1. Exploring Federated Learning Dynamics for Black-and-White-Box DNN Traitor Tracing

Abstract

As deep learning applications become more prevalent, the need for extensive training examples raises concerns for sensitive, personal, or proprietary data. To overcome this, Federated Learning (FL) enables collaborative model training across distributed data-owners, but it introduces challenges in safeguarding model ownership and identifying the origin in case of a leak. Building upon prior work, this paper explores the adaptation of black-and-white traitor tracing watermarking to FL classifiers, addressing the threat of collusion attacks from different data-owners. This study reveals that leak-resistant white-box fingerprints can be directly implemented without a significant impact from FL dynamics, while the black-box fingerprints are drastically affected, losing their traitor tracing capabilities. To mitigate this effect, we propose increasing the number of black-box salient neurons through dropout regularization. Though there are still some open problems to be explored, such as analyzing non-i.i.d. datasets and over-parameterized models, results show that collusion-resistant traitor tracing, identifying all data-owners involved in a suspected leak, is feasible in an FL framework, even in early stages of training., Comment: This work has been submitted to the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Federated Learning Technologies and Applications (FLTA 2024) for possible publication. 2. A Cross-Sectional Review of HIV Screening in High-Acuity Emergency Department Patients: A Missed Opportunity

Abstract

Introduction: Emergency department (ED) patients requiring immediate treatment often bypass a triage process that includes HIV screening. In this study we aimed to investigate the potential missed opportunity to screen these patients for HIV.Methods: We conducted this cross-sectional study in a municipal ED over a six-week period between June–August 2019. The patient population in this study arrived in the ED as a pre-notification from prehospital services or designated by the ambulance or walk-in triage nurse as requiring immediate medical attention. Medical student researchers collected demographic data and categorized patients into three clinical groups (trauma, medical, psychiatric). They documented the patient’s eligibility for HIV screening as determined by a physician and confirmed that the patient met criteria of clear mental status, controlled pain, stable vital signs, and ability to contribute to a medical history and physical examination. The student researchers did this at initial presentation and then again during the patient’s ED stay of up to eight hours. The study outcomes measured the percentage of total patients within each clinical group (trauma, medical, psychiatric) able to engage in the HIV screening process upon arrival and during an eight-hour ED stay.Results: On average, 700 patients per month are announced on arrival via overhead page, indicating that they require immediate medical attention. During the six-week study, 205 patients (approximately 20% of total) were enrolled: 114 trauma; 56 medical; and 35 psychiatric presentations. The average patient age was 53; 60% of patients were male. Niney-eight (48%) patients were eligible for HIV screening within an eight-hour ED stay; 63 (31%) were able to be screened upon initial presentation and 35 (17%) in the first eight hours of their ED visit. Within medical and trauma subgroups, there was no significant difference in the proportion (36%) of patients that could be screened upon presentation. Among the psychiatric presentations, only five (14%) were able to be screened during their hospital stay.Conclusion: Triage protocols for high-acuity medico-surgical patients resulted in a missed opportunity to screen 48% of patients for HIV. Acute psychiatric patients represented a particular missed opportunity. We advocate for universal HIV screening, facilitated through electronic best practice advisories and a modified triage tailored to higher acuity patients. Implementing these changes would ensure that HIV screening is not overlooked in high-acuity ED patients, leading to early detection and timely interventions.

Abstract

Traditionally, natural language processing (NLP) models often use a rich set of features created by linguistic expertise, such as semantic representations. However, in the era of large language models (LLMs), more and more tasks are turned into generic, end-to-end sequence generation problems. In this paper, we investigate the question: what is the role of semantic representations in the era of LLMs? Specifically, we investigate the effect of Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) across five diverse NLP tasks. We propose an AMR-driven chain-of-thought prompting method, which we call AMRCoT, and find that it generally hurts performance more than it helps. To investigate what AMR may have to offer on these tasks, we conduct a series of analysis experiments. We find that it is difficult to predict which input examples AMR may help or hurt on, but errors tend to arise with multi-word expressions, named entities, and in the final inference step where the LLM must connect its reasoning over the AMR to its prediction. 4. On the Causal Nature of Sentiment Analysis

