Using HRI theory to inform robot development is an important, but difficult, endeavor. This paper explores the relationship between HRI theory and HRI practice through a design project on the development of design guidelines for human-robot communication together with a dairy farming robot manufacturer. The design guidelines, a type of intermediate-level knowledge, were intended to enrich the specialized knowledge of the company on farming context with relevant academic knowledge. In this process, we identified that HRI theories were used as a frame, a tool, best practices, and a reference; while the HRI practice provided a context, a reference, and validation for the theories. Our intended contribution is to propose a means to facilitate exchanges both ways between HRI theory and practice and add to the emerging repertoire of designerly ways of producing knowledge in HRI., Human Information Communication Design, Industrial Design Engineering

Combining intermittent renewable electricity (IRE) with carbon capture and utilisation is urgently needed in the chemical sector. In this context, microbial electrosynthesis (MES) has gained attention. It can electrochemically produce hexanoic acid, a value-added chemical, from CO2. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding how the intermittency of renewable electricity could impact the design of a MES plant. We studied this using Aspen Plus models. A MES plant that was powered by constant grid electricity could operate from 100% down to 70% of its nominal capacity, at which point the heat exchangers and the internal geometrical design of the distillation towers became bottlenecks. The levelised production cost of hexanoic acid (LPCC6A) was estimated at 4.0 €/kg. Switching to IRE supply increased LPCC6A to 5.3 €/kg (for wind electricity) and 4.7 €/kg (for hybrid renewable electricity). A battery energy storage system (BESS) was deployed. The lowest LPCC6A was found at a BESS installation of 29 GJ/h for wind electricity (5.1 €/kg) and at 12 GJ/h for hybrid renewable electricity (4.7 €/kg). In both situations, the volume flexibility of the MES plant was not improved. Port systems face numerous challenges, including limited storage capacity at terminal yards, congestion in road port access due to overwhelmed infrastructure, and inefficient inter-terminal transportation. Close dry ports, situated between 10-40 km from the port, offer a potential solution, but lack flexible and reliable transport connections that efficiently handle transportation without adding extra handling moves. Recent technological advances in rail systems, particularly fully automated magnetic levitation (maglev) cargo shuttles, provide promising solutions for connecting dry ports with seaport terminals. This research explores the integration of maglev technology into port logistics, focusing on connecting a dry port terminal to seaport terminals, with a direct connection to the berth. Using the Transport System Bögl (TSB) Cargo system as a reference, five different designs were developed for integration. These designs required a redesign of the dry port and terminal yard, as well as the design of the system’s berth connection and connections between all terminals. Simulation modeling using Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation software evaluated the performance of these designs under various scenarios based on Port of Hamburg demand input data. Results showed that all designs improved median berth times compared to the German benchmark of 18.96 hours, with Design 5 demonstrating the best performance together with Design 2. Recommendations include continued collaboration with port authorities through simulation case studies, serving as proof of performance for potential integration projects, and exploration of collaboration opportunities with smaller scale ports facing space availability and road access issues. Further research should expand the model to accommodate new export container loading requirements and include all terminals, while studying new algorithms to balance the volumes and requests of all three terminals. To date there is a wide range of wave reanalysis and hindcasts available to the scientific and engineering community which are commonly used for different applications, including downscaling or the estimation of the wave energy resource (Morim et al., 2022). These long datasets have been created using different combinations of forcing fields, physical parameterizations, and numerical choices (like spatial and spectral resolution). All these elements have a direct effect on the accuracy of the wave models’ output (e.g., Alday et al., 2021) and thus, they are one of the main reasons for the differences between these products. In the present study we analyze the significant wave heights and peak periods characteristics from a selection of global datasets. We additionally include results from a hindcast created using the WAVEWATCH III model, with adjustments specially aimed to reduce uncertainties of the wave energy resource along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Models’ output is compared with buoys and altimeter data from the latest ESA (European Space Agency) CCI Sea State V3 product. Preliminary validation of the hindcast we have generated for the North Atlantic already show an important bias reduction for wave heights in the 2.5 to 11.5 range compared to ERA5 wave product. Using the relevant wave parameters, we estimate the power density and quantify the differences between databases. Then, based on scatter diagrams obtained from the joint distributions of significant wave height and peak period, the differences in the power captured by wave energy converters (WEC) related to different wave data sources will be quantified (e.g., Babarit et al., 2011; Henriques et al., 2016)., Offshore Engineering

