Given two continuous random variables, X and Y, we study the relationship between their statistical dependence and the Young tableau of the permutation defined from the graph of a bivariate sample coming from (X, Y). From a sample of size n of (X, Y), we identify the Young tableau of the permutation which maps the ranks of the X observations on the ranks of the Y observations. Procedures to detect statistical dependence between pairs of random variables, based on statistics calculated on the permutation defined by the graph of a bivariate sample have been developed, see García and González-López (2020) [Symmetry 12, 9, 1415. https://doi.org/10.3390/sym12091415] and García and González-López (2014) [J Multivar Anal 127, 126–146. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmva.2014.02.010]. In those papers, the information used is the length of the longest increasing (decreasing) subsequence, identified as the first line (the first column) of the Young tableau of the permutation. In this paper, we expose the information captured by the shape of the Young tableau of the permutation.

In this paper, we introduce a method to construct copulas. The method is based on combining the partial derivatives of two copulas. We prove that the proposed method provides a copula. Then, we exemplify the application of the method in several cases, illustrating the versatility of the method. We also prove that using copulas from the family introduced in Rodríguez-Lallena and Úbeda-Flores (2004) [Stat Probab Lett 66, 3, 315–325. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.spl.2003.09.010], the method provides a copula inside that family.

This paper extends the concept of metrics based on the Bayesian information criterion (BIC), to achieve strongly consistent estimation of partition Markov models (PMMs). We introduce a set of metrics drawn from the family of model selection criteria known as efficient determination criteria (EDC). This generalization extends the range of options available in BIC for penalizing the number of model parameters. We formally specify the relationship that determines how EDC works when selecting a model based on a threshold associated with the metric. Furthermore, we improve the penalty options within EDC, identifying the penalty ln (ln (n)) as a viable choice that maintains the strongly consistent estimation of a PMM. To demonstrate the utility of these new metrics, we apply them to the modeling of three DNA sequences of dengue virus type 3, endemic in Brazil in 2023. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statistics - Methodology - Abstract
We propose a new nonparametric test for the supposition of independence between two continuous random variables. The test is based on the size of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation. We identified the independence assumption between the two continuous variables with the space of permutation equipped with the uniform distribution and we show the exact distribution of the statistic. We calculate the distribution for several sample sizes. Through a simulation study we estimate the power of our test for diverse alternative hypothesis under the null hypothesis of independence., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

In this article, we define consumers’ profiles of electricity who commit fraud. We also compare these profiles with users’ profiles not classified as fraudsters in order to determine which of these clients should receive an inspection. We present a statistically consistent method to classify clients/users as fraudsters or not, according to the profiles of previously identified fraudsters. We show that it is possible to use several characteristics to inspect the classification of fraud; those aspects are represented by the coding performed in the observed series of clients/users. In this way, several encodings can be used, and the client risk can be constructed to integrate complementary aspects. We show that the classification method has success rates that exceed 77%, which allows us to infer confidence in the methodology.

In this paper, we combine two statistical tools with the objective of creating models that represent the dependence between (i) the proportion of the black/brown population in relation to the total population of a neighborhood (pct) and (ii) the average age at which people died in the neighborhood (age). We explore the dependence between pct and age in São Paulo city, Brazil, during 2018. The statistical tools are models of copulas and informative and non-informative settings according to the Bayesian perspective. The different scenarios and models allow us to delineate the dependence between pct and age, and, through the Bayesian Information Criterion we can indicate which of these models best represents the data. The approach implemented here allows us to define estimates of variations in life expectancy conditioned by percentage intervals of pct. With them, we can conclude that on average all the scenarios point to a decrease in life expectancy by increasing the proportion of pct. When conditioning the percentages of pct to 4 intervals (0, 0.25], (0.25, 0.5], (0.5, 0.75], (0.75, 1] respectively, we note that the expectation is reduced in average at a constant rate from one interval in comparison with the immediate and next interval from left to right in [0, 1].

In this article, we model the dependence between dam factor and D max, where dam factor is an indicator of risk of a tailings dam failure, which involves the height H of the tailings dam, the volume of material housed by the tailings dam VT and the volume dispensed by the tailings dam, VF, when the dam breaks. And, Dmax is the maximum distance traveled by the material released by the tailings dam, after the collapse. With the dependence found via copula models and Bayesian estimation, given a range of dam factor, we estimate the probability of the released material to exceed a certain threshold. Since the dam factor involves the released volume VF (unknown before the dam break), we present a naive way to estimate it using VT and H. In this way, it is possible to estimate the dam factor of a tailings dam and with such a value to identify the probability of the tailings dam to show a Dmax that exceeds a certain threshold.

