Search

We present the second data release of the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey 2 (MaDCoWS2). We expand from the equatorial first data release to most of the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey area, covering a total area of 6498 deg^2. The catalog consists of 133,036 S/N $\geq5$ galaxy cluster candidates at $0.1\leq z \leq2$, including 6790 candidates at z > 1.5. We train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify spurious detections, and include CNN-based cluster probabilities in the final catalog. We also compare the MaDCoWS2 sample with literature catalogs in the same area. The larger sample provides robust results that are consistent with our first data release. At S/N $\geq5$, we rediscover 59-91% of clusters in existing catalogs that lie in the unmasked area of MC2. The median positional offsets are under 250 kpc, and the standard deviation of the redshifts is 0.031(1+z). We fit a redshift-dependent power law to the relation between MaDCoWS2 S/N and observables from existing catalogs. Over the redshift ranges where the surveys overlap with MaDCoWS2, the lowest scatter is found between S/N and observables from optical/infrared surveys. We also assess the performance of our method using a mock light cone measuring purity and completeness as a function of cluster mass. The purity is above 90%, and we estimate the 50% completeness threshold at a virial mass of log(M/M$_\odot$)$\approx14.3$. SPT2349$-$56 is a protocluster discovered in the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey. In this paper, we study the kinematics of the galaxies found in the core of SPT2349$-$56 using high-resolution (1.55 kpc spatial resolution at $z = 4.303$) redshifted [CII] 158-$\mu$m data. Using the publicly available code 3D-Barolo, we analyze the seven far-infrared (FIR) brightest galaxies within the protocluster core. Based on conventional definitions for the detection of rotating discs, we classify six sources to be rotating discs in an actively star-forming protocluster environment, with weighted mean $V_{\mathrm{rot}}/\sigma_{\mathrm{disp}} = 4.5 \pm 1.3$. The weighted mean rotation velocity ($V_{\mathrm{rot}}$) and velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\mathrm{disp}}$) for the sample are $ 357.1 \pm 114.7$ km s$^{-1}$ and $43.5 \pm 23.5$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. We also assess the disc stability of the galaxies and find a mean Toomre parameter of $Q_\mathrm{T} = 0.9 \pm 0.3$. The galaxies show a mild positive correlation between disc stability and dynamical support. Using the position-velocity maps, we find that five sources further classify as disturbed discs, and one classifies as a strictly rotating disc. Our sample joins several observations at similar redshift with high $V/\sigma$ values, with the exception that they are morphologically disturbed, kinematically rotating and interacting galaxies in an extreme protocluster environment., Comment: 28 pages (9 appendix pages), 14 figures (7 in appendix), 7 tables (3 in appendix). Galaxy clusters, being the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe, are a powerful tool to study mass assembly at different epochs. At z$>$2 they give an unique opportunity to put solid constraints not only on dark matter halo growth, but also on the mechanisms of galaxy quenching and morphological transformation when the Universe was younger than 3.3 Gyr. However, the currently available sample of confirmed $z>2$ clusters remains very limited. We present the spectroscopic confirmation of the galaxy cluster CARLA J0950+2743 at $z=2.363\pm0.005$ and a new serendipitously discovered cluster, CARLA-Ser J0950+2743 at $z=2.243\pm0.008$ in the same region. We confirm eight star-forming galaxies in the first cluster, and five in the second by detecting [OII], [OIII] and $H\alpha$ emission lines. The analysis of a serendipitous X-ray observation of this field from Chandra reveals a counterpart with a total luminosity of $L_{0.5-5 keV} = 2.9\pm0.6\times10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Given the limited depth of the X-ray observations, we cannot distinguish the 1-D profile of the source from a PSF model, however, our statistical analysis of the 2-D profile favors an extended component that could be associated to a thermal contribution from the intra-cluster medium (ICM). If the extended X-ray emission is due to the hot ICM, the total dark matter mass for the two clusters would be $M_{200}=3.30 ^{+0.23}_{-0.26 (\mathrm{stat})}$ $^{+1.28}_{-0.96 (\mathrm{sys})} \times10^{14} M_{\odot}$. This makes our two clusters interesting targets for studies of the structure growth in the cosmological context. The evolution of galaxies depends on their masses and local environments; understanding when and how environmental quenching starts to operate remains a challenge. Furthermore, studies of the high-redshift regime have been limited to massive cluster members, owing to sensitivity limits or small fields of views when the sensitivity is sufficient, intrinsically biasing the picture of cluster evolution. In this work, we use stacking to investigate the average star formation history of more than 10,000 groups and clusters drawn from the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey 2 (MaDCoWS2). Our analysis covers near ultraviolet to far infrared wavelengths, for galaxy overdensities at $0.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 2.54$. We employ SED fitting to measure the specific star formation rates (sSFR) in four annular apertures with radii between 0 and 1000 kpc. At $z \gtrsim 1.6$, the average sSFR evolves similarly to the field in both the core and the cluster outskirts. Between $\overline{z} = 1.60$ and $\overline{z} = 1.35$, the sSFR in the core drops sharply, and continues to fall relative to the field sSFR at lower redshifts. We interpret this change as evidence that the impact of environmental quenching dramatically increases at $z \sim 1.5$, with the short time span of the transition suggesting that the environmental quenching mechanism dominant at this redshift operates on a rapid timescale. The Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey 2 (MaDCoWS2) is a new survey designed as the successor of the original MaDCoWS survey. MaDCoWS2 improves upon its predecessor by using deeper optical and infrared data and a more powerful detection algorithm (PZWav). As input to the search, we use grz photometry from DECaLS in combination with W1 and W2 photometry from the CatWISE2020 catalog to derive the photometric redshifts with full redshift probability distribution functions for WISE-selected galaxies. Cluster candidates are then detected using the PZWav algorithm to find three-dimensional galaxy overdensities from the sky positions and photometric redshifts. This paper provides the first MaDCoWS2 data release, covering 1461 (1838 without masking) deg^2 centered on the Hyper-SuprimeCam Subaru Strategic Program equatorial fields. Within this region, we derive a catalog of 22,970 galaxy cluster candidates detected at S/N>5. These clusters span the redshift range 0.11.5. We compare MaDCoWS2 to six existing catalogs in the area. We rediscover 60%-92% of the clusters in these surveys at S/N>5. The medians of the absolute