A series of short and mid-term guidelines have been established due to the pursuit to offer clean energy and reduce the environmental impact in the Mediterranean and European environment. Currently, the scientific community and the industrial sector promote to find new technologies and means to achieve these regulations. Efforts to provide sustainable ways to supply electricity in Italy have led to the exploration of marine renewable energies (MRE) in the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, in the Ligurian Sea, where the wave climate can provide one of the higher energy sources, represents an optimal opportunity for supplying this energy resource to coastal cities. However, the wave conditions are not as significant as those in other marine regions around the world. There are several devices currently developed which can be applicable to the region. Hence, an evaluation from a technical and economic perspective is advised. Additionally we also investigate the scaling and survival considerations for Wave Energy Converters (WECs) when facing extreme storm events. The proposed study offers the evaluation of a sustainable alternative for powering the electricity mix in the Liguria region, through the exploitation of the wave energy resource. Climate change is expected to have an impact on wind patterns, and therefore the generation of waves. Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), provides various realization of outputs integrated global coupled models for different centuries. Wind quality is a cornerstone for wave energy as it is the primary generation driver in any wave model. Therefore, proper quantification of wind wave interactions are key in the evaluation of future wave energy potential. In this study, a wave hindcast for the North-East Atlantic, using the WaveWatchIII model forced by CMIP6 winds is presented. The model uses a grid of 0.25° of spatial resolution, covering a longitude range of -21.0° to 10° (west to east) and a latitude range of 18° to 80° (south to north). The main objective of this work is to assess the quality of historical winds from all the CMIP6 wind data that are available under the first realization criteria (r1i1p1f1) at the time of this study. This leads to understanding limitations and proposing a selection method to choose the optimal wind dataset to force the wave model within the analyzed area. Thus, the optimal CMIP6 historical winds for the North-East Atlantic are used to create a 10 years hindcast(from 2003 to 2012). To further assess the suitability of the selected winds dataset for wave generation, results are compared with the ERA5 wave product. The available CMIP6 models show region-specific variations depending on the Regional Climate models used for their developments. In order to accelerate the transition from carbon fuels to renewable energy sources, it is essential to extend our knowledge of the resources’ availability to further improve or adjust the design of extraction devices. In the present paper, a first characterization of the tidal stream resource along the coast of The Netherlands is performed using a high-resolution unstructured grid implementation of the Thetis model. Extensive validation of the sea surface elevations was done by comparing with existing networks of tide gauges in the North Sea. The simulations from this study show that the highest tidal current intensities are generated mainly at Den Helder and Oost Vlieland, reaching values >1.5 m s−1 and power density estimates that are most frequently close to 300 W m−2 and that can reach values ≥ 900 W m−2. Given the relatively reduced depths where these ‘‘hot spots’’ are found, most existing stream turbines will require further development to operate. Due to the heavy dependence on fossil-fuels as raw materials, the defossilization of feedstocks in the petrochemical industry represents a challenge. A large number of possible process routes that use alternative carbon sources (ACS) like CO2, biomass, and waste are being developed for the feedstock replacement. For instance, to produce ethylene, more than 40 ACS process routes were identified. These multiple options make the selection of the promising process route a complex task. By replacing feedstocks, a process can change significantly and the impacts related to these changes in a highly interconnected industrial cluster can create cascading effects due to system interdependencies. This work aims to understand the cascading impacts in carbon flows and prices of implementing an ACS production process in an ethylene cluster. The reliance of the petrochemical industry on fossil-based sources will need to be reduced by the introduction of Alternative carbon sources (ACS). Introducing ACS in a petrochemical cluster will require existing processes to be modified or replaced, potentially affecting other chemical processes within the cluster due to existing material and energy interconnections. Therefore, it is important to understand the current level of interconnections, functioning, and performance of the petrochemical cluster before introducing ACS. In this work, a representative cluster model based on the petrochemical cluster of the Port of Rotterdam was developed and considered as a case study. This model was analyzed using complex network analysis and environmental and technical key performance indicators. In most bacteria, chromosome segregation is driven by the ParABS system where the CTPase protein ParB loads at the parS site to trigger the formation of a large partition complex. Here, we present in vitro studies of the partition complex for Bacillus subtilis ParB, using single-molecule fluorescence microscopy and AFM imaging to show that transient ParB–ParB bridges are essential for forming DNA condensates. Molecular Dynamics simulations confirm that condensation occurs abruptly at a critical concentration of ParB and show that multimerization is a prerequisite for forming the partition complex. Magnetic tweezer force spectroscopy on mutant ParB proteins demonstrates that CTP hydrolysis at the N-terminal domain is essential for DNA condensation. Finally, we show that transcribing RNA polymerases can steadily traverse the ParB–DNA partition complex. Numerical wave models have been developed to reproduce the evolution of waves generated in all directions and over a wide range of wavelengths. The amount of wave energy in the different directions and wavelength is the result of a number of physical processes that are not well understood and that may not be represented in parameterizations. Models have generally been tuned to reproduce dominant wave properties: significant wave height, mean direction, dominant wavelengths. A recent update in wave dissipation parameterizations has shown that it can produce realistic energy levels and directional distribution for shorter waves too. Here, we show that this new formulation of the wave energy sink can reproduce the variability of measured infrasound power below a frequency of 2 Hz, associated with a large energy level of waves propagating perpendicular to the wind, for waves with frequencies up to 1 Hz. The details are sensitive to the balance between the non-linear transfer of energy away from the wind direction, and the influence of dominant and relatively long waves on the dissipation of shorter waves in other directions., Offshore Engineering

