The detailed feeding and feedback mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are not yet well known. For low-luminosity and obscured AGN, as well as late-type galaxies, determining the central black hole (BH) masses is challenging. Our goal with the GATOS sample is to study circum-nuclear regions and better estimate BH masses with more precision than scaling relations offer. Using ALMA's high spatial resolution, we resolve CO(3-2) emissions within ~100 pc around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in seven GATOS galaxies to estimate their BH masses when sufficient gas is present. We study seven bright ($L_{AGN}(14-150\mathrm{keV}) \geq 10^{42}\mathrm{erg/s}$), nearby (<28 Mpc) galaxies from the GATOS core sample. For comparison, we searched the literature for previous BH mass estimates and made additional calculations using the \mbh~ - $\sigma$ relation and the fundamental plane of BH activity. We developed a supervised machine learning method to estimate BH masses from position-velocity diagrams or first-moment maps using ALMA CO(3-2) observations. Numerical simulations with a wide range of parameters created the training, validation, and test sets. Seven galaxies provided enough gas for BH mass estimations: NGC4388, NGC5506, NGC5643, NGC6300, NGC7314, NGC7465, and NGC~7582. Our BH masses, ranging from 6.39 to 7.18 log$(M_{BH}/M_\odot)$, align with previous estimates. Additionally, our machine learning method provides robust error estimations with confidence intervals and offers greater potential than scaling relations. This work is a first step toward an automated \mbh estimation method using machine learning.

Understanding the processes that drive the morphology and kinematics of molecular gas in galaxies is crucial for comprehending star formation and, ultimately, galaxy evolution. Using data obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we study the behavior of the warm molecular gas at temperatures of hundreds of Kelvin and the cold molecular gas at tens of Kelvin in the galaxy MCG$-$05$-$23$-$16, which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of this spheroidal galaxy, classified in the optical as S0, show a dust lane resembling a nuclear spiral and a surrounding ring. These features are also detected in CO(2$-$1) and H2, and their morphologies and kinematics are consistent with rotation plus local inward gas motions along the kinematic minor axis in the presence of a nuclear bar. The H2 transitions 0-0 S(3), 0-0 S(4), and 0-0 S(5), which trace warmer and more excited gas, show more disrupted kinematics than 0-0 S(1) and 0-0 S(2), including clumps of high-velocity dispersion (of up to $\sim$ 160 km/s), in regions devoid of CO(2$-$1). The kinematics of one of these clumps, located at $\sim$ 350 pc westward from the nucleus, are consistent with outflowing gas, possibly driven by localized star formation traced by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 11.3 ${\mu}$m. Overall, we observe a stratification of the molecular gas, with the colder gas located in the nuclear spiral, ring, and connecting arms, while most warmer gas with higher velocity-dispersion fills the inter-arm space. The compact jet, approximately 200 pc in size, detected with Very Large Array (VLA) observations, does not appear to significantly affect the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas, possibly due to its limited intersection with the molecular gas disc., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 2. A new model to follow the complete evolution of a drop in Leidenfrost state is presented in this work. The main ingredients of the phenomenon were considered, including: 1) the shape and weight of a sessile drop, according to its size, compared to the capillary length, using the Young-Laplace equation; 2) the evaporation at the entire surface of the drop, due to the heat transfer across the vapor film, to the proximitiy of a hot plate and to the diffusion in air; 3) the velocity, pressure and temperature fields at the vapor film, between the drop and the hot plate, which are recovered by means of a Hankel transform method, being valid for any size of drops and any thickness of vapor films (below the vapor film stability threshold); 4) an estimation of the thermo-capillary Marangoni convection flow, without simulating numerically the flow within the drop. The aforementioned features were addressed and calculated, in order to include their effect within a single non-linear ODE, describing the temporal evolution of the size of the drop, through the Bond number. Three dimensionless parameters, relating the thermophysical properties of the drop fluid and the surrounding air, control the development of the phenomenon. All those properties were calculated according to the ideal gas approximation and to widely used empirical correlations, without any fitting parameter. The model predictions were compared against experimental results, using different organic and inorganic compounds, for which a good agreement has been found, when no bounce or rotation of the drop spontaneously occurs., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Optoacoustic tomography image reconstruction has been a problem of interest in recent years. By exploiting the exceptional generative power of the recently proposed diffusion models we consider a scheme which is based on a conditional diffusion process. Using a simple initial image reconstruction method such as Delay and Sum, we consider a specially designed autoencoder architecture which generates a latent representation which is used as conditional information in the generative diffusion process. Numerical results show the merits of our proposal in terms of quality metrics such as PSNR and SSIM, showing that the conditional information generated in terms of the initial reconstructed image is able to bias the generative process of the diffusion model in order to enhance the image, correct artifacts and even recover some finer details that the initial reconstruction method is not able to obtain., Comment: Published in 2024 IEEE Biennial Congress of Argentina. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2404.10239