Abstract

Sentiment analysis (SA) aims to identify the sentiment expressed in a text, such as a product review. Given a review and the sentiment associated with it, this paper formulates SA as a combination of two tasks: (1) a causal discovery task that distinguishes whether a review "primes" the sentiment (Causal Hypothesis C1), or the sentiment "primes" the review (Causal Hypothesis C2); and (2) the traditional prediction task to model the sentiment using the review as input. Using the peak-end rule in psychology, we classify a sample as C1 if its overall sentiment score approximates an average of all the sentence-level sentiments in the review, and C2 if the overall sentiment score approximates an average of the peak and end sentiments. For the prediction task, we use the discovered causal mechanisms behind the samples to improve the performance of LLMs by proposing causal prompts that give the models an inductive bias of the underlying causal graph, leading to substantial improvements by up to 32.13 F1 points on zero-shot five-class SA. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between the Sarnat exam (SE) performed before and after therapeutic hypothermia (TH) and outcomes at 2 years in infants with moderate or severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the High-dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and EncephaLopathy Trial. Adjusted ORs (aORs) for death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) based on SE severity category and change in category were constructed, adjusting for sedation at time of exam. Absolute SE Score and its change were compared for association with risk for death or NDI using locally estimated scatterplot smoothing curves. SETTING: Randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled multicentre trial including 17 centres across the USA. PATIENTS: 479/500 enrolled neonates who had both a qualifying SE (qSE) before TH and a SE after rewarming (rSE). INTERVENTIONS: Standardised SE was used across sites before and after TH. All providers underwent standardised SE training. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome was defined as the composite outcome of death or any NDI at 22-36 months. RESULTS: Both qSE and rSE were associated with the primary outcome. Notably, an aOR for primary outcome of 6.2 (95% CI 3.1 to 12.6) and 50.3 (95% CI 13.3 to 190) was seen in those with moderate and severe encephalopathy on rSE, respectively. Persistent or worsened severity on rSE was associated with higher odds for primary outcome compared with those who improved, even when qSE was severe. CONCLUSION: Both rSE and change between qSE and rSE were strongly associated with the odds of death/NDI at 22-36 months in infants with moderate or severe HIE.

Abstract

The survival of preterm infants has steadily improved thanks to advances in perinatal and neonatal intensive clinical care. The focus is now on finding ways to improve morbidities, especially neurological outcomes. Although antenatal steroids and magnesium for preterm infants have become routine therapies, studies have mainly demonstrated short-term benefits for antenatal steroid therapy but limited evidence for impact on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. Further advances in neuroprotective and neurorestorative therapies, improved neuromonitoring modalities to optimize recruitment in trials, and improved biomarkers to assess the response to treatment are essential. Among the most promising agents, multipotential stem cells, immunomodulation, and anti-inflammatory therapies can improve neural outcomes in preclinical studies and are the subject of considerable ongoing research. In the meantime, bundles of care protecting and nurturing the brain in the neonatal intensive care unit and beyond should be widely implemented in an effort to limit injury and promote neuroplasticity. IMPACT: With improved survival of preterm infants due to improved antenatal and neonatal care, our focus must now be to improve long-term neurological and neurodevelopmental outcomes. This review details the multifactorial pathogenesis of preterm brain injury and neuroprotective strategies in use at present, including antenatal care, seizure management and non-pharmacological NICU care. We discuss treatment strategies that are being evaluated as potential interventions to improve the neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants born prematurely.

A variety of norm inequalities related to Bergman and Dirichlet spaces induced by radial weights are considered. Some of the results obtained can be considered as generalizations of certain known special cases while most of the estimates discovered are completely new. The second objective of the paper is to apply the obtained norm inequalities to relate the growth of the maximum modulus of a conformal map $f$, measured in terms of a weighted integrability condition, to a geometric quantity involving the area of image under $f$ of a disc centered at the origin. Information Forensics and Security (IFS) is an active R&D area whose goal is to ensure that people use devices, data, and intellectual properties for authorized purposes and to facilitate the gathering of solid evidence to hold perpetrators accountable. For over a quarter century since the 1990s, the IFS research area has grown tremendously to address the societal needs of the digital information era. The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has emerged as an important hub and leader in this area, and the article below celebrates some landmark technical contributions. In particular, we highlight the major technological advances on some selected focus areas in the field developed in the last 25 years from the research community and present future trends.