Clean energies are being incorporated into the energy mix in numerous countries. Through a spatial survey of maritime trade, restricted military maritime areas, marine planning, and the presence of fauna and flora along the Ligurian Sea, locations for possible investments in wave energy harvesting were identified in the Northern Thyrrenian Sea, along the Ligurian coast. Previous studies in this region have demonstrated, at a lower spatial resolution, the wave energy potential that can be captured and its variation over time. However, the optimization of wave energy exploitation under the criteria of the functionality and safety of converter devices has not yet been evaluated in the Ligurian Sea. The purpose of this study is to identify the optimal wave energy converter from an economic and technical perspective at several selected locations in the Ligurian Sea. The feasibility of gas phase deposition using a Ti alkoxide precursor for precise surface modification of catalysts was demonstrated by modifying a mesoporous alumina support with a Ti oxide overcoat. Titanium tetra-isopropoxide yields a Ti oxide layer that covers homogeneously the alumina surface. Uniformity of the deposited TiO2 was verified by SEM-EDX, on both intra-particle and inter-particle levels. Only a few atomic layer deposition (ALD) cycles were required in order to obtain Ti contents with a relevance for industrial application. The pore size distribution of the overcoated catalyst support was barely affected by the coating process. Synthesized CoMo catalysts based on the Ti-alumina carrier showed up to 40% higher activity compared to a catalyst supported on pristine alumina, in hydroprocessing under industrial testing conditions. The TiO2 coating appeared to be stable, showing no agglomeration characteristics after reaction as corroborated by TEM-EDX. Macroscopic x-ray fluorescence imaging spectroscopy (MA-XRF) and reflectance imaging spectroscopy (RIS) are important tools in the analysis of cultural heritage objects, both for conservation and art historical research purposes. The elemental and molecular distributions provided by MA-XRF and RIS respectively, are particularly useful for the identification and mapping of pigments in easel paintings. While MA-XRF has relatively established data processing methods based on modeling of the underlying physics, RIS data cannot be modeled with sufficient precision and its processing has considerable room for improvements. This work seeks to improve RIS data processing workflows in the short wavelength infrared range (SWIR, 1000–2500 nm) with a novel method that fits Gaussian profiles to pigment-specific absorption features, and we compare its performance to MA-XRF for the task of semi-quantitative pigment mapping, evaluating their limits of detection (LODs) and the matrix effects that affect their signals. Two pigments are considered in this work, lead white and blue verditer, which are mapped in SWIR RIS using the first overtone of -OH stretching of their primary compounds, hydrocerussite (Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2) and azurite (Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2), at 1447 and 1497 nm respectively, and in MA-XRF using the Pb-L and Cu-K fluorescence signals. The methods are evaluated using two sets of custom-prepared paint samples, as well as a 16th-century painting, discussing the identification, mapping, and semi-quantitative analysis of the considered pigments. We found SWIR RIS to be a pigment-specific method with a longer linear range but inferior LODs and penetration depth when compared to MA-XRF, the latter is often not capable of discriminating between different pigments with identical elemental markers. Various approaches have emerged over the last several decades to meet the challenges and complexities of anticipating and responding to the potential impacts of emerging technologies. Although many of the existing approaches share similarities, they each have shortfalls. This paper takes as the object of its study Anticipatory Ethics for Emerging Technologies (ATE) to technology assessment, given that it was formatted to address many of the privations characterising parallel approaches. The ATE approach, also in practice, presents certain areas for retooling, such as how it characterises levels and objects of analysis. This paper results from the work done with the TechEthos Horizon 2020 project in evaluating the ethical, legal, and social impacts of climate engineering, digital extended reality, and neurotechnologies. The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) has recently commissioned the new Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS). The gain in brightness as well as the continuous development of beamline instruments boosts the beamline performances, in particular in terms of accelerated data acquisition. This has motivated the development of new access modes as an alternative to standard proposals for access to beamtime, in particular via the “block allocation group” (BAG) mode. Here, we present the recently implemented “historical materials BAG”: a community proposal giving to 10 European institutes the opportunity for guaranteed beamtime at two X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) beamlines—ID13, for 2D high lateral resolution XRPD mapping, and ID22 for high angular resolution XRPD bulk analyses—with a particular focus on applications to cultural heritage. Robot systems are essentially a new species spreading around us, one that we willingly designed and introduced. Neither a natural species nor a mere human artefact. We have limited information about these smart agents. What do they want, what do you need from us, and how can we find a common ground of understanding to enhance each other through collaboration. Lely took a step into exploring these questions. As a dutch-based company with a diverse portfolio of robot solutions, Lely thrives to bring dairy farming to the future. They cover many tasks assisting farmers and cows in barns worldwide. These increasingly capable entities are no longer tools but partners so we must take the next step into carefully designing our coexistence and collaboration with these robotic systems. After extensive literature on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and research activities with a variety of stakeholders, I developed a Robot Code of Conduct. This code guides developers into designing robotic systems delivering pleasurable, fitting and cohesive interactions. It provides intermediate-level knowledge on robot behavioural design by carrying the reader through three sets of guidelines differing in abstraction and actionability. This project contributes to the field of HRI while spreading awareness of its relevance in practice. The