- Abstract
We report a measurement of resonance parameters of the orbitally excited (L=1) narrow B(0) mesons in decays to B((*)+)pi(-) using 1.7 fb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The mass and width of the B(2)(*0) state are measured to be m(B(2)(*0))=5740.2(-1.8)(+1.7)(stat)(-0.8)(+0.9)(syst) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(B(2)(*0))=22.7(-3.2)(+3.8)(stat)(-10.2)(+3.2)(syst) MeV/c(2). The mass difference between the B(2)(*0) and B(1)(0) states is measured to be 14.9(-2.5)(+2.2)(stat)(-1.4)(+1.2)(syst) MeV/c(2), resulting in a B(1)(0) mass of 5725.3(-2.2)(+1.6)(stat)(-1.5)(+1.4)(syst) MeV/c(2). This is currently the most precise measurement of the masses of these states and the first measurement of the B(2)(*0) width.

18. Forecasting the airborne spread of Mycosphaerella fijiensis, a cause of black Sigatoka disease on banana: estimations of numbers of perithecia and ascospores

SUMMARY Banana leaves showing different levels of black Sigatoka disease were collected from an unsprayed plantation in Costa Rica during two separate periods representing the wet to dry season transition (October 1993 – February 1994) and the dry to wet season transition (April – September 1995). Laboratory studies were used to investigate the relationship between the release of Mycosphaerella fijiensis ascospores and the amount of inoculum on banana plants showing different levels of infection, as assessed by leaf necrotic area. The number of perithecia present in the necrotic area was used as an indication of potential ascospore loads and was investigated as a series of regression equations. A series of rewetting and incubation regimes was used to investigate spore release under field conditions (21°C and 100% relative humidity in the early morning and 28°C, 60% relative humidity on days when it rained in mid-afternoon). Results suggest that rainfall, combined with a high temperature, may lead to peaks of ascospore release but without necessarily increasing overall numbers released over periods of up to 4 days and that a high level of spore release was less sensitive to changes in temperature once it had been initiated. The exact role of temperature in spore release is still unclear, however, as leaf samples kept at atypically low temperatures also released non-germinating ascospores. An average of 4.5 ascospores was released per perithecium. This does not resolve ambiguities in the literature regarding the number of ascospores present in each perithecium. A linear model relating the average ascospore numbers and necrotic area, using quick estimates of the amounts of necrotic area on the leaves of a random sample of plants across a plantation, is proposed, to give an indication of the relative amount of airborne inoculum potentially available between different plantations.

En pandemia, las audiencias, en la mayoría de los casos, han sido realizadas de manera virtual. Sin embargo, si bien ha habido buenos resultados, no es óbice preguntarse si éstas pueden llevarse a cabo con la misma efectividad que una presencial. En ese sentido, los autores han considerado analizar la legislación comparada y nacional sobre la audiencia de pruebas. Luego, se identifican los problemas de la audiencia de pruebas virtual; específicamente, el análisis se detiene en la psicología del testimonio y cómo su desarrollo puede ser influenciada por la virtualidad. Finalmente, se sugieren propuestas para la mejora del servicio de nuestra administración de justicia.

Objetivo. Determinar la prevalencia de la migrana y sus implicaciones en las actividades laborales y extralaborales/cotidianas de los trabajadores de un hospital regional del altiplano cundiboyacense de Colombia. Pacientes y metodos. Mediante la aplicacion del protocolo neuroepidemiologico de la Organizacion Mundial de la Salud (OMS) se encuesto al personal de planta disponible en dicha institucion; los medicos generales hicieron el filtrado inicial y la determinacion de enfermedad neurologica fue realizada por un neurologo clinico, tanto en los individuos positivos como en los negativos para enfermedad neurologica. La calidad de vida se evaluo por medio de la encuesta MIDAS (migrain disability assessment), en espanol para Latinoamerica, MIDASELA; el analisis se realizo con el programa EPI 6.04. Resultados. Se investigaron 238 personas: 188 mujeres y 50 hombres; la prevalencia de migrana fue de 22,5% (15,5% por el protocolo de la OMS y 7% de falsos negativos), con predominio del genero femenino (OR: 5,49; p< 0,005). En la encuesta MIDASELA, el 47,2% de los pacientes tuvieron una alteracion en su productividad de un 50%, tanto laboral como extralaboral/cotidianamente. Un minimo de pacientes (3,8%) dejaron de hacer actividades laborales debido a la migrana, frente a las extralaborales/cotidianas (29,7%), o las recreativas/familiares (66,4%). El promedio por paciente de ?perdida? laboral, extralaboral/cotidiana y familiar por causa de la migrana fue de 0,3, 2 y 5,2 dias, respectivamente. Conclusion. Podria realizarse un subregistro de la prevalencia de migrana en los sitios donde se ha utilizado el protocolo de la OMS. Esta patologia debera tenerse muy en cuenta en los empleados hospitalarios colombianos por su impacto individual, laboral, familiar, social y economico. Se hacen necesarias politicas y programas de salud dirigidos a la evaluacion, control y tratamiento adecuados de este tipo de patologias, con el fin de mejorar la calidad de vida de aquellos que velan por cuidar y mejorar la del resto de los colombianos.

Silicate materials, dicalcium orthosilicate (Ca2SiO4), calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3), and mini-granulated CaSiO3, were incorporated into three highly weathered, low-Si soils. The mixtures were moistened to field moisture-holding capacity and incubated in plastic bags for 60 days at approximately 25°C, after which Si was extracted. Application rates of silicate materials were 0, 460, 920, and 1380 mg Si per kg soil. Two ranges of particles sizes, 0.25 to 0.84 mm and 0.074 to 0.15 mm CaSiO3and Ca2SiO4were compared. The soils were a Typic Gibbsiorthox, pH 4.6; a Humoxic Tropohumult, pH 4.2; and a Typic Hydrandept, pH 5.0. Materials were evaluated by four extraction procedures: shaking in water, water displacement from saturated soil, shaking in ammonium acetate solution, and biologically by roots of sugarcane (SaccharumSpp. hybrid). Silicate from the CaSiO3materials were generally more readily extracted chemically and biologically than silicate from the Ca2SiO4. Solubility and availability of Si usually increased as primary particle size of the silicate materials decreased. The exceptions were associated with the most acid (pH 4.2) Ultisol. Mini-granulation did not reduce the effectiveness of CaSiO3thus confirming agronomic feasibility of mini-granulation. Plant uptake of Si was most closely related to water-extractable soil Si, followed by Si in saturation extracts and then by NH4OAc-extractable Si.
