The detailed feeding and feedback mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are not yet well known. For low-luminosity and obscured AGN, as well as late-type galaxies, determining the central black hole (BH) masses is challenging. Our goal with the GATOS sample is to study circum-nuclear regions and better estimate BH masses with more precision than scaling relations offer. Using ALMA's high spatial resolution, we resolve CO(3-2) emissions within ~100 pc around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in seven GATOS galaxies to estimate their BH masses when sufficient gas is present. We study seven bright ($L_{AGN}(14-150\mathrm{keV}) \geq 10^{42}\mathrm{erg/s}$), nearby (<28 Mpc) galaxies from the GATOS core sample. For comparison, we searched the literature for previous BH mass estimates and made additional calculations using the \mbh~ - $\sigma$ relation and the fundamental plane of BH activity. We developed a supervised machine learning method to estimate BH masses from position-velocity diagrams or first-moment maps using ALMA CO(3-2) observations. Numerical simulations with a wide range of parameters created the training, validation, and test sets. Seven galaxies provided enough gas for BH mass estimations: NGC4388, NGC5506, NGC5643, NGC6300, NGC7314, NGC7465, and NGC~7582. Our BH masses, ranging from 6.39 to 7.18 log$(M_{BH}/M_\odot)$, align with previous estimates. Additionally, our machine learning method provides robust error estimations with confidence intervals and offers greater potential than scaling relations. This work is a first step toward an automated \mbh estimation method using machine learning.

Understanding the processes that drive the morphology and kinematics of molecular gas in galaxies is crucial for comprehending star formation and, ultimately, galaxy evolution. Using data obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we study the behavior of the warm molecular gas at temperatures of hundreds of Kelvin and the cold molecular gas at tens of Kelvin in the galaxy MCG$-$05$-$23$-$16, which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of this spheroidal galaxy, classified in the optical as S0, show a dust lane resembling a nuclear spiral and a surrounding ring. These features are also detected in CO(2$-$1) and H2, and their morphologies and kinematics are consistent with rotation plus local inward gas motions along the kinematic minor axis in the presence of a nuclear bar. The H2 transitions 0-0 S(3), 0-0 S(4), and 0-0 S(5), which trace warmer and more excited gas, show more disrupted kinematics than 0-0 S(1) and 0-0 S(2), including clumps of high-velocity dispersion (of up to $\sim$ 160 km/s), in regions devoid of CO(2$-$1). The kinematics of one of these clumps, located at $\sim$ 350 pc westward from the nucleus, are consistent with outflowing gas, possibly driven by localized star formation traced by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 11.3 ${\mu}$m. Overall, we observe a stratification of the molecular gas, with the colder gas located in the nuclear spiral, ring, and connecting arms, while most warmer gas with higher velocity-dispersion fills the inter-arm space. The compact jet, approximately 200 pc in size, detected with Very Large Array (VLA) observations, does not appear to significantly affect the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas, possibly due to its limited intersection with the molecular gas disc., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 2. We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS observations of the infrared PAH bands in the nuclear and circumnuclear regions of local AGN from the GATOS Survey. In this work, we examine the PAH properties in the circumnuclear regions of AGN and AGN-outflows, and compare them to those in star-forming regions and the innermost regions of AGN. This study employs 4.9-28.1 micron sub-arcsecond angular resolution data to investigate the properties of PAH in three nearby sources (DL~30-40 Mpc). Our findings align with previous JWST studies, showing that the central regions of AGN show a larger fraction of neutral PAH molecules (i.e. elevated 11.3/6.2 and 11.3/7.7 PAH ratios) compared to star-forming galaxies. We find that the AGN might affect not only the PAH population in the innermost region but also in the extended regions up to ~kpc scales. By comparing our observations to PAH diagnostic diagrams, we find that, in general, regions located in the projected direction of the AGN-outflow occupy similar positions on the PAH diagnostic diagrams as those of the innermost regions of AGN. Star-forming regions that are not affected by the AGN in these galaxies share the same part of the diagram as Star-forming galaxies. We examine the potential of the PAH-H2 diagram to disentangle AGN versus star-forming activity. Our results suggest that in Sy-like AGN, illumination and feedback from the AGN might affect the PAH population at nuclear and kpc scales, in particular, the ionization state of the PAH grains. However, PAH sizes are rather similar. The carriers of the ionized PAH bands (6.2 and 7.7 micron) are less resilience than those of neutral PAH bands (11.3 micron), which might be particularly important for strongly AGN-host coupled systems. We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. We use a sample of 64 nearby (D=7-45 Mpc) disk galaxies including 45 AGN and 19 non-AGN, that have high spatial resolution multiline CO observations obtained with the ALMA and/or PdBI arrays to study the distribution of cold molecular gas in their circumunuclear disks (CND). We analyze whether the concentration of cold molecular gas changes as a function of the X-ray luminosity in the 2-10 keV range ($L_{\rm X}$). We also study the concentration of the hot molecular gas using NIR data obtained for the H2 1-0S(1) line. We find a turnover in the distribution of the cold molecular gas concentration as a function of $L_{\rm X}$ with a breakpoint which divides the sample into two branches: the AGN build-up branch ($L_{\rm X}\leq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) and the AGN feedback branch ($L_{\rm X}\geq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) . Lower luminosity AGN and non-AGN of the AGN build-up branch show high cold molecular gas concentrations and centrally peaked radial profiles on nuclear ($r\leq50$~pc) scales. Higher luminosity AGN of the AGN feedback branch, show a sharp decrease in the concentration of molecular gas and flat or inverted radial profiles. The cold molecular gas concentration index ($CCI$), defined as the ratio of surface densities at $r\leq50$~pc and $r\leq200$~pc , namely $CCI \equiv$~log$_{\rm 10}(\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 50}/\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 200}$), spans a factor ~4-5 between the galaxies lying at the high end of the AGN build-up branch and the galaxies of the AGN feedback branch. The concentration and radial distributions of the hot molecular gas in our sample follow less extreme trends as a function of the X-ray luminosity. The usual approach to classify the ionizing source using optical spectroscopy is based on the use of diagnostic diagrams that compares the relative strength of pairs of collisitional metallic lines (e.g., [O iii] and [N ii]) with respect to recombination hydrogen lines (e.g., H{\beta} and H{\alpha}). Despite of being accepted as the standard procedure, it present known problems, including confusion regimes and/or limitations related to the required signal-to-noise of the involved emission lines. These problems affect not only our intrinsic understanding of inter-stellar medium and its poroperties, but also fundamental galaxy properties, such as the star-formation rate and the oxygen abundance, and key questions just as the fraction of active galactic nuclei, among several others. We explore the existing alternatives in the literature to minimize the confusion among different ionizing sources and proposed a new simple diagram that uses the equivalent width and the velocity dispersion from one single emission line, H{\alpha}, to classify the ionizing sources. We use aperture limited and spatial resolved spectroscopic data in the nearby Universe (z{\sim}0.01) to demonstrate that the new diagram, that we called WHaD, segregates the different ionizing sources in a more efficient way that previously adopted procedures. A new set of regions are defined in this diagram to select betweeen different ionizing sources. We present MEGARA (Multi-Espectr\'ografo en GTC de Alta Resoluci\'on para Astronom\'ia) Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of 5 local type-2 quasars (QSO2s, z $\sim 0.1$) from the Quasar Feedback (QSOFEED) sample. These active galactic nuclei (AGN) have bolometric luminosities of 10$^{45.5-46}$ erg/s and stellar masses of $\sim$10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$. We explore the kinematics of the ionized gas through the [O~III]$\lambda$5007 $\r{A}$ emission line. The nuclear spectra of the 5 QSO2s, extracted in a circular aperture of $\sim$ 1.2" ($\sim$ 2.2 kpc) in diameter, show signatures of high velocity winds in the form of broad (full width at half maximum; 1300$\leq$FWHM$\leq$2240 km/s and blueshifted components. We find that 4 out of the 5 QSO2s present outflows that we can resolve with our seeing-limited data, and they have radii ranging from 3.1 to 12.6 kpc. In the case of the two QSO2s with extended radio emission, we find that it is well-aligned with the outflows, suggesting that low-power jets might be compressing and accelerating the ionized gas in these radio-quiet QSO2s. In the four QSO2s with spatially resolved outflows, we measure ionized mass outflow rates of 3.3-6.5 Msun/yr when we use [S~II]-based densities, and of 0.7-1.6 Msun/yr when trans-auroral line-based densities are considered instead. We compare them with the corresponding