document contains many influential factors that are applied and tailored to designing automated solutions in dairy farming. This document sets a direction and gives concrete guidelines to steer the development of the portfolio towards a vision where all Lely systems work and communicate desirably. Where they communicate as one. I obtained positive results from assessing the content and direction of this document with developers and farmers, however, further tests would be necessary for a more precise validation of this Robot Code of Conduct. This Deliverable, 6.2 Renewable Coarse Resource Assessment for the European Region, aims to offer a preliminary overview of the available wind, wave and solar resources across the European Continent. The coarse assessment aims to analyse and assess the current levels of these renewable resources, analysing and discussing the expected variations per regions. The resource assessment, even at coarse level, can indicate regions for further high resolution analysis, with better suited wind-wave-solar models. The estimated energy densities of wind, wave and solar, are partially the main indicators, we also discuss the impacts of variability, as this is expected to alter the performance of power production, when each resource is utilised by specific technologies. This report also introduces some of the main statistical approaches and ways to estimate the resource potentials. They will be used and expanded upon in forthcoming Deliverables that will also look into power production, via coupling of high fidelity wind-wave-solar models with specific renewable converters. This Deliverable, 6.1 Renewable Correlation of offshore resources, aims to investigate the potential for correlation between parameters of different renewable energies. The analysis is based on a first layer on coarse data, and will allow us to identify which resources have more “connectivity”. The resource assessment, even at coarse level, will indicate regions for further high resolution analysis, with better suited wind-wave-solar models. The correlation analysis is expected to showcase the potential of temporal overlaps by the different resources. The Deliverable examines the overlap of stochastic conditions, the analysis will consider different “time windows” for the base resource, and assess its complementarity with other stochastic renewables. The aim of this deliverable is the estimation of overlap and production of mean maps that indicate to which extend each resource is connected. It is expected that the wind and wave resources will produce higher interest, due to their temporal variability. Condensin, a structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) complex, has been shown to be a molecular motor protein that organizes chromosomes by extruding loops of DNA. In cells, such loop extrusion is challenged by many potential conflicts, for example, the torsional stresses that are generated by other DNA-processing enzymes. It has so far remained unclear how DNA supercoiling affects loop extrusion. Here, we use time-lapse single-molecule imaging to study condensin-driven DNA loop extrusion on supercoiled DNA. We find that condensin binding and DNA looping are stimulated by positively supercoiled DNA, and condensin preferentially binds near the tips of supercoiled plectonemes. Upon loop extrusion, condensin collects nearby plectonemes into a single supercoiled loop that is highly stable. Atomic force microscopy imaging shows that condensin generates supercoils in the presence of ATP. Flow-driven rotary motors such as windmills and water wheels drive functional processes in human society. Although examples of such rotary motors also feature prominently in cell biology, their synthetic construction at the nanoscale has remained challenging. Here we demonstrate flow-driven rotary motion of a self-organized DNA nanostructure that is docked onto a nanopore in a thin solid-state membrane. An elastic DNA bundle self-assembles into a chiral conformation upon phoretic docking onto the solid-state nanopore, and subsequently displays a sustained unidirectional rotary motion of up to 20 rev s−1. The rotors harness energy from a nanoscale water and ion flow that is generated by a static chemical or electrochemical potential gradient in the nanopore, which are established through a salt gradient or applied voltage, respectively. MR fingerprinting (MRF) is a promising method for quantitative characterization of tissues. Often, voxel-wise measurements are made, assuming a single tissue-type per voxel. Alternatively, the Sparsity Promoting Iterative Joint Non-negative least squares Multi-Component MRF method (SPIJN-MRF) facilitates tissue parameter estimation for identified components as well as partial volume segmentations. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of the SPIJN-MRF parameter estimations and partial volume segmentations. This was done (1) through numerical simulations based on the BrainWeb phantoms and (2) using in vivo acquired MRF data from 5 subjects that were scanned on the same week-day for 8 consecutive weeks. The partial volume segmentations of the SPIJN-MRF method were compared to those obtained by two conventional methods: SPM12 and FSL. SPIJN-MRF showed higher accuracy in simulations in comparison to FSL- and SPM12-based segmentations: Fuzzy Tanimoto Coefficients (FTC) comparing these segmentations and Brainweb references were higher than 0.95 for SPIJN-MRF in all the tissues and between 0.6 and 0.7 for SPM12 and FSL in white and gray matter and between 0.5 and 0.6 in CSF. For the in vivo MRF data, the estimated relaxation times were in line with literature and minimal variation was observed. Furthermore, the coefficient of variation (CoV) for estimated tissue volumes with SPIJN-MRF were 10.5% for the myelin water, 6.0% for the white matter, 5.6% for the gray matter, 4.6% for the CSF and 1.1% for the total brain volume. CoVs for CSF and total brain volume measured on the scanned data for SPIJN-MRF were in line with those obtained with SPM12 and FSL. The CoVs for white and gray matter volumes were distinctively higher for SPIJN-MRF than those measured with SPM12 and FSL. In conclusion, the use of SPIJN-MRF provides accurate and precise tissue relaxation parameter estimations taking into account intrinsic partial volume effects. Introduction: To develop and test the feasibility of free-breathing (FB), high-resolution quantitative first-pass perfusion cardiac MR (FPP-CMR) using dual-echo Dixon (FOSTERS; Fat-water separation for mOtion-corrected Spatio-TEmporally accelerated myocardial peRfuSion). Materials and Methods: FOSTERS was performed in FB using a dual-saturation