Abstract

The flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays reaching the Earth is affected by the interactions with the cosmic radiation backgrounds as well as with the magnetic fields that are present along their trajectories. We combine the SimProp cosmic ray propagation code with a routine that allows to account for the average effects of a turbulent magnetic field on the direction of propagation of the particles. We compute in this way the modification of the spectrum which is due to the magnetic horizon effect, both for primary nuclei as well as for the secondary nuclei resulting from the photo-disintegration of the primary ones. We also provide analytic parameterizations of the attenuation effects, as a function of the magnetic field parameters and of the density of cosmic ray sources, which make it possible to obtain the expected spectra in the presence of the magnetic fields from the spectra that would be obtained in the absence of magnetic fields. The discrete nature of the distribution of sources with finite density also affects the spectrum of cosmic rays at the highest energies where the flux is suppressed due to the interactions with the radiation backgrounds, and parameterizations of these effects are obtained., Comment: Matches published version

Abstract

Abiotic stress factors can be detected using visible and near-infrared spectral signatures. Previous work demonstrated the potential of this technology in crop monitoring, although a large majority used vegetation indices, which did not consider the complete spectral information. This work explored the capabilities of spectral information for abiotic stress detection using supervised machine learning techniques such as support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and neural network (NN). This study used avocados grown under various water treatments, maize submitted to nitrogen deficiency, and common beans under phosphorous restriction. The spectral characterization of the crops subjected to abiotic stress was studied on the visible to near-infrared (450 to 900 nm) spectrum, identifying discriminative bands and spectral ranges. Then, the advantages of using an integrated approach based on machine learning to detect abiotic stress in crops were demonstrated. Instead of relying on vegetation indices, the proposed approach used several spectral features obtained by analyzing the discriminative signature shape, applying a spectral subset band selection algorithm based on similarity, and using the minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR), F-test and chi-square test ranks for feature selection. The results showed that supervised classifiers applied to the spectral features outperform the accuracies obtained from vegetation indices. The best common bean results were obtained using SVM with accuracies up to 91%; for maize and avocado, NN obtained 90% and 82%, respectively. Abstract

Alzheimer's disease is a sickness that has been studied from various areas of knowledge (biomarkers, brain structure, behavior, cognitive impairment). Our aim was to develop and to apply a protocol of programmed physical activity according to a non-linear methodology to enhance or diminish the deterioration of cognitive and motor functions of adults with this disease, using concepts of complexity theory for planning and programing the program. We evaluated 18 patients (12 women and 6 men) diagnosed with mild and moderate grade. We worked in small groups (2 people/coach), a total of 16 weeks, 5 sessions per week and 60 minutes per session. We designed a protocol that integrated work balance, joint mobility, coordination, muscular strength and metabolic efficiency. The strong point of this intervention was how to design the planning of tasks for patients. The tasks were developed in parallel to processes of evocation and cognitive association individually designed and presented in order of complexity. In all subjects studied, we found an improvement in the results obtained in the Mini-Mental State Examination screening test, test of Cricthon, Set-Test of Isaacs, Clock Drawing Test and Trail Making Test, and the evaluation test of fitness. Abstract

Scoring in a basketball game is a process highly dynamic and non-linear type. The level of NBA teams improve each season. They incorporate to their rosters the best players in the world. These and other mechanisms, make the scoring in the NBA basketball games be something exciting, where, on rare occasions, we really know what will be the result at the end of the game. We analyzed all the games of the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 NBA regular seasons (6150 games). We have studied the evolution of the scoring and the time intervals between points. These do not behave uniformly, but present more predictable areas. In turn, we have analyzed the scoring in the games regarding the differences in points. Exists different areas of behavior related with the scorea and each zone has a different nature. There are point that we can consider as tipping points. Abstract

Interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors in traction applications often employ discrete rotor skewing constructions to reduce torsional excitations and back-EMF harmonics. Although skewing is very effective in reducing cogging torque, the impact on torque ripple is not well understood and can vary significantly over the operating envelope of a motor. Skewing also leads to the creation of a non-zero axial force that may compromise the bearing life if not considered. This paper introduces a holistic methodology for analyzing the effect of skewing, aiming to minimize torsional excitations, axial forces and back-EMF harmonics whilst mitigating the impact on performance and costs. Firstly, analytical models are employed for calculating cogging torque, torque ripple and axial forces. Then, 2D and 3D finite element analysis are used to incorporate the influence of non-linear material behavior. A detailed structural model of the powertrain is employed to calculate the radiated noise and identify key areas allowing a motor designer to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). A meticulous selection process for the skewing angle, the number of skew stacks and the orientation of skew stacks is developed, giving particular attention to the effect of the selected pattern on NVH in both forward and reverse rotating directions. Abstract

En 2007, la Comunidad Autónoma de Andalucía creó un nuevo instrumento de prevención y control ambiental integrados: la Autorización Ambiental Unificada. Cuando ha transcurrido ya más de una década de su implantación y se ha consolidado su uso, este articulo analiza en detalle el régimen jurídico de este instrumento: su objeto y razón de ser, las actuaciones que están sometidas al mismo, el procedimiento para obtener la autorización, los criterios que utiliza la Administración autonómica para su otorgamiento y los controles administrativos que implica para la puesta en marcha y el funcionamiento de las actuaciones. El artículo dedica una atención especial a comparar la Autorización Ambiental Unificada con otro instrumento de perfil similar como es la Autorización Ambiental Integrada. También se examina con especial detalle cómo se compagina este instrumento con la aplicación de la Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental en el territorio andaluz y los problemas que ello plantea.
