Transfer RNA (tRNA) contains modified nucleosides essential for modulating protein translation. One of these modifications is queuosine (Q), which affects NAU codons translation rate. For decades, multiple studies have reported a wide variety of species-specific Q-related phenotypes in different eukaryotes, hindering the identification of a general underlying mechanism behind that phenotypic diversity. Here, through bioinformatics analysis of representative eukaryotic genomes we have predicted: i) the genes enriched in NAU codons, whose translation would be affected by tRNA Q-modification (Q-genes); and ii) the specific biological processes of each organism enriched in Q-genes, which generally in eukaryotes would be related to ubiquitination, phosphatidylinositol metabolism, splicing, DNA repair or cell cycle. These bioinformatics results provide evidence to support for the first time in eukaryotes that the wide diversity of phenotypes associated with tRNA Q-modification previously described in various species would directly depend on the control of Q-genes translation, and would allow prediction of unknown Q-dependent processes, such as Akt activation and p53 expression, which we have tested in human cancer cells. Considering the relevance of the Q-related processes, our findings may support further exploration of the role of Q in cancer and other pathologies. This paper describes the clinical case of a patient diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with splenic involvement, focusing on the role of abdominal ultrasound (US) in this context. The patient experienced dyspepsia and progressive asthenia over several months so an abdominal US was performed. The US showed multiple heterogeneous and hypoechogenic focal splenic lesions together with a moderate left pleural effusion. Lymphoma was suspected due to these findings and the diagnosis was then confirmed with the performance of a CT scan and a biopsy that revealed the presence of a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with metastatic disease. Chemotherapy containing rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone was administered and the patient is currently on clinical remission. This study highlights the role of abdominal ultrasound as a useful technique in the non-invasive assessment of this entity, considering an appropriate clinical context and mainly after detecting multiple hypoechogenic splenic lesions in the US.

Aim: To assess the respective performances of a HCV screening program in a hospital setting and a HCV screening model applied concomitantly in a primary care centre., Methods: Adult patients consecutively admitted to hospital for ambulatory surgery were screened for anti-HCV antibodies (hospital screening cohort, HPSC), as were patients receiving blood tests for medical reasons in a primary care centre (primary care screening cohort, PCSC). Serum anti-HCV and HCV RNA levels were tested by ELISA and real-time PCR, respectively., Results: Seroprevalence of HCV infection was 2.2 % in the HPSC and 1.4 % in the PCSC (p = 0.044). Calcium is a major regulator of cellular metabolism. Calcium controls mitochondrial respiration, and calcium signaling is used to meet cellular energetic demands through energy production in the organelle. Although it has been widely assumed that Ca 2+ -actions require its uptake by mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU), alternative pathways modulated by cytosolic Ca 2+ have been recently proposed. Recent findings have indicated a role for cytosolic Ca 2+ signals acting on mitochondrial NADH shuttles in the control of cellular metabolism in neurons using glucose as fuel. It has been demonstrated that AGC1/Aralar, the component of the malate/aspartate shuttle (MAS) regulated by cytosolic Ca 2+ , participates in the maintenance of basal respiration exerted through Ca 2+ -fluxes between ER and mitochondria, whereas mitochondrial Ca 2+ -uptake by MCU does not contribute. Aralar/MAS pathway, activated by small cytosolic Ca 2+ signals, provides in fact substrates, redox equivalents and pyruvate, fueling respiration. Upon activation and increases in workload, neurons upregulate OxPhos, cytosolic pyruvate production and glycolysis, together with glucose uptake, in a Ca 2+ -dependent way, and part of this upregulation is via Ca 2+ signaling. Both MCU and Aralar/MAS contribute to OxPhos upregulation, Aralar/MAS playing a major role, especially at small and submaximal workloads. Ca 2+ activation of Aralar/MAS, by increasing cytosolic NAD + /NADH provides Ca 2+ -dependent increases in glycolysis and cytosolic pyruvate production priming respiration as a feed-forward mechanism in response to workload. The deficiency of CITRIN, the liver mitochondrial aspartate-glutamate carrier (AGC), is the cause of four human clinical phenotypes, neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by CITRIN deficiency (NICCD), silent period, failure to thrive and dyslipidemia caused by CITRIN deficiency (FTTDCD), and citrullinemia type II (CTLN2). Clinical symptoms can be traced back to disruption of the malate-aspartate shuttle due to the lack of citrin. A potential therapy for this condition is the expression