Purpose: A substantial literature exists, documenting differences in access to quality health care among individuals of different racial/ethnic, residence, income, and disability groups. However, little attention has been given to disparate utilization among those who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences between individuals with and without hearing-related issues using a nationally representative survey of health care access outcomes to quantify the magnitude of these differences. Method: Using data from the 2021 Centers for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, we compared health care utilization between individuals who reported being DHH and those without hearing-related issues. Logistic regression models were used to explore differences in access to care between DHH and non-DHH individuals controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: The total Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey sample consisted of 412,427 respondents. Among those were 36,532 (6.85%) who identified as DHH. Logistic models indicated that DHH adults were less likely to have a personal health care provider (odds ratio [OR] = 0.91, 95% CI [0.83-- 2.03]) and less likely to have received a routine checkup within the last 2 years (OR = 0.91, 95% CI [0.82--1.02]) but more likely to have forgone health care due to difficulty paying (OR = 1.90, 95% CI [1.71--2.06]) compared to those without hearing difficulties. Differences were robust to race, sex, and other demographic factors. Conclusions: Significant differences in health care utilization were observed between DHH and non-DHH individuals. This is concerning given that DHH adults have a higher prevalence of many chronic conditions that require clinical management. These results indicate that health care providers and systems must offer greater communication options to facilitate better health-related outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study published in the International Journal of Dermatology found that obesity is associated with higher nail psoriasis disease activity and prevalence in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The study compared 41 obese PsA patients with 41 non-obese PsA patients and found that obese patients had a higher prevalence of nail psoriasis and increased disease activity. The study also found a moderate correlation between body mass index (BMI) and nail psoriasis severity. The findings suggest that managing obesity could help lower the burden of nail disease and cardiovascular risk in patients with psoriatic disease. [Extracted from the article]

BACKGROUND Hypertension affects 33% of Americans while type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease (AD) affect 10% of Americans, respectively. Ryanodine receptor 3 gene (RYR3) codes for the RYR which functions to release stored endoplasmic reticulum calcium ions (Ca2+) to increase intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Increasing studies demonstrate that altered levels of intracellular Ca2+ affect cardiac contraction, insulin secretion, and neurodegeneration. In this study, we investigated associations of the RYR3 genetic variants with hypertension, AD, and diabetes. METHODS Family data sets were used to explore association of RYR3 polymorphisms with risk and age at onset (AAO) of hypertension, diabetes, and AD. RESULTS Family-based association tests using generalized estimating equations (FBAT--GEE) showed several unique or shared disease-1 associated variants in the RYR3 gene. Three single nuclear polymorphisms (SNPs; rs2033610, rs2596164, and rs2278317) are significantly associated with risk for hypertension, diabetes, and AD. Two SNPs (rs4780174 and rs7498093) are significantly associated with AAO of the 3 diseases. CONCLUSIONS RYR3 variants are associated with hypertension, diabetes, and AD. Replication of these results of this gene in these 3 complex traits may help to better understand the genetic basis of calcium-signaling gene, RYR3 in association with risk and AAO of these diseases. Objective: Report the prevalence and severity of the most common allergic diseases in children living in Monterrey, México., Methods: Cross-sectional multi-center survey on the most common allergic diseases, completed by parents of 6-7-year-old children and by 13-14- year-old adolescents in the Monterrey metropolitan area, between January 2018 and December 2019., Results: A total of 3,044 questionnaires were eligible for the analysis. Among children between 6-7 years old, 30.2% (n = 143/473) presented wheezing at any time in their life; with a higher prevalence in the male population. In the adolescent group, 26.4% reported having experienced wheezing at some point in their life, with a slight predominance in the female group (54.9%)., Conclusions: Knowing the prevalence of allergic diseases in our population gives us tools to generate strategies that allow us to provide the best quality healthcare to our patients., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