redshift offset are <0.02 relative to these surveys, while the standard deviations are less than 0.06. The median offsets between the detection position from MaDCoWS2 and other surveys are less than 0.25 Mpc. We quantify the relation between S/N and gas mass, total mass, luminosity, and richness from other surveys using a redshift-dependent power law relation. This paper gives an overview of TEMPLATES, a JWST Early Release Science program that targeted four extremely bright, gravitationally lensed galaxies: two extremely dusty, two with low attenuation, as templates for galaxy evolution studies with JWST. TEMPLATES obtains a common set of spectral diagnostics for these 1.3 < z < 4.2 galaxies, in particular H alpha, Paschen alpha, and the rest-frame optical and near-infrared continua. In addition, two of the four targets have JWST coverage of [O III] 5007 Angstrom and H beta; the other two targets have have JWST coverage of PAH 3.3 micron and complementary ALMA data covering the [C II] 158 micron emission line. The science goals of TEMPLATES are to demonstrate attenuation-robust diagnostics of star formation, map the distribution of star formation, compare the young and old stellar populations, and measure the physical conditions of star formation and their spatial variation across the galaxies. In addition, TEMPLATES has technical goals to establish best practices for the Integral Field Units (IFU) within the NIRSpec and MIRI instruments, both in terms of observing strategy and in terms of data reduction. Robust galaxy cluster mass estimates are fundamental for constraining cosmological parameters from counts. For this reason, it is essential to search for tracers that, independent of the cluster's dynamical state, have a small intrinsic scatter and can be easily inferred from observations. This work uses a simulated data set to focus on photometric properties and explores different optical mass proxies including richness, optical luminosity, and total stellar mass. We have developed a probabilistic membership assignment that makes minimal assumptions about the galaxy cluster properties, limited to a characteristic radius, velocity dispersion, and spatial distribution. Applying the estimator to over 919 galaxy clusters with $z_{phot}<$0.45 within a mass range of $10^{12.8}$ to $10^{15}$ M$_\odot$, we obtain robust richness estimates that deviate from the median true value (from simulations) by -0.01$ \pm $0.12. The scatter in the mass-observable relations is $\sigma_{log_{10}(M|\mathcal{R})}=$0.181 $\pm$ 0.009 dex for richness, $\sigma_{log_{10}(M|L_\lambda)}=$0.151 $\pm$ 0.007 dex for optical luminosity, and $\sigma_{log_{10}(M|M_\lambda^*)}=$0.097 $\pm$ 0.005 dex for stellar mass. We also discuss membership assignment, completeness and purity, and the consequences of small centre and redshift offsets. We present JWST and ALMA results for the lensing system SPT0418-47, which includes a strongly-lensed, dusty star-forming galaxy at redshift z=4.225 and an associated multiply-imaged companion. JWST NIRCam and MIRI imaging observations presented in this paper were acquired as part of the Early Release Science program Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star Formation (TEMPLATES). This data set provides robust, mutiwavelength detection of stellar light in both the main (SPT0418A) and companion (SPT0418B) galaxies, while the ALMA detection of [C II] emission confirms that SPT0418B lies at the same redshift as SPT0418A. From a source plane reconstruction, we infer that the projected physical separation of the two galaxies is $4.42\pm 0.05$ kpc. We derive total magnifications of $\mu=29.5\pm1.2$ and $\mu=4.2\pm 0.9$ for SPT0418A and SPT0418B, respectively. We use both CIGALE and PROSPECTOR to derive stellar masses. The stellar mass ratio of SPT0418A and SPT0418B is approximately 4 to 1 ($4.5\pm 1.0$ for CIGALE and $4.2^{+1.9}_{-1.6}$ for PROSPECTOR). We also see evidence of extended structure associated with SPT0418A in the lensing reconstruction that is suggestive of a tidal feature. Interestingly, the star formation rates and stellar masses of both galaxies are consistent with the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at this epoch, indicating that this ongoing interaction has not noticeably elevated the star formation levels., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals,14 pages, 7 figures

We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z\sim$ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the H$\alpha$ and [NII] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are globally enriched to near-solar levels. While one source shows elevated [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios and broad H$\alpha$ emission consistent with the presence of an AGN in a $\gtrsim$1kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates. Utilizing ALMA rest-frame 380$\mu$m continuum and [CI]($^3$P$_2$-$^3$P$_1$) line maps we compare the spatial variation of the metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio in the two galaxies, finding the two properties to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of $z\sim$ 0 galaxies. One of the last remaining frontiers in optical/near-infrared observational astronomy is the low surface brightness regime (LSB, V-band surface brightness, $\mu_V>$ 27 AB mag/arcsec$^2$). These are the structures at very low stellar surface densities, largely unseen by even current wide-field surveys such as the Legacy Survey. Studying this domain promises to be transformative for our understanding of star formation in low-mass galaxies, the hierarchical assembly of galaxies and galaxy clusters, and the nature of dark matter. It is thus essential to reach depths beyond $\mu_V$ = 30 AB mag/arcsec$^2$ to detect the faintest extragalactic sources, such as dwarf galaxies and the stellar halos around galaxies and within galaxy clusters. The High Latitude Wide Area Survey offers a unique opportunity to statistically study the LSB universe at unprecedented depths in the IR over an area of $\sim$2000 square degrees. The high spatial resolution will minimize source confusion, allowing an unbiased characterization of LSB structures, including the identification of stars in nearby LSB galaxies and globular clusters. In addition, the combination of Roman with other upcoming deep imaging observatories (such as Rubin) will provide multi-wavelength coverage to derive photometric redshifts and infer the stellar populations of LSB objects., Comment: White paper submitted to the call for input for the Roman Space Telescope's Core Community Surveys

