IntroductionThe prevalence of myopia has increased significantly in recent years including an earlier onset of myopia development on the pediatric population. The main objective of the study is to compare CUVAF (Conjunctival Ultraviolet Autofluorescence) in children with and without myopia to validate its usefulness as an outdoor protective biomarker.MethodsA case–control observational study was conducted in a child cohort from subjects that attended to the Ophthalmology Department of Clínica Universidad de Navarra for an ophthalmological examination. The general exclusion criteria were (among others): amblyopia, congenital myopia, general ophthalmic disease, and any conjunctival alteration that might difficult the measurement of the CUVAF area. All participants underwent an automatic objective refraction under cycloplegic effect, biometry to measure axial length (AL) and central corneal radius (CCR), and completed a questionnaire about their lifestyle habits. A total of 4 images of the bulbar conjunctiva were taken with blue light in order to quantify the CUVAF area.ResultsA total of 263 subjects (6 to 17 years old) were analyzed with no significant differences in demographic data between case group and control group. There were 50 non-myopic subjects (19%) and 213 myopic subjects (81%). In relation to the outdoor activities (OA), myopic subjects spent significantly fewer hours per week outdoors than the control-group (p = 0.03). About the CUVAF area, the differences between groups were statistically significant, showing that the myopic group has a significantly smaller CUVAF area than the control-group (0.33 ± 0.72 mm2 vs. 0.78 ± 1.22 mm2; p = 0.0023), likewise, the frequency of CUVAF area absence between both groups showed an odds ratio (OR) of 2.52 (CI95% 1.33–4.74). A Pearson correlation test was done, obtaining a strong significant inverse correlation between myopia degree-CUVAF area (r = 0.1877; IC95% 0.068–0.302), and also ratio (AL/CCR)-CUVAF area (p = 0.002 and p = 0.04) respectively.ConclusionCUVAF is a useful biomarker for OA and it has an inverse relationship with myopia degree also in pediatric age, especially after the age of 12, so it could be useful to differentiate the risk of developing myopia. Having a CUVAF area greater than that corresponding to age, protect to myopia 2.5 times, being almost 5 times the protection in case of high myopia.

Background and AimsMalnutrition increases post-operative risks like infections and prolonged stays. Pediatric assessment challenges require using anthropometric measurements and phase angle, which reflects body cell mass and health outcomes. Phase angle varies by maturation stages, making it crucial for pre-surgical evaluations alongside BMI. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nutritional status, phase angle, and postoperative complications in pediatric patients who underwent surgery.MethodsProspective study with patients aged 3–17 undergoing major non-ambulatory surgery. Anthropometric measurements (weight, height, BMI Z-scores) hand grip strength, dietary intake and body composition via bioimpedance to assess phase angle were recorded. Postoperative complications were monitored, including surgical site infections, morbidity (pneumonia, inotropic support, infections, thromboembolism), and mortality. Surgical risks and pre- and postoperative conditions were documented.ResultsAfter the application of the selection criteria, a total of 391 patients who underwent surgery were included; 60% (n = 235) were within the range of the preschool and school-age groups. During the follow-up period, 51 (13%) patients developed at least one postoperative complication, with surgical site infections being the most common. Moreover, as phase angle decreased, the length of stay (LOS) increased in all the participants. Among children aged ≤12 years old, malnutrition was a risk factor for complications [OR 3.86 (1.61–9.27 95%CI)], whereas among adolescents, phase angle served as a protective factor [OR 0.63 (0.42–0.94 95%CI)].ConclusionSignificant associations were observed between nutritional status, by BMI z-score, and post-surgical complications in younger patients. Additionally, in adolescents, the phase angle emerged as a protective factor against these complications.