single-bolus acquisition with dual-echo Dixon and a dynamically variable Cartesian k-t undersampling (8-fold) approach, with low-rank and sparsity constrained reconstruction, to achieve high-resolution FPP-CMR images. FOSTERS also included automatic in-plane motion estimation and T (Formula presented.) correction to obtain quantitative myocardial blood flow (MBF) maps. High-resolution (1.6 x 1.6 mm2) FB FOSTERS was evaluated in eleven patients, during rest, against standard-resolution (2.6 x 2.6 mm2) 2-fold SENSE-accelerated breath-hold (BH) FPP-CMR. In addition, MBF was computed for FOSTERS and spatial wavelet-based compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction. Two cardiologists scored the image quality (IQ) of FOSTERS, CS, and standard BH FPP-CMR images using a 4-point scale (1–4, non-diagnostic – fully diagnostic). Results: FOSTERS produced high-quality images without dark-rim and with reduced motion-related artifacts, using an 8x accelerated FB acquisition. FOSTERS and standard BH FPP-CMR exhibited excellent IQ with an average score of 3.5 ± 0.6 and 3.4 ± 0.6 (no statistical difference, p > 0.05), respectively. CS images exhibited severe artifacts and high levels of noise, resulting in an average IQ score of 2.9 ± 0.5. MBF values obtained with FOSTERS presented a lower variance than those obtained with CS. Discussion: FOSTERS enabled high-resolution FB FPP-CMR with MBF quantification. Circular economy has gained traction within companies resulting in many exploring new product and business model combinations. Yet, to transition towards a circular economy on a societal level requires going beyond new product and market-based opportunities. To enable societal level change, ecosystem-level innovations are important and so collaboration plays a key role. Cities are considered in this paper as hubs of innovation playing a key role in transitioning to a circular economy. They are responsible for 80% of global resource consumption, with a high concentration of capital, data and talent spread over a relatively small geographic area; making them an important part of societal level transitions. The current work stresses the need to understand and support collaborations in transitioning towards a circular economy. This paper explores what factors influence collaborations and how organizations collaborate for a circular economy in the context of cities. An initial literature review resulted in a framework for exploration, which informed the set-up of the questionnaire. This helped in conducting semi-structured interviews with people ranging from founders, designers to engineers from six circular start-ups, which operate and utilize the resources in cities; to understand how different organisations collaborate in cities. Results showed they focus on operationalizing their innovation through engagement with various stakeholders. As they increased their visibility in cities showcasing their value, increasing the ways and number of engagements, the organisation engaged with people and organisations having similar values and grew by scaling through engagement. Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems for aviation applications have been considered for their use as APUs or powertrains, as standalone systems or in combination with gas turbines, and both fueled by reformed Jet-A or by hydrogen. Most existing studies focus on powertrain performance modelling. In this work, traditional tube-and-wing regional aircraft sizing methodologies are modified to account for liquid hydrogen fuel and SOFC-GT-Battery hybrid electric powertrains. Methodologies for powertrain modelling, power sizing, energy sizing, weight calculation and system integration have been derived, implemented, verified, validated when possible, and used to assess several study cases. Considering state-of-the-art metal-supported planar ITSOFC technology installed in a 50-seat regional aircraft as test case, it is concluded that current SOFC system power density is not sufficient to achieve MTOW values similar to conventional kerosene-powered regional aircraft. Food side streams contain useful compounds such as proteins, sugars, polyphenols, and amino acids that might get discarded during processing. The concentration of these components may be low (e.g., fruit side streams are mainly composed by water, around 90%, while polyphenol content in rapeseed meal is less than 3% dry weight) and therefore effective separation techniques should be evaluated. The aim of this review is to identify the different process steps (like pretreatment, volume reduction, phase change, solid removal, purification, and formulation) required to recover high-value products from agri-food residues. It reviews different plant-based byproducts as sources (cereal bran, fruit pomace, oilseed meals, fruit wastewater) of valuable compounds and discusses the relevant technologies required for processing (such as extraction, adsorption, crystallization, drying, among others). A structured approach to design recovery processes presented focused on high purity products. This thesis presents novel ways of recovering of valuable compounds from food industry side streams. It does so via evaluating two case studies for the valorization of such streams. These types of streams are often referred to as waste and discarded. However, they are rich sources of nutraceuticals (e.g polyphenols), proteins and dietary fiber. Traveling-Wave Microwave Reactor (TMR) presents a novel heterogeneous catalytic reactor concept based on a coaxial waveguide structure. In the current paper, both modeling and experimental studies of catalyst heating in the TMR are presented. The developed 3D multiphysics model was validated from the electromagnetic and heat transfer points of view. Extrudes of silicon carbide (SiC) were selected as catalyst supports and microwave absorbing media in a packed-bed configuration. The packed-bed temperature evolution was in good agreement with experimental data, with an average deviation of less than 10%. Both experimental and simulation results show that the homogeneous temperature distribution is possible in the TMR system. It is envisioned that the TMR concept may facilitate process scale-up while providing temperature homogeneity beyond the intrinsic restrictions of microwave cavity systems., Complex Fluid Processing