Images are capable of conveying emotions, but emotional experience is highly subjective. Advances in artificial intelligence have enabled the generation of images based on emotional descriptions. However, the level of agreement between the generative images and human emotional responses has not yet been evaluated. To address this, 20 artistic landscapes were generated using StyleGAN2-ADA. Four variants evoking positive emotions (contentment, amusement) and negative emotions (fear, sadness) were created for each image, resulting in 80 pictures. An online questionnaire was designed using this material, in which 61 observers classified the generated images. Statistical analyses were performed on the collected data to determine the level of agreement among participants, between the observer's responses, and the AI-generated emotions. We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of three Seyferts and showcase the intriguing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission characteristics in regions of $\sim 500\,\rm pc$ scales over or around their active galactic nuclei (AGN). Combining the model predictions and the measurements of PAH features and other infrared emission lines, we find that the central regions containing a high fraction of neutral PAHs with small sizes, e.g., those in ESO137-G034, are in highly heated environments, due to collisional shock heating, with hard and moderately intense radiation fields. Such environments are proposed to be associated with inhibited growth or preferential erosion of PAHs, decreasing the average PAH size and the overall abundance of PAHs. We additionally find that the central regions containing a high fraction of ionized PAHs with large sizes, e.g., those in MCG-05-23-016, are likely experiencing severe photo-ionization because of the radiative effects from the radiative shock precursor besides the AGN. The severe photo-ionization can contribute to the ionization of all PAHs and further destruction of small PAHs. Overall, different Seyferts, even different regions in the same galaxy, e.g., those in NGC\,3081, can contain PAH populations of different properties. Specifically, Seyferts that exhibit similar PAH characteristics to ESO137-G034 and MCG-05-23-016 also tend to have similar emission line properties to them, suggesting that the explanations for PAH characteristics of ESO137-G034 and MCG-05-23-016 may also apply generally. Utilizing JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of the kiloparsec scale central regions, we showcase the diversity of ionized gas distributions and kinematics in six nearby Seyfert galaxies included in the GATOS survey. Specifically, we present spatially resolved flux distribution and velocity field maps of six ionized emission lines covering a large range of ionization potentials ($15.8-97.1$ eV). Based on these maps, we showcase the evidence of ionized gas outflows in the six targets, and find some highly disturbed regions in NGC\,5728, NGC\,5506, and ESO137-G034. We propose AGN-driven radio jets plausibly play an important role in triggering these highly disturbed regions. With the outflow rates estimated based on [Ne~{\footnotesize V}] emission, we find the six targets tend to have ionized outflow rates converged to a narrower range than previous finding. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are known to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This paper addresses detection and defence against targeted white-box attacks on speech signals for ASR systems. While existing work has utilised diffusion models (DMs) to purify adversarial examples, achieving state-of-the-art results in keyword spotting tasks, their effectiveness for more complex tasks such as sentence-level ASR remains unexplored. Additionally, the impact of the number of forward diffusion steps on performance is not well understood. In this paper, we systematically investigate the use of DMs for defending against adversarial attacks on sentences and examine the effect of varying forward diffusion steps. Through comprehensive experiments on the Mozilla Common Voice dataset, we demonstrate that two forward diffusion steps can completely defend against adversarial attacks on sentences. Moreover, we introduce a novel, training-free approach for detecting adversarial attacks by leveraging a pre-trained DM. We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS observations of the infrared PAH bands in the nuclear and circumnuclear regions of local AGN from the GATOS Survey. In this work, we examine the PAH properties in the circumnuclear regions of AGN and AGN-outflows, and compare them to those in star-forming regions and the innermost regions of AGN. This study employs 4.9-28.1 micron sub-arcsecond angular resolution data to investigate the properties of PAH in three nearby sources (DL~30-40 Mpc). Our findings align with previous JWST studies, showing that the central regions of AGN show a larger fraction of neutral PAH molecules (i.e. elevated 11.3/6.2 and 11.3/7.7 PAH ratios) compared to star-forming galaxies. We find that the AGN might affect not only the PAH population in the innermost region but also in the extended regions up to ~kpc scales. By comparing our observations to PAH diagnostic diagrams, we find that, in general, regions located in the projected direction of the AGN-outflow occupy similar positions on the PAH diagnostic diagrams as those of the innermost regions of AGN. Star-forming regions that are not affected by the AGN in these galaxies share the same part of the diagram as Star-forming galaxies. We examine the potential of the PAH-H2 diagram to disentangle AGN versus star-forming activity. Our results suggest that in Sy-like AGN, illumination and feedback from the AGN might affect the PAH population at nuclear and kpc scales, in particular, the ionization state of the PAH grains. However, PAH sizes are rather similar. The carriers of the ionized PAH bands (6.2 and 7.7 micron) are less resilience than those of neutral PAH bands (11.3 micron), which might be particularly important for strongly AGN-host coupled systems. Therefore, caution must be applied when using PAH bands as star-formation rate indicators in these systems even at kpc scales, with the ionized ones being more affected by the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 13 Figures