Dust grains absorb half of the radiation emitted by stars throughout the history of the universe, re-emitting this energy at infrared wavelengths. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are large organic molecules that trace millimeter-size dust grains and regulate the cooling of the interstellar gas within galaxies. Observations of PAH features in very distant galaxies have been difficult due to the limited sensitivity and wavelength coverage of previous infrared telescopes. Here we present JWST observations that detect the 3.3um PAH feature in a galaxy observed less than 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. The high equivalent width of the PAH feature indicates that star formation, rather than black hole accretion, dominates the infrared emission throughout the galaxy. The light from PAH molecules, large dust grains, and stars and hot dust are spatially distinct from one another, leading to order-of-magnitude variations in the PAH equivalent width and the ratio of PAH to total infrared luminosity across the galaxy. The spatial variations we observe suggest either a physical offset between the PAHs and large dust grains or wide variations in the local ultraviolet radiation field. We have observed the z=4.3 protocluster SPT2349-56 with ATCA with the aim of detecting radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) amongst the ~30 submillimeter galaxies identified in the structure. We detect the central complex of SMGs at 2.2\,GHz with a luminosity of L_2.2=(4.42pm0.56)x10^{25} W/Hz. The ASKAP also detects the source at 888 MHz, constraining the radio spectral index to alpha=-1.6pm0.3, consistent with ATCA non-detections at 5.5 and 9GHz, and implying L_1.4(rest)=(2.4pm0.3)x10^{26}W/Hz. This radio luminosity is about 100 times higher than expected from star formation, assuming the usual FIR-radio correlation, which is a clear indication of an AGN driven by a forming brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). None of the SMGs in SPT2349-56 show signs of AGN in any other diagnostics available to us (notably 12CO out to J=16, OH163um, CII/IR, and optical spectra), highlighting the radio continuum as a powerful probe of obscured AGN in high-z protoclusters. No other significant radio detections are found amongst the cluster members, consistent with the FIR-radio correlation. We compare these results to field samples of radio sources and SMGs, along with the 22 SPT-SMG gravitational lenses also observed in the ATCA program, as well as powerful radio galaxies at high redshifts. Our results allow us to better understand the effects of this gas-rich, overdense environment on early supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and cluster feedback. We estimate that (3.3pm0.7)x10^{38} W of power are injected into the growing ICM by the radio-loud AGN, whose energy over 100Myr is comparable to the binding energy of the gas mass of the central halo. The AGN power is also comparable to the instantaneous energy injection from supernova feedback from the 23 catalogued SMGs in the core region of 120kpc projected radius. Context. Deep spectroscopic surveys with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed that some of the brightest infrared sources in the sky correspond to concentrations of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFG) at high redshift. Among these, the SPT2349-56 protocluster system at z = 4.304 is amongst the most extreme examples due to its high source density and integrated star formation rate. Aims. We conducted a deep Lyman-$\alpha$ line emission survey around SPT2349-56 using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at Very Large Telescope (VLT) in order to characterize this uniquely dense environment. Methods. Taking advantage of the deep three-dimensional nature of this survey, we performed a sensitive search for Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) toward the core and northern extension of the protocluster, which correspond to the brightest infrared regions in this field. Using a smoothed narrowband image extracted from the MUSE datacube around the protocluster redshift, we searched for possible extended structures. Results. We identify only three LAEs at z = 4.3 in this field, in concordance with expectations for blank-fields, and an extended Lyman-$\alpha$ structure spatially associated with core of the protocluster. All the previously-identified DSFGs in this field are undetected in Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, consistent with the conspicuous dust obscuration in these systems. We find an extended Lyman-$\alpha$ structure, about $60 \times 60$ kpc$^{2}$ in size, and located 56 kpc west of the protocluster core. Three DSFGs coincide spatially with the location of this structure. We conclude that either the three co-spatial DSFGs or the protocluster core itself are feeding ionizing photons to the Lyman-$\alpha$ structure., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, submitted to A&A

We present results from end-to-end simulations of observations designed to constrain the rate of change in the expansion history of the Universe using the redshift drift of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest absorption lines along the lines-of-sight toward bright quasars. For our simulations we take Lyman-$\alpha$ forest lines extracted from Keck/HIRES spectra of bright quasars at $z>3$, and compare the results from these real quasar spectra with mock spectra generated via Monte Carlo realizations. We use the results of these simulations to assess the potential for a dedicated observatory to detect redshift drift, and quantify the telescope and spectrograph requirements for these observations. Relative to Liske et al. (2008), two main refinements in the current work are inclusion of quasars from more recent catalogs and consideration of a realistic observing strategy for a dedicated redshift drift experiment that maximizes $\dot{v}/\sigma_{\dot{v}}$. We find that using a dedicated facility and our designed observing plan, the redshift drift can be detected at $3\sigma$ significance in 15 years with a 25m telescope, given a spectrograph with long term stability with $R=50,000$ and 25% total system efficiency. To achieve this significance, the optimal number of targets is four quasars, with observing time weighted based upon $\dot{v}/\sigma_{\dot{v}}$ and object visibility. This optimized strategy leads to a 9% decrease in the telescope diameter or a 6% decrease in the required time to achieve the same S/N as for the idealized case of uniformly distributing time to the same quasars., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Breakthroughs in physics and astrophysics are often driven by technological advances, with the recent detection of gravitational waves being one such example. This white paper focuses upon how improved astrometric and spectroscopic measurements from a new generation of precise, accurate, and stable astronomical instrumentation can address two of the fundamental mysteries of our time -- dark energy and dark matter -- and probe the nature of spacetime. Instrumentation is now on the cusp of enabling new cosmological measurements based on redshifts (cosmic redshift drift) and extremely precise time-series measurements of accelerations, astrophysical source positions (astrometry), and angles (cosmic parallax). These allow tests of the fundamental framework of the universe (the Friedmann equations of general relativity and whether cosmic expansion is physically accelerating) and its contents (dark energy evolution and dark matter behavior), while also anchoring the cosmic distance scale ($H_0$)., Comment: Snowmass2021 White Paper, 15 pages, 2 figures