molecular mass outflow rates (8 - 16 Msun/yr), derived from CO(2-1) ALMA observations at 0.2" resolution. Both phases show lower outflow mass rates than those expected from observational scaling relations where uniform assumptions on the outflow properties were adopted. This might be indicating that the AGN luminosity is not the only driver of massive outflows and/or that these relations need to be re-scaled using accurate outflow properties. We use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of a sample of six local obscured type 1.9/2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) to compare their nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with the level of nuclear obscuration traced by X-rays. This study is the first to use sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local obscured AGN to investigate the nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 $\mu$m). All the nuclei show the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate band in absorption. We compare the strength of the 9.7 and 18 $\mu$m silicate features with torus model predictions. The observed silicate features are generally well explained by clumpy and smooth torus models. We report the detection of the 6 $\mu$m dirty water ice band (i.e., a mix of water and other molecules such as CO and CO$_2$) at sub-arcsecond scales ($\sim$0.26 arcsec at 6 $\mu$m; inner $\sim$50 pc) in a sample of local AGN with different levels of nuclear obscuration in the range log N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim22-25$. We find a good correlation between the 6 $\mu$m water ice optical depths and N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$. This result indicates that the water ice absorption might be a reliable tracer of the nuclear intrinsic obscuration in AGN. The weak water ice absorption in less obscured AGN (log N$_H^{X-ray}$ (cm$^{-2}$)$\lesssim$23.0 cm$^{-2}$) might be related to the hotter dust temperature ($>$T$_{sub}^{H_2O}\sim$110 K) expected to be reached in the outer layers of the torus due to their more inhomogeneous medium. Our results suggest it might be necessary to include the molecular content, such as, H$_2$O, aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH-) and more complex PAH molecules in torus models to better constrain key parameters such as the torus covering factor (i.e. nuclear obscuration)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 12 Figures

We present a polarization variability analysis of a sample of 26 $\gamma$-ray blazars monitored by the Steward Observatory between 2008 and 2018 in the optical band. We investigate the properties and long-term variability of their optical polarization, searching for differences between blazar types. We observe that BL Lac objects are typically less polarized and less variable than flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Moreover, BL Lacs display a distribution of their polarization angle typically oriented in a preferential direction, contrary to the rather random distribution of FSRQs. For the latter blazar type, as well as those sources showing a bright stellar emission, we take into account the depolarizing effect introduced by the broad line region and the host galaxy on the measured polarization degree. In this sample we also observe that BL Lacs present an uncorrelated evolution of the flux and the polarization. Contrary, FSRQs show a correlation before the depolarization correction, that is lost however after considering this effect. In addition, we study the behaviour of the polarization angle, searching for angle rotations in its long-term evolution. We derive that the FSRQs studied here show rotations more frequently than BL Lac objects by a factor $\sim$1.5. During these periods we also observe a systematic decrease of the polarization fraction, as well as a marginal flux increase, not significant however to connect rotations with optical flares. We interpret these results within the extended shock-in-jet scenario, able to explain the overall features observed here for the polarization of the blazar sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the analysis of archival XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of CH Cyg, one of the most studied symbiotic stars (SySts). The combination of the high-resolution XMM-Newton RGS and Chandra HETG X-ray spectra allowed us to obtain reliable estimates of the chemical abundances and to corroborate the presence of multi-temperature X-ray-emitting gas. Spectral fitting of the medium-resolution XMM-Newton MOS (MOS1+MOS2) spectrum required the use of an additional component not seen in previous studies in order to fit the 2.0-4.0 keV energy range. Detailed spectral modelling of the XMM-Newton MOS data suggests the presence of a reflection component, very similar to that found in active galactic nuclei. The reflection component is very likely produced by an ionised disk (the accretion disk around the white dwarf) and naturally explains the presence of the fluorescent Fe emission line at 6.4 keV while also contributing to the soft and medium energy ranges. The variability of the global X-ray properties of CH Cyg are discussed as well as the variation of the three Fe lines around the 6-7 keV energy range. Mrk 477 is the closest type-2 quasar (QSO2), at a distance of 163 Mpc. This makes it an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay between nuclear activity and star formation with a great level of detail and signal-to-noise. In this Letter we present new mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopic data with an angular resolution of 0.4 arcsec (~300 pc) obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) instrument CanariCam. The N-band (8-13 micron) spectrum of the central ~400 pc of the galaxy reveals [S IV]10.51 micron emission, but no 8.6 or 11.3 micron PAH features, which are commonly used as tracers of recent star formation. This is in stark contrast with the presence of a nuclear starburst of ~300 pc in size, an age of 6 Myr, and a mass of 1.1x10^8 Msun, as constrained from ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope observations. Considering this, we argue that even the more resilient, neutral molecules that mainly produce the 11.3 micron PAH band are most likely being destroyed in the vicinity of the active nucleus despite the relatively large X-ray column density, of log N_H=23.5 cm^-2, and modest X-ray luminosity, of 1.5x10^43 erg/s. This highlights the importance of being cautious when using PAH features as star formation tracers in the central region of galaxies to evaluate the impact of feedback from active galactic nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. An interesting feature in active galactic nuclei (AGN) accreting at low rate is the weakness of the reflection features in their X-ray spectra, which can result from the gradual disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. It has been suggested that low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) would have a different reflector configuration compared with high luminosity AGN, either covering a smaller fraction of the sky or simply having less material. Additionally, we note that the determination of the spectral index ($\Gamma$) and the cut-off energy of the primary power-law emission is affected by the inclusion of reflection models, showing the importance of using them to study the accretion mechanism, especially in the case of the LLAGN that have previously shown a high dispersion on the relation between $\Gamma$ and the accretion rate. Our purpose is to constrain the geometry and column density of the reflector in a sample of LLAGN covering a broad X-ray range of energy combining data from XMM-Newton + NuSTAR + Swift of a hard X-ray-flux limited sample of 17 LLAGN from BASS/DR2 with accretion rates $\lambda_{Edd}$=L$_{\rm Bol}$/L$_{\rm Edd}$<10$^{-3}$. We fit all spectra using the reflection model for torus (borus02) and accretion disk (Xillver) reflectors. We found a tentative correlation between the torus column density and the accretion rate, LLAGN shows a lower column density compared with the high-luminosity objects. We also confirm the relation between $\Gamma$ and $\lambda_{Edd}$, with a smaller scatter than previously reported, thanks to the inclusion of high-energy data and the reflection models. Our results are consistent with a break at $\lambda_{Edd}\sim10^{-3}$, suggestive of a different accretion mechanism compared with higher accretion AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a statistical analysis of the properties of the obscuring material around active galactic nuclei (AGN). This study represents the first of its kind for an ultra-hard X-ray (14-195keV; Swift/BAT) volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc) sample of 24 Seyfert (Sy) galaxies (BCS40 sample) using high angular resolution infrared data and various torus models: smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus models and clumpy disc+wind models. We find that the smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus models (i.e. without including the polar dusty wind component) and disc+wind models provide best fits for a comparable number of galaxies, 8/24 (33.3%) and 9/24 (37.5%), respectively. We find that the best-fitted models depend on the hydrogen column density (NH), which is related to the X-ray (unobscured/obscured) and/or optical (Sy1/Sy2) classification. In particular, smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus models best reproduce the infrared (IR) emission of AGN with relatively high hydrogen column density (median value of log (NH)=23.5+-0.8; i.e. Sy2). However, clumpy disc+wind models provide the best fits to the nuclear IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Sy1/1.8/1.9 (median value of log (NH)=21.0+-1.0), specifically in the near-IR (NIR) range. The success of the disc+wind