We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. The relative role of electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions in driving the metal-insulator transition in perovskite nickelates opens a rare window into the non-trivial interplay of the two important degrees of freedom in solids. The most promising solution is to extract the electronic and lattice contributions during the phase transition by performing high-resolution spectroscopy measurements. Here, we present a three-dimensional electronic structure study of Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0 and 0.175) thin films with unprecedented accuracy, in which the low energy fermiology has a quantitative agreement with model simulations and first-principles calculations. Two characteristic phonons, the octahedral rotational and breathing modes, are illustrated to be coupled with the electron dynamics in the metallic phase, showing a kink structure along the band dispersion, as well as a hump feature in the energy spectrum. Entering the insulating state, the electron-phonon interaction is amplified by strong electron correlations, transforming the mobile large polarons at high temperatures to localized small polarons in the ground state. Moreover, the analysis of quasiparticle residue enables us to establish a transport-spectroscopy correspondence in Nd1-xSrxNiO3 thin films. Our findings demonstrate the essential role of electron-lattice interaction enhanced by the electronic correlation to stabilize the insulating phase in the perovskite nickelates., Comment: 26 pages, 4 + 7 figures

We use a sample of 64 nearby (D=7-45 Mpc) disk galaxies including 45 AGN and 19 non-AGN, that have high spatial resolution multiline CO observations obtained with the ALMA and/or PdBI arrays to study the distribution of cold molecular gas in their circumunuclear disks (CND). We analyze whether the concentration of cold molecular gas changes as a function of the X-ray luminosity in the 2-10 keV range ($L_{\rm X}$). We also study the concentration of the hot molecular gas using NIR data obtained for the H2 1-0S(1) line. We find a turnover in the distribution of the cold molecular gas concentration as a function of $L_{\rm X}$ with a breakpoint which divides the sample into two branches: the AGN build-up branch ($L_{\rm X}\leq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) and the AGN feedback branch ($L_{\rm X}\geq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) . Lower luminosity AGN and non-AGN of the AGN build-up branch show high cold molecular gas concentrations and centrally peaked radial profiles on nuclear ($r\leq50$~pc) scales. Higher luminosity AGN of the AGN feedback branch, show a sharp decrease in the concentration of molecular gas and flat or inverted radial profiles. The cold molecular gas concentration index ($CCI$), defined as the ratio of surface densities at $r\leq50$~pc and $r\leq200$~pc , namely $CCI \equiv$~log$_{\rm 10}(\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 50}/\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 200}$), spans a factor ~4-5 between the galaxies lying at the high end of the AGN build-up branch and the galaxies of the AGN feedback branch. The concentration and radial distributions of the hot molecular gas in our sample follow less extreme trends as a function of the X-ray luminosity. Spain is one of the eight EU-27 countries that failed to reduce early school leaving (ESL) below 10% in 2020, and now faces the challenge of achieving a rate below 9% by 2030. The determinants of this phenomenon are usually studied using cross-sectional data at the micro-level and without differentiation by gender. In this study, we analyse it for the first time for Spain using panel data (between 2002-2020), taking into account the high regional inequalities at the macroeconomic level and the masculinisation of the phenomenon. The results show a positive relationship between ESL and socioeconomic variables such as the adolescent fertility rate, immigration, unemployment or the weight of the industrial and construction sectors in the regional economy, with significant gender differences that invite us to discuss educational policies. One of the main theoretical challenges in learning dynamical systems from data is providing upper bounds on the generalization error, that is, the difference between the expected prediction error and the empirical prediction error measured on some finite sample. In machine learning, a popular class of such bounds are the so-called Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) bounds. In this paper, we derive a PAC bound for stable continuous-time linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. We present the analysis of publicly available NuSTAR, Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations of the symbiotic recurrent nova T CrB covering the 2006.77-2022.66 yr period. The X-ray spectra are analysed by adopting a model that includes a reflection component produced by the presence of a disk that mimics the accretion disk and the immediate surrounding medium. Our best-fit model requires this disk to have a radius of 1 AU, effective thickness of 0.1 AU, averaged column density 10$^{25}$ cm$^{-2}$ and orientation of 50$^{\circ}$ with respect to the line of sight. This disk is about a factor of two larger than recent estimations for the accretion disk and its presence contributes significantly via reflection to the total X-ray flux detected from T CrB, which naturally produces the emission of the 6.4 keV Fe line. Our analysis suggests that the temperature of the boundary layer evolved from 14.8 keV in the steady-state phase (before 2016), to 2.8 keV in the 2017.24 epoch, to finally stabilise to about $\sim$8 keV in the subsequent epochs. These variations in the plasma temperature of the boundary layer are attributed to the evolution of the mass accretion rate ($\dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}$), which is estimated to have an averaged value of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}$=2.6$\times10^{-8}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ for the current active phase. The presence of emission lines in the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum of 2017.24 prevents from adopting a black body emission model to fit the soft X-ray range. Instead, we use plasma emission models that suggest the presence of adiabatically-shocked gas produced by gas velocities of 110-200 km s$^{-1}$, very likely tracing jet-like ejections similar to what is found in other symbiotic systems. Spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting is one of most commonly used techniques to study the dust properties in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Works implementing this technique commonly use radiative transfer models that assume a variety of dust properties. Despite the key role of this aspect, limited effort has been put forward to explore the chemical composition, the role of different optical properties, and the grain size distribution of dust, all of which can have a substantial impact on the theoretical radiative transfer calculations. In this work, we explore the role of the dust chemical composition in the AGN dusty torus through SED fitting to \emph{Spitzer}/IRS spectra of a sample of 49 nearby AGN with silicate features in emission. We implement a mineralogy model including the popular astronomical silicates and a set of oxides and amorphous silicates with different grain sizes. We find that best fits use principally porous alumina, periclase, and olivine. In terms of mass fractions, $\sim99\%$ of the dust is composed of dust grains of size $\rm{0.1 \mu m}$, with a $<1\%$ contribution from $\rm{3 \mu m}$ grains. Moreover, the astronomical silicates have a very low occurrence in the best fits, suggesting that they are not the most suited dust species to reproduce the silicate features in our sample., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