In this paper, we investigate a specific structure within the theoretical framework of Partition Markov Models (PMM) [see García Jesús and González-López, Entropy 19, 160 (2017)]. The structure of interest lies in the formulation of the underlying partition, which defines the process, in which, in addition to a finite memory o associated with the process, a parameter G is introduced, allowing an extra dependence on the past complementing the dependence given by the usual memory o. We show, by simulations, how algorithms designed for the classic version of the PMM can have difficulties in recovering the structure investigated here. This specific structure is efficient for modeling a complete genome sequence, coming from the newly decoded Coronavirus Covid-19 in humans [see Wu et al., Nature 579, 265–269 (2020)]. The sequence profile is represented by 13 units (parts of the state space’s partition), for each of the 13 units, their respective transition probabilities are computed for any element of the genetic alphabet. Also, the structure proposed here allows us to develop a comparison study with other genomic sequences of Coronavirus, collected in the last 25 years, through which we conclude that Covid-19 is shown next to SARS-like Coronaviruses (SL-CoVs) from bats specimens in Zhoushan [see Hu et al., Emerg Microb Infect 7, 1–10 (2018)].

We build a profile of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by means of genomic sequences obtained from patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We consider a set of sequences coming from the NCBI free source and we assume that this set is a collection of independent samples of stochastic processes related by an equivalence relation. Given a collection {(Xjt)t∈ℤ}pj=1 { ( X t j ) t ∈ Z } j = 1 p $ \{({X}_t^j{)}_{t\in \mathbb{Z}}{\}}_{j=1}^p$ of p independent discrete time Markov processes with finite alphabet A and state space S, we state that the elements (i, s) and (j, r) in {1, 2,…, p} × S are equivalent if and only if they share the same transition probability for all the elements in the alphabet. The equivalence allows to reduce the number of parameters to be estimated in the model avoiding to delete states of S to achieve that reduction. Through the equivalence relationship, we build the global profile for all the EBV in NPC sequences, this model allows us to represent the underlying and common stochastic law of the set of sequences. The equivalence classes define an optimal partition of {1, 2,…, p} × S, and it is in relation to this partition that we define the profile of the set of genomic sequences.

In this paper we investigate the consistency of quality indicators of the Brazilian public educational system. According to the newspaper Estado de São Paulo – Brazil, of January 18, 2017, only 7.3% of students in the third year of high school have an adequate level of mathematics, this shows the relevance of the evaluation and assessment of the Brazilian educational system. In this paper we explore the dependence between two indicators: (i) mean value between the proportions (in two subjects: Portuguese and Mathematics) of students under the basic level (SARESP classification) and (ii) rate of fails, during the years 2013, 2014 and 2015. (i) and (ii) are bases to define the educational quality of public schools for the population of young people, between 14 and 17 years old. This inspection is carried out through the Bayesian estimation of the parameters of the Asymmetric Cubic Sections (ACS) copula. We show that the dependence profile, year after year, behaves in a very unstable way, although during those years there were no substantial changes which justify such instability. Through the copula we compute conditional probabilities of tail events. We verify that an inversion occurred in the concordance/discordance between (i) and (ii). We compute the probability of (i) assuming high values, conditioned to a threshold in (ii). In 2013, as the threshold in (ii) increases the probability increases (concordance), in 2014 the threshold in (ii) is almost irrelevant to the probability and in 2015, as the threshold in (ii) increases the probability decreases (discordance). The inspection of the tail dependence allows to expose some kind of manipulation, in view of for instance, the maintenance of a global index índice de desenvolvimento da educação de São Paulo (IDESP) used to classify the educational institutions.

In this paper, we estimate tail conditional probabilities by incorporating copula models and adopting a Bayesian estimation process for the copula’s parameter. Based on the records of student’s classifications in (a) Mathematics and (b) Natural Sciences/Physics (of the entrance exam to the University of Campinas, from 2013 to 2015), by means of tail conditional probabilities we predict the performance, of the same students, in Calculus I which is a mandatory subject of the undergraduate course of Statistics, and we compare the conditional probabilities year after year. We see that (a), (b) and Calculus I show maximal trivariate correlations in tail events given by classifications which are jointly high/low in the three subjects. We compare the evolution of the tail conditional probabilities from 2013 to 2015 and, according to our results there has been an improvement (from 2013 to 2015) of at most 12%. This improvement being more incisive in the settings with conditional events given by jointly high classifications in comparison with settings with conditional events given by jointly lower classifications.