models in fitting the NIR emission of Sy1 galaxies is due to the combination of adding large graphite grains to the dust composition and self-obscuration effects caused by the wind at intermediate inclinations. In general, we find that the Seyfert galaxies having unfavourable (favourable) conditions, i.e. nuclear hydrogen column density and Eddington ratio, for launching IR dusty polar outflows are best-fitted with smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus (disk+wind) models confirming the predictions from simulations. We have studied the nuclear region of the previously detected dual AGN system in the galaxy pair IRAS 05589+2828 and 2MASX J06021107+2828382 through new optical spectroscopy observations, along with radio and X-ray archival data. Our multiwavelength data strongly suggest that the Sy1 \iras\, (z=0.0330$\pm$0.0002) conforms to a dual AGN system with the Sy2 \twomas\, (z=0.0334$\pm$0.0001) with a projected separation obtained from the radio data of 20.08\arcsec\, ($\sim$13.3\,kpc). Analysis of the optical spectra reveals a faint narrow extended emission from H$\alpha$ and [OIII] amidst the two AGN, supporting evidence for an ongoing merger. \iras\, is a double component narrow emission line AGN, with complex broad Balmer emission line profiles that clearly show a strong red-peaklet with a velocity shift of $\sim$3500\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The black hole mass estimates of \iras\, and \twomas\, are log\,M$\rm_{BH}$\,=\,8.59\,$\pm$\,0.14 (M$_\odot$) and log\,M$\rm_{BH}$\,=\,8.21$\pm$0.2 (M$_\odot$), respectively. In the X-ray bands, \iras\, is compatible with a Type 1 object, showing both spectral and flux variability. \chandra\, data of 2MASX\,J06021107+2828382 allowed us to measure a high hardness ratio in this source, providing evidence for a Type 2 AGN. The 22 GHz image obtained with the {\it Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array} has revealed that both AGN are compact radio objects with spectral indices -0.26$\pm$0.03 and -0.70$\pm$0.11, confirming for the first time its dual AGN nature in the radio bands., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 20 pages, 15 figures

Blazars optical emission is generally dominated by relativistic jets, although the host galaxy, accretion disk and broad line region (BLR) may also contribute significantly. Disentangling their contributions has been challenging for years due to the dominance of the jet. To quantify the contributions to the spectral variability, we use the statistical technique for dimensionality reduction Non-Negative Matrix Factorization on a spectroscopic data set of 26 $\gamma$-ray blazars. This technique allows to model large numbers of spectra in terms of a reduced number of components.We use a priori knowledge to obtain components associated to meaningful physical processes. The sources are classified according to their optical spectrum as host-galaxy dominated BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), BL Lacs, or Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). Host-galaxy sources show less variability, as expected, and bluer-when-brighter trends, as the other BL Lacs. For FSRQs, more complicated colour-flux behaviours are observed: redder-when-brighter for low states saturating above a certain level and, in some cases, turning to bluer-when-brighter. We are able to reproduce the variability observed during 10 years using only 2 to 4 components, depending on the type. The simplest scenario corresponds to host-galaxy blazars, whose spectra are reconstructed using the stellar population and a power law for the jet. BL Lac spectra are reproduced using from 2 to 4 power laws. Different components can be associated to acceleration/cooling processes taking place in the jet. The reconstruction of FSRQs also incorporates a QSO-like component to account for the BLR, plus a very steep power law, associated to the accretion disk., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

To study the nuclear ($\lesssim1\,$kpc) dust of nearby ($z<0.1$) type 1 Quasi Stellar Objects (QSOs) we obtained new near-infrared (NIR) high angular resolution ($\sim0.3$ arcsec) photometry in the H and Ks bands, for 13 QSOs with available mid-infrared (MIR) high angular resolution spectroscopy ($\sim7.5-13.5\,\mu$m). We find that in most QSOs the NIR emission is unresolved. We subtract the contribution from the accretion disk, which decreases from NIR ($\sim35\%$) to MIR ($\sim2.4\%$). We also estimate these percentages assuming a bluer accretion disk and find that the contibution in the MIR is nearly seven time larger. We find that the majority of objects ($64\%$, 9/13) are better fitted by the Disk+Wind H17 model \citep[][]{Hoenig17}, while others can be fitted by the Smooth F06 \citep[$14\%$, 2/13,][]{Fritz06}, Clumpy N08 \citep[$7\%$, 1/13,][]{Nenkova08a,Nenkova08b}, Clumpy H10 \citep[$7\%$, 1/13,][]{Hoenig10b}, and Two-Phase media S16 \citep[$7\%$, 1/13,][]{Stalev16} models. However, if we assume the bluer accretion disk, the models fit only 2/13 objects. We measured two NIR to MIR spectral indexes, $\alpha_{NIR-MIR(1.6,8.7\,\mu\text{m})}$ and $\alpha_{NIR-MIR(2.2,8.7\,\mu\text{m})}$, and two MIR spectral indexes, $\alpha_{MIR(7.8, 9.8\,\mu\text{m})}$ and $\alpha_{MIR(9.8, 11.7\,\mu\text{m})}$, from models and observations. From observations, we find that the NIR to MIR spectral indexes are $\sim-1.1$ and the MIR spectral indexes are $\sim-0.3$. Comparing the synthetic and observed values, we find that none of the models simultaneously match the measured NIR to MIR and $7.8-9.8\,\mu$m slopes. However, we note that measuring the $\alpha_{MIR(7.8, 9.8\,\mu\text{m})}$ on the starburst-subtracted {\it Spitzer}/IRS spectrum, gives values of the slopes ($\sim-2$) that are similar to the synthetic values obtained from the models., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We compare mid-IR and ALMA far-IR images of 12 nearby Seyferts selected from GATOS. The mid-IR unresolved emission contributes more than 60% of the nuclear emission in most galaxies. By contrast, the ALMA 870micron continuum emission is mostly resolved and typically along the torus equatorial direction (Paper I, Garcia-Burillo et al. 2021). The Eddington ratios and nuclear hydrogen column densities NH of half the sample are favorable to launching polar and/or equatorial dusty winds, according to simulations. Six show mid-IR extended emission in the polar direction as traced by the NLR and perpendicular to the ALMA emission. In a few, the nuclear NH might be too high to uplift large quantities of dusty material along the polar direction. Five galaxies have low NH and/or Eddington ratios and thus polar dusty winds are not likely. We generate new CAT3D-WIND disk-wind model images. At low wind-to-disk cloud ratios the far-IR model images have disk- and ring-like morphologies. The X-shape associated with dusty winds is seen better in the far-IR at intermediate-high inclinations for the extended-wind configurations. In most models, the mid-IR emission comes from the inner part of the disk/cone. Extended bi-conical and one-sided polar mid-IR emission is seen in extended-wind configurations and high wind-to-disk cloud ratios. When convolved to our resolution, the model images reproduce qualitative aspects of the observed morphologies. Low-intermediate wind-to-disk ratios are required to account for the large fractions of unresolved mid-IR emission. This work and Paper I provide observational support for the torus+wind scenario. The wind component is more relevant at high Eddington ratios and/or AGN luminosities, and polar dust emission is predicted at NH of up to $10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$. We present the first results of the Galaxy Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS), a project aimed at understanding the properties of the dusty molecular tori and their connection to the host galaxy in nearby Seyfert galaxies. Our project expands the range of AGN luminosities and Eddington ratios covered by previous surveys of Seyferts conducted by ALMA and allows us to study the gas feeding and feedback cycle in a combined sample of 19 Seyferts. We used ALMA to obtain new images of the emission of molecular gas and dust using the CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines as well as their underlying continuum emission at 870 microns with high spatial resolutions (0.1'' ~ 7 - 13 pc) in the CND of 10 nearby (D < 28 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. Our new ALMA observations detect 870 micron continuum and CO line emission from spatially resolved disks located around the AGN in all the sources. The bulk of the continuum flux can be accounted for by thermal emission from dust in the majority of the targets. For most of the sources the disks show a preponderant orientation perpendicular to the AGN wind axes, as expected for dusty molecular tori. The median diameters and molecular gas masses of the tori are ~ 42 pc, and ~ 6 x 10**5 Msun, respectively. We find a positive correlation between the line-of-sight gas column densities responsible for the absorption of X-rays and the molecular gas column densities derived from CO towards the AGN in our sources. The radial distributions of molecular gas in the CND of our combined sample show signs of nuclear-scale molecular gas deficits. We also detect molecular outflows in the sources that show the most extreme nuclear-scale gas deficits in our sample. We study the multi-phase feedback processes in the central ~3 kpc of the barred Sy 2 galaxy NGC 5643. We use observations of the cold molecular gas (ALMA CO(2-1)) and ionized gas (MUSE IFU). We study different regions along the outflow zone which extends out to ~2.3 kpc in the same direction (east-west) as the radio jet, as well as nuclear/circumnuclear regions in the host galaxy disk. The deprojected outflowing velocities of