of aralar, the AGC present in brain, to replace citrin. To explore this possibility we have first verified that the NADH/NAD + ratio increases in hepatocytes from citrin(-/-) mice, and then found that exogenous aralar expression reversed the increase in NADH/NAD + observed in these cells. Liver mitochondria from citrin (-/-) mice expressing liver specific transgenic aralar had a small (~ 4-6 nmoles x mg prot -1 x min -1 ) but consistent increase in malate aspartate shuttle (MAS) activity over that of citrin(-/-) mice. These results support the functional replacement between AGCs in the liver. To explore the significance of AGC replacement in human therapy we studied the relative levels of citrin and aralar in mouse and human liver through absolute quantification proteomics. We report that mouse liver has relatively high aralar levels (citrin/aralar molar ratio of 7.8), whereas human liver is virtually devoid of aralar (CITRIN/ARALAR ratio of 397). This large difference in endogenous aralar levels partly explains the high residual MAS activity in liver of citrin(-/-) mice and why they fail to recapitulate the human disease, but supports the benefit of increasing aralar expression to improve the redox balance capacity of human liver, as an effective therapy for CITRIN deficiency., Competing Interests: Authors declare no competing interests., (© 2023 The Authors. Calcium is an important second messenger regulating a bioenergetic response to the workloads triggered by neuronal activation. In embryonic mouse cortical neurons using glucose as only fuel, activation by NMDA elicits a strong workload (ATP demand)-dependent on Na + and Ca 2+ entry, and stimulates glucose uptake, glycolysis, pyruvate and lactate production, and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in a Ca 2+ -dependent way. We find that Ca 2+ upregulation of glycolysis, pyruvate levels, and respiration, but not glucose uptake, all depend on Aralar/AGC1/Slc25a12, the mitochondrial aspartate-glutamate carrier, component of the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS). MAS activation increases glycolysis, pyruvate production, and respiration, a process inhibited in the presence of BAPTA-AM, suggesting that the Ca 2+ binding motifs in Aralar may be involved in the activation. Mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) silencing had no effect, indicating that none of these processes required MCU-dependent mitochondrial Ca 2+ uptake. The neuronal respiratory response to carbachol was also dependent on Aralar, but not on MCU. We find that mouse cortical neurons are endowed with a constitutive ER-to-mitochondria Ca 2+ flow maintaining basal cell bioenergetics in which ryanodine receptors, RyR2, rather than InsP 3 R, are responsible for Ca 2+ release, and in which MCU does not participate. The results reveal that, in neurons using glucose, MCU does not participate in OXPHOS regulation under basal or stimulated conditions, while Aralar-MAS appears as the major Ca 2+ -dependent pathway tuning simultaneously glycolysis and OXPHOS to neuronal activation. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Neuronal activation increases cell workload to restore ion gradients altered by activation. Ca 2+ is involved in matching increased workload with ATP production, but the mechanisms are still unknown. We find that glycolysis, pyruvate production, and neuronal respiration are stimulated on neuronal activation in a Ca 2+ -dependent way, independently of effects of Ca 2+ as workload inducer. Mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) does not play a relevant role in Ca 2+ stimulated pyruvate production and oxygen consumption as both are unchanged in MCU silenced neurons. However, Ca 2+ stimulation is blunt in the absence of Aralar, a Ca 2+ -binding mitochondrial carrier component of Malate-Aspartate Shuttle (MAS). Background & Aims: Patients with chronic hepatitis C and stage 3 fibrosis are thought to remain at risk of hepatocellular carcinoma after sustained virological response. We investigated this risk in a large cohort of patients with well-defined stage 3 fibrosis., Methods: We performed a multicentre, ambispective, observational study of chronic hepatitis C patients with sustained virological response after treatment with direct-acting antivirals started between January and December 2015. Baseline stage 3 was defined in a two-step procedure: we selected patients with transient elastography values of 9.5-14.5 kPa and subsequently excluded those with nodular liver surface, splenomegaly, ascites or collaterals on imaging, thrombopenia or esophago-gastric varices. Patients were screened twice-yearly using ultrasound., Results: The final sample comprised 506 patients (median age, 57.4 years; males, 59.9%; diabetes, 17.2%; overweight, 44.1%; genotype 3, 8.9%; HIV coinfection, 18.4%; altered liver values, 15.2%). Median follow-up was 33.7 (22.1-39.1) months. Five hepatocellular carcinomas and 1 cholangiocarcinoma were detected after a median of 29.4 months (95% CI: 26.8-39.3), with an incidence of 0.47/100 patients/year (95% CI: 0.17-1.01). In the multivariate analysis, only males older than 55 years had a significant higher risk (hazard ratio 7.2 [95% CI: 1.2-41.7; P = .029]) with an incidence of 1.1/100 patients/year (95% CI: 0.3-2.8)., Conclusions: In a large, well-defined cohort of patients with baseline hepatitis C stage-3 fibrosis, the incidence of primary liver tumours was low after sustained virological response and far from the threshold for cost-effectiveness of screening, except in males older than 55 years., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons A/S . In addition to its uptake across the Ca 2+ uniporter, intracellular calcium signals can stimulate mitochondrial metabolism activating metabolite exchangers of the inner mitochondrial membrane belonging to the mitochondrial carrier family (SLC25). One of these Ca 2+ -regulated mitochondrial carriers (CaMCs) are the reversible ATP-Mg 2+ /Pi transporters, or SCaMCs, required for maintaining optimal adenine nucleotide (AdN) levels in the mitochondrial matrix representing an alternative transporter to the ADP/ATP translocases (AAC). This CaMC has a distinctive Calmodulin-like (CaM-like) domain fused to the carrier domain that makes its transport activity strictly dependent on cytosolic Ca 2+ signals. Here we investigate about its origin analysing its distribution and features in unicellular eukaryotes. Unexpectedly, we find two types of ATP-Mg 2+ /Pi carriers, the canonical ones and shortened variants lacking the CaM-like domain. Phylogenetic analysis shows that both SCaMC variants have a common origin, unrelated to AACs, suggesting in turn that recurrent losses of the regulatory module have occurred in the different phyla. They are excluding variants that show a more limited distribution and less conservation than AACs. Interestingly, these truncated variants of SCaMC are found almost exclusively in parasitic protists, such as apicomplexans, kinetoplastides or animal-patogenic oomycetes, and in green algae, suggesting that its lost could be related to certain life-styles. In addition, we find an intricate structural diversity in these variants that may be associated with their pathogenicity. A percentage of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients fail direct acting antiviral (DAA)-based treatment regimens, often because of drug resistance-associated substitutions (RAS). The aim of this study was to characterize the resistance profile of a large cohort of patients failing DAA-based treatments, and investigate the relationship between HCV subtype and failure, as an aid to optimizing management of these patients. A new, standardized HCV-RAS testing protocol based on deep sequencing was designed and applied to 220 previously subtyped samples from patients failing DAA treatment, collected in 39 Spanish hospitals. The majority had received DAA-based interferon (IFN) α-free regimens; 79% had failed sofosbuvir-containing therapy. Genomic regions encoding the nonstructural protein (NS) 3, NS5A, and NS5B (DAA target regions) were analyzed using subtype-specific primers. Viral subtype distribution was as follows: genotype (G) 1, 62.7%; G3a, 21.4%; G4d, 12.3%; G2, 1.8%; and mixed infections 1.8%. Overall, 88.6% of patients carried at least 1 RAS, and 19% carried RAS at frequencies below 20% in the mutant spectrum. There were no differences in RAS selection between treatments with and without ribavirin. Regardless of the treatment received, each HCV subtype showed specific types of RAS. Of note, no RAS were detected in the target proteins of 18.6% of patients failing treatment, and 30.4% of patients had RAS in proteins that were not targets of the inhibitors they received. HCV patients failing DAA therapy showed a high diversity of RAS. Ribavirin use did not influence the type or number of RAS at failure. The subtype-specific pattern of RAS emergence underscores the importance of accurate HCV subtyping. The brain uses mainly glucose as fuel with an index of glucose to oxygen utilization close to 6, the maximal index if all glucose was completely oxidized. However, this high oxidative index, contrasts with the metabolic traits of the major cell types in the brain studied in culture, neurons and astrocytes, including the selective use of the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) in neurons and the glycerol-phosphate shuttle in astrocytes. Metabolic interactions among these cell types may partly explain the high oxidative index of the brain. In vivo, neuronal activation results in a decrease in the oxygen glucose index, which has been attributed to a stimulation of glycolysis and lactate production in astrocytes in response to glutamate uptake (astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle, ANLS). Recent findings indicate that this is accompanied with a stimulation of pyruvate formation and astrocyte respiration, indicating that lactate formation is not the only astrocytic response to neuronal activation. ANLS proposes that neurons utilize lactate produced by neighboring astrocytes. Indeed, neurons can use lactate to support an increase in respiration with different workloads, and this depends on the Ca 2+ activation of MAS. However, whether this activation operates in the brain, particularly at high stimulation conditions, remains to be established.