This paper explores Neural Operators to predict turbulent flows, focusing on the Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) model. It aims to develop reduced-order/surrogate models for turbulent flow simulations using Machine Learning. Different model configurations are analyzed, with U-NET structures (UNO and U-FNET) performing better than the standard FNO in accuracy and stability. U-FNET excels in predicting turbulence at higher Reynolds numbers. Regularization terms, like gradient and stability losses, are essential for stable and accurate predictions. The study emphasizes the need for improved metrics for deep learning models in fluid flow prediction. 11. Towards Traitor Tracing in Black-and-White-Box DNN Watermarking with Tardos-based Codes

Abstract

The growing popularity of Deep Neural Networks, which often require computationally expensive training and access to a vast amount of data, calls for accurate authorship verification methods to deter unlawful dissemination of the models and identify the source of the leak. In DNN watermarking the owner may have access to the full network (white-box) or only be able to extract information from its output to queries (black-box), but a watermarked model may include both approaches in order to gather sufficient evidence to then gain access to the network. Although there has been limited research in white-box watermarking that considers traitor tracing, this problem is yet to be explored in the black-box scenario. In this paper, we propose a black-and-white-box watermarking method for DNN classifiers that opens the door to collusion-resistant traitor tracing in black-box, exploiting the properties of Tardos codes, and making it possible to identify the source of the leak before access to the model is granted. While experimental results show that the method can successfully identify traitors, even when further attacks have been performed, we also discuss its limitations and open problems for traitor tracing in black-box., Comment: \c{opyright} 2023 IEEE. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Pretreatment CT Perfusion (CTP) parameters serve as reliable surrogates of collateral status (CS). In this study, we aim to assess the relationship between the novel compensation index (CI, Tmax > 4 s/Tmax > 6 s) and already established CTP collateral markers, namely cerebral blood volume (CBV) index and Hypoperfusion Intensity Ratio (HIR), with the reference standard American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (ASITN) collateral score (CS) on DSA. METHODS: In this retrospective study, inclusion criteria were the following: (a) CT angiography confirmed anterior circulation large vessel occlusion from 9 January 2017 to 10 January 2023; (b) diagnostic CT perfusion; and (c) underwent mechanical thrombectomy with documented DSA-CS. Student t-test, Mann-Whitney-U-test and Chi-square test were used to assess differences. Spearmans rank correlation and logistic regression analysis were used to assess associations. p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: In total, 223 patients (mean age: 67.8 ± 15.8, 56% female) met our inclusion criteria. The CI (ρ = 0.37, p < 0.001) and HIR (ρ = -0.29, p < 0.001) significantly correlated with DSA-CS. Whereas the CBV Index (ρ = 0.1, p > 0.05) did not correlate with DSA-CS. On multivariate logistic regression analysis taking into account age, sex, ASPECTS, tPA, premorbid mRS, NIH stroke scale, prior history of TIA, stroke, atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, heart disease and hypertension, only CI was not found to be independently associated with DSA-CS (adjusted OR = 1.387, 95% CI: 1.09-1.77, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: CI demonstrates a stronger correlation with DSA-CS compared to both the HIR and CBV Index where it may show promise as an additional quantitative pretreatment CS biomarker.

13. Beyond Good Intentions: Reporting the Research Landscape of NLP for Social Good

Abstract

With the recent advances in natural language processing (NLP), a vast number of applications have emerged across various use cases. Among the plethora of NLP applications, many academic researchers are motivated to do work that has a positive social impact, in line with the recent initiatives of NLP for Social Good (NLP4SG). However, it is not always obvious to researchers how their research efforts are tackling today's big social problems. Thus, in this paper, we introduce NLP4SG Papers, a scientific dataset with three associated tasks that can help identify NLP4SG papers and characterize the NLP4SG landscape by: (1) identifying the papers that address a social problem, (2) mapping them to the corresponding UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and (3) identifying the task they are solving and the methods they are using. Using state-of-the-art NLP models, we address each of these tasks and use them on the entire ACL Anthology, resulting in a visualization workspace that gives researchers a comprehensive overview of the field of NLP4SG. 15. How well does neonatal neuroimaging correlate with neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy?