the cold molecular gas (median Vcentral~189 km s^-1) are generally lower than those of the outflowing ionized gas, which reach deprojected velocities of up to 750 km s^-1 close to the AGN, and their spatial profiles follow those of the ionized phase. This suggests that the outflowing molecular gas in the galaxy disk is being entrained by the AGN wind. We derive molecular and ionized outflow masses of ~5.2x10^7 Msun and 8.5x10^4 Msun and molecular and ionized outflow mass rates of ~51 Msun yr^-1 and 0.14 Msun yr^-1. Therefore, the molecular phase dominates the outflow mass and outflow mass rate, while the outflow kinetic power and momentum are similar in both phases. However, the wind momentum load for the molecular and ionized outflow phases are ~27-5 and <1, which suggests that the molecular phase is not momentum conserving while the ionized one most certainly is. The molecular gas content (~1.5x10^7 Msun) of the eastern spiral arm is approximately 50-70% of the content of the western one. We interpret this as destruction/clearing of the molecular gas produced by the AGN wind impacting in the host galaxy. The increase of the molecular phase momentum implies that part of the kinetic energy from the AGN wind is transmitted to the molecular outflow. This suggest that in Sy-like AGN such as NGC 5643, the radiative/quasar and the kinetic/radio AGN feedback modes coexist and may shape the host galaxies even at kpc-scales via both positive and (mild) negative feedback., Comment: 26 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables. One distinctive feature of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) is the relatively weak reflection features they may display in the X-ray spectrum, which can result from the disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. Some material, however, must surround the active nucleus, i.e., the accretion flow itself and, possibly, a flattened-out or thinned torus. In this work, we study whether reflection is indeed absent or undetectable due to its intrinsically weak features together with the low statistics inherent to LLAGN. Here we focus on NGC 3718 ($L/L_{\rm Edd}\sim10^{-5}$) combining observations from XMM--Newton and the deepest to date NuSTAR (0.5--79 keV) spectrum of a LLAGN, to constrain potential reflectors, and analyze how the fitted coronal parameters depend on the reflection model. We test models representing both an accretion disc (Relxill) and a torus-like (MYTorus and Borus) neutral reflector. From a statistical point of view, reflection is not required, but its inclusion allows to place strong constraints on the geometry and physical features of the surroundings: both neutral reflectors (torus) tested should be Compton thin ($N_H<10^{23.2}$cm$^{-2}$) and preferentially cover a large fraction of the sky. If the reflected light instead arises from an ionized reflector, a highly ionized case is preferred. These models produce an intrinsic power-law spectral index in the range [1.81--1.87], where the torus models result in steeper slopes. The cut-off energy of the power-law emission also changes with the inclusion of reflection models, resulting in constrained values for the disc reflectors and unconstrained values for torus reflectors., Comment: 15 pages and 16 Figures

We investigate the relation between the detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature in the nuclear ($\sim 24-230\,$pc) regions of 22 nearby Seyfert galaxies and the properties of the cold molecular gas. For the former we use ground-based (0.3-0.6" resolution) mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. The cold molecular gas is traced by ALMA and NOEMA high (0.2-1.1") angular resolution observations of the CO(2-1) transition. Galaxies with a nuclear detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature contain more cold molecular gas (median $1.6\times 10^7\,M_\odot$) and have higher column densities ($N({\rm H}_2) = 2 \times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$) over the regions sampled by the mid-IR slits than those without a detection. This suggests that molecular gas plays a role in shielding the PAH molecules in the harsh environments of Seyfert nuclei. Choosing the PAH molecule naphthalene as an illustration, we compute its half-life in the nuclear regions of our sample when exposed to 2.5keV hard X-ray photons. We estimate shorter half-lives for naphthalene in nuclei without a $11.3\,\mu$m PAH detection than in those with a detection. The Spitzer/IRS PAH ratios on circumnuclear scales ($\sim$ 4" $\sim$ 0.25-1.3kpc) are in between model predictions for neutral and partly ionized PAHs. However, Seyfert galaxies in our sample with the highest nuclear H$_2$ column densities are not generally closer to the neutral PAH tracks. This is because in the majority of our sample galaxies, the CO(2-1) emission in the inner $\sim$ 4" is not centrally peaked and in some galaxies traces circumnuclear sites of strong star formation activity. Spatially resolved observations with the MIRI medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS) on the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to distinguish the effects of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation on the PAH emission in nearby AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the highlights from our recent study of 22 local (z$<$0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on the basis of optical long-slit spectroscopic observations taken with TWIN/CAHA, ALFOSC/NOT and HST/STIS (Cazzoli et al. 2018). Our goals were threefold: (a) explore the AGN- nature of these LINERs by studying the broad (BLR-originated) H$\alpha$ component; (b) derive a reliable interpretation for the multiple narrow components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionisation mechanism (via standard BPTs); (c) probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs for the first time. We measure the 10 and $18\mu$m silicate features in a sample of 67 local ($z<0.1$) type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with available {\it Spitzer} spectra dominated by non-stellar processes. We find that the $10\mu$m silicate feature peaks at $10.3^{+0.7}_{-0.9}\mu$m with a strength (Si$_{p}$ = ln f$_{p}$(spectrum)/f$_{p}$(continuum)) of $0.11^{+0.15}_{-0.36}$, while the $18\mu$m one peaks at $17.3^{+0.4}_{-0.7}\mu$m with a strength of $0.14^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$. We select from this sample sources with the strongest 10$\mu$m silicate strength ($\sigma_{Si_{10\mu m}}>0.28$, 10 objects). We carry out a detailed modeling of the IRS/{\it Spitzer} spectra by comparing several models that assume different geometries and dust composition: a smooth torus model, two clumpy torus models, a two-phase medium torus model, and a disk+outflow clumpy model. We find that the silicate features are well modeled by the clumpy model of Nenkova et al. 2008, and among all models those including outflows and complex dust composition are the best (Hoenig et al. 2017). We note that even in AGN-dominated galaxies it is usually necessary to add stellar contributions to reproduce the emission at the shortest wavelengths., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

A detailed multi-wavelength study of the properties of the triple-peaked AGN Mrk\,622 showing different aspects of the nuclear emission region is presented. Radio, near- and mid-infrared, optical and X-ray data has been considered for the analysis. In the optical, the WHAN diagnostic diagrams show that the three nuclear peaks are strong active galactic nuclei since the EW of $H{\alpha}$ is $>$\,6 \AA\, and $\log$ [NII]$\lambda$6584/H$\alpha$\, ratio is $>$\,-0.4. Optical variability of both the continuum flux and intensity of the narrow emission lines is detected in a time-span of 13 years. The size of the narrow line region is found to be 2.7\,pc, with a light-crossing time of 8.7\,y. Analysis done to an archival Hubble Space Telescope image at 1055.2\,nm shows that the host galaxy has a 3.6\,kpc inner bar with PA\,=\,74$^\circ$, faint spiral arms and a pseudobulge, evolving through secular processes. High resolution mid-infrared images obtained with the \textit{Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC)} and the instrument \textit{CanariCam} show that the nuclear emission at 11.6 $\mu$m is not spatially resolved. Very Large Array archival observations at 10\,GHz reveal a core source with a total flux density of 1.47\,$\pm$\,0.03\,mJy. The spectral index of the core between 8 and 12\,GHz is -0.5\,$\pm$\,0.2, characteristic of AGN. The core deconvolves into a source with dimensions of 82\,$\pm$\,13\,mas\,$\,\times\,$\,41\,$\pm$\,20\,mas, and a PA\,=\,70\,$\pm$\,18\,deg; which suggests that the core is elongated or that it is constituted by multiple components distributed along a $\sim$65$^\circ$ axis., Comment: Accepted October 4, 18 pages, 12 figures