Efficient recovery and utilization of valuable components from industrial food side streams is a main driver towards a circular economy. Among different available purification techniques, adsorption can effectively recover these components. However, the conventional batch mode of operation can limit its applicability in food processes due to limited efficiency. This work compares conventional batch packed bed adsorption with semi-continuous adsorption (so-called CaptureSMB) for the recovery of sinapic acid at industrial scale, using a food grade resin AmberliteTM FPX66. A mathematical mechanistic model able to describe semi-continuous operation is successfully validated and used to identify optimum operating parameters to maximize productivity and resin capacity utilization in batch and semi-continuous operating modes. The results indicate that CaptureSMB outperforms batch operation, increasing productivity from 5.18 g/L/h to 10.3 g/L/h for a given yield (>97%). A resin capacity utilization (RU) of around 70% is observed in both operating modes when productivity is maximized. A 92% RU can be accomplished for a given yield using the CaptureSMB process at a productivity of 7.0 g/L/h, higher than for conventional batch operation. Proteins derived from plant resources such as oilseed meals, canola and sunflower, are considered a viable alternative to animal proteins for food consumption. This work presents a rational methodology, using high throughput experimentation (HTE), for the separation of cruciferin and napin, the two major proteins of canola meal, by chromatography. Eight different mixed mode and ion exchange resins were evaluated at different conditions with the aim of capturing napin and identifying adsorption/desorption behavior, ease of desorption and selectivity. POROS 50 HS resulted as the most promising resin. The obtained equilibrium adsorption data for napin and cruciferin was used in a mechanistic chromatography model and compared with experimental results showing a very good agreement. The model was used to identify column operating parameters that lead to >98% yield and purity for both proteins. Over the past years, a growing number of local initiatives are generating solutions for societal challenges in their cities. However, the scale and complexity of these challenges force urban innovators to constantly adapt and learn, having to acquire new capabilities that will help them advance towards systemic change. In the current work, we take the premise that these urban innovators need to be able to utilise the urban context as a learning ecosystem in order to push their interventions beyond the boundaries of small innovative niches. In keeping with Schön’s reflective practice, we envisage reflection as a core competence for these urban change makers to grow and present a reflective process supporting urban innovators in framing their professional learning journey to succeed in their projects. A series of online sessions have been conducted to investigate how to scaffold a reflective process enabling innovators to better identify challenges in their projects and the corresponding capabilities they need to acquire. In the proposed paper, we present reflective activities as a tool supporting urban innovators in self-defining their learning journeys and elaborate on the insights gained. It can be concluded that the reflective process we developed was valuable to urban innovators in unveiling new learning needs for their projects, while further research is needed to more effectively translate these learnings into actionable steps to sustain innovators’ self-development., Accepted Author Manuscript, Design Conceptualization and Communication

Low-thrust propulsion's main advantage is its efficient propellant usage. This holds for manoeuvres as well as for major orbital changes, both for LEO/MEO/GEO satellites and for interplanetary missions. In designing such missions, extensive numerical models as well as less demanding analytic first-order approximations can be used. A specific kind of the latter category of methods are called shape-based methods. TU Delft's Astrodynamic Toolbox (TUDAT) contains the framework for shape-based methods with spherical shaping and hodographic shaping already implemented for use by students and staff. Having more shape-based method available allows for a more versatile toolbox and combining several shapes with for example coasting would lead to more attractive and efficient transfers. This thesis provides the theory required for the implementation of both exponential sinusoids and the sixth order inverse polynomials with 3D capabilities. These methods have been successfully implemented, verified and validated into the TUDAT shape-based framework. The four shape-based methods have been applied to an Earth-Tempel-1 transfer for start dates from 2020 to 2025 and time of flights of 100 to 8900 days. It is found that the following order can be established with respect to their lowest ΔV, based on both an unoptimised grid search and global optimisation: Inverse polynomial shaping (10.51 km/s), Spherical shaping (11.71 km/s), Exponential shaping (13.09 km/s), Hodographic shaping (26.22 km/s). Optimising for ΔV and peak thrust acceleration with the Earth-Tempel-1 transfer including a coasting arc between two powered arcs for inverse polynomials and spherical shaping compared to the standard transfer, yields the following results: Trajectories with similar and lower ΔVs, similar and lower peak thrust for the same ΔV and similar and longer time of flights. Fungal peroxygenases are deemed emergent biocatalysts for selective C-H bond oxyfunctionalization reactions. In this study, we have engineered a functional and stable self-sufficient chimeric peroxygenase-oxidase fusion. The bifunctional biocatalyst carried a laboratory-evolved version of the fungal peroxygenase fused to an evolved fungal aryl-alcohol oxidase that supplies H2O2 in situ. Enzyme fusion libraries with peptide linkers of different sizes and amino acid compositions were designed, while attached leader sequences favored secretion in yeast. The most promising functional enzyme fusions were characterized biochemically and further tested for the synthesis of dextrorphan, a metabolite of the antitussive drug dextromethorphan. This reaction system was optimized to control the aromatic alcohol transformation rate, and therefore the H2O2 supply, to achieve total turnover numbers of 62,000, the highest value reported for the biocatalytic synthesis of dextrorphan to date. Public management needs to keep pace with contemporary problems and harvest capabilities to meet future scenarios. Consequently, practitioners in the public field must advocate for critical discussions and engage with people who are going to benefit from their guidance. The purpose of the current research is to investigate strategies to strengthen public management by exploring the potential of Design Thinking as a policy competency. A participatory design