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), the correlation between neonatal neuroimaging and the degree of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) is unclear. METHODS: Infants with HIE enrolled in a randomized controlled trial underwent neonatal MRI/MR spectroscopy (MRS) using a harmonized protocol at 4-6 days of age. The severity of brain injury was measured with a validated scoring system. Using proportional odds regression, we calculated adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for the associations between MRI/MRS measures of injury and primary ordinal outcome (i.e., normal, mild NDI, moderate NDI, severe NDI, or death) at age 2 years. RESULTS: Of 451 infants with MRI/MRS at a median age of 5 days (IQR 4.5-5.8), outcomes were normal (51%); mild (12%), moderate (14%), severe NDI (13%); or death (9%). MRI injury score (aOR 1.06, 95% CI 1.05, 1.07), severe brain injury (aOR 39.6, 95% CI 16.4, 95.6), and MRS lactate/n-acetylaspartate (NAA) ratio (aOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.4,1.8) were associated with worse primary outcomes. Infants with mild/moderate MRI brain injury had similar BSID-III cognitive, language, and motor scores as infants with no injury. CONCLUSION: In the absence of severe injury, brain MRI/MRS does not accurately discriminate the degree of NDI. Given diagnostic uncertainty, families need to be counseled regarding a range of possible neurodevelopmental outcomes. IMPACT: Half of all infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) enrolled in a large clinical trial either died or had neurodevelopmental impairment at age 2 years despite receiving therapeutic hypothermia. Severe brain injury and a global pattern of brain injury on MRI were both strongly associated with death or neurodevelopmental impairment. Infants with mild or moderate brain injury had similar mean BSID-III cognitive, language, and motor scores as infants with no brain injury on MRI. Given the prognostic uncertainty of brain MRI among infants with less severe degrees of brain injury, families should be counseled regarding a range of possible neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: An ancillary study of the High-Dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and Encephalopathy (HEAL) trial for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and treated with therapeutic hypothermia examined the hypothesis that neonates randomized to receive erythropoietin (Epo) would have a lower seizure risk and burden compared with neonates who received placebo. METHODS: Electroencephalograms (EEGs) from 7/17 HEAL trial centers were reviewed. Seizure presence was compared across treatment groups using a logistic regression model adjusting for treatment, HIE severity, center, and seizure burden prior to the first dose. Among neonates with seizures, differences across treatment groups in median maximal hourly seizure burden were assessed using adjusted quantile regression models. RESULTS: Forty-six of 150 (31%) neonates had EEG seizures (31% in Epo vs 30% in placebo, p = 0.96). Maximal hourly seizure burden after the study drug was not significantly different between groups (median 11.4 for Epo, IQR: 5.6, 18.1 vs median 9.7, IQR: 4.9, 21.0 min/h for placebo). CONCLUSION: In neonates with HIE treated with hypothermia who were randomized to Epo or placebo, we found no meaningful between-group difference in seizure risk or burden. These findings are consistent with overall trial results, which do not support Epo use for neonates with HIE undergoing therapeutic hypothermia. IMPACT: In the HEAL trial of erythropoietin (Epo) vs placebo for neonates with encephalopathy presumed due to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who were also treated with therapeutic hypothermia, electrographic seizures were detected in 31%, which is lower than most prior studies. Epo did not reduce the proportion of neonates with acute provoked seizures (31% in Epo vs 30% in placebo) or maximal hourly seizure burden after the study drug (median 11.4, IQR 5.6, 18.1 for Epo vs median 9.7, IQR 4.9, 21.0 min/h for placebo). There was no anti- or pro-convulsant effect of Epo when combined with therapeutic hypothermia for HIE.

Abstract

Radial correction distortion, applied by in-camera or out-camera software/firmware alters the supporting grid of the image so as to hamper PRNU-based camera attribution. Existing solutions to deal with this problem try to invert/estimate the correction using radial transformations parameterized with few variables in order to restrain the computational load; however, with ever more prevalent complex distortion corrections their performance is unsatisfactory. In this paper we propose an adaptive algorithm that by dividing the image into concentric annuli is able to deal with sophisticated corrections like those applied out-camera by third party software like Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Gimp and PT-Lens. We also introduce a statistic called cumulative peak of correlation energy (CPCE) that allows for an efficient early stopping strategy. In this article we improve the dimension and minimum distance bound of the the Hermitian Lifted Codes LRCs construction from L\'opez, Malmskog, Matthews, Pi\~nero and Wooters (L\'opez et. al.) via elementary univariarte polynomial division. They gave an asymptotic rate estimate of $0.007$. For the case where $q$ is a power of $2$ we improve the rate estimate to $0.010$ using univariate polynomial division.