This is the second in a series of papers devoted to explore a set of six dusty models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with available spectral energy distributions (SEDs). These models are the smooth torus by Fritz et al. (2006), the clumpy torus by Nenkova et al. (2008B), the clumpy torus by Hoenig & Kishimoto (2010), the two phase torus by Siebenmorgen et al. (2015), the two phase torus by Stalevski et al. (2016), and the wind model by Hoenig & Kishimoto (2017). The first paper explores discrimination among models and the parameter restriction using synthetic spectra (Gonzalez-Martin et al. 2019A). Here we perform spectral fitting of a sample of 110 AGN drawn from the Swift/BAT survey with Spitzer/IRS spectroscopic data. The aim is to explore which is the model that describes better the data and the resulting parameters. The clumpy wind-disk model by Hoenig & Kishimoto (2017) provides good fits for ~50% of the sample, and the clumpy torus model by Nenkova et al. (2008B) is good at describing ~30% of the objects. The wind-disk model by Hoenig & Kishimoto (2017) is better for reproducing the mid-infrared spectra of Type-1 Seyferts while Type-2 Seyferts are equally fitted by both models. Large residuals are found irrespective of the model used, indicating that the AGN dust continuum emission is more complex than predicted by the models or that the parameter space is not well sampled. We found that all the resulting parameters for our AGN sample are roughly constrained to 10-20% of the parameter space. The derived outer radius of the torus is smaller for the smooth torus by Fritz et al. (2006) and the two phase torus by Stalevski et al. (2016) than the one derived from the clumpy torus by (Nenkova et al. 2008B). Covering factors and line-of-sight viewing angles strongly depend on the model used. At distances from the active galaxy nucleus (AGN) where the ambient temperature falls below ~1500-1800 K, dust is able to survive. It is thus possible to have a large dusty structure present which surrounds the AGN. This is the first of two papers aiming at comparing six dusty torus models with available SEDs, namely Fritz et al. (2006), Nenkova et al. (2008B), Hoenig & Kishimoto (2010), Siebenmorgen et al. (2015), Stalevski et al. (2016), and Hoenig & Kishimoto (2017). In this first paper we use synthetic spectra to explore the discrimination between these models and under which circumstances they allow to restrict the torus parameters, while our second paper analyzes the best model to describe the mid-infrared spectroscopic data. We have produced synthetic spectra from current instruments: GTC/CanariCam and Spitzer /IRS and future JWST/MIRI and JWST/NIRSpec instruments. We find that for a reasonable brightness (F12um > 100mJy) we can actually distinguish among models except for the two pair of parent models. We show that these models can be distinguished based on the continuum slopes and the strength of the silicate features. Moreover, their parameters can be constrained within 15% of error, irrespective of the instrument used, for all the models but Hoenig & Kishimoto (2017). However, the parameter estimates are ruined when more than 50% of circumnuclear contributors are included. Therefore, future high spatial resolution spectra as those expected from JWST will provide enough coverage and spatial resolution to tackle this topic., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Mrk 1498 is part of a sample of galaxies with extended emission line regions (extended outwards up to a distance of $\sim$7 kpc) suggested to be photo-ionized by an AGN that has faded away or that is still active but heavily absorbed. Interestingly, the nucleus of Mrk 1498 is at the center of two giant radio lobes with a projected linear size of 1.1 Mpc. Our multi-wavelength analysis reveals a complex nuclear structure, with a young radio source (Giga-hertz Peaked Spectrum) surrounded by a strong X-ray nuclear absorption, a mid-infrared spectrum that is dominated by the torus emission, plus a circum-nuclear extended emission in the [OIII] image (with radius of $\sim$ 1 kpc), most likely related to the ionization of the AGN, aligned with the small and large scale radio jet and extended also at X-rays. In addition a large-scale extended emission (up to $\sim$ 10 kpc) is only visible in [OIII]. These data show conclusive evidence of a heavily absorbed nucleus and has recently restarted its nuclear activity. To explain its complexity, we propose that Mrk 1498 is the result of a merging event or secular processes, such as a minor interaction, that has triggered the nuclear activity and produced tidal streams. We characterize for the first time the torus properties of an ultra-hard X-ray (14-195 keV) volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc) sample of 24 Seyfert (Sy) galaxies (BCS40 sample). The sample was selected from the Swift/BAT nine month catalog. We use high angular resolution nuclear infrared (IR) photometry and N-band spectroscopy, the CLUMPY torus models and a Bayesian tool to characterize the properties of the nuclear dust. In the case of the Sy1s we estimate the accretion disk contribution to the subarcsecond resolution nuclear IR SEDs (~0.4'') which is, on average, 46+-28, 23+-13 and 11+-5% in the J-, H- and K-bands, respectively. This indicates that the accretion disk templates that assume a steep fall for longer wavelengths than 1 micron might underestimate its contribution to the near-IR emission. Using both optical (broad vs narrow lines) and X-ray (unabsorbed vs absorbed) classifications, we compare the global posterior distribution of the torus model parameters. We confirm that Sy2s have larger values of the torus covering factor (CT~0.95) than Sy1s (CT~0.65) in our volume-limited Seyfert sample. These findings are independent of whether we use an optical or X-ray classification. We find that the torus covering factor remains essentially constant within the errors in our luminosity range and there is no clear dependence with the Eddington ratio. Finally, we find tentative evidence that even an ultra hard X-ray selection is missing a significant fraction of highly absorbed type 2 sources with very high covering factor tori., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures and 14 tables. We examine star formation activity in a distance- (z<0.1) and flux-limited sample of quasars (QSOs). Mid-infrared (MIR) spectral diagnostics at high spatial resolution (~0.4 arcsec) yield star formation rates (SFRs) in the inner regions (~300 pc to 1 kpc) for 13 of 20 of the sample members. We group these objects according to the size probed by the high angular resolution spectroscopy, with characteristic scales of <0.7 and ~0.7-1 kpc. Using the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature at 11.3 um, we measure SFRs around 0.2 and 1.6 M_{\odot}yr^{-1}. We also measure the larger aperture PAH-derived SFRs in the individual IRS/Spitzer spectra of the sample and obtain a clear detection in ~58 percent of them. We compare smaller and larger aperture measurements and find that they are similar, suggesting that star formation activity in these QSOs is more centrally concentrated, with the inner region (>~1 kpc) accounting for the majority of star formation measured on these scales, and that PAH molecules can be present in most local MIR-bright QSOs within a few hundred pc from the central engine. By comparison with merger simulations, we find that our estimation of the SFR and black hole (BH) accretion rates are consistent with a scenario in which the star formation activity is centrally peaked as predicted by simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Balmer emission originated in the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could be either weak and difficult to detect, or even absent, for low luminosity AGNs, as LINERs. Our goals in this paper are threefold. First, we want to explore the AGN-nature of nearby type-1 LINERs. Second, we aim at deriving a reliable interpretation for the different components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionization mechanism. Third, we intend to probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs. We study the 22 local (z<0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on the basis of optical ground- and space-based long-slit spectroscopic observations taken with TWIN/CAHA and ALFOSC/NOT. Kinematics and fluxes of a set of emission lines, from H{\beta} to [S II], and the NaD doublet in absorption have been modelled and measured, after the subtraction of the underlying starlight. We also use ancillary spectroscopic data from HST/STIS. We found that the broad H{\alpha} component is sometimes elusive in our ground-based spectroscopy whereas it is ubiquitous for space-based data. By combining optical diagnostic diagrams, theoretical models (for AGNs, pAGB-stars and shocks) and the weak/strong-[O I] classification, we exclude the pAGBs-stars scenario in favor of the AGN as the dominant mechanism of ionisation in these LINERs, being shocks however relevant. The kinematical properties of the emission lines may indicate the presence of ionized outflows, preferentially seen in [O I]. We combine new (NGC 1275, NGC 4151, and NGC 5506) and previously published (Cygnus A, Mrk 231, and NGC 1068) sub-arcsecond resolution mid-infrared (MIR; 8-13 $\mu$m) imaging- and spectro-polarimetric observations of six Seyfert galaxies using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. These observations reveal a diverse set of physical processes responsible for the nuclear polarization, and permit characterization of the origin of the MIR nuclear polarimetric signature of active galactic nuclei (AGN). For all radio quiet objects, we found that the nuclear polarization is low (<1 per cent), and the degree of polarization is often a few per cent over extended regions of the host galaxy where we have sensitivity to detect such extended emission (i.e., NGC 1068 and NGC 4151). We suggest that the higher degree of polarization previously found in lower resolution data arises only on the larger-than-nuclear scales. Only the radio-loud Cygnus A exhibits significant nuclear polarization ($\sim$11 per cent), attributable to synchrotron emission from the pc-scale jet close to the core. We present polarization models that suggest that the MIR nuclear polarization for highly obscured objects arises from a self-absorbed MIR polarized clumpy torus and/or dichroism from the host galaxy, while for unabsorbed cores, MIR polarization arises from dust scattering in the torus and/or surrounding nuclear dust., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. A large fraction of early-type galaxies (ETGs) host prominent dust features, and central dust rings are arguably the most interesting among them. We present here `Lord Of The Rings' (LOTR), a new methodology which allows to integrate the extinction