We present stellar mass fractions and composite luminosity functions (LFs) for a sample of \Ncl\ clusters from the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS) at a redshift range of $0.951 \leq z \leq 1.43$. Using SED fitting of optical and deep mid-infrared photometry, we establish the membership of objects along the lines-of-sight to these clusters and calculate the stellar masses of member galaxies. We find stellar mass fractions for these clusters largely consistent with previous works, including appearing to display a negative correlation with total cluster mass. We measure a composite $3.6~\mathrm{\mu m}$ LF down to $m^*+2.5$ for all 12 clusters. Fitting a Schechter function to the LF, we find a characteristic $3.6~\mathrm{\mu m}$ magnitude of $m^*=19.83\pm0.12$ and faint-end slope of $\alpha=-0.81\pm0.10$ for the full sample at a mean redshift of $\bar{z} = 1.18$. We also divide the clusters into high- and low-redshift bins at $\bar{z}=1.29$ and $\bar{z}=1.06$ respectively and measure a composite LF for each bin. We see a small, but statistically significant evolution in $m^*$ and $\alpha$ -- consistent with passive evolution -- when we study the joint fit to the two parameters, which is probing the evolution of faint cluster galaxies at $z\sim1$. ISCEA (Infrared Satellite for Cosmic Evolution Astrophysics) is a small astrophysics mission whose Science Goal is to discover how galaxies evolved in the cosmic web of dark matter at cosmic noon. Its Science Objective is to determine the history of star formation and its quenching in galaxies as a function of local density and stellar mass when the Universe was 3-5 Gyrs old (1.2 10 Mpc in each of 50 protocluster (cluster and cosmic web) fields at 1.2 < z < 2.1. ISCEA measures the star formation quenching factor in those fields, and galaxy kinematics with a precision < 50 km/s to deduce the 3D spatial distribution in each field. ISCEA will transform our understanding of galaxy evolution at cosmic noon. ISCEA is a small satellite observatory with a 30cm equivalent diameter aperture telescope with a FoV of 0.32 deg^2, and a multi-object spectrograph with a digital micro-mirror device (DMD) as its programmable slit mask. ISCEA will obtain spectra of 1000 galaxies simultaneously at an effective resolving power of R=1000, with 2.8"x2.8" slits, over the NIR wavelength range of 1.1 to 2.0 microns, a regime not accessible from the ground without large gaps in coverage. ISCEA will achieve a pointing accuracy of <= 2" FWHM over 200s. ISCEA will be launched into a Low Earth Orbit, with a prime mission of 2.5 years. ISCEA's space-qualification of DMDs opens a new window for spectroscopy from space, enabling revolutionary advances in astrophysics., Comment: 40 pages, 31 figures

The protocluster SPT2349$-$56 at $z\,{=}\,4.3$ contains one of the most actively star-forming cores known, yet constraints on the total stellar mass of this system are highly uncertain. We have therefore carried out deep optical and infrared observations of this system, probing rest-frame ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths. Using the positions of the spectroscopically-confirmed protocluster members, we identify counterparts and perform detailed source deblending, allowing us to fit spectral energy distributions in order to estimate stellar masses. We show that the galaxies in SPT2349$-$56 have stellar masses proportional to their high star-formation rates, consistent with other protocluster galaxies and field submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) around redshift 4. The galaxies in SPT2349$-$56 have on average lower molecular gas-to-stellar mass fractions and depletion timescales than field SMGs, although with considerable scatter. We construct the stellar-mass function for SPT2349$-$56 and compare it to the stellar-mass function of $z\,{=}\,1$ galaxy clusters, finding consistent shapes between the two. We measure rest-frame galaxy ultraviolet half-light radii from our HST-F160W imaging, finding that on average the galaxies in our sample are similar in size to typical star-forming galaxies at these redshifts. However, the brightest HST-detected galaxy in our sample, found near the luminosity-weighted centre of the protocluster core, remains unresolved at this wavelength. Galaxy clusters are an important tool for cosmology, and their detection and characterization are key goals for current and future surveys. Using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS) located 2,839 significant galaxy overdensities at redshifts $0.7\lesssim z\lesssim 1.5$, which included extensive follow-up imaging from the Spitzer Space Telescope to determine cluster richnesses. Concurrently, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) has produced large area mm-wave maps in three frequency bands along with a large catalog of Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) selected clusters, as part of its Data Release 5 (DR5). Using the maps and cluster catalog from DR5, we explore the scaling between SZ mass and cluster richness. We use complementary radio survey data from the Very Large Array, submillimeter data from Herschel, and ACT 224~GHz data to assess the impact of contaminating sources on the SZ signals. We then use a hierarchical Bayesian model to fit the mass-richness scaling relation. We find that MaDCoWS clusters have submillimeter contamination which is consistent with a gray-body spectrum, while the ACT clusters are consistent with no submillimeter emission on average. We find the best fit ACT SZ mass vs. MaDCoWS richness scaling relation has a slope of $\kappa = 1.84^{+0.15}_{-0.14}$, where the slope is defined as $M\propto \lambda_{15}^{\kappa}$ where $\lambda_{15}$ is the richness. We present an analysis of the intracluster light in the Frontier Field Cluster MACS J1149.5+2223 (z=0.544), which combines new and archival Hubble WFC3/IR imaging to provide continuous radial coverage out to 2.8 Mpc from the brightest cluster galaxy. Employing careful treatment of potential systematic biases and using data at the largest radii to determine the background sky level, we reconstruct the surface brightness profile out to a radius of 2 Mpc. This radius is the largest to which the intracluster light (ICL) has been measured for an individual cluster. Within this radius, we measure a total luminosity of 1.5e13 Lsun for the brightest cluster galaxy plus ICL light. From the profile and its logarithmic slope, we identify the transition from the brightest cluster galaxy to ICL at r~70 kpc. Remarkably, we also detect an inflection in the profile centered in the 1.2-1.7 Mpc (0.37-0.52 r200m) radial bin, a signature of an infall caustic in the stellar distribution. Based upon the shape and strength of the feature, we interpret it as potentially being at the splashback radius, although the radius is smaller than theoretical predictions. If this is the splashback radius, then it is the first such detection in the ICL and the first detection of the splashback radius for an individual cluster. The See Change survey was designed to make $z>1$ cosmological measurements by efficiently discovering high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and improving cluster mass measurements through weak lensing. This survey observed twelve galaxy clusters with the Hubble Space Telescope spanning the redshift range $z=1.13$ to $1.75$, discovering 57 likely transients and 27 likely SNe Ia at $z\sim 0.8-2.3$. As in similar previous surveys (Dawson et al. 2009), this proved to be a highly efficient use of HST for SN observations; the See Change survey additionally tested the feasibility of maintaining, or further increasing, the efficiency at yet higher redshifts, where we have less detailed information on the expected cluster masses and star-formation rates. We find that the resulting number of SNe Ia per orbit is a factor of $\sim 8$ higher than for a field search, and 45% of our orbits contained an active SN Ia within 22 rest-frame days of peak, with one of the clusters by itself yielding 6 of the SNe Ia. We present the survey design, pipeline, and SN discoveries. Novel features include fully blinded SN searches, the first random forest candidate classifier for undersampled IR data (with a 50% detection threshold within 0.05 magnitudes of human searchers), real-time forward-modeling photometry of candidates, and semi-automated photometric classifications and follow-up forecasts. We also describe the spectroscopic follow-up, instrumental in measuring host-galaxy redshifts. The cosmology analysis of our sample will be presented in a companion paper., Comment: ApJ preprint