21. Learning Robot Differential Movements Using a New Educational Robotics Simulation Tool

Abstract

The study of robotics has become a popular course among many educational programs, especially as a technical elective. A significant part of this course involves having the students learn how to program the movement of a robotic arm by controlling the velocity of its individual joint motors, a topic referred to as joint programming. They must learn how to develop algorithms to move the end effector of the arm by controlling the instantaneous velocity or some similar aspect, of each joint motor. To support this learning activity, physical or virtual robotic arms are typically employed. Visual observation of the movement of the arm provides feedback to the correctness of the student's joint programming algorithms. A problem arises with supporting the student in learning how to move the robotic arm with precise velocity along some path, a subtopic of joint programming referred to as differential movements. To develop this knowledge, the student must produce and test differential movement algorithms and have the capability to verify its correctness. Regardless of the type of arm used, physical or virtual, the human eye cannot notice the difference between a correct or incorrect movement of the end effector as this will involve noticing small differences in velocities. This study found that by simulating the process of spray painting on a virtual canvas, the correctness of a differential movement algorithm may be accessed by observing the resulting paint on the canvas as opposed to observing the movement of the arm. A model of a set of spray-painting equipment and a canvas was added to an existing virtual robotic arm educational tool and used in an Introduction to Robotics class offered at Florida Gulf Coast University in Spring 2019 and Spring 2020. The class offered in Spring 2019 used the virtual arm but without the spray-painting feature while the class offered in Spring 2020 used the new spray-painting feature that was added to the virtual arm. Exam results show that 59.4% of the students that used the new feature scored at least an 85% on the corresponding differential movements exam question compared to only 5.6% of the class that did not use the added spray-painting feature. The differential movement exam question simply asked the student to produce a differential movements algorithm to move the arm with a specified velocity alone a straight line.

Abstract

Outcomes of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) have improved since the widespread implementation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) in high-resource settings. While TH for NE in term and near-term infants has proven beneficial, 30-50% of infants with moderate-to-severe NE treated with TH still suffer death or significant impairments. There is therefore a critical need to find additional pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that improve the outcomes for these children. There are many potential candidates; however, it is unclear whether these interventions have additional benefits when used with TH. Although primary and delayed (secondary) brain injury starting in the latent phase after HI are major contributors to neurodisability, the very late evolving effects of tertiary brain injury likely require different interventions targeting neurorestoration. Clinical trials of seizure management and neuroprotection bundles are needed, in addition to current trials combining erythropoietin, stem cells, and melatonin with TH. IMPACT: The widespread use of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) in the treatment of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) has reduced the associated morbidity and mortality. However, 30-50% of infants with moderate-to-severe NE treated with TH still suffer death or significant impairments. This review details the pathophysiology of NE along with the evidence for the use of TH and other beneficial neuroprotective strategies used in term infants. We also discuss treatment strategies undergoing evaluation at present as potential adjuvant treatments to TH in NE.

Abstract

The polar orthogonal Grassmann code $C(\mathbb{O}_{3,6})$ is the linear code associated to the Grassmann embedding of the Dual Polar space of $Q^+(5,q)$. In this manuscript we study the minimum distance of this embedding. We prove that the minimum distance of the polar orthogonal Grassmann code $C(\mathbb{O}_{3,6})$ is $q^3-q^3$ for $q$ odd and $q^3$ for $q$ even. Our technique is based on partitioning the orthogonal space into different sets such that on each partition the code $C(\mathbb{O}_{3,6})$ is identified with evaluations of determinants of skew--symmetric matrices. Our bounds come from elementary algebraic methods counting the zeroes of particular classes of polynomials. We expect our techniques may be applied to other polar Grassmann codes.