by dust rings in a 2D fitting modelling of the surface brightness distribution. Our pipeline acts in two steps, first using the surface fitting software GALFIT to determine the unabsorbed stellar emission, and then adopting the radiative transfer code SKIRT to apply dust extinction. We apply our technique to NGC 4552 and NGC 4494, two nearby ETGs. We show that the extinction by a dust ring can mimic, in a surface brightness profile, a central point source (e.g. an unresolved nuclear stellar cluster or an active galactic nucleus; AGN) superimposed to a `core' (i.e. a central flattening of the stellar light commonly observed in massive ETGs). We discuss how properly accounting for dust features is of paramount importance to derive correct fluxes especially for low luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). We suggest that the geometries of dust features are strictly connected with how relaxed is the gravitational potential, i.e. with the evolutionary stage of the host galaxy. We present ALMA Band 6 $^{12}$CO(2--1) line and rest-frame 232GHz continuum observations of the nearby Compton-thick Seyfert galaxy NGC5643 with angular resolutions 0.11-0.26arcsec (9-21pc). The CO(2--1) integrated line map reveals emission from the nuclear and circumnuclear region with a two-arm nuclear spiral extending 10arcsec on each side. The circumnuclear CO(2--1) kinematics can be fitted with a rotating disk, although there are regions with large residual velocities and/or velocity dispersions. The CO(2--1) line profiles of these regions show two different velocity components. One is ascribed to the circular component and the other to the interaction of the AGN outflow, as traced by the [O III]5007AA emission, with molecular gas in the disk a few hundred parsecs from the AGN. On nuclear scales, we detected an inclined CO(2--1) disk (diameter 26 pc, FWHM) oriented almost in a north-south direction. The CO(2--1) nuclear kinematics can be fitted with a rotating disk which appears to be tilted with respect to the large scale disk. There are strong non-circular motions in the central 0.2-0.3 arcsec with velocities of up to 110km/s. In the absence of a nuclear bar, these motions could be explained as radial outflows in the nuclear disk. We estimate a total molecular gas mass for the nuclear disk of $M({\rm H}_2)=1.1\times 10^7\,M_\odot$ and an H$_2$ column density toward the location of the AGN of $N({\rm H}_2)\sim 5 \times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$, for a standard CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. We interpret this nuclear molecular gas disk as the obscuring torus of NGC5643 as well as the collimating structure of the ionization cone., Comment: 16 papes, 9 figures. Accepted to ApJ. Scaling relations are the most powerful astrophysical tools to set constraints to the physical mechanisms of astro- nomical sources and to infer properties that cannot be accessed directly. We re-investigate here one of these scaling relations in active galactic nuclei (AGN); the so-called X-ray variability plane (or mass-luminosity-timescale relation, McHardy et al. 2006). This relation links the power-spectral density (PSD) break frequency with the super-massive black hole (SMBH) mass and the bolometric luminosity. We used available XMM -Newton observations of a sample of 22 AGN to study the PSD and spectra in short segments within each observation. This allows us to report for the first time that the PSD break frequency varies for each object, showing variations in 19 out of the 22 AGN analyzed. Our analysis of the variability plane confirms the relation between the break frequency and the SMBH mass and finds that the obscuration along the line of sight NH (or the variations on the obscuration using its standard deviation, $\rm{\Delta}$(NH)) is also a required parameter, at least for the range of frequencies analyzed here (3x10E-5-5x10E-2Hz). We constrain a new variability plane of the form: log($\nu_{Break}$) = (-0.589$\rm{\pm}$0.005) log(MBH ) + (0.10$\rm{\pm}$0.01) log(NH ) - (1.5$\rm{\pm}$0.3) (or log($\nu_{Break}$)=(-0.549$\rm{\pm}$0.009)log(MBH)+(0.56$\rm{\pm}$0.06)$\rm{\Delta}$(NH)+(0.19$\rm{\pm}$0.08)). The X-ray variability plane found by McHardy et al. (2006) is roughly recovered when we use unobscured segments. Mrk\,622 is a Compton Thick AGN and a double-peaked narrow emission line galaxy, thus a dual AGN candidate. In this work, new optical long-slit spectroscopic observations clearly show that this object is rather a triple peaked narrow emission line galaxy, with both blue and red shifted narrow emission lines, as well as a much narrower emission line centred at the host galaxy systemic velocity. The average velocity offset between the blue and red shifted components is $\sim$500 km\,s$^{-1}$, which is producing the apparent double-peaked emission lines. These two components are in the loci of AGN in the Baldwin, Phillips \& Terlevich (BPT) diagrams and are found to be spatially separated by $\sim$76 pc. Analysis of the optical spatially resolved spectroscopic observations presented in this work favours that Mrk\,622 is a system consisting of a Composite AGN amidst a binary AGN candidate, likely the result of a recent merger. This notwithstanding, outflows from a starburst, or single AGN could also explain the triple nature of the emission lines., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. Deep exposure imaging of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are revealing the second-order complexity of these objects, which have been long considered uniform, dispersion-supported spheroidals. "Fine structure" features (e.g. ripples, plumes, tidal tails, rings) as well as depleted stellar cores (i.e. central light deficits) characterize a number of massive ETG galaxies, and can be interpreted as the result of galaxy-galaxy interactions. We discuss how the timescale for the evolution of cores and fine structures are comparable, and hence it is expected that they develop in parallel after the major interaction event which shaped the ETG. Using archival data, we compare the "depleted stellar mass" (i.e. the mass missing from the depleted stellar core) against the prominence of the fine structure features, and observe that they correlate inversely. This result confirms our expectation that, while the Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) binary (constituted by the SMBHs of the merger progenitors) excavates the core via three-body interactions, the gravitational potential of the newborn galaxy relaxes, and the fine structures fade below detection levels. We expect the inverse correlation to hold at least within the first Gyr from the merger which created the SMBH binary; after then, the fine structure evolves independently., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

We present new calculations of the CAT3D clumpy torus models, which now include a more physical dust sublimation model as well as AGN anisotropic emission. These new models allow graphite grains to persist at temperatures higher than the silicate dust sublimation temperature. This produces stronger near-infrared emission and bluer mid-infrared (MIR) spectral slopes. We make a statistical comparison of the CAT3D model MIR predictions with a compilation of sub-arcsecond resolution ground-based MIR spectroscopy of 52 nearby Seyfert galaxies (median distance of 36 Mpc) and 10 quasars. We focus on the AGN MIR spectral index $\alpha_{MIR}$ and the strength of the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate feature $S_{Sil}$. As with other clumpy torus models, the new CAT3D models do not reproduce the Seyfert galaxies with deep silicate absorption ($S_{Sil}<-1$). Excluding those, we conclude that the new CAT3D models are in better agreement with the observed $\alpha_{MIR}$ and $S_{Sil}$ of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. We find that Seyfert 2 are reproduced with models with low photon escape probabilities, while the quasars and the Seyfert 1-1.5 require generally models with higher photon escape probabilities. Quasars and Seyfert 1-1.5 tend to show steeper radial cloud distributions and fewer clouds along an equatorial line-of-sight than Seyfert 2. Introducing AGN anisotropic emission besides the more physical dust sublimation models alleviates the problem of requiring inverted radial cloud distributions (i.e., more clouds towards the outer parts of the torus) to explain the MIR spectral indices of type 2 Seyferts., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Several authors have claimed that the less luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) are not capable of sustaining the dusty torus structure. Thus, a gradual re-sizing of the torus is expected when the AGN luminosity decreases. Our aim is to confront mid-infrared observations of local AGN of different luminosities with this scenario. We decomposed about ~100 IRS/Spitzer spectra of LLAGN and powerful Seyferts in order to decontaminate the torus component from other contributors. We have used the affinity propagation (AP) method to cluster the data into five groups within the sample according to torus contribution to the 5-15 um range (Ctorus) and bolometric luminosity. The AP groups show a progressively higher torus contribution and an increase of the bolometric luminosity, from Group 1 (Ctorus~ 0% and logLbol ~ 41) and up to Group 5 (Ctorus ~80% and log(Lbol) ~44). We have fitted the average spectra of each of the AP groups to clumpy models. The torus is no longer present in Group 1, supporting the disappearance at low-luminosities. We were able to fit the average spectra for the torus component in Groups 3 (Ctorus~ 40% and log(Lbol)~ 42.6), 4 (Ctorus~ 60% and log(Lbol)~ 43.7), and 5 to Clumpy torus models. We did not find a good fitting to Clumpy torus models for Group 2 (Ctorus~ 18% and log(Lbol)~ 42). This might suggest a different configuration