We present new optical GTC/MEGARA seeing-limited (0.9") integral-field observations of NGC 5506, together with ALMA observations of the CO(3-2) transition at a 0.2" (25 pc) resolution. NGC 5506 is a luminous (bolometric luminosity of $\sim 10^{44}$ erg/s) nearby (26 Mpc) Seyfert galaxy, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We modelled the CO(3-2) kinematics with 3D-Barolo, revealing a rotating and outflowing cold gas ring within the central 1.2 kpc. We derived an integrated cold molecular gas mass outflow rate for the ring of 8 M$_{\odot}$/yr. We fitted the optical emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components to separate rotation from non-circular motions. We detected high [OIII]$\lambda$5007 projected velocities (up to 1000 km/s) at the active galactic nucleus (AGN) position, decreasing with radius to an average 330 km/s around 350 pc. We also modelled the [OIII] gas kinematics with a non-parametric method, estimating the ionisation parameter and electron density in every spaxel, from which we derived an ionised mass outflow rate of 0.076 M$_{\odot}$/yr within the central 1.2 kpc. Regions of high CO(3-2) velocity dispersion, extending to projected distances of 350 pc from the AGN, appear to be the result from the interaction of the AGN wind with molecular gas in the galaxy's disc. Additionally, we find the ionised outflow to spatially correlate with radio and soft X-ray emission in the central kiloparsec. We conclude that the effects of AGN feedback in NGC 5506 manifest as a large-scale ionised wind interacting with the molecular disc, resulting in outflows extending to radial distances of 610 pc, Comment: 24 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysics

The usual approach to classify the ionizing source using optical spectroscopy is based on the use of diagnostic diagrams that compares the relative strength of pairs of collisitional metallic lines (e.g., [O iii] and [N ii]) with respect to recombination hydrogen lines (e.g., H{\beta} and H{\alpha}). Despite of being accepted as the standard procedure, it present known problems, including confusion regimes and/or limitations related to the required signal-to-noise of the involved emission lines. These problems affect not only our intrinsic understanding of inter-stellar medium and its poroperties, but also fundamental galaxy properties, such as the star-formation rate and the oxygen abundance, and key questions just as the fraction of active galactic nuclei, among several others. We explore the existing alternatives in the literature to minimize the confusion among different ionizing sources and proposed a new simple diagram that uses the equivalent width and the velocity dispersion from one single emission line, H{\alpha}, to classify the ionizing sources. We use aperture limited and spatial resolved spectroscopic data in the nearby Universe (z{\sim}0.01) to demonstrate that the new diagram, that we called WHaD, segregates the different ionizing sources in a more efficient way that previously adopted procedures. A new set of regions are defined in this diagram to select betweeen different ionizing sources. The new proposed diagram is well placed to determine the ionizing source when only H{\alpha} is available, or when the signal-to-noise of the emission lines involved in the classical diagnostic diagrams (e.g., H{\beta})., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publishing in A&A

We present MEGARA (Multi-Espectr\'ografo en GTC de Alta Resoluci\'on para Astronom\'ia) Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of 5 local type-2 quasars (QSO2s, z $\sim 0.1$) from the Quasar Feedback (QSOFEED) sample. These active galactic nuclei (AGN) have bolometric luminosities of 10$^{45.5-46}$ erg/s and stellar masses of $\sim$10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$. We explore the kinematics of the ionized gas through the [O~III]$\lambda$5007 $\r{A}$ emission line. The nuclear spectra of the 5 QSO2s, extracted in a circular aperture of $\sim$ 1.2" ($\sim$ 2.2 kpc) in diameter, show signatures of high velocity winds in the form of broad (full width at half maximum; 1300$\leq$FWHM$\leq$2240 km/s and blueshifted components. We find that 4 out of the 5 QSO2s present outflows that we can resolve with our seeing-limited data, and they have radii ranging from 3.1 to 12.6 kpc. In the case of the two QSO2s with extended radio emission, we find that it is well-aligned with the outflows, suggesting that low-power jets might be compressing and accelerating the ionized gas in these radio-quiet QSO2s. In the four QSO2s with spatially resolved outflows, we measure ionized mass outflow rates of 3.3-6.5 Msun/yr when we use [S~II]-based densities, and of 0.7-1.6 Msun/yr when trans-auroral line-based densities are considered instead. We compare them with the corresponding molecular mass outflow rates (8 - 16 Msun/yr), derived from CO(2-1) ALMA observations at 0.2" resolution. Both phases show lower outflow mass rates than those expected from observational scaling relations where uniform assumptions on the outflow properties were adopted. This might be indicating that the AGN luminosity is not the only driver of massive outflows and/or that these relations need to be re-scaled using accurate outflow properties. We use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of a sample of six local obscured type 1.9/2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) to compare their nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with the level of nuclear obscuration traced by X-rays. This study is the first to use sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local obscured AGN to investigate the nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 $\mu$m). All the nuclei show the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate band in absorption. We compare the strength of the 9.7 and 18 $\mu$m silicate features with torus model predictions. The observed silicate features are generally well explained by clumpy and smooth torus models. We report the detection of the 6 $\mu$m dirty water ice band (i.e., a mix of water and other molecules such as CO and CO$_2$) at sub-arcsecond scales ($\sim$0.26 arcsec at 6 $\mu$m; inner $\sim$50 pc) in a sample of local AGN with different levels of nuclear obscuration in the range log N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim22-25$. We find a good correlation between the 6 $\mu$m water ice optical depths and N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$. This result indicates that the water ice absorption might be a reliable tracer of the nuclear intrinsic obscuration in AGN. The weak water ice absorption in less obscured AGN (log N$_H^{X-ray}$ (cm$^{-2}$)$\lesssim$23.0 cm$^{-2}$) might be related to the hotter dust temperature ($>$T$_{sub}^{H_2O}\sim$110 K) expected to be reached in the outer layers of the torus due to their more inhomogeneous medium. Our results suggest it might be necessary to include the molecular content, such as, H$_2$O, aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH-) and more complex PAH molecules in torus models to better constrain key parameters such as the torus covering factor (i.e. nuclear obscuration)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 12 Figures