The CatWISE2020 Catalog consists of 1,890,715,640 sources over the entire sky selected from WISE and NEOWISE survey data at 3.4 and 4.6 $\mu$m (W1 and W2) collected from 2010 Jan. 7 to 2018 Dec. 13. This dataset adds two years to that used for the CatWISE Preliminary Catalog (Eisenhardt et al., 2020), bringing the total to six times as many exposures spanning over sixteen times as large a time baseline as the AllWISE catalog. The other major change from the CatWISE Preliminary Catalog is that the detection list for the CatWISE2020 Catalog was generated using ${\it crowdsource}$ (Schlafly et al. 2019), while the CatWISE Preliminary Catalog used the detection software used for AllWISE. These two factors result in roughly twice as many sources in the CatWISE2020 Catalog. The scatter with respect to ${\it Spitzer}$ photometry at faint magnitudes in the COSMOS field, which is out of the Galactic plane and at low ecliptic latitude (corresponding to lower WISE coverage depth) is similar to that for the CatWISE Preliminary Catalog. The 90% completeness depth for the CatWISE2020 Catalog is at W1=17.7 mag and W2=17.5 mag, 1.7 mag deeper than in the CatWISE Preliminary Catalog. From comparison to ${\it Gaia}$, CatWISE2020 motions are accurate at the 20 mas yr$^{-1}$ level for W1$\sim$15 mag sources, and at the $\sim100$ mas yr$^{-1}$ level for W1$\sim$17 mag sources. This level of precision represents a 12$\times$ improvement over AllWISE. Galactic outflows of molecular gas are a common occurrence in galaxies and may represent a mechanism by which galaxies self-regulate their growth, redistributing gas that could otherwise have formed stars. We previously presented the first survey of molecular outflows at z > 4 towards a sample of massive, dusty galaxies. Here we characterize the physical properties of the molecular outflows discovered in our survey. Using low-redshift outflows as a training set, we find agreement at the factor-of-two level between several outflow rate estimates. We find molecular outflow rates 150-800Msun/yr and infer mass loading factors just below unity. Among the high-redshift sources, the molecular mass loading factor shows no strong correlations with any other measured quantity. The outflow energetics are consistent with expectations for momentum-driven winds with star formation as the driving source, with no need for energy-conserving phases. There is no evidence for AGN activity in our sample, and while we cannot rule out deeply-buried AGN, their presence is not required to explain the outflow energetics, in contrast to nearby obscured galaxies with fast outflows. The fraction of the outflowing gas that will escape into the circumgalactic medium (CGM), though highly uncertain, may be as high as 50%. This nevertheless constitutes only a small fraction of the total cool CGM mass based on a comparison to z~2-3 quasar absorption line studies, but could represent >~10% of the CGM metal mass. Massive galaxy-scale outflows of gas are one of the most commonly-invoked mechanisms to regulate the growth and evolution of galaxies throughout the universe. While the gas in outflows spans a large range of temperatures and densities, the cold molecular phase is of particular interest because molecular outflows may be capable of suppressing star formation in galaxies by removing the star-forming gas. We have conducted the first survey of molecular outflows at z > 4, targeting 11 strongly-lensed dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) with high-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of OH 119um absorption as an outflow tracer. In this first paper, we give an overview of the survey, focusing on the detection rate and structure of molecular outflows. We find unambiguous evidence for outflows in 8/11 (73%) galaxies, more than tripling the number known at z > 4. This implies that molecular winds in z > 4 DSFGs must have both a near-unity occurrence rate and large opening angles to be detectable in absorption. Lensing reconstructions reveal that 500pc-scale clumpy structures in the outflows are common. The individual clumps are not directly resolved, but from optical depth arguments we expect that future observations will require 50-200pc spatial resolution to do so. We do not detect high-velocity [CII] wings in any of the sources with clear OH outflows, indicating that [CII] is not a reliable tracer of molecular outflows. Our results represent a first step toward characterizing molecular outflows at z > 4 at the population level, demonstrating that large-scale outflows are ubiquitous among early massive, dusty galaxies., Comment: ApJ accepted. 28 pages, 12 figures + appendix. We present APEX-LABOCA 870 micron observations of the fields surrounding the nine brightest, high-redshift, unlensed objects discovered in the South Pole Telescope's (SPT) 2500 square degrees survey. Initially seen as point sources by SPT's 1-arcmin beam, the 19-arcsec resolution of our new data enables us to deblend these objects and search for submillimetre (submm) sources in the surrounding fields. We find a total of 98 sources above a threshold of 3.7 sigma in the observed area of 1300 square arcminutes, where the bright central cores resolve into multiple components. After applying a radial cut to our LABOCA sources to achieve uniform sensitivity and angular size across each of the nine fields, we compute the cumulative and differential number counts and compare them to estimates of the background, finding a significant overdensity of approximately 10 at 14 mJy. The large overdensities of bright submm sources surrounding these fields suggest that they could be candidate protoclusters undergoing massive star-formation events. Photometric and spectroscopic redshifts of the unlensed central objects range from 3 to 7, implying a volume density of star-forming protoclusters of approximately 0.1 per giga-parsec cube. If the surrounding submm sources in these fields are at the same redshifts as the central objects, then the total star-formation rates of these candidate protoclusters reach 10,000 solar masses per year, making them much more active at these redshifts than what has been seen so far in both simulations and observations.