A series of seven new meso-phenyl BODIPY-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-one conjugates were synthesized in one experimental step by using a Sc(III)-catalyzed Ugi-Zhu three-component reaction coupled to a cascade sequence (aza Diels-Alder/N-acylation/aromatization) as post-MCR functionalization process. Further experimental studies were performed behind understanding the fluorescence response toward viscosity. All compounds exhibited a linear response between increasing viscosity (DMSO and glycerol mixtures) and fluorescence intensity. The different substituents also influenced the photophysical properties. Furthermore, in DMSO all compounds exhibited dual emission. Each band is attributed to the pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-one and BODIPY moieties, respectively. The electronic structure of all compounds was computed by DFT and TD-DFT calculations, allowing to determine the molecular orbitals involved in the electronic transitions.

Antecedentes: Los avances en la generación de sustitutos para órganos dañados utilizando células mesenquimales como fuente celular y soporte con diferentes materiales proporcionan una alternativa en la cirugía reconstructiva. Objetivo: Comparar la formación de tejido condral hialino a partir de células troncales mesenquimales (CTM) derivadas del tejido adiposo de conejo, en tres diferentes andamios. Material y Métodos: Para los cultivos in vitro se utilizaron andamios de: ácido poliláctico y poliglicólico (PLA-PGA), colágeno tipo I (col I) e hidroxiapatita (HA). Los parámetros utilizados fueron, 1 (adhesión), 7 y 14 (proliferación) días después de la siembra. La diferenciación se evaluó al final del estudio mediante marcadores condrales de matriz extracelular (SOX 9, agrecano y colágeno tipo II). Resultados: El PLA-PGA mostró mayor número de células adheridas (p < 0.001). El col I, mostró mayor proliferación (60.1 ± 6.1 × 103) al día 14 (p < 0.001). Las células condrales mostraron el porcentaje más alto de diferenciación en el PLA-PGA (células (+) agrecano 40.2 [31.5-55.3], colágeno II 23.4 [18.5-44.4]). La generación de cartílago semejante al hialino se observó en los 3 andamios. Conclusiones: El andamio de PLA-PGA in vitro presentó un mayor porcentaje de diferenciación de CTM a tejido condral hialino, 14 días después de la siembra.

In recent decades, there has been increasing interest in studying the variability in soil water properties and, specifically, the spatiotemporal variability in the soil water content. This is motivated by the notable theoretical and applied research interests in soil moisture dynamics and their implications for many natural processes. This study aimed to study whether there are variations in the spatial pattern of the temporal stability of soil moisture over time and to analyze the possible influences of certain hydroclimatic (soil water content, precipitation, and evapotranspiration) and soil factors (texture, bulk density, and organic matter content) on these variations. This study was conducted within the Soil Moisture Measurement Stations Network of the University of Salamanca (REMEDHUS, Spain) under Mediterranean conditions, with daily surface moisture data (0–5 cm depth) obtained from 20 stations for the 2006-2023 period. The results showed differences between the average pattern obtained with the 18-year data series and that obtained with the data series for each year. In more than half of the years studied, the representative station differed from that derived from the average pattern. The mean annual precipitation and summer precipitation characteristics seem to be the main factors influencing the variability in the spatial pattern of the temporal stability of soil moisture.

Olive cultivation is a key agricultural activity in Spain, primarily for producing oil. The extraction process of olive oil from the drupe yields a by-product known as ‘alperujo’, which can be composted and utilized as fertilizer. This research examines the impact of composted ‘alperujo’ on arthropod assemblages in the tree canopy, comparing it to mineral fertilization over the years 2021 and 2022. The study was conducted in two olive groves with different management systems (superintensive and traditional). Two types of sampling methods were used for the canopy: visual survey and sweep net. Under superintensive management, the presence and damage of Eriophyidae (Acari; Trombidiformes) in the shoots was significantly lower in the compost treatment in 2022 (20% of the shoots were occupied/damaged) compared to the mineral treatment (60% of the shoots were occupied/damaged). Araneae abundance was significantly higher (p = 0.033) in the compost treatment compared to the mineral treatment. However, under traditional management, no clear effect on arthropod assemblage was observed. In conclusion, the addition of compost to the superintensive grove helped to limit the presence of some arthropod pests compared to mineral treatment, contributing to a more sustainable crop. Grove type management appeared to play a significant role in the arthropod assemblages and effect of compost addition, but future research utilizing a greater number of groves (replicates) and an extended observation period should be performed to confirm these results.

The mountain region of central Veracruz, Mexico hosts a large system of karst and volcanic caves that are unexplored. In particular, the vertebrates that inhabit these subterranean ecosystems are unknown. This study evaluated the diversity of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish in three environments (euphotic, disphotic, and aphotic) of 16 caves of different geological origin (12 karst caves and 4 volcanic caves) distributed along an altitudinal gradient (300-2400 m a.s.l.). We found a richness of 242 vertebrate species (184 birds, 30 mammals, 15 reptiles, 12 amphibians, and 1 fish) and an abundance of a total of 11,323 individuals (4,969 mammals, 6,483 birds, 36 reptiles, 27 amphibians, and 5 fish). The richness of all vertebrate classes was higher in karst than in volcanic caves. Vertebrate diversity was also higher at mid-altitudes between 600-899 m a.s.l. Diversity varied between environments, where bird and reptile richness was higher in the euphotic environment, while mammal and amphibian diversity was higher in the aphotic environment. The similarity in the composition of vertebrate species does not depend on the distance between karstic and volcanic caves. Volcanic and karst caves shared on average up to 70% and 55% of vertebrate species, which indicates that only 30% and 45% of species, respectively, is different in each cave type. Given the vulnerability and fragility of these subterranean ecosystems, as well as the important diversity that they contain, we recommend including the caves of the central region of Veracruz in the conservation agenda of local governments and communities. Community-based conservation can help ensure the presence of vertebrate species in the caves of this region.

This study analyzes the temporal patterns of rainfed cereal phenology extracted from the GIMMS NDVI3g dataset in the main cereal-growing regions under a Mediterranean climate in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy during the period 1982–2022. The series before and after the beginning of the 21st century were analyzed separately. Phenological parameters were extracted using the modified dynamic threshold method, and their trends were analyzed. Correlation analyses were performed to study the relationships among these parameters and to analyze the influence of hydroclimatic variables on the start (SOS) and end (EOS) of the growing season. Results showed a temporal reversal in phenological trends between both study periods, coinciding with the global warming hiatus. In the first period (1982–2002), SOS and EOS advanced (−7.5 and −3.1 days, respectively), and the length of growing season (LOS) increased. However, during the second stage (2003–2022), SOS and EOS were delayed (7.5 and 1.7 days, respectively), and LOS decreased. Similar dynamics were observed for the influence of the hydroclimatic variables on SOS and EOS, stronger in the first period and weaker in the second. This study provides valuable information on the phenological dynamics of rainfed cereals that may be useful for their management and planning in climate change scenarios.

The new polyheterocyclic compound, 2-benzyl-7-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-morpholino-6-((1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-one, was synthesized by a sequential combination of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde, (1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methanamine, 2-isocyano-1-morpholino-3-phenylpropan-1-one, and maleic anhydride under a microwave-assisted one-pot process [Ugi-Zhu/aza Diels-Alder cycloaddition/N-acylation/decarboxylation/dehydration] with a 28% overall yield. The synthesized compound was fully characterized by 1D (1H, 13C) and 2D (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) NMR, FT-IR, and HRMS.