approach has been selected to co-create a learning environment for building design capabilities. In other words, a safe space that allows for sharing and nurturing knowledge, skills and attitudes. The setup of the participatory process entails a thorough exploration, in which a team of seven public managers of a regional association of municipalities participated. In four participatory sessions, a learning space has been iteratively prototyped, and finally evaluated in the context. Advantages and challenges to the selected approach are discussed to provide guidelines for a practical application and replication of the process within the target domain. The nonplanar shape of a painting as well as practical constraints often result in the painting's surface not being parallel to the plane in that the measurement head of a MA-XRF scanner is being moved. Changing the working distance affects the measurement geometry, so that the sensitivity for the same element may vary throughout the investigated area and induce visible artifacts. These artifacts are especially visible when different scans of the same painting are stitched together. In this article, we present an approach to correct for the variation of the measurement distance. We explored using an intrinsic part of the XRF data set, the Ar signal from the air, to estimate the distance between surface and instrument. The model is developed based on fundamental parameter calculations and a measurement of a NIST 610 standard and is verified on a set of scans of Rembrandt's ‘Portrait of Oopjen Coppit (1611–1689)’., (OLD) MSE-4

In urban planning, a common unit of measure for housing density is the number of households per hectare. However, the actual size of the physical space occupied by a household, i.e., a dwelling, is seldom considered, neither in 2D nor in 3D. This article proposes a methodology to estimate the average size of a dwelling in existing urban areas from available open data, and to use it as one of the design parameters for new urban-development projects. The proposed unit of measure, called “living space”, includes outdoor and indoor spaces. The idea is to quantitatively analyze the city of today to help design the city of tomorrow. First, the “typical”-dwelling size and a series of Key Performance Indicators are computed for all neighborhoods from a semantic 3D city model and other spatial and non-spatial datasets. A limited number of neighborhoods is selected based on their similarities with the envisioned development plan. The size of the living space of the selected neighborhoods is successively used as a design parameter to support the computer-assisted generation of several design proposals. Each proposal can be exported, shared, and visualized online. Automated test case generation tools have been successfully proposed to reduce the amount of human and infrastructure resources required to write and run test cases. However, recent studies demonstrate that the readability of generated tests is very limited due to (i) uninformative identifiers and (ii) lack of proper documentation. Prior studies proposed techniques to improve test readability by either generating natural language summaries or meaningful methods names. While these approaches are shown to improve test readability, they are also affected by two limitations: (1) generated summaries are often perceived as too verbose and redundant by developers, and (2) readable tests require both proper method names but also meaningful identifiers (within-method readability). In this work, we combine template based methods and Deep Learning (DL) approaches to automatically generate test case scenarios (elicited from natural language patterns of test case statements) as well as to train DL models on path-based representations of source code to generate meaningful identifier names. Our approach, called DeepTC-Enhancer, recommends documentation and identifier names with the ultimate goal of enhancing readability of automatically generated test cases. An empirical evaluation with 36 external and internal developers shows that (1) DeepTC-Enhancer outperforms significantly the baseline approach for generating summaries and performs equally with the baseline approach for test case renaming, (2) the transformation proposed by DeepTC-Enhancer results in a significant increase in readability of automatically generated test cases, and (3) there is a significant difference in the feature preferences between external and internal developers., Accepted author manuscript, Software Engineering

Verification and validation of multi-physics codes dedicated to fast-spectrum molten salt reactors (MSR) is a very challenging task. Existing benchmarks are meant for single-physics codes, while experimental data for validation are absent. This is concerning, given the importance numerical simulations have in the development of fast MSR designs. Here, we propose the use of a coupled numerical benchmark specifically designed to assess the physics-coupling capabilities of the aforementioned codes. The benchmark focuses on the specific characteristics of fast MSRs and features a step-by-step approach, where physical phenomena are gradually coupled to easily identify sources of error. We collect and compare the results obtained during the benchmarking campaign of four multi-physics tools developed within the SAMOFAR project. Results show excellent agreement for all the steps of the benchmark. Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) is known for his brilliant blue colours, and his frequent use of the costly natural ultramarine. This paper reveals new findings about ultramarine in the headscarf of Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665, Mauritshuis). The painting was examined using a range of micro- and macroscale techniques as part of the Girl in the Spotlight research project (2018). Analysis of micro-samples mounted as cross-sections using SEM–EDX and FTIR-ATR showed that Vermeer used high-quality ultramarine in the blue headscarf, based on the relative abundance of bright blue particles of lazurite. Analysis with synchrotron sulphur K-edge XANES suggested that the ultramarine pigment was prepared—at least in part—from a heat-treated lapis lazuli rock. The entire painting was imaged using MS-IRR, MA-XRF, RIS, and digital microscopy to reveal the distribution of materials of the headscarf, and to give more insight into Vermeer’s painting process. The shadow part of the headscarf has a remarkably patchy appearance, due to paint degradation that is probably related to the large amounts of chalk Vermeer mixed in the ultramarine paint in this area. The question was raised as to whether extra chalk was added deliberately to the paint to adjust the handling properties or opacity, or whether the chalk was the substrate of a—now faded—yellow lake. Schematic paint reconstructions were made to investigate the effect of the addition of chalk or yellow lake on the paint properties. The analyses and reconstructions led to the hypothesis that the blue headscarf originally contained a wider range of different blue colour shades: an opaque light blue for the left (lit) zone, a slightly brighter opaque blue for the middle zone, and a deep dark blue-green glaze with alternating blue-green glazing brushstrokes for the shadow zone—now largely compromised by paint degradation., (OLD) MSE-4