We present a study of the central radio activity of galaxy clusters at high redshift. Using a large sample of galaxy clusters at $0.7

The Gaia map of the Milky Way reveals a pair of triangular features at nearly symmetric locations on opposite sides of the Galactic Center. In this paper we explore the implications of these features assuming they are manifestations of a caustic ring in the dark matter distribution of the Milky Way halo. The existence of a series of such rings is predicted by the Caustic Ring Model. The model's phase-space distribution is that acquired by a rethermalizing Bose-Einstein condensate of axions or axion-like particles. We show that dust is gravitationally entrained by cold axion flows and propose this as an explanation for the sharpness of the triangular features. The locations of the features imply that we on Earth are much closer to the fifth caustic ring than thought on the basis of pre-Gaia observations. Most likely we are inside its tricusp cross-section. In that case the dark matter density on Earth is dominated by four cold flows, termed Big, Little, Up and Down. If we are outside the tricusp cross-section the dark matter density on Earth is dominated by two cold flows, Big and Little. We use the triangular features in the Gaia map, and a matching feature in the IRAS map, to estimate the velocity vectors and densities of the four locally dominant flows., Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures. Passive early-type galaxies dominate cluster cores at z $\lesssim$1.5. At higher redshift, cluster core galaxies are observed to have still on-going star-formation, fuelled by cold molecular gas. We measure the molecular gas reservoir of the central region around the radio-loud AGN in the cluster CARLA J1103+3449 at z=1.44 with NOEMA. The AGN synchrotron emission dominates the continuum emission at 94.48 GHz, and we measure its flux at the AGN position and at the position of two radio jets. Combining our measurements with published results over the range 4.71 GHz-94.5 GHz, we obtain a flat spectral index $\alpha = 0.14 \pm 0.03$ for the AGN core emission, and a steeper index $\alpha = 1.43 \pm 0.04$ and $\alpha = 1.15 \pm 0.04$ at positions close to the western and eastern lobe, respectively. The total spectral index is $\alpha = 0.92 \pm 0.02$ over the range 73.8 MHz-94.5 GHz. We detect two CO(2-1) emission lines, both blue-shifted with respect to the AGN. Their emission corresponds to two regions, ~17 kpc south-east and ~14 kpc south-west of the AGN, not associated with galaxies. In these two regions, we find a total massive molecular gas reservoir of $M_{gas}$ = 3.9 $\pm$ 0.4 $10^{10} M_{\odot}$, which dominates (~ 60%) the central total molecular gas reservoir. These results can be explained by massive cool gas flows in the center of the cluster. The AGN early-type host is not yet quenched; its star formation rate is consistent with being on the main sequence of star-forming galaxies in the field (SFR~30-140 $M_{\odot}$/yr), and the cluster core molecular gas reservoir is expected to feed the AGN and the host star-formation before quiescence. The other cluster confirmed members show star formation rates at ~2 $\sigma$ below the field main sequence at similar redshifts and do not have molecular gas masses larger than galaxies of similar stellar mass in the field., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, A&A, accepted for publication

We present a multi-wavelength investigation of the radio galaxy population in the galaxy cluster MOO J1506+5137 at $z$=1.09$\pm$0.03, which in previous work we identified as having multiple complex radio sources. The combined dataset used in this work includes data from the Low-Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS). We find that there are five radio sources which are all located within 500 kpc ($\sim$1$^{\prime}$) of the cluster center and have radio luminosities $P_{\mathrm{1.4GHz}}$ > 1.6$\times$10$^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. The typical host galaxies are among the highest stellar mass galaxies in the cluster. The exceptional radio activity among the massive galaxy population appears to be linked to the dynamical state of the cluster. The galaxy distribution suggests an ongoing merger, with a subgroup found to the northwest of the main cluster. Further, two of the five sources are classified as bent-tail sources with one being a potential wide-angle tail (WAT)/hybrid morphology radio source (HyMoRS) indicating a dynamic environment. The cluster also lies in a region of the mass-richness plane occupied by other merging clusters in the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS). The data suggest that during the merger phase radio activity can be dramatically enhanced, which would contribute to the observed trend of increased radio activity in clusters with increasing redshift., Comment: 17 pages and 8 figures. We report the discovery and confirmation of a bright quasi-stellar object (QSO), 2MASS J13260399+7023462, at $z=2.889$. This QSO is the first spectroscopically confirmed candidate from an ongoing search using the combination of Gaia and WISE photometry to identify bright QSOs at $z>2$, the redshift regime for which the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest is accessible with ground-based facilities. With a Gaia apparent magnitude $G=16.07$, 2MASS J13260399+7023462 is one of the brightest QSOs known at $z>2$, with only 15 currently known brighter QSOs. Given its inferred $M_{1450,AB}$ magnitude and redshift, it is among the most luminous objects in the Universe; the inferred black hole mass and corresponding Eddington ratio are ($2.7 \pm 0.4$) $\times$ 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $1.3 \pm 0.3$, respectively. The properties of galaxy clusters as a function of redshift can be utilized as an important cosmological tool. We present initial results from a program of follow-up observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) in high redshift galaxy clusters detected at infrared wavelengths in the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS). Using typical on-source integration times of 3-4 hours per cluster, MUSTANG2 on the Green Bank Telescope was able to measure strong detections of SZE decrements and statistically significant masses on 14 out of 16 targets. On the remaining two, weaker (3.7 sigma) detections of the SZE signal and strong upper limits on the masses were obtained. In this paper we present masses and pressure profiles of each target and outline the data analysis used to recover these quantities. Of the clusters with strong detections, three show significantly flatter pressure profiles while, from the MUSTANG2 data, five others show signs of disruption at their cores. However, outside of the cores of the clusters, we were unable to detect significant amounts of asymmetry. Finally, there are indications that the relationship between optical richness used by MaDCoWS and SZE-inferred mass may be significantly flatter than indicated in previous studies., Comment: Accepted by ApJ ; 20 pages, 7 figures

The Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS) provides a catalog of high-redshift ($0.7\lesssim z\lesssim 1.5$) infrared-selected galaxy clusters. However, the verification of the ionized intracluster medium, indicative of a collapsed and nearly virialized system, is made challenging by the high redshifts of the sample members. The main goal of this work is to test the capabilities of the Atacama Compact Array (ACA; also known as the Morita Array) Band 3 observations, centered at about 97.5 GHz, to provide robust validation of cluster detections via the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. Using a pilot sample that comprises ten MaDCoWS galaxy clusters, accessible to ACA and representative of the median sample richness, we infer the masses of the selected galaxy clusters and respective detection significance by means of a Bayesian analysis of the interferometric data. Our test of the "Verification with the ACA - Localization and Cluster Analysis" (VACA LoCA) program demonstrates that the ACA can robustly confirm the presence of the virialized intracluster medium in galaxy clusters previously identified in full-sky surveys. In particular, we obtain a significant detection of the SZ effect for seven out of the ten VACA LoCA clusters. We note that this result is independent of the assumed pressure profile. However, the limited angular dynamic range of the ACA in Band 3 alone, short observational integration times, and possible contamination from unresolved sources limit the detailed characterization of the cluster properties and the inference of the cluster masses within scales appropriate for the robust calibration of mass-richness scaling relations., Comment: 19 pages (including appendices), 14 figures, and 4 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

We present an extensive ALMA spectroscopic follow-up programme of the $z\,{=}\,4.3$ structure SPT2349$-$56, one of the most actively star-forming proto-cluster cores known, to identify additional members using their [C{\sc ii}] 158\,$\mu$m and \mbox{CO(4--3)} lines. In addition to robustly detecting the 14 previously published galaxies in this structure, we identify a further 15 associated galaxies at $z\,{=}\,4.3$, resolving 55$\,{\pm}\,$5\,per cent of the 870-$\mu$m flux density at 0.5\,arcsec resolution compared to 21\,arcsec single-dish data. These galaxies are distributed into a central core containing 23 galaxies extending out to 300\,kpc in diameter, and a northern extension, offset from the core by 400\,kpc, containing three galaxies. We discovered three additional galaxies in a red {\it Herschel\/}-SPIRE source 1.5\,Mpc from the main structure, suggesting the existence of many other sources at the same redshift as SPT2349$-$56 that are not yet detected in the limited coverage of our data. An analysis of the velocity distribution of the central galaxies indicates that this region may be virialized with a mass of (9$\pm$5)$\,{\times}\,$10$^{12}$\,M$_{\odot}$, while the two offset galaxy groups are about 30 and 60\,per cent less massive and show significant velocity offsets from the central group. We calculate the [C{\sc ii}] and far-infrared number counts, and find evidence for a break in the [C{\sc ii}] luminosity function. We estimate the average SFR density within the region of SPT2349$-$56 containing single-dish emission (a proper diametre of 720\,kpc), assuming spherical symmetry, to be roughly 4$\,{\times}\,10^4$\,M$_{\odot}$\,yr$^{-1}$\,Mpc$^{-3}$; this may be an order of magnitude greater than the most extreme examples seen in simulations., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS Feb. 25, 2020. The Beyond Ultra-deep Frontier Fields and Legacy Observations (BUFFALO) is a 101 orbit + 101 parallel Cycle 25 Hubble Space Telescope Treasury program taking data from 2018-2020. BUFFALO will expand existing coverage of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) in WFC3/IR F105W, F125W, and F160W and ACS/WFC F606W and F814W around each of the six HFF clusters and flanking fields. This additional area has not been observed by HST but is already covered by deep multi-wavelength datasets, including Spitzer and Chandra. As with the original HFF program, BUFFALO is designed to take advantage of gravitational lensing from massive clusters to simultaneously find high-redshift galaxies which would otherwise lie below HST detection limits and model foreground clusters to study properties of dark matter and galaxy assembly. The expanded area will provide a first opportunity to study both cosmic variance at high redshift and galaxy assembly in the outskirts of the large HFF clusters. Five additional orbits are reserved for transient followup. We present the results from a study with NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to determine the radio morphologies of extended radio sources and the properties of their host galaxies in 50 massive galaxy clusters at z~1. We find a majority of the radio morphologies to be Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type IIs. By analyzing the infrared counterparts of the radio sources, we find that ~40% of the host galaxies are the candidate brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) and ~83% are consistent with being one of the top six most massive galaxies in the cluster. We investigate the role of environmental factors on the radio-loud AGN