Primate sanctuaries provide a solution for the increasing number of primates being taken from their home countries to support the demands of the illegal pet trade. To help end the primate trade and raise awareness about the risks this trade poses to delicate ecosystems, sanctuaries are increasingly developing conservation education programs. Education and raising awareness must be one of the primary roles of primate sanctuaries. However, there are few evaluations of the impacts of conservation education programs for school children published in scientific literature. To address this gap, we conducted an evaluation of educator-led visits of school children at Fundació Mona, a primate sanctuary located in Catalunya, Spain. Questionnaires for an experimental and control group were conducted with 3,205 school children, ages 8 to 18 from 83 different schools, to evaluate changes in their attitudes and knowledge of primate welfare and conservation. We found that Fundació Mona’s program of environmental activities had a positive impact on children, both female and male students, in terms of attitudes and knowledge of primate welfare and conservation. Although female students gave better responses regarding welfare and conservation, all children showed gains in pro-conservation responses. This study demonstrates that environmental education activities focused on children can help shape a change in knowledge and attitudes toward primate welfare and conservation. Educator-led visits of school children to primate sanctuaries such as Fundació Mona can also serve to amplify biodiversity conservation messages among children and their families. We encourage primate sanctuaries to promote empirical studies of attitudes and knowledge of primate welfare and conservation and to conduct systematical evaluations to strengthen their educational activities.

In this study, the potential of the metal–organic framework UTSA-16(Zn) as a fluorescence detector for SO2 is explored. The material was synthesized and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and its fluorescence behavior was analyzed before and after SO2 exposure. A significant decrease in fluorescence intensity was observed and a LOD of 1.79 mM (∼114.6 ppm) was obtained. With the help of time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) experiments and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, a static quenching mechanism due to the formation of a non-fluorescent complex in the ground state (GSC) was elucidated. Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of the presence of conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) with the level and progression of myopia and the impact of reduced sunlight exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic confinement (PC). Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out using three cohorts, children (9–17 years old), young adults (18–25 years old), and adults (>40 years old) with myopia (≤0.75D) and at least three annual eye examinations (before and after PC). All participants underwent an automatic objective refraction and CUVAF area analysis. All the participants filled out a questionnaire regarding lifestyle and myopia history. Results: The 298 recruited participants showed that during the PC, children’s and young adults' myopia progression rate increased on average by −0.50 and −0.30 D/year, respectively, compared with the pre-pandemic level (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.01). A significantly greater progression was observed in those with low baseline myopia compared to those with moderate or high myopia (p < 0.01). CUVAF shows its protective effect associated with outdoor activity (OA) with regard to the age of onset of myopia and mean diopters (p < 0.01). In fact, although there were no differences in the increase in diopters between children with and without CUVAF during the PC, those who had CUVAF started with lower gains (−0.3 D/year) compared to those who did not (−0.5 D/year; p < 0.05). The myopia treatments (atropine drops, Ortho-K, and MiSight® contact lenses) showed a reduction effect in myopic progression rate post-PC in comparison with non-treated children (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001 and p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: The strict restriction of OA during PC led to the rate of myopia progression doubling among children and young adults. This progression occurred mainly in children with previously low myopia, and CUVAF, as a biomarker of OA, reflects its potential to provide benefits in the form of recommended behavioral changes to protect against the development of myopia.

Given the growing interest in drought impacts on crops, this work studied the impact of agricultural drought on wheat and barley during the period 2001–2020. The study was carried out in the Spanish regions of Castilla y León and Castilla–La Mancha, with approximate areas of 94,000 km2 and 79,000 km2, respectively, and in the German regions of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen and Bayern, with approximate areas of 34,000 km2, 48,000 km2 and 71,000 km2, respectively. These are the main cereal-growing regions of Spain and Germany. Soil moisture (SM) in the root zone was extracted from the LISFLOOD model database, and SM anomalies were used as the agricultural drought index. Gross primary productivity (GPP) and leaf area index (LAI) variables were obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the month in which SM is most influential on these crop state variables was identified. Crop yields in Spain and Germany were obtained from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the German Federal Statistical Office, respectively. Agricultural drought years and their impact on cereal yields were determined on a regional scale using three approaches based on the critical month with different time periods. These approaches were the use of the critical month and the two (before or after) and the three months (before and after) around the critical month. Two different analyses were used to identify the critical month, depending on the different environmental conditions in each country. These two approaches consisted of a monthly correlation analysis between SM anomalies and cereal yield in Spain and a monthly trend analysis of SM anomalies in Germany. The results showed a dependence of crop variables on SM in spring months in both countries and in summer months in Germany. Differences were found depending on the environmental conditions. A considerable reduction in cereal yields was obtained in Spain which exceeded 30%. Similarly, a worrying sign was observed in Germany, with a positive agricultural drought trend and a yield reduction of almost 5% in cereal crops. In view of future forecasts of the negative impact of climate change on global food production, this study provides valuable information for water and agricultural management under climate change scenarios. Both in regions that are already threatened and in those that until recently were not affected, it is necessary to study adaptation measures to avoid aggravating the impact of agricultural drought on crops, which could improve water productivity and future food security.