Above $\sim$3 keV, the X-ray spectrum of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) is characterized by the intrinsic continuum and compton reflection features. For type-1 AGN, several regions could contribute to the reflection. In order to investigate the nature of the reflecting medium, we perform a systematic analysis of the reflector using XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of a sample of 22 type-1 AGN. We create a baseline model which includes Galactic absorption and an intrinsically absorbed power-law plus a reflection model. We test a set of nine reflection models in a sub-sample of five objects. Based on these results, we select three models to be tested on the entire sample, accounting for distinct physical scenarios: neutral/distant reflection, ionized/relativistic reflection, and neutral/distant+ionized/relativistic reflection, namely hybrid model. We find that 18 sources require the reflection component to fit their spectra. Among them, 67$\%$ prefer the hybrid model. Neutral and ionized models are equally preferred by three sources. We conclude that both the neutral/distant reflector most probably associated with the inner edges of the torus and the ionized/relativistic reflector associated with the accretion disk are required to describe the reflection in type-1 AGN.

We present a polarization variability analysis of a sample of 26 $\gamma$-ray blazars monitored by the Steward Observatory between 2008 and 2018 in the optical band. We investigate the properties and long-term variability of their optical polarization, searching for differences between blazar types. We observe that BL Lac objects are typically less polarized and less variable than flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Moreover, BL Lacs display a distribution of their polarization angle typically oriented in a preferential direction, contrary to the rather random distribution of FSRQs. For the latter blazar type, as well as those sources showing a bright stellar emission, we take into account the depolarizing effect introduced by the broad line region and the host galaxy on the measured polarization degree. In this sample we also observe that BL Lacs present an uncorrelated evolution of the flux and the polarization. Contrary, FSRQs show a correlation before the depolarization correction, that is lost however after considering this effect. In addition, we study the behaviour of the polarization angle, searching for angle rotations in its long-term evolution. We derive that the FSRQs studied here show rotations more frequently than BL Lac objects by a factor $\sim$1.5. During these periods we also observe a systematic decrease of the polarization fraction, as well as a marginal flux increase, not significant however to connect rotations with optical flares. We interpret these results within the extended shock-in-jet scenario, able to explain the overall features observed here for the polarization of the blazar sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