Background & Aims: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma and angiogenesis is closely related to the pathogenesis and progression of different chronic liver diseases (CLD). Thus, the intrahepatic expression of angiopoietins 1 and 2 (Ang1 and Ang2), as relevant mediators of pathological angiogenesis in several CLD, was investigated. In addition, the differential influence of structural and non-structural genomic regions of HCV on the expression of angiopoietins and the possible signalling involved were studied., Methods: Ang1 and Ang2 expression was evaluated by western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in liver homogenates of CHC patients (n=47) and uninfected subjects (n=8). Their association with disease progression (according to METAVIR classification) was assessed by Spearman's correlation. Statistical differences among the expression of angiopoietins at different CHC stages were calculated by Mann-Whitney U-test. Finally, the in vitro expression of Angiopoietins in HCV replicons (complete or non-structural subgenomic) and the main signalling pathways involved were also examined., Results: Ang2 levels were significantly higher in the liver of CHC patients compared to controls and significantly correlated with inflammation and fibrosis. Accordingly, an increased expression of Ang2 was found in all HCV replicons tested. Interestingly, the inhibition of MEK and PI3K signalling pathways exerted differential effects on Ang2 expression concerning to the genomic region of HCV., Conclusions: Hepatitis C virus induces Ang2 expression in hepatocytes through different signalling routes which may lead to the disregulation of vascular homeostasis in the liver. Introduction: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is a major cause of liver disease worldwide which often leads to progressive liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). CHC displays heterogeneous progression depending on a broad set of factors, some of them intrinsic to each individual such as the patient's genetic profile. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of certain genetic variants of crucial interferon alpha and lambda signaling pathways to the hepatic necroinflammatory activity (NIA) grade of CHC patients., Methods: NIA was evaluated in 119 CHC patients by METAVIR scale and classified as low (NIA = 0-2, n = 80) or high grade (NIA = 3, n = 39). In a candidate gene approach, 64 SNPs located in 30 different genes related to interferon pathways (IL-28B, IFNAR1-2, JAK-STAT and OAS1-3, among others) were genotyped using the Illumina GoldenGate® Genotyping Assay. Statistical association was determined by logistic regression and expressed as OR and 95% CI. Those SNPs significantly associated were further adjusted by other covariates., Results: Seven SNPs located in IL-28B (rs12979860), JAK1 (rs11576173 and rs1497056), TYK2 (rs280519), OAS1 (rs2057778), SOCS1 (rs33932899) and RNASEL (rs3738579) genes were significantly related to severe NIA grade (p<0.05). Regarding to clinical variables, elevated NIA was notably associated with aspartate aminotransferase (AST) serum levels >40 IU/L (p<0.05) but not with other clinical factors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis of these factors reflected that AST (>40 IU/L), TYK2 rs280519 (G allele) and RNASEL rs3738579 (G allele) were factors independently associated with elevated NIA (p<0.05). AST concentration showed a moderate AUC value (AUC = 0.63), similar to TYK2 (rs280519) and RNASEL (rs3738579) SNPs (AUC = 0.61, both) in the ROC&#95;AUC analysis. Interestingly, the model including all significant variables reached a considerable predictive value (AUC = 0.74)., Conclusion: The identified genetic variants in interferon signaling pathways may constitute useful prognostic markers of CHC progression. Further validation in larger cohorts of patients is needed.