and/or composition of the clouds for Group 2, which is consistent with a different gas content seen in Groups 1, 2, and 3, according to the detections of H2 molecular lines. Groups 3, 4, and 5 show a trend to decrease of the width of the torus (which yields to a likely decrease of the geometrical covering factor), although we cannot confirm it with the present data. Finally, Groups 3, 4, and 5 show an increase on the outer radius of the torus for higher luminosities, consistent with a re-sizing of the torus according to the AGN luminosity., Comment: The main body includes 9 figures. We present mid-infrared (MIR, 7.5-13.5 $\mu$m) imaging and spectroscopy observations obtained with the CanariCam (CC) instrument on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS for a sample of 20 nearby, MIR bright and X-ray luminous QSOs. We find that for the majority of QSOs the MIR emission is unresolved at angular scales nearly 0.3 arcsec, corresponding to physical scales $<600$ pc. We find that the higher-spatial resolution CC spectra have similar shapes to those obtained with Spitzer/IRS, and hence we can assume that the spectra are not heavily contaminated by extended emission in the host galaxy. We thus take advantage of the higher signal to noise Spitzer/IRS spectra, as a fair representation of the nuclear emission, to decompose it into a combination of active galactic nuclei (AGN), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and stellar components. In most cases the AGN is the dominant component, with a median contribution of 85 per cent of the continuum light at MIR (5-15 $\mu$m) within the IRS slit. This IR AGN emission is well reproduced by clumpy torus models. We find evidence for significant differences in the parameters that describe the dusty tori of QSOs when compared with the same parameters of Seyfert 1 and 2 nuclei. In particular, we find a lower number of clouds ($N_{0}<12$), steeper radial distribution of clouds ($q=1.5-3.0$), and clouds that are less optically thick ($\tau_{V}<100$) than in Seyfert 1, which could be attributed to dusty structures that have been partially evaporated and piled up by the higher radiation field in QSOs. We find that the combination of the angular width $\sigma_{torus}$, viewing angle $i$, and number of clouds along the equatorial line $N_{0}$, produces large escape probabilities ($P_{esc} > 2$ per cent) and low geometrical covering factors ($f_{2}<0.6$), as expected for AGN with broad lines in their optical spectra., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from a deep sub-millimeter survey in the Serpens Main and Serpens/G3-G6 clusters, conducted with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA-2) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We have combined Herschel PACS far-infrared photometry, sub-millimeter continuum and molecular gas line observations, with the aim to conduct a detailed multi-wavelength characterization of `proto-brown dwarf' candidates in Serpens. We have performed continuum and line radiative transfer modeling, and have considered various classification schemes to understand the structure and the evolutionary stage of the system. We have identified four proto-brown dwarf candidates, of which the lowest luminosity source has an Lbol ~0.05 Lsun. Two of these candidates show characteristics consistent with Stage 0/I systems, while the other two are Stage I-T/Class Flat systems with tenuous envelopes. Our work has also revealed a ~20% fraction of mis-identified Class 0/I/Flat sources that show characteristics consistent with Class II edge-on disk systems. We have set constraints on the mass of the central object using the measured bolometric luminosities and numerical simulations of stellar evolution. Considering the available gas+dust mass reservoir and the current mass of the central source, three of these candidates are likely to evolve into brown dwarfs., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We present high-angular (0.17$-$0.35 arcsec) resolution imaging polarimetric observations of Mrk 231 in the 3.1 $\mu$m filter using MMT-Pol on the 6.5-m MMT, and in the 8.7 $\mu$m, 10.3 $\mu$m, and 11.6 $\mu$m filters using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. In combination with already published observations, we compile the 1$-$12 $\mu$m total and polarized nuclear spectral energy distribution (SED). The total flux SED in the central 400 pc is explained as the combination of 1) a hot (731 $\pm$ 4 K) dusty structure, directly irradiated by the central engine, which is at 1.6 $\pm$ 0.1 pc away and attributed to be in the pc-scale polar region, 2) an optically-thick, smooth and disk-like dusty structure (`torus') with an inclination of 48 $\pm$ 23$^{\circ}$ surrounding the central engine, and 3) an extinguished (A$_{\mbox{V}} =$ 36 $\pm$ 5 mag) starburst component. The polarized SED decreases from 0.77 $\pm$ 0.14 per cent at 1.2 $\mu$m to 0.31 $\pm$ 0.15 per cent at 11.6 $\mu$m and follows a power-law function, $\lambda^{\sim0.57}$. The polarization angle remains constant ($\sim$108$^{\circ}$) in the 1$-$12 $\mu$m wavelength range. The dominant polarization mechanism is explained as scattering off hot dust grains in the pc-scale polar regions., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the evolutionary connection between local IR-bright galaxies ($\log L_{\rm IR}\ge 11.4\,L_\odot$) and quasars. We use high angular resolution ($\sim$ 0.3-0.4 arcsec $\sim$ few hundred parsecs) $8-13\,\mu$m ground-based spectroscopy to disentangle the AGN mid-IR properties from those of star formation. The comparison between the nuclear $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature emission and that measured with Spitzer/IRS indicates that the star formation is extended over a few kpc in the IR-bright galaxies. The AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity of IR-bright galaxies is lower than in quasars. Although the dust distribution is predicted to change as IR-bright galaxies evolve to IR-bright quasars and then to optical quasars, we show that the AGN mid-IR emission of all the quasars in our sample is not significantly different. In contrast, the nuclear emission of IR-bright galaxies with low AGN contributions appears more heavily embedded in dust although there is no clear trend with the interaction stage or projected nuclear separation. This suggests that the changes in the distribution of the nuclear obscuring material may be taking place rapidly and at different interaction stages washing out the evidence of an evolutionary path. When compared to normal AGN, the nuclear star formation activity of quasars appears to be dimming whereas it is enhanced in some IR-bright nuclei, suggesting that the latter are in an earlier star-formation dominated phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present subarcsecond resolution mid-infrared (MIR) images obtained with 8-10 m-class ground-based telescopes of a complete volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc) sample of 24 Seyfert galaxies selected from the Swift/BAT nine month catalog. We use those MIR images to study the nuclear and circumnuclear emission of the galaxies. Using different methods to classify the MIR morphologies on scales of ~400 pc, we find that the majority of the galaxies (75-83%) are extended or possibly extended and 17-25% are point-like. This extended emission is compact and it has low surface brightness compared with the nuclear emission, and it represents, on average, ~30% of the total MIR emission of the galaxies in the sample. We find that the galaxies whose circumnuclear MIR emission is dominated by star formation show more extended emission (650+-700 pc) than AGN-dominated systems (300+-100 pc). In general, the galaxies with point-like MIR morphologies are face-on or moderately inclined (b/a~0.4-1.0), and we do not find significant differences between the morphologies of Sy1 and Sy2. We used the nuclear and circumnuclear fluxes to investigate their correlation with different AGN and SF activity indicators. We find that the nuclear MIR emission (the inner ~70 pc) is strongly correlated with the X-ray emission (the harder the X-rays the better the correlation) and with the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron emission line, indicating that it is AGN-dominated. We find the same results, although with more scatter, for the circumnuclear emission, which indicates that the AGN dominates the MIR emission in the inner ~400 pc of the galaxies, with some contribution from star formation., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The origin of the unification model for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) was the detection of broad hydrogen recombination lines in the optical polarized spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy (Sy2) NGC 1068. Since then, a search for the hidden broad-line region (HBLR) of nearby Sy2s started, but polarized broad lines have only been detected in 30-40% of the nearby Sy2s observed to date. Here we present new VLT/FORS2 optical spectropolarimetry of a sample of 15 Sy2s, including Compton-thin and Compton-thick sources. The sample includes six galaxies without previously published spectropolarimetry, some of them normally treated as non-hidden BLR (NHBLR) objects in the literature, four classified as NHBLR, and five as HBLR based on previous data. We report >=4{\sigma} detections of a HBLR in 11 of these galaxies (73% of the sample) and a tentative detection in NGC 5793, which is Compton-thick according to the analysis of X-ray data performed here. Our results confirm that at least some NHBLRs are misclassified, bringing previous publications reporting differences between HBLR and NHBLR objects into question. We detect broad H{\alpha} and H{\beta} components in polarized light for 10 targets, and just broad H{\alpha} for NGC 5793 and NGC 6300, with line widths ranging between 2100 and 9600 km/s. High bolometric luminosities and low column densities are associated with higher polarization degrees, but not necessarily with the detection of the scattered broad components., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures (including appendices). We present far-infrared (FIR) $70-500\,\mu$m imaging observations obtained with Herschel/PACS and SPIRE of 33 nearby (median distance of 30 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies from the Revised Shapley-Ames (RSA) catalogue. We obtain the FIR nuclear ($r=1\,$kpc and $r=2\,$kpc) and integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We estimate the unresolved nuclear emission at 70 $\mu$m and we fit the nuclear and integrated FIR SEDs with a grey body model. We find that the integrated FIR emission of the RSA Seyferts in our sample is dominated by emission from the host galaxy, with dust properties similar to those of normal galaxies (non AGN). We use four criteria to select galaxies whose nuclear $70\,\mu$m emission has a significant AGN contribution: (1) elevated 70/160 $\mu$m flux ratios, (2)spatially resolved, high dust temperature gradient, (3) $70\,\mu$m excess emission with respect to the fit of the FIR SEDs with a grey body, and (4) excess of nuclear SFR obtained from $70\,\mu$m over SFR from mid-infrared indicators. 