A potent class of generative models known as Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) has become prominent. A forward diffusion process adds gradually noise to data, while a model learns to gradually denoise. Sampling from pre-trained DPMs is obtained by solving differential equations (DE) defined by the learnt model, a process which has shown to be prohibitively slow. Numerous efforts on speeding-up this process have consisted on crafting powerful ODE solvers. Despite being quick, such solvers do not usually reach the optimal quality achieved by available slow SDE solvers. Our goal is to propose SDE solvers that reach optimal quality without requiring several hundreds or thousands of NFEs to achieve that goal. We propose Stochastic Explicit Exponential Derivative-free Solvers (SEEDS), improving and generalizing Exponential Integrator approaches to the stochastic case on several frameworks. After carefully analyzing the formulation of exact solutions of diffusion SDEs, we craft SEEDS to analytically compute the linear part of such solutions. Inspired by the Exponential Time-Differencing method, SEEDS use a novel treatment of the stochastic components of solutions, enabling the analytical computation of their variance, and contains high-order terms allowing to reach optimal quality sampling $\sim3$-$5\times$ faster than previous SDE methods. We validate our approach on several image generation benchmarks, showing that SEEDS outperform or are competitive with previous SDE solvers. Contrary to the latter, SEEDS are derivative and training free, and we fully prove strong convergence guarantees for them., Comment: 60 pages. Fits the infrared spectra from the nuclear regions of AGN can place constraints on the dust properties, distribution, and geometry by comparison with models. However, none of the currently available models fully describe the observations of AGN currently available. Among the aspects least explored, here we focus on the role of dust grain size. We offer the community a new spectral energy distribution (SED) library, hereinafter [GoMar23] model, which is based on the two-phase torus model developed before with the inclusion of the grain size as a model parameter, parameterized by the maximum grain size Psize or equivalently the mass-weighted average grain size < P >. We created 691,200 SEDs using the SKIRT code, where the maximum grain size can vary within the range Psize = 0.01 - 10.0um ( < P >= 0.007 - 3.41um). We fit this new and several existing libraries to a sample of 68 nearby and luminous AGNs with Spitzer/IRS spectra dominated by AGN-heated dust. We find that the [GoMar23] model can adequately reproduce up to 85-88% of the spectra. The dust grain size parameter significantly improves the final fit in up to 90% of these spectra. Statistical tests indicate that the grain size is the third most important parameter in the fitting procedure (after the size and half opening angle of the torus). The requirement of a foreground extinction by our model is lower compared to purely clumpy models. We find that 41% of our sample requires that the maximum dust grain size is as large as Psize =10um (< P >= 3.41um). Nonetheless, we also remark that disk+wind and clumpy torus models are still required to reproduce the spectra of a non-negligible fraction of objects, suggesting the need for several dust geometries to explain the infrared continuum of AGN. We present the analysis of archival XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of CH Cyg, one of the most studied symbiotic stars (SySts). The combination of the high-resolution XMM-Newton RGS and Chandra HETG X-ray spectra allowed us to obtain reliable estimates of the chemical abundances and to corroborate the presence of multi-temperature X-ray-emitting gas. Spectral fitting of the medium-resolution XMM-Newton MOS (MOS1+MOS2) spectrum required the use of an additional component not seen in previous studies in order to fit the 2.0-4.0 keV energy range. Detailed spectral modelling of the XMM-Newton MOS data suggests the presence of a reflection component, very similar to that found in active galactic nuclei. The reflection component is very likely produced by an ionised disk (the accretion disk around the white dwarf) and naturally explains the presence of the fluorescent Fe emission line at 6.4 keV while also contributing to the soft and medium energy ranges. The variability of the global X-ray properties of CH Cyg are discussed as well as the variation of the three Fe lines around the 6-7 keV energy range. In this work we present the first application of software-defined optoelectronics (SDO) for bidimensional optoacoustic tomography (OAT). The SDO concept refers to optoelectronic systems where the functionality associated with the conditioning and processing of optical and electrical signals are digitally implemented and controlled by software. This paradigm takes advantage of the flexibility of software-defined hardware platforms to develop adaptive instrumentation systems. We implement an OAT system based on a heterodyne interferometer in a Mach-Zehnder configuration and a commercial software-defined radio platform (SDR). Here the SDR serves as a function generator and oscilloscope at the same time providing perfect carrier synchronization between its transmitter and receiver in a coherent baseband modulator scheme. Therefore, the carrier synchronization enables us to have a much better phase recovery. We study the performance of the OAT SDO system by means of different bidimensional phantoms and the analysis of the reconstructed images., Comment: Published in Applied Optics

Image reconstruction in optoacoustic tomography (OAT) is a trending learning task highly dependent on measured physical magnitudes present at sensing time. The large number of different settings, and also the presence of uncertainties or partial knowledge of parameters, can lead to reconstructions algorithms that are specifically tailored and designed to a particular configuration which could not be the one that will be ultimately faced in a final practical situation. Being able to learn reconstruction algorithms that are robust to different environments (e.g. the different OAT image reconstruction settings) or invariant to such environments is highly valuable because it allows to focus on what truly matters for the application at hand and discard what are considered spurious features. In this work we explore the use of deep learning algorithms based on learning invariant and robust representations for the OAT inverse problem. In particular, we consider the application of the ANDMask scheme due to its easy adaptation to the OAT problem. Numerical experiments are conducted showing that, when out-of-distribution generalization (against variations in parameters such as the location of the sensors) is imposed, there is no degradation of the performance and, in some cases, it is even possible to achieve improvements with respect to standard deep learning approaches where invariance robustness is not explicitly considered., Comment: paper accepted for publication in Review Scientific Instruments