Rio de Janeiro has become a ’broken city’ (Ventura, 1994): rapid urbanization processes, wealth concentration, market-oriented development, governmental neglect and socio-spatial segregation have been enlarging the societal gap between rich and poor in Brazil. Those processes have shaped the fragmentation of the city, where multidimensional borders and subsequent conflicts construct a divide between the so-called formal and informal city. However, the consequences of this partition mostly affect the groups that low capacity to withstand the pressures of the city. The research intends to design strategies that can increase the permeability of the multidimensional borders of the city, by promoting the integration and increasing the adaptive capacity of the vulnerable groups in Rio de Janeiro. Finally, this research proposes that the co-production of spaces can create places of potentiality, that can enhance social interactions and support the self-development of the local population. Carried out as an open project, an exploratory design, the proposal has been translated to an extensive set of independent, but complementary, socio-ecological strategies that vary according to scale, program and involved stakeholders. Successively, the resulting size of the household was used as a design parameter in a custom-made tool to generate semi-automatically several design proposals for Sloterdijk One. Additionally, each proposal can be exported as a CityGML model and visualised using web-based virtual globes, too. The use of non-invasive macroscopic imaging techniques is becoming more prevalent in the field of cultural heritage, especially to avoid invasive procedures that damage valuable artworks. For this purpose, an X-ray powder diffraction scanner (MA-XRPD) capable of visualising crystalline compounds in a highly specific manner was recently developed. Many inorganic pigments present in paintings fall into this category of materials. In this study, the 17th century oil painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) by Johannes Vermeer was analysed with a combination of transmission and reflection mode MA-XRPD. By employing this scanner in reflection mode, the relative sensitivity for compounds that are present at the paint surface could be increased, establishing it as a highly relevant technique for investigating the degradation processes that are ongoing at paint surfaces. Many of the original pigments employed by Vermeer could be identified, along with four secondary alteration products: gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), anglesite (PbSO4), palmierite (K2Pb(SO4)2) and weddellite (CaC2O4·2H2O). The formation of gypsum was linked to the presence of chalk in the upper glaze layer while the formation of palmierite and weddellite is driven by the presence of lake pigments (and their substrates). In this manner, MA-XRPD can also be used to pinpoint locations relevant for sampling and synchrotron µ-XRPD analysis, which provides information on the microscopic make-up of the paint. A paint cross-section taken from an area rich in palmierite was analysed with synchrotron µ-XRPD, which confirmed the presence of this secondary compound at the interface of the upper paint layer with the ground layer as well as the presence of anglesite in the ground layer. The use of renewable energies has been growing in a considerable way in the world. Until 2017, 18% of European Union’s total installed power generation capacity was wind power capacity. The level of grid penetration of wind turbines has also increased significantly in the Netherlands. This high level of penetration of wind energy affects the behavior of the system during an event (such as a short circuit), which is not the same that with only conventional generation in the system. The level of detail in the dynamic network model of a transmission system becomes of great importance when a big amount of wind energy is connected to the electrical system. In the current dynamic model of the Netherlands transmission system, negative load is used to represent wind turbines, however, this could be no longer sufficient if more wind turbines are connected to the grid. The purpose of this Master Thesis Project is the study and analysis of voltage response of wind turbines models based on the IEC 61400-27-1 standard and the WECCWind Plant DynamicModeling Guidelines, both of them currently implemented in several softwares. This project proposes a modelling methodology for distributed wind turbines, using a single turbine representation and a combined model instead of a negative load directly connected to the grid. PowerFactory and PSSE softwares are used for the modelling of wind turbines, allowing to compare the models based on the IEC standard and the models based on the WECC guidelines respectively. For the simulations performed in these two softwares, parameters suitable for comparing both of them are proposed. Besides, an analysis on the differences between both models is provided. The parameters proposed are used later on for the modelling of distributed wind turbines in the grid. Until the 19th century, lead white was the most important white pigment used in oil paintings. Lead white is typically composed of two crystalline lead carbonates: hydrocerussite [2PbCO3·Pb(OH)2] and cerussite (PbCO3). Depending on the ratio between hydrocerussite and cerussite, lead white can be classified into different subtypes, each with different optical properties. Current methods to investigate and differentiate between lead white subtypes involve invasive sampling on a microscopic scale, introducing problems of paint damage and representativeness. In this study, a 17th century painting GirlwithaPearlEarring(by Johannes Vermeer, c. 1665, collection of the Mauritshuis, NL) was analyzed with a recently developed mobile and noninvasive macroscopic x-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) scanner within the project Girl in the Spotlight.
