International audience; As described in the literature, the demand characteristics could influence the food distribution configuration. The aim of this paper is to explain how these demand characteristics can be used to describe the logistic requirements for food distribution configuration. With this aim, the chosen methodological approach integrates a literature review, interviews of stakeholders involved in the distribution system and a survey to the French industrial sector. Results describe the logistic requirements from for food distribution found in the literature review according to the different actors, products and distribution configuration adopted. Furthermore, the logistic requirements extracted from the literature review are compared with the primary data collected to establish the main logistic requirements linked to the conscious demand in the food supply chain for the food distribution configuration. The main logistic requirements defined are linked to facility location, supplier selection and distribution optimization due to the logistic platforms and transportation strategies development. Finally, the results of this research provide information to food supply chain actors when designing the food distribution circuits aiming to answer to conscious demand characteristics that are emerging.

International audience; This paper proposes the use of the searching time to measure the accessibility of Freight Loading Zone (FLZ). Cruising for parking is the time for a delivery truck to visit a sequence of FLZ until the first vacant one is found. To our best knowledge, the capture of the truck searching time has not been studied for the line of research that we address in this paper. The methodology includes a parking choice model and an availability model. The impact of FLZ demand and supply on the searching time are quantified. The use of microscopic traffic models makes it possible to include traffic lights and particular vehicles demand into the simulations. Results show the mean searching time scale, related to the FLZ density and the occupancy rate. Moreover, a cost function is used to access the additional cost of the last mile by considering the searching time.

International audience; This paper proposes a framework for quantifying the macroscopic impacts of delivery goods made by double-parked vehicles in urban arterial using microscopic simulation. It is applied to a real urban corridor: The Lafayette Avenue in Lyon (France). The framework combines traffic states with stochastic and microscopic freight demand generation model, i.e. the delivery movements and the delivery duration. Cooperative and competitive scenarios are considered. Impacts of goods delivery have been captured in a traffic evaluation model. The results of these configurations' assessment are discussed. Finally, practical implications for transport planners are highlighted.

T his paper presents the main issues related to the financing of urban logistics solutions , m ore precise ly to the contribution of economic analysis on strategic decision support related for urban logistics financing , focusing on cost benefit analysis. First we present the main funding strategies in urban economics, mainly in the field of urban logistics . Second we address the contribution of cost benefit analysis by recalling the main methodology and adapting it to urban logistics. Third we apply the method to the example of deploying a delivery spac e booking network, and illustrate the application via a set of three examples containing different situations and scenarios, which are presented , assessed and discussed . From the different simulations, it is observed that the way the system is financed has strong impacts on both its individual cost (for potential users) and its attractiveness.

International audience; Urban logistics research set off in Europe some fifteen years ago, supported by the funding efforts of the European Commission. The special morphology of European cities, with narrow streets and historical centres which had to be preserved in many cases as world heritage sites, contributed to this interest. However, the problems of urban deliveries also had to be faced in other lively and congested cities around the globe, from Japan to America or Australia. Therefore, several researchers and practitioners have developed in the last years a wide variety of methods to support the different decisions of stakeholders involved in urban logistics. This paper motivates and introduces the Special Issue of European Transport/Trasporti Europei on decision support for urban logistics. The ten proposed papers are classified and presented.

In freight distribution services a required quality level may have a relevant effect on transportation costs. For this reason an evaluation tool is useful to compare different service settings and support the decision, on the base of quantitative indicators. This paper proposes a method for cost evaluation in this context and presents an application to a case study concerning a freight distribution service, which operates on a wide road network having a city centre, a peripheral urban area and a peri-urban rural zone. A simulation method is proposed to obtain real-life scenarios in order to test the method and its indicators. The performance of each indicator has been evaluated in an experimental context to produce realistic test cases, using a trip planning tool and a demand generator. First, the behaviour of the indicators is analysed with regard to the time windows width planned for the service. Then, their ability in estimating the total transportation cost to satisfy all the requests, under different time period profiles, is shown. The results confirm the ability of the set of indicators to predict with a good approximation the transportation costs and therefore to be used in supporting the service quality planning decisions., European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research, Vol 12 No 3 (2012)

International audience; This paper studies the implication of aggregating establishments by categories with different levels of detail for modeling urban freight trip generation. To this effect, the authors use a dataset of 2.970 establishments collected in 1998-1999 in France to conduct a formal assessment of FTG patterns homogeneity inside the traditional activity-based grouping (retail, manufacturing, wholesale, etc.). The results shows that, although, for some categories the traditional high-level aggregation includes sub-sectors with homogenous FTG patterns and thus produces appropriate models; in some other cases (e.g., retail, manufacturing), the sub-sectors have different FTG patterns and thus more detailed data is needed to calibrate accurate models. This research can be used to enhance the efficiency of data collection, as it identifies some sub-sectors that need larger efforts for data collection, and some other categories where FTG homogeneity allows for less detailed data collection without hampering the quality of the models.