population by examining correlations between environmental and radio-galaxy properties. We find that the highest stellar mass hosts ($M_{*} \gtrsim$ 4$\times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) are confined to the cluster center and host compact jets. There is evidence for an increase in the size of the jets with cluster-centric radius, which may be attributed to the decreased ICM pressure confinement with increasing radius. Besides this correlation, there are no other significant correlations between the properties of the radio-AGN (luminosity, morphology, or size) and environmental properties (cluster richness and location within the cluster). The fact that there are more AGN in the cluster environment than the field at this epoch, combined with the lack of strong correlation between galaxy and environmental properties, argues that the cluster environment fosters radio activity but does not solely drive the evolution of these sources at this redshift., Comment: Accepted by ApJ for publication, 16 pages, and 9 figures

We constrain the evolution of the brightest cluster galaxy plus intracluster light (BCG+ICL) using an ensemble of 42 galaxy groups and clusters that span redshifts of z = 0.05-1.75 and masses of $M_{500,c}=2\times10^{13}-10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ Specifically, we measure the relationship between the BCG+ICL stellar mass $M_\star$ and $M_{500,c}$ at projected radii 10 < r < 100 kpc for three different epochs. At intermediate redshift (z = 0.40), where we have the best data, we find $M_\star\propto M_{500,c}^{0.48\pm0.06}$. Fixing the exponent of this power law for all redshifts, we constrain the normalization of this relation to be $2.08\pm0.21$ times higher at z = 0.40 than at high redshift (z = 1.55). We find no change in the relation from intermediate to low redshift (z = 0.10). In other words, for fixed $M_{500,c}$, $M_\star$ at 10 < r < 100 kpc increases from z = 1.55 to z = 0.40 and not significantly thereafter. Theoretical models predict that the physical mass growth of the cluster from z = 1.5 to z = 0 within $r_{500,c}$ is a factor of 1.4, excluding evolution due to definition of $r_{500,c}$. We find that $M_\star$ within the central 100 kpc increases by a factor of 3.8 over the same period. Thus, the growth of $M_\star$ in this central region is more than a factor of two greater than the physical mass growth of the cluster as a whole. Furthermore, the concentration of the BCG+ICL stellar mass, defined by the ratio of stellar mass within 10 kpc to the total stellar mass within 100 kpc, decreases with increasing $M_{500,c}$ at all redshift. We interpret this result as evidence for inside-out growth of the BCG+ICL over the past ten Gyrs, with stellar mass assembly occuring at larger radii at later times., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 9 pages, 6 figures

CatWISE is a program to catalog sources selected from combined ${\it WISE}$ and ${\it NEOWISE}$ all-sky survey data at 3.4 and 4.6 $\mu$m (W1 and W2). The CatWISE Preliminary Catalog consists of 900,849,014 sources measured in data collected from 2010 to 2016. This dataset represents four times as many exposures and spans over ten times as large a time baseline as that used for the AllWISE Catalog. CatWISE adapts AllWISE software to measure the sources in coadded images created from six-month subsets of these data, each representing one coverage of the inertial sky, or epoch. The catalog includes the measured motion of sources in 8 epochs over the 6.5 year span of the data. From comparison to ${\it Spitzer}$, the SNR=5 limits in magnitudes in the Vega system are W1=17.67 and W2=16.47, compared to W1=16.96 and W2=16.02 for AllWISE. From comparison to ${\it Gaia}$, CatWISE positions have typical accuracies of 50 mas for stars at W1=10 mag and 275 mas for stars at W1=15.5 mag. Proper motions have typical accuracies of 10 mas yr$^{-1}$ and 30 mas yr$^{-1}$ for stars with these brightnesses, an order of magnitude better than from AllWISE. As astronomy moves into the era of large-scale time-domain surveys, we are seeing a flood of new transient and variable sources which will reach biblical proportions with the advent of LSST. A key strategic challenge for astronomy in this era is the lack of suitable spectroscopic followup facilities. In response to this need, we have developed the PolyOculus approach for producing large-area-equivalent telescopes by using fiber optics to link modules of multiple semi-autonomous, small, inexpensive, commercial-off-the-shelf telescopes. Crucially, this scalable design has construction costs which are $>10x$ lower than equivalent traditional large-area telescopes. In addition, PolyOculus is inherently highly automated and well-suited for remote operations. Development of this technology will enable the expansion of major research efforts in the LSST era to a host of smaller universities and colleges, including primarily-undergraduate institutions, for budgets consistent with their educational expenditures on similar facilities. We propose to develop and deploy a 1.6-m prototype demonstrator at the Mt. We propose an experiment, the Cosmic Accelerometer, designed to yield velocity precision of $\leq 1$ cm/s with measurement stability over years to decades. The first-phase Cosmic Accelerometer, which is at the scale of the Astro2020 Small programs, will be ideal for precision radial velocity measurements of terrestrial exoplanets in the Habitable Zone of Sun-like stars. At the same time, this experiment will serve as the technical pathfinder and facility core for a second-phase larger facility at the Medium scale, which can provide a significant detection of cosmological redshift drift on a 6-year timescale. This larger facility will naturally provide further detection/study of Earth twin planet systems as part of its external calibration process. This experiment is fundamentally enabled by a novel low-cost telescope technology called PolyOculus, which harnesses recent advances in commercial off the shelf equipment (telescopes, CCD cameras, and control computers) combined with a novel optical architecture to produce telescope collecting areas equivalent to standard telescopes with large mirror diameters.
