Jc at 75 K in 5 Tesla was observed showing a 40% increase in Jc over YBCO under the same conditions.

Abstract

Resistivity and thermopower studies of perovskites of composition Ln(sub 1-x)A(sub x)MnO3 at high pressures reveal an unusual origin for their electronic properties. The conduction electrons condense into extended electronic states at temperatures below the Curie temperature and without energy dispersion. The strong linkages between the conduction electrons and cooperative oxygen vibrations along the Mn-O bond axes create the extended electronic states. The colossal magnetoresistance versus temperature relation gives a peak due to Curie temperature shift.

Abstract

International audience; A new post-annealing treatment at ca. 600 °C was used to modify the oxygen deficiency during the synthesis of the spinel LiMn1.45Cr0.1Ni0.45O4 cathode for Li-ion batteries. It is an effective way to eliminate the impurity phase without changing the crystal chemistry. Small amount of substituting Cr leads to better rate performance and cyclability at room temperature, compared to commercial LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4. LiMn1.45Cr0.1Ni0.45O4 delivered a reversible capacity of 104 mAh g-1 at 1C rate. After 125 cycles, about 99% of reversible capacity was retained for the LiMn1.45Cr0.1Ni0.45O4 in contrast with 6% capacity loss for the commercial LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that the LiMn1.45Cr0.1Ni0.45O4 had a smaller surface resistance, which may be due to the segregation of Ni from the surface to the bulk.

Abstract

Three (R,R′)2Mn2O7 ferromagnetic pyrochlore systems were studied to investigate the role of the R3+ ionic size versus 4f moment on the magnetic properties of the Mn2O7 sublattice. The Curie temperature TC=18±1 K for R=Y and Lu remained nearly constant for (Y1−xLux)2Mn2O7 but the magnetization data show characteristics of spin-glass behavior in low magnetic fields, and at 5 T, the magnetization fails to reach the expected 3 μB/Mn4+ found by 0.5 T in Tl2Mn2O7 and In2Mn2O7. A frustrated, minor antiferromagnetic component apparently competes with the ferromagnetic component of the Mn4+-O-Mn4+ interactions to give a minor antiferromagnetic component to the major ferromagnetic spin alignment of the Mn4+ ions. A TC=42±1 K for R=Dy and Yb remains nearly constant in the (Dy1−yYby)2Mn2O7 system and TC increases systematically from 19 to 42 K with Dy concentration in (Dy1−zLuz)2Mn2O7, which clearly shows that a ferromagnetic interaction between the R3+-ion and Mn4+-ion spins favors ferromagnetic alignment of the Mn4+-ion spins to double the magnitude of TC by relieving the frustration of the Mn2O7 sublattice. The R3+-ion size has little effect as the Mn-O-Mn bond angle changes by no more than ∼1° with changing ionic radius of the R3+ ion.

Abstract

International audience; Comparison is made between the use of either a carbon powder or a polymer additive to the precursors in the synthesis of LiFePO4 from the Fe(III) compound FePO4(H2O)2 and Li2CO3. The evolution of the structural properties and phase purity with temperature and time have been monitored at all length scales by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. The reactor temperature was decreased to 300 °C to investigate the early stages of the reaction. Formation of crystalline LiFePO4 begins in the range 300-400 °C only if the polymer is used as the carbonaceous additive. This LiFePO4 formation is made possible by the reduction of Fe(III) species by gases such as H2 or gaseous hydrocarbons evolved during the calcination of the polymer. Moreover, decomposition of the polymer results in a carbonaceous deposit on the surface of the LiFePO4 particles. An Li3Fe2(PO4)3 impurity found after sintering at 400 °C for 4 h was greatly reduced after sintering at 400 °C for 24 h, and phase- pure LiFePO4 was attained at 700 °C. Where the solid carbon powder was used as the reducing agent, no Fe(II) species could be detected after sintering at 400 °C. Carbothermal reduction of Fe(III) is ruled out in this temperature range.

Abstract

Reduced binary metal oxides of chromium, iron, tungsten and molybdenum were obtained by the addition of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in aqueous solutions of ammonium salts at a fixed pH and maintained by adding hydrochloric acid drops. This method was found to have the potential to lead to the formation of ternary oxides in the presence of other cations. The technique may be applicable to the synthesis of metastable or low temperature phases with interesting physical and structural properties.
