Abstract

This paper concerns a new optimization problem arising in the management of a multi-object spectrometer with a configurable slit unit. The field of view of the spectrograph is divided into contiguous and parallel spatial bands, each one associated with two opposite sliding metal bars that can be positioned to observe one astronomical object. Thus several objects can be analyzed simultaneously within a configuration of the bars called a mask. Due to the high demand from astronomers, pointing the spectrograph's field of view to the sky, rotating it, and selecting the objects to conform a mask is a crucial optimization problem for the efficient use of the spectrometer. The paper describes this problem, presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming formulation for the case where the rotation angle is fixed, presents a non-convex formulation for the case where the rotation angle is unfixed, describes a heuristic approach for the general problem, and discusses computational results on real-world and randomly-generated instances., Comment: The dataset is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.17632/cbdth2nprm.1

Abstract

The present study evaluates garlic powder (GP) effects on growth performance, feed utilization, gill parasitic treatment, and monogenean diversity. Thus, a trial was performed under controlled conditions with 84 juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (39.8 ± 8.8 g initial weight), from culture ponds with monogenean parasite presence for 30 days. Four balanced diets in protein (32.5%) and lipids (6.4%) with GP inclusion levels of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% were formulated, manufactured, and supplied daily at approximately 6.5% body weight/tank. The GP diets, compared to the Control (without GP), indicated that the three inclusion levels did not affect the water quality, survival, growth performance, and feed utilization parameters (p > 0.05). No differences were observed in the parasitological index of prevalence (20–25%), mean intensity (9.6–28), and mean abundance (2.7–5.3) among the experimental diets (p > 0.05), evidencing no effect by inclusion level. Efficacy among GP diets indicated a potential decrease in parasite number (13.4–45.6%) but not all monogenean gill parasites. In conclusion, GP diets did not affect the Nile tilapia survival, growth performance, and feed utilization parameters; therefore, its use is suggested as a preventive alternative for monogenean gill parasites. Abstract

BACKGROUND: This study stands for the first Spanish investigation that rigorously evaluates the compliance regarding the use of biological protection gloves as essential personal protective equipment (PPE) in companies with exposure to biological agents in workplaces. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyse the degree of use of biological protection gloves as personal protective equipment (PPE), the factors that influence its use, and the profile of workers exposed to occupational biological agents in Spanish companies in the health sector, farms, meat industry, waste treatment plants, food industry and veterinary centers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study involving 590 Spanish workers from 51 companies. We developed a 34-item questionnaire to assess workers' risk perception related to exposure to biological agents in their workplaces. Among the questions, three were designed to find the degree of use of key protective equipment in sectors with biological agent exposure: protective gloves, goggles or face shields, and respirators. We performed various statistical analyses, including Cronbach's alpha, frequency of endorsement, Content Validity Ratio (CVR) using Lawshe's method, Varimax rotation, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO), and Bartlett's sphericity test, to assess the internal consistency and reliability of the questionnaire. Additionally, we employed a CHAID segmentation analysis, using workers' responses regarding their attitude toward glove usage as PPE for protection against biological risks, with demographic variables as independent factors. RESULTS: The CHAID analysis yielded a segmentation diagram, revealing five distinct groups or profiles of workers based on their use of protective gloves. CONCLUSION: Our study, through CHAID analysis, highlights that workers tend to use protective gloves more frequently when there is an internal Health and Safety department within the company. 34. Modelling and Optimization of Subcritical Water Extraction of Rebaudioside A and Stevioside from Stevia RebaudianaLeaves in Southeastern Mexico

Abstract

The extraction of the sweetening ingredients from Stevia leaves has been performed using conventional techniques, which are not sustainable from an environmental point of view. Lately, some innovative methods known as “green extractions” have been developed, using fluids under subcritical and supercritical conditions. The objective of this work was modelling and optimization of extraction of the sweetening glycosides rebaudioside A and stevioside from leaves of Stevia rebaudianaB. Morita II variety, using water in subcritical conditions as the extraction agent, to maximize yield. The experiment was conducted following a 23factorial design with 5 central points, considering a first-order polynomial model and factors such as temperature (100–150ºC), time (30–90 min), and the Stevia leaf/water ratio (1:10 and 1:20 m/v). The overall yield of extracted glycosides (g dry extract/100 g leaf) and rebaudioside A and stevioside levels were evaluated as response variables. Analysis of variance indicated that the stevia leaf/water ratio factor and the temperature-time interaction presented a significant influence (p< 0.05) on the yield of glycoside extraction, but time didn’t significantly (p< 0.05) affect the overall extraction. The best treatment consisted of pressurized water (300 bar) at 150 ºC temperature for 30 min and a stevia/water ratio of 1:20 m/v. Under these conditions, an overall yield of 57.67% of dry extract was obtained, with yields of 41.41% of rebaudioside A and 6.77% of stevioside. The extracts of S. rebaudianaleaves obtained may serve as a source of sweeteners in the food industry to prepare healthy foods with low caloric density.

Abstract

Transportation problems are essential in commercial logistics and have been widely studied in the litera- ture during the last decades. Many of them consist in designing routes for vehicles to move commodities between locations. This article approaches a pickup-and-delivery single-vehicle routing problem where there is susceptibility to uncertainty in customer requests. The probability distributions of the requests are assumed to be known, and the objective is to design an a priori route with minimum expected length. The problem has already been approached in the literature, but through a heuristic method. This article proposes the first exact approach to the problem. Two mathematical formulations are proposed: one is a compact model (i.e. defined by a polynomial number of variables and constraints); the other one contains an exponential number of inequalities and is solved within a branch-and-cut framework.