A complete demographic of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is essential to understand the evolution of the Universe. Optical surveys estimate the population of AGN in the local Universe to be of $\sim$ 4%. However, these results could be biased towards bright sources, not affected by the host galaxy attenuation. An alternative method for detecting these objects is through the X-ray emission. In this work, we aim to complement the AGN population of the optical CALIFA survey (941 sources), by using X-ray data from Chandra, which provides the best spatial resolution to date, essential to isolate the nuclear emission from the host galaxy. We study a total of 138 sources with available data. We find 34 new bonafide AGN and 23 AGN candidates, which could increase the AGN population to 7-10\% among the CALIFA survey. X-rays are particularly useful for low-luminosity AGN since they are excluded by the criterion of large equivalent width of the $H\alpha$ emission line when applied to optical selections. Indeed, placing such a restrictive criteria might cause a loss of up to 70% of AGN sources. X-ray detected sources are preferentially located in the right side of the [$OIII$]/$H\beta$ versus [$NII$]/$H\alpha$ diagram, suggesting that this diagram might be the most reliable at classifying AGN sources. NBA team managers and owners try to acquire high-performing players. An important consideration in these decisions is how well the new players will perform in combination with their teammates. Our objective is to identify elite five-person lineups, which we define as those having a positive plus-minus per minute (PMM). Using individual player order statistics, our model can identify an elite lineup even if the five players in the lineup have never played together, which can inform player acquisition decisions, salary negotiations, and real-time coaching decisions. We combine seven classification tools into a unanimous consent classifier (all-or-nothing classifier, or ANC) in which a lineup is predicted to be elite only if all seven classifiers predict it to be elite. In this way, we achieve high positive predictive value (i.e., precision), the likelihood that a lineup classified as elite will indeed have a positive PMM. We train and test the model on individual player and lineup data from the 2017-18 season and use the model to predict the performance of lineups drawn from all 30 NBA teams' 2018-19 regular season rosters. Mrk 477 is the closest type-2 quasar (QSO2), at a distance of 163 Mpc. This makes it an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay between nuclear activity and star formation with a great level of detail and signal-to-noise. In this Letter we present new mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopic data with an angular resolution of 0.4 arcsec (~300 pc) obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) instrument CanariCam. The N-band (8-13 micron) spectrum of the central ~400 pc of the galaxy reveals [S IV]10.51 micron emission, but no 8.6 or 11.3 micron PAH features, which are commonly used as tracers of recent star formation. This is in stark contrast with the presence of a nuclear starburst of ~300 pc in size, an age of 6 Myr, and a mass of 1.1x10^8 Msun, as constrained from ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope observations. Considering this, we argue that even the more resilient, neutral molecules that mainly produce the 11.3 micron PAH band are most likely being destroyed in the vicinity of the active nucleus despite the relatively large X-ray column density, of log N_H=23.5 cm^-2, and modest X-ray luminosity, of 1.5x10^43 erg/s. This highlights the importance of being cautious when using PAH features as star formation tracers in the central region of galaxies to evaluate the impact of feedback from active galactic nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. An interesting feature in active galactic nuclei (AGN) accreting at low rate is the weakness of the reflection features in their X-ray spectra, which can result from the gradual disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. It has been suggested that low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) would have a different reflector configuration compared with high luminosity AGN, either covering a smaller fraction of the sky or simply having less material. Additionally, we note that the determination of the spectral index ($\Gamma$) and the cut-off energy of the primary power-law emission is affected by the inclusion of reflection models, showing the importance of using them to study the accretion mechanism, especially in the case of the LLAGN that have previously shown a high dispersion on the relation between $\Gamma$ and the accretion rate. Our purpose is to constrain the geometry and column density of the reflector in a sample of LLAGN covering a broad X-ray range of energy combining data from XMM-Newton + NuSTAR + Swift of a hard X-ray-flux limited sample of 17 LLAGN from BASS/DR2 with accretion rates $\lambda_{Edd}$=L$_{\rm Bol}$/L$_{\rm Edd}$<10$^{-3}$. We fit all spectra using the reflection model for torus (borus02) and accretion disk (Xillver) reflectors. We found a tentative correlation between the torus column density and the accretion rate, LLAGN shows a lower column density compared with the high-luminosity objects. We also confirm the relation between $\Gamma$ and $\lambda_{Edd}$, with a smaller scatter than previously reported, thanks to the inclusion of high-energy data and the reflection models. Our results are consistent with a break at $\lambda_{Edd}\sim10^{-3}$, suggestive of a different accretion mechanism compared with higher accretion AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

In this paper we consider the problem of image reconstruction in optoacoustic tomography. In particular, we devise a deep neural architecture that can explicitly take into account the band-frequency information contained in the sinogram. This is accomplished by two means. First, we jointly use a linear filtered back-projection method and a fully dense UNet for the generation of the images corresponding to each one of the frequency bands considered in the separation. Secondly, in order to train the model, we introduce a special loss function consisting of three terms: (i) a separating frequency bands term; (ii) a sinogram-based consistency term and (iii) a term that directly measures the quality of image reconstruction and which takes advantage of the presence of ground-truth images present in training dataset. Numerical experiments show that the proposed model, which can be easily trainable by standard optimization methods, presents an excellent generalization performance quantified by a number of metrics commonly used in practice. We present a statistical analysis of the properties of the obscuring material around active galactic nuclei (AGN). This study represents the first of its kind for an ultra-hard X-ray (14-195keV; Swift/BAT) volume-limited (DL<40 Mpc) sample of 24 Seyfert (Sy) galaxies (BCS40 sample) using high angular resolution infrared data and various torus models: smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus models and clumpy disc+wind models. We find that the smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus models (i.e. without including the polar dusty wind component) and disc+wind models provide best fits for a comparable number of galaxies, 8/24 (33.3%) and 9/24 (37.5%), respectively. We find that the best-fitted models depend on the hydrogen column density (NH), which is related to the X-ray (unobscured/obscured) and/or optical (Sy1/Sy2) classification. In particular, smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus models best reproduce the infrared (IR) emission of AGN with relatively high hydrogen column density (median value of log (NH)=23.5+-0.8; i.e. Sy2). However, clumpy disc+wind models provide the best fits to the nuclear IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Sy1/1.8/1.9 (median value of log (NH)=21.0+-1.0), specifically in the near-IR (NIR) range. The success of the disc+wind models in fitting the NIR emission of Sy1 galaxies is due to the combination of adding large graphite grains to the dust composition and self-obscuration effects caused by the wind at intermediate inclinations. In general, we find that the Seyfert galaxies having unfavourable (favourable) conditions, i.e. nuclear hydrogen column density and Eddington ratio, for launching IR dusty polar outflows are best-fitted with smooth, clumpy and two-phase torus (disk+wind) models confirming the predictions from simulations. We have studied the nuclear region of the previously detected dual AGN system in the galaxy pair IRAS 05589+2828 and 2MASX J06021107+2828382 through new optical spectroscopy observations, along with radio and X-ray archival data. Our multiwavelength data strongly suggest that the Sy1 \iras\, (z=0.0330$\pm$0.0002) conforms to a dual AGN system with the Sy2 \twomas\, (z=0.0334$\pm$0.0001) with a projected separation obtained from the radio data of 20.08\arcsec\, ($\sim$13.3\,kpc). Analysis of the optical spectra reveals a faint narrow extended emission from H$\alpha$ and [OIII] amidst the two AGN, supporting evidence for an ongoing merger. \iras\, is a double component narrow emission line AGN, with complex broad Balmer emission line profiles that clearly show a strong red-peaklet with a velocity shift of $\sim$3500\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The black hole mass estimates of \iras\, and \twomas\, are log\,M$\rm_{BH}$\,=\,8.59\,$\pm$\,0.14 (M$_\odot$) and log\,M$\rm_{BH}$\,=\,8.21$\pm$0.2 (M$_\odot$), respectively. In the X-ray bands, \iras\, is compatible with a Type 1 object, showing both spectral and flux variability. \chandra\, data of 2MASX\,J06021107+2828382 allowed us to measure a high hardness ratio in this source, providing evidence for a Type 2 AGN. The 22 GHz image obtained with the {\it Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array} has revealed that both AGN are compact radio objects with spectral indices -0.26$\pm$0.03 and -0.70$\pm$0.11, confirming for the first time its dual AGN nature in the radio bands., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 20 pages, 15 figures