An Ugi–Zhu three-component reaction (UZ-3CR) coupled in a one-pot manner to a cascade process (N-acylation/aza Diels–Alder cycloaddition/decarboxylation/dehydration) was performed to synthesize a series of pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-ones in 20% to 92% overall yields using ytterbium triflate as a catalyst, toluene as a solvent, and microwaves as a heat source. The synthesized molecules were evaluated in vitro against breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, finding that compound 1f, at a concentration of 6.25 μM, exhibited a potential cytotoxic effect. Then, to understand the interactions between synthesized compounds and the main proteins related to the cancer cell lines, docking studies were performed on the serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1) and Orexetine type 2 receptor (Ox2R), finding moderate to strong binding energies, which matched accurately with the in vitro results. Additionally, molecular dynamics were performed between proteins related to the studied cell lines and the three best ligands.

Industrial production of olive oil generates large amounts of solid waste called ‘alperujo’. Its compost can fertilize many crops, especially olives. Furthermore, superintensive orchards are increasing their surface globally due to higher production and savings in different costs. Ants are considered an important part of the arthropod community in olive orchards and could even play a significant role in pest control. The tree canopy and ground were sampled to compare the ant assemblage in plots fertilized with compost and mineral products in two groves with different types of crop management (superintensive and traditional) over two years. The numbers of ants in both types of fertilization in each grove were not statistically different (p > 0.05), indicating that the type of fertilization did not have a significant impact on its populations in the ground or in the canopy, but the number of individuals was significantly higher in the superintensive grove than in the traditional grove (both in the ground and in the canopy, p < 0.01). The most frequent species in the ground were Pheidole pallidula, Plagiolepis smitzii and Aphaenogaster senilis (superintensive grove) and Pheidole pallidula, Tetramorium gr semilaeve, Plagiolepis pygmaea, and Tapinoma nigerrimum (traditional grove). In the canopy, the most frequent species were Plagiolepis spp. in both groves. Differences in ant densities and species between the groves could be due to the different management, especially of the soil, but it must be confirmed using more replicas and longer periods of study.

The new polyheterocyclic compound 2-benzyl-3-morpholino-7-(thiophen-2-yl)-6-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-one (1) was synthesized via a one-pot process involving an Ugi-Zhu three-component reaction coupled to a cascade aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition/N-acylation/decarboxylation/dehydration process, using toluene as the solvent, ytterbium (III) triflate as the Lewis acid catalyst, and microwave-dielectric heating to increase the overall yield by up to 73%, while decreasing the reaction time to less than one hour. Product 1 was fully characterized by its physicochemical properties and using spectroscopic techniques (IR, HRMS and NMR).

The new bis-heterocyclic compound ferrocenyl-bis-(1-(4-benzyl-5-morpholinooxazol-2-yl)-N-(4-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl)methanamine) (1) was synthesized in 73% overall yield in 1.5 hours via a pseudo-repetitive Ugi-Zhu five-component reaction, starting from 1,1′-ferrocenedicarboxaldehyde, 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzylamine, and 2-isocyano-1-morpholino-3-phenylpropan-1-one, in 1:2.1:2.2 proportions, respectively, using scandium(III) triflate as a Lewis-acid catalyst, microwaves as a heat source, and toluene as a solvent. The synthesized compound was characterized by 1D (1H, 13C, and 19F) and 2D (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) NMR, HRMS, and FT-IR.