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of peripheral blood concentrations of angiopoietins (Ang) as cirrhosis biomarkers of chronic hepatitis C (CHC)., Methods: Ang1 and Ang2 serum levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in samples from 179 cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic CHC patients, classified according to the METAVIR system. Groups were compared by non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test. Subsequently, the association of peripheral concentrations of angiopoietins with the stage of fibrosis was analyzed using Spearman correlation test. Finally, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of circulating angiopoietins for cirrhosis diagnosis were determined by the study of the respective area under the curve of receiver operator characteristics (AUC-ROC)., Results: Peripheral blood concentrations of Ang1 and Ang2 in CHC patients were significantly related to fibrosis. While Ang1 was decreased in cirrhotic subjects compared to non-cirrhotic ( P < 0.0001), Ang2 was significantly increased as CHC progressed to the end stage of liver disease ( P < 0.0001). Consequently, Ang2/Ang1 ratio was notably amplified and significantly correlated with fibrosis ( P < 0.0001). Interestingly, the individual performance of each angiopoietin for the diagnosis of cirrhosis reached notable AUC-ROC values (above 0.7, both), but the Ang2/Ang1 ratio was much better (AUC-ROC = 0.810) and displayed outstanding values of sensitivity (71%), specificity (84%) and accuracy (82.1%) at the optimal cut-off (10.33). Furthermore, Ang2/Ang1 ratio improved the performance of many other previously described biomarkers or scores of liver cirrhosis in CHC., Conclusion: Ang2/Ang1 ratio might constitute a useful tool for monitoring the progression of chronic liver disease towards cirrhosis and play an important role as therapeutic target., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare.

Background: Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE), having demonstrated survival benefits, is the treatmentof choice in intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma, although there is great heterogeneity in its clinical application., Material and Methods: A survey was sent to the Madrid Regional hospitals to assess applicability, indications and treatment protocols. The assessment was made overall and according to the type of hospital (groups A vs. B and C)., Results: Seventeen out of 22 hospitals responded (8/8 group A, 9/ 14 group B-C). All do/indicate transarterial chemoembolisation, 13/17 at their own facilities. Eight of the 17 hospitals have multidisciplinary groups (5/8 A, 3/9 B-C). Nine hospitals perform > 20 procedures/year (7 group A), and 6 from group B-C request/perform < 10/year. It is performed on an "on-demand" basis in 12/17. In 5 hospitals, all the procedures use drug-eluting beads loaded with doxorubicin. The average number of procedures per patient is 2. The mean time from diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma to transarterial chemoembolisation is ≤ 2 months in 16 hospitals. In 11/17 hospitals, response is assessed by computed tomography. Radiological response is measured without specific criteria in 12/17 and the other five hospitals (4 group A) assessed using standardised criteria., Conclusion: Uniformity among the Madrid Regional hospitals was found in the indication and treatment regimen. The use of DEB-TACE has become the preferred form of TACE in clinical practice. The differentiating factors for the more specialised hospitals are a larger volume of procedures, decision-making by multidisciplinary committees and assessment of radiological response more likely to be standardised.