Abstract

AI systems are becoming increasingly intertwined with human life. In order to effectively collaborate with humans and ensure safety, AI systems need to be able to understand, interpret and predict human moral judgments and decisions. Human moral judgments are often guided by rules, but not always. A central challenge for AI safety is capturing the flexibility of the human moral mind -- the ability to determine when a rule should be broken, especially in novel or unusual situations. In this paper, we present a novel challenge set consisting of rule-breaking question answering (RBQA) of cases that involve potentially permissible rule-breaking -- inspired by recent moral psychology studies. Using a state-of-the-art large language model (LLM) as a basis, we propose a novel moral chain of thought (MORALCOT) prompting strategy that combines the strengths of LLMs with theories of moral reasoning developed in cognitive science to predict human moral judgments. MORALCOT outperforms seven existing LLMs by 6.2% F1, suggesting that modeling human reasoning might be necessary to capture the flexibility of the human moral mind. We also conduct a detailed error analysis to suggest directions for future work to improve AI safety using RBQA. Abstract

Video stabilization is an in-camera processing commonly applied by modern acquisition devices. While significantly improving the visual quality of the resulting videos, it has been shown that such operation typically hinders the forensic analysis of video signals. In fact, the correct identification of the acquisition source usually based on Photo Response non-Uniformity (PRNU) is subject to the estimation of the transformation applied to each frame in the stabilization phase. A number of techniques have been proposed for dealing with this problem, which however typically suffer from a high computational burden due to the grid search in the space of inversion parameters. Our work attempts to alleviate these shortcomings by exploiting the parallelization capabilities of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), typically used for deep learning applications, in the framework of stabilised frames inversion. Moreover, we propose to exploit SIFT features {to estimate the camera momentum and} %to identify less stabilized temporal segments, thus enabling a more accurate identification analysis, and to efficiently initialize the frame-wise parameter search of consecutive frames. Experiments on a consolidated benchmark dataset confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing the required computational time and improving the source identification accuracy. {The code is available at \url{https://github.com/AMontiB/GPU-PRNU-SIFT}}.

Abstract

The photoresponse non-uniformity (PRNU) is a camera-specific pattern, widely adopted to solve multimedia forensics problems such as device identification or forgery detection. The theoretical analysis of this fingerprint customarily relies on a multiplicative model for the denoising residuals. This setup assumes that the nonlinear mapping from the scene irradiance to the preprocessed luminance, that is, the composition of the Camera Response Function (CRF) with the optical and digital preprocessing pipelines, is a gamma correction. Yet, this assumption seldom holds in practice. In this letter, we improve the multiplicative model by including the influence of this nonlinear mapping on the denoising residuals. We also propose a method to estimate this effect. Results evidence that the response of typical cameras deviates from a gamma correction. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is an important cause of death as well as long-term disability in survivors. Erythropoietin has been hypothesized to have neuroprotective effects in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, but its effects on neurodevelopmental outcomes when given in conjunction with therapeutic hypothermia are unknown. METHODS: In a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we assigned 501 infants born at 36 weeks or more of gestation with moderate or severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy to receive erythropoietin or placebo, in conjunction with standard therapeutic hypothermia. Erythropoietin (1000 U per kilogram of body weight) or saline placebo was administered intravenously within 26 hours after birth, as well as at 2, 3, 4, and 7 days of age. The primary outcome was death or neurodevelopmental impairment at 22 to 36 months of age. Neurodevelopmental impairment was defined as cerebral palsy, a Gross Motor Function Classification System level of at least 1 (on a scale of 0 [normal] to 5 [most impaired]), or a cognitive score of less than 90 (which corresponds to 0.67 SD below the mean, with higher scores indicating better performance) on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition. RESULTS: Of 500 infants in the modified intention-to-treat analysis, 257 received erythropoietin and 243 received placebo. The incidence of death or neurodevelopmental impairment was 52.5% in the erythropoietin group and 49.5% in the placebo group (relative risk, 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86 to 1.24; P = 0.74). The mean number of serious adverse events per child was higher in the erythropoietin group than in the placebo group (0.86 vs. 0.67; relative risk, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.57). CONCLUSIONS: The administration of erythropoietin to newborns undergoing therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy did not result in a lower risk of death or neurodevelopmental impairment than placebo and was associated with a higher rate of serious adverse events. Abstract

The Grassmannian is an important object in Algebraic Geometry. One of the many techniques used to study the Grassmannian is to build a vector space from its points in the projective embedding and study the properties of the resulting linear code. We introduce a new class of linear codes, called Affine Hermitian Grassman Codes. These codes are the linear codes resulting from an affine part of the projection of the Polar Hermitian Grassmann codes. They combine Polar Hermitian Grassmann codes and Affine Grassmann codes. We will determine the parameters of these codes.