In this paper, we report the novel experimental observation of both unstable and stable Toroidicity-induced Alfv\'en Eigenmodes (TAEs) measured simultaneously in a JET tokamak plasma. The three-ion-heating scheme (D-DNBI-3He) is employed to accelerate deuterons to MeV energies, thereby destabilizing TAEs with toroidal mode numbers n = 3-5, each decreasing in mode amplitude. At the same time, the Alfv\'en Eigenmode Active Diagnostic resonantly excites a stable n = 6 TAE with total normalized damping rate $-\gamma/\omega_0 \approx$ 1%-4%. Hybrid kinetic-MHD modeling with codes NOVA-K and MEGA both find eigenmodes with similar frequencies, mode structures, and radial locations as in experiment. NOVA-K demonstrates good agreement with the n = 3, 4, and 6 TAEs, matching the damping rate of the n = 6 mode within uncertainties and identifying radiative damping as the dominant contribution. Improved agreement is found with MEGA for all modes: the unstable n = 3-5 and stable n = 2, 6 modes, with the latter two stabilized by higher intrinsic damping and lower fast ion drive, respectively. While some discrepancies remain to be resolved, this unique validation effort gives us confidence in TAE stability predictions for future fusion devices.

We investigate the problems and challenges of evaluating the robustness of Differential Equation-based (DE) networks against synthetic distribution shifts. We propose a novel and simple accuracy metric which can be used to evaluate intrinsic robustness and to validate dataset corruption simulators. We also propose methodology recommendations, destined for evaluating the many faces of neural DEs' robustness and for comparing them with their discrete counterparts rigorously. We then use this criteria to evaluate a cheap data augmentation technique as a reliable way for demonstrating the natural robustness of neural ODEs against simulated image corruptions across multiple datasets., Comment: Accepted at ICLM 2022 Workshop "PODS"

Quantum communication has seen rapid progress towards practical large-scale networks, with quantum key distribution (QKD) spearheading this development. While fibre based systems have been shown to be well suited for metropolitan scales, suitable fibre infrastructure may not always be in place. Here, we make the case for an entanglement-based free-space quantum network as a practical and efficient alternative for metropolitan applications. We developed a deployable free space QKD system and demonstrated its use in realistic scenarios. For a representative 1.7-km free-space link, we showcase its ad hoc deployability and achieve secure key rates of up to 5.7 kbps, with 2.5 kbps in direct noon sunlight. By extrapolating experimental data, we show that kbps key rates are achievable even for 10-km distances and multi-user scenarios. We anticipate that our work will establish free space networks as a viable solution for metropolitan applications and an indispensable complementary building block in the future global quantum internet., Comment: Expanded analysis, improved plots, added information that further supports our claims; results unchanged

In this paper we show that neural ODE analogs of recurrent (ODE-RNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (ODE-LSTM) networks can be algorithmically embeddeded into the class of polynomial systems. This embedding preserves input-output behavior and can suitably be extended to other neural DE architectures. We then use realization theory of polynomial systems to provide necessary conditions for an input-output map to be realizable by an ODE-LSTM and sufficient conditions for minimality of such systems. These results represent the first steps towards realization theory of recurrent neural ODE architectures, which is is expected be useful for model reduction and learning algorithm analysis of recurrent neural ODEs., Comment: 10 pages.