Aims: Accurate liver fibrosis staging is crucial for the management of chronic hepatitis C (CHC). The invasiveness and cost burden of liver biopsy have driven the search for new noninvasive biomarkers of fibrosis. Based on the link between serum angiopoietin-1 and 2 levels and CHC progression, we aimed to determine the value of these angiogenic factors as noninvasive biomarkers of liver fibrosis., Methods: Serum levels of angiopoietin-1 and -2 were measured by ELISA in 108 CHC patients who underwent pretreatment liver biopsy. The correlation between angiopoietins and clinical and demographic variables with liver fibrosis was analyzed by univariate regression. Significant factors were then subjected to multivariate analysis, from which we constructed a novel noninvasive liver fibrosis index (AngioScore), whose performance was validated in an independent series of 71 CHC patients. The accuracy of this model was compared with other documented fibrosis algorithms by De Long test., Results: Angiopoietins correlated significantly with hepatic fibrosis; however, only angiopoietin-2 was retained in the final model, which also included age, platelets, AST, INR, and GGT. The model was validated and behaved considerably better than other fibrosis indices in discriminating all, significant, moderate and severe liver fibrosis (0.886, 0.920, 0.923). Using clinically relevant cutoffs, we classified CHC patients by discarding significant fibrosis and diagnosing moderate and severe fibrosis with greater accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity., Conclusions: Our novel noninvasive liver fibrosis model, based on serum angiopoietin-2 levels, outperforms other indices and should help substantially in managing CHC and monitoring long-term follow-up prognosis.

Aim: To assess the clinical, biochemical and virological long-term outcome in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with a sustained virological response (SVR) after peginterferon (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin combination therapy., Methods: One hundred and fifty three patients with a SVR after treatment with PEG-IFN plus ribavirin were included in a 5-year follow-up study in a single Spanish center, based on standard clinical practice. Clinical anamnesis, biochemical analysis, hepatitis C virus RNA and alpha-fetoprotein measurement, ultrasonography and transient elastography were performed annually., Results: The mean follow-up period of the 153 patients was 76 ± 13 mo after they obtained a SVR. Five patients (3.26%) presented with cirrhosis before treatment and 116 (75.8%) had genotype 1. No patient showed evidence of hepatic decompensation. One patient (0.65%) developed a hepatocellular carcinoma at month 30 after achieving SVR. There were no virological relapses during this follow-up period. Persistently elevated alanine aminotransferase was found in only one patient (0.65%). At the end of the 5-year follow-up, the mean value of transient elastography was 7 ± 4.3 kPa (F1). There were no deaths and no other tumors., Conclusion: The long-term outcome of 153 CHC patients with SVR to PEG-IFN plus ribavirin was good. No evidence of a virological relapse was seen. One patient (0.65%) developed a hepatocellular carcinoma.

However, due to lack of contrast agents, ultrasonography is less sensitive and specific compared with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Infection by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major public health problem, with more than 170 million people infected throughout the world. The infection prevalence, with small regional differences, is estimated in 1-3% of the global population. HCV is the most frequent cause of chronic liver disease and 20-30% of patients develop cirrhosis with a risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Nowadays, pegylated interferon-a (PEG-IFN) in combination with ribavirin, a nucleoside analogue, is the current treatment for chronic hepatitis C (CHC), with less adverse effects and better compliance. Dosage and duration depend on some factors as weight, genotype, viral load and a rapid virological response presented by the patient. One of the most relevant aspects in the treatment of CHC is how to manage the group of non-responder or relapser patients to previous treatments. As such, a substantial proportion of patients had already been unsuccessfully treated with interferon-based therapies and these patients claim for an optimal therapeutic option. The future treatment of CHC walk along through the association of two or three drugs, including nucleoside/nucleotide analogues, higher PEG-IFN initial dosages (induction) or longer treatments duration, or combination of helicase and protease inhibitors.

Consequently, the profitability of an endoscopy unit cannot be evaluated., Objectives: 1: To classify endoscopies according to the time taken to accomplish them in order to estimate the CI and determine the relative value unit (RVU). 2: To evaluate the cost of each examination in order to determine the profitability of endoscopy as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. 3: To measure unnecessary delays in examinations and to determine whether there are differences in the time an examination takes according to the endoscopist's experience and the patient's age or sex., Material and Methods: The cost per hour of an endoscopy room was estimated by dividing the cost per year of employees, equipment, maintenance and the hospital's general costs between the hours of work per year of the endoscopy team. The time taken to perform endoscopies was estimated and the result was used to calculate the RVI, the CI and the cost of 500 consecutive endoscopies., Results: The annual cost amounted to 349,617.69 E. Staffing costs represented 65.5%, of which 56.3% were direct costs. Gastroscopy was taken as the RVU (cost = 27.52 E).