16 galaxies (48 per cent of the initial sample) satisfy at least one of these conditions, whereas 10 satisfy half or more. After careful examination of these, we select six bona fide candidates (18 per cent of the initial sample) and estimate that $\sim 40-70$ per cent of their nuclear ($r=1-2\,$kpc) $70\,\mu$m emission is contributed by dust heated by the AGN., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 12 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present sub-arcsecond 7.5$-$13 $\mu$m imaging- and spectro-polarimetric observations of NGC 1068 using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. At all wavelengths, we find: (1) A 90 $\times$ 60 pc extended polarized feature in the northern ionization cone, with a uniform $\sim$44$^{\circ}$ polarization angle. Its polarization arises from dust and gas emission in the ionization cone, heated by the active nucleus and jet, and further extinguished by aligned dust grains in the host galaxy. The polarization spectrum of the jet-molecular cloud interaction at $\sim$24 pc from the core is highly polarized, and does not show a silicate feature, suggesting that the dust grains are different from those in the interstellar medium. (2) A southern polarized feature at $\sim$9.6 pc from the core. Its polarization arises from a dust emission component extinguished by a large concentration of dust in the galaxy disc. We cannot distinguish between dust emission from magnetically aligned dust grains directly heated by the jet close to the core, and aligned dust grains in the dusty obscuring material surrounding the central engine. Silicate-like grains reproduce the polarized dust emission in this feature, suggesting different dust compositions in both ionization cones. (3) An upper limit of polarization degree of 0.3 per cent in the core. Based on our polarization model, the expected polarization of the obscuring dusty material is $\lesssim$0.1 per cent in the 8$-$13 $\mu$m wavelength range. Obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are thought to be very common in the Universe. Observations and surveys have shown that the number of sources increases for near galaxies and at the low-luminosity regime (the so-called LLAGNs). Furthermore, many AGNs show changes in their obscuration properties at X-rays that may suggest a configuration of clouds very close to the accretion disk. However, these variations could also be due to changes in the intrinsic continuum of the source. It is therefore important to study nearby AGN to better understand the locus and distribution of clouds in the neighbourhood of the nucleus. We aim to study the nuclear obscuration of LLAGN NGC835 and its extended emission using mid-infrared observations. We present mid-infrared 11.5 microns imaging of the LLAGN galaxy NGC835 obtained with the instrument CanariCam in the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), archival Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy, and archival Chandra data observed in 2000, 2008, and 2013. The GTC/CanariCam 11.5 microns image reveals faint extended emission out to ~6 arcsec. We obtained a nuclear flux of F(11.5 microns) ~18 mJy, whereas the extended emission accounts for 90% of the total flux within the 6 arcsec. This means that the low angular resolution (~4 arcsec) IRS spectrum is dominated by this extended emission and not by the AGN, clearly seen in the Spitzer/IRS spectrum. Although the extended soft X-ray emission shows some resemblance with that of the mid-infrared, the knots seen at X-rays are mostly located in the inner side of this mid-infrared emission. The nuclear X-ray spectrum of the source has undergone a spectral change between 2000/2008 and 2013. We argue that this is most probably due to changes in the hydrogen column density from ~ 8x10E+23 cm-2 to ~ 3x10E+23 cm-2. NGC835 therefore is one of the few LLAGN, together with NGC1052, in which changes in the absorber can be claimed., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present an atlas of mid-infrared (mid-IR) ~7.5-13micron spectra of 45 local active galactic nuclei (AGN) obtained with CanariCam on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) as part of an ESO/GTC large program. The sample includes Seyferts and other low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) at a median distance of 35Mpc and luminous AGN, namely PG quasars, (U)LIRGs, and radio galaxies (RG) at a median distance of 254Mpc. To date, this is the largest mid-IR spectroscopic catalog of local AGN at sub-arcsecond resolution (median 0.3arcsec). The goal of this work is to give an overview of the spectroscopic properties of the sample. The nuclear 12micron luminosities of the AGN span more than four orders of magnitude, nu*Lnu(12micron)~ 3e41-1e46erg/s. In a simple mid-IR spectral index vs. strength of the 9.7micron silicate feature diagram most LLAGN, Seyfert nuclei, PG quasars, and RGs lie in the region occupied by clumpy torus model tracks. However, the mid-IR spectra of some might include contributions from other mechanisms. Most (U)LIRG nuclei in our sample have deeper silicate features and flatter spectral indices than predicted by these models suggesting deeply embedded dust heating sources and/or contribution from star formation. The 11.3micron PAH feature is clearly detected in approximately half of the Seyfert nuclei, LLAGN, and (U)LIRGs. While the RG, PG quasars, and (U)LIRGs in our sample have similar nuclear 12micron luminosities, we do not detect nuclear PAH emission in the RGs and PG quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 22 pages, 8 figures

We present new mid-infrared N-band spectroscopy and Q-band photometry of the local luminous infrared galaxy NGC1614, one of the most extreme nearby starbursts. We analyze the mid-IR properties of the nucleus (central 150 pc) and four regions of the bright circumnuclear (diameter~600 pc) star-forming (SF) ring of this object. The nucleus differs from the circumnuclear SF ring by having a strong 8-12 micron continuum (low 11.3 micron PAH equivalent width). These characteristics, together with the nuclear X-ray and sub-mm properties, can be explained by an X-ray weak active galactic nucleus (AGN), or by peculiar SF with a short molecular gas depletion time and producing an enhanced radiation field density. In either case, the nuclear luminosity (L(IR) < 6e43 erg/s) is only <5% of the total bolometric luminosity of NGC1614. So this possible AGN does not dominate the energy output in this object. We also compare three star-formation rate (SFR) tracers (Pa$\alpha$, 11.3 micron PAH, and 24 micron emissions) at 150 pc scales in the circumnuclear ring. In general, we find that the SFR is underestimated (overestimated) by a factor of 2-4 (2-3) using the 11.3 micron PAH (24 micron) emission with respect to the extinction corrected Pa$\alpha$ SFR. The former can be explained because we do not include diffuse PAH emission in our measurements, while the latter might indicate that the dust temperature is particularly warmer in the central regions of NGC1614., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 10 pages, 5 figures

We present an analysis of the nuclear infrared (IR, 1.6 to 18 $\mu$m) emission of the ultraluminous IR galaxy UGC 5101 to derive the properties of its active galactic nucleus (AGN) and its obscuring material. We use new mid-IR high angular resolution ($0.3-0.5$ arcsec) imaging using the Si-2 filter ($\lambda_{C}=8.7\, \mu$m) and $7.5-13$ $\mu$m spectroscopy taken with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. We also use archival HST/NICMOS and Subaru/COMICS imaging and Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy. We estimate the near- and mid-IR unresolved nuclear emission by modelling the imaging data with GALFIT. We decompose the Spitzer/IRS and CC spectra using a power-law component, which represents the emission due to dust heated by the AGN, and a starburst component, both affected by foreground extinction. We model the resulting unresolved near- and mid-IR, and the starburst subtracted CC spectrum with the CLUMPY torus models of Nenkova et al. The derived geometrical properties of the torus, including the large covering factor and the high foreground extinction needed to reproduce the deep $9.7\, \mu$m silicate feature, are consistent with the lack of strong AGN signatures in the optical. We derive an AGN bolometric luminosity $L_{bol}\sim1.9\times10^{45}\,$erg s$^{-1}$ that is in good agreement with other estimates in the literature., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS
