We develop an explicit, second-order, variational time integrator for full body dynamics that preserves the momenta of the continuous dynamics, such as linear and angular momenta, and exhibits near-conservation of total energy over exponentially long times. In order to achieve these properties, we parametrize the space of rotations using exponential local coordinates represented by a rescaled form of the Rodrigues rotation vector and we systematically derive the time integrator from a discrete Lagrangian function that yields discrete Euler-Lagrange equations amenable to explicit, closed-form solutions. By restricting attention to spherical bodies and Lagrangian functions with a quadratic kinetic energy and potential energies that solely depend on positions and attitudes, we show that the discrete Lagrangian map exhibits the same mathematical structure, up to terms of second order, of explicit Newmark or velocity Verlet algorithms, both known to be variational time integrators. These preserving properties, together with linear convergence of trajectories and quadratic convergence of total energy, are born out by two examples, namely the dynamics on $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ of a three-dimensional pendulum, and the nonlinear dynamics on $\mathrm{SE}(3)^n$ that results from the impact of a particle-binder torus against a rigid wall.

A semi-empirical mechanistic contact law for micro-crystalline cellulose (Avicel PH-200) particles is proposed and characterized experimentally using force-displacement curves obtained from diametrical compression of single particles. The concepts of a shape factor and a master contact law are introduced first for elastic ellipsoidal particles, and subsequently generalized to plastic irregular particles. The proposed loading-unloading contact law is a function of three characteristic diameters (lengths of the principal axes of an approximated ellipsoid), a geometric parameter associated with the loading condition, three plastic and one elastic material properties. The force-displacement curves obtained using a micro-compression tester exhibit an apparent strain-hardening at distinctly different strain values, which is captured by the shape factor function and its geometric parameter. The three plastic material properties are log-normal distributions estimated from the loading experimental curves, while the elastic property is estimated from the unloading experimental curves. The study shows a very good agreement between predictions of the calibrated loading-unloading contact law and the experimental values.

A two-dimensional, transient, multi-scale modeling approach is presented for predicting the magnitude and rate of percolation segregation for binary mixtures of granular material in a rotating drum and conical hopper. The model utilizes finite element method simulations to determine the bulk-level granular velocity field, which is then combined with particle-level diffusion and segregation correlations using the advection-diffusion-segregation equation. The utility of this modelling approach is demonstrated by predicting segregation patterns in a rotating drum and during the discharge of conical hoppers with different geometries. The model exhibits good quantitative accuracy in predicting DEM and experimental segregation data reported in the literature for cohesionless granular materials. Moreover, since the numerical approach does not directly model individual particles, it is expected to scale well to systems of industrial scale.

We present contact radius and curvature corrections to the nonlocal contact formulation that take into account multi-particle interactions in elastic confined granular systems. The nonlocal contact formulation removes the classical assumption of independent contacts by taking into account the interplay of deformations due to multiple contact forces acting on a single particle. The contact radius correction considers the components of these deformations that contribute to the inter-particle contact area. The curvature correction improves the description of the contacting surface profiles by including higher order terms in their Taylor series expansions. To validate the corrected formulation, we restrict attention to rubber spheres under different loading conditions, in the absence of gravitational forces, adhesion or friction. Specifically, we show that the predictions of contact force and radius are in remarkable agreement with finite-element simulations and experimental observations up to levels of deformation at which contact impingement occurs, which was not possible with the original elastic nonlocal contact formulation. Convergence of the curvature corrected formulation is observed at a four-term correction.

We present generalized loading-unloading contact laws for elasto-plastic spheres with bonding strength. The proposed mechanistic contact laws are continuous at the onset of unloading by means of a regularization term, in the spirit of a cohesive zone model, that introduces a small and controllable error in the conditions for interparticle breakage. This continuity property is in sharp contrast with the behavior of standard mechanistic loading and unloading contact theories, which exhibit a discontinuity at the onset of unloading when particles form solid bridges during plastic deformation. The formulation depends on five material properties, namely two elastic properties (Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio), two plastic properties (a plastic stiffness and a power-law hardening exponent) and one fracture mechanics property (fracture toughness), and its predictions are in agreement with detailed finite-element simulations. The numerical robustness and efficiency of the proposed formulation are borne out by performing three-dimensional particle mechanics static calculations of microstructure evolution during the three most important steps of powder die-compaction, namely during compaction, unloading, and ejection. These simulations reveal the evolution, up to relative densities close to one, of microstructural features, process variables and compact mechanical attributes which are quantitatively similar to those experimentally observed and in remarkable agreement with the (semi-)empirical formulae reported in the literature., Comment: 36 pages, 21 figures

A systematic and mechanistic connection between granular materials' macroscopic and grain level behaviors is developed for monodisperse systems of spherical elastic particles under die compaction. The Granular Micromechanics Approach (GMA) with static assumption is used to derive the stiffness tensor of transversely isotropic materials, from the average behavior of particle-particle interactions in all different directions at the microscale. Two particle-scale directional density distribution functions, namely the directional distribution of a combined mechano-geometrical property and the directional distribution of a purely geometrical property, are proposed and parametrized by five independent parameters. Five independent components of the symmetrized tangent stiffness tensor are also determined from discrete particle mechanics (PMA) calculations of nine perturbations around points of the loading path. Finally, optimal values for these five GMA parameters were obtained by minimizing the error between PMA calculations and GMA closed-form predictions of stiffness tensor during the compaction process. The results show that GMA with static assumption is effective at capturing the anisotropic evolution of microstructure during loading, even without describing contacts independently but rather accounting for them in an average sense., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

An extensive numerical campaign of particle mechanics calculations that predict microstructure formation and evolution during die compaction, up to relative densities close to one, of monodisperse plastic spheres that exhibit power-law plastic hardening behavior is presented. The study is focused on elucidating the relationship between particle plastic properties, loading conditions, and statistical features of the resulting microstructure. We adopt a Quality by Design (QbD) paradigm to better control the mechanical properties of tablets. To this end, the effect of particle size distribution, lubricant concentration, and mixing time on the tensile strength and elastic modulus of tablets is studied. Two grades of lactose, monohydrate and spray-dried, are selected. Tablets are compressed to different relative densities ranging from $0.8$ to $0.94$ using an instrumented compaction simulator. We propose a general model, which predicts the elastic modulus and tensile strength envelope that a specific powder can obtain based on its lubrication sensitivity for different particle size distributions. This is possible by introducing a new dimensionless parameter in the existing tensile strength and elastic modulus relationships with relative density. A wide range of lubrication conditions is explored and a predictable model is callibrated. The mechanical properties of lactose monohydrate tablets are noticeably dependent on particle size, unlike spray-dried lactose where little to almost no sensitivity to particle size is observed. The model is designed in a general fashion that can capture mechanical quality attributes in response to different lubrication conditions and particle size, and it can be extended to powders than undergo different deformation mechanisms, complex mixtures, and doubly convex tablets. Therefore, the model can be used to map the achievable design space of any given formulation.

A multi-scale model is presented for predicting the magnitude and rate of powder blending in a rotating drum blender. The model combines particle diffusion coefficient correlations from the literature with advective flow field information from blender finite element method simulations. The multi-scale model predictions for overall mixing and local concentration variance closely match results from discrete element method (DEM) simulations for a rotating drum, but take only hours to compute as opposed to taking days of computation time for the DEM simulations. Parametric studies were performed using the multi-scale model to investigate the influence of various parameters on mixing behavior. The multi-scale model is expected to be more amenable to predicting mixing in complex geometries and scale more efficiently to industrial-scale blenders than DEM simulations or analytical solutions.

The prohibitive cost of performing Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) tasks with a very large number of input parameters can be addressed, if the response exhibits some special structure that can be discovered and exploited. Several physical responses exhibit a special structure known as an active subspace (AS), a linear manifold of the stochastic space characterized by maximal response variation. The idea is that one should first identify this low dimensional manifold, project the high-dimensional input onto it, and then link the projection to the output. In this work, we develop a probabilistic version of AS which is gradient-free and robust to observational noise. Our approach relies on a novel Gaussian process regression with built-in dimensionality reduction with the AS represented as an orthogonal projection matrix that serves as yet another covariance function hyper-parameter to be estimated from the data. To train the model, we design a two-step maximum likelihood optimization procedure that ensures the orthogonality of the projection matrix by exploiting recent results on the Stiefel manifold. The additional benefit of our probabilistic formulation is that it allows us to select the dimensionality of the AS via the Bayesian information criterion. We validate our approach by showing that it can discover the right AS in synthetic examples without gradient information using both noiseless and noisy observations. We demonstrate that our method is able to discover the same AS as the classical approach in a challenging one-hundred-dimensional problem involving an elliptic stochastic partial differential equation with random conductivity. Finally, we use our approach to study the effect of geometric and material uncertainties in the propagation of solitary waves in a one-dimensional granular system., Comment: 37 pages, 20 figures

We report three-dimensional particle mechanics static calculations that predict the microstructure evolution during die-compaction of elastic spherical particles up to relative densities close to one. We employ a nonlocal contact formulation that remains predictive at high levels of confinement by removing the classical assumption that contacts between particles are formulated locally as independent pair-interactions. The approach demonstrates that the coordination number depends on the level of compressibility, i.e., on the Poisson's ratio, of the particles. Results also reveal that distributions of contact forces between particles and between particles and walls, although similar at jamming onset, are very different at full compaction. Particle-wall forces are in remarkable agreement with experimental measurements reported in the literature, providing a unifying framework for bridging experimental boundary observations with bulk behavior.

We propose a general framework for determining optimal relationships for tensile strength of doubly convex tablets under diametrical compression. This approach is based on the observation that tensile strength is directly proportional to the breaking force and inversely proportional to a non-linear function of geometric parameters and materials properties. This generalization reduces to the analytical expression commonly used for flat faced tablets, i.e., Hertz solution, and to the empirical relationship currently used in the pharmaceutical industry for convex-faced tablets, i.e., Pitt's equation. Under proper parametrization, optimal tensile strength relationship can be determined from experimental results by minimizing a figure of merit of choice. This optimization is performed under the first-order approximation that a flat faced tablet and a doubly curved tablet have the same tensile strength if they have the same relative density and are made of the same powder, under equivalent manufacturing conditions. Furthermore, we provide a set of recommendations and best practices for assessing the performance of optimal tensile strength relationships in general. Based on these guidelines, we identify two new models, namely the general and mechanistic models, which are effective and predictive alternatives to the tensile strength relationship currently used in the pharmaceutical industry.

We present a mesoscopic approach to granular crystal dynamics, which comprises a three-dimensional finite-element model and a one-dimensional regularized contact model. The approach investigates the role of vibrational-energy trapping effects in the dynamic behavior of one-dimensional chains of particles in contact (i.e., granular crystals), under small to moderate impact velocities. The only inputs of the models are the geometry and the elastic material properties of the individual particles that form the system. We present detailed verification results and validate the model comparing its predictions with experimental data. This approach provides a physically sound, first-principle description of dissipative losses in granular systems.

We present a nonlocal formulation of contact mechanics that accounts for the interplay of deformations due to multiple contact forces acting on a single particle. The analytical formulation considers the effects of nonlocal mesoscopic deformations characteristic of confined granular systems and, therefore, removes the classical restriction of independent contacts. This is in sharp contrast to traditional contact mechanics theories, which are strictly local and assume that contacts are independent regardless the confinement of the particles. For definiteness, we restrict attention to elastic spheres in the absence of gravitational forces, adhesion or friction. Hence, a notable feature of the nonlocal formulation is that, when nonlocal effects are neglected, it reduces to Hertz theory. Furthermore, we show that, under the preceding assumptions and up to moderate macroscopic deformations, the predictions of the nonlocal contact formulation are in remarkable agreement with detailed finite-element simulations and experimental observations, and in large disagreement with Hertz theory predictions---supporting that the assumption of independent contacts only holds for small deformations.
