7. The Battle of Bentonville: Caring for Casualties of the Civil War. Teaching with Historic Places.

Abstract

At the First Battle of Manassas (Virginia) in 1861 many Union doctors fled the battlefield in fear. Those who remained found themselves without adequate medical supplies or ambulances for their patients. As the U.S. Civil War progressed and casualties mounted, military surgeons became more adept at caring for the wounded. By the Battle of Bentonville (North Carolina), one of the last major engagements of the Civil War, the U.S. Army medical department had developed an effective system for operating field hospitals and an ambulance corps. The improved organization was typical of the advances in logistics that aided the Union's war effort. This lesson is based on the Bentonville Battle Ground State Historic Site. It describes and discusses the state of medicine and medical services at the Bentonville battlefield. The lesson plan can be used in units on the Civil War. 16. THE STATUS OF PHYSICS TEACHING IN NORTH CAROLINA.

Abstract

AN ANALYSIS OF THE STATUS OF HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS AND THE QUALIFICATIONS OF INSERVICE AND NEW PHYSICS TEACHERS IN NORTH CAROLINA IS PRESENTED. ALL SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE STATE WERE INCLUDED IN THE SURVEY. A RANDOM SAMPLE OF 88 TEACHERS WAS SELECTED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE QUALIFICATIONS OF PHYSICS TEACHERS. DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM THE BIENNIAL REPORTS OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, TEACHER TRANSCRIPTS, AND TEACHER CERTIFICATION RECORDS. GRAPHS, TABLES, AND PERCENTAGES WERE USED TO INTERPRET FINDINGS. THE NUMBER OF SCHOOLS OFFERING PHYSICS AND THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN PHYSICS HAS SLOWLY INCREASED. MOST SCHOOLS WERE TEACHING ONE CLASS OF PHYSICS. THE MAJORITY OF THE TEACHERS WERE NOT ADEQUATELY PREPARED. FEW TEACHERS WERE BEING PREPARED OR CERTIFIED FOR SPECIALIZATION IN PHYSICS. 33. The Development of an Instrument to Evaluate Certain Practices in Science Supervision.

Abstract

The functions of the science supervisor were studied and an instrument to evaluate science supervisor practices was developed. Supervisory functions were categorized into six areas. Case studies concerning problems in each area were written. Five solutions to each problem were developed. A jury of science educators and science supervisors was selected to respond to the case studies. The paired comparison technique was used to analyze the data. The responses of the science educators and the supervisors were compared and of the ten case studies in the instrument, seven yielded statistically significant data. The jury consistently indicated that dogmatic dictatorial methods were the least attractive of the alternatives. They believed supervisors functioned best using indirect methods. These conclusions agree with what appears in the professional literature. The instrument is recommended by the investigator for use as resource information, for evaluating supervisory services, for evaluating applicants for supervisory positions, and for a basis of research in science supervision. Abstract

Title insurers will benefit from proposed changes in the Uniform Partnership Act covering real property and titles. The entity definition of partnership is supported, allowing partnerships to own property directly instead of through their members. Clarifications for the authority to transfer property of the partnership are also provided. Dissociation of members is covered, allowing the converted partnership to retain its previous identity. This revision to the act awaits approval by the ABA and state governments.

Abstract

The Multifamily Mortgage Foreclosure Act, which empowers the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to foreclose on its mortgages regardless of state laws, raises questions regarding retroactivity and due process. HUD applies the law retroactively to mortgages made prior to the law's enactment on Oct 1, 1981, which may not have been Congress' intention. Whether the law provides sufficient due process under its notice and procedural provisions to be constitutional is the more serious question.