In this paper, we classify by representativeness the elements of a set of complete genomic sequences of Dengue Virus Type 1 (DENV-1), corresponding to the outbreak in Japan during 2014. The set is coming from four regions: Chiba, Hyogo, Shizuoka and Tokyo. We consider this set as composed of independent samples coming from Markovian processes of finite order and finite alphabet. Under the assumption of the existence of a law that prevails in at least 50% of the samples of the set, we identify the sequences governed by the predominant law (see [1, 2]). The rule of classification is based on a local metric between samples, which tends to zero when we compare sequences of identical law and tends to infinity when comparing sequences with different laws. We found that the order of representativeness, from highest to lowest and according to the origin of the sequences is: Tokyo, Chiba, Hyogo, and Shizuoka. When comparing the Japanese sequences with their contemporaries from Asia, we find that the less representative sequence (from Shizuoka) is positioned in groups considerably far away from that which includes the sequences from the other regions in Japan, this offers evidence to suppose that the outbreak in Japan could be produced by more than one type of DENV-1.

MARKOV processes ,ORDER picking systems ,INFINITY (Mathematics) - Abstract
In this paper, we propose a procedure of selecting samples from a set of samples coming from Markovian processes of finite order and finite alphabet. Under the assumption of the existence of a law that prevails in at least q% of the samples of the collection, we show that the procedure allows to identify samples governed by the predominant law. The approach is based on a local metric between samples, which tends to zero when we compare samples of identical law and tends to infinity when comparing samples with different laws. The local metric allows to define a criterion which takes arbitrarily large values when the previous assumption about the existence of a predominant law does not hold. By means of this procedure, we map similarities and dissimilarities of some Brazilian stocks' daily trading volume dynamic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A family of conjugated distributions for a given type of copulas is defined in this paper. Those copulas can be written as a mixture of d-dimensional parameter exponential functions. The generalized Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern copula is an example of this representation. This family is used to illustrate the estimation technique with real data. Also, the applicability of Bayesian predictive approach is shown in an education policy issue by defining goals for the number of students per class that leads to improve their performance at school. In the framework of coding theory, under the assumption of a Markov process (X t) on a finite alphabet A , the compressed representation of the data will be composed of a description of the model used to code the data and the encoded data. Given the model, the Huffman's algorithm is optimal for the number of bits needed to encode the data. On the other hand, modeling (X t) through a Partition Markov Model (PMM) promotes a reduction in the number of transition probabilities needed to define the model. This paper shows how the use of Huffman code with a PMM reduces the number of bits needed in this process. We prove the estimation of a PMM allows for estimating the entropy of (X t) , providing an estimator of the minimum expected codeword length per symbol. We show the efficiency of the new methodology on a simulation study and, through a real problem of compression of DNA sequences of SARS-CoV-2, obtaining in the real data at least a reduction of 10.4%. STRESS (Linguistics) ,SYLLABLE (Grammar) ,PORTUGUESE language ,BRAZILIANS ,LEXICAL grammar - Abstract
This paper investigates whether values of acoustical correlates of pretonic syllables adjacent to the one(s) perceived as bearing secondary stress could predict such perception in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) data. In order to pursue this goal, a comparison is made between pretonic syllables perceived as bearing secondary stress and those perceived as not bearing it. According to the results, obtained by application of statistical analyses, it is possible to claim that variation in intensity and in F
0 in syllables perceived as bearing secondary stress, as well as in adjacent syllables, can be taken as a robust correlate for data perception regarding secondary stress placement in BP. Variation in intensity and in F0 in syllables perceived as bearing secondary stress and variation in intensity and in F0 in the other adjacent pretonic syllables seem to be complementary information for the perception of secondary stresses by BP speakers. The results point to relevant questions for further work concerning the rhythmic and intonational organization of Brazilian Portuguese. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Abstract: We begin this work presenting a brief introduction to the extreme value theory, specifically studying the behavior of the random variable which represents the maximum of a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. We see that the Extremal Types Theorem (or Fisher-Tippett Theorem) is a fundamental tool in the study of the asymptotic behavior of those maxima, allowing the modeling of data which represent a sequence of maxima observations of a given phenomenon or random process, through a class of distributions known as Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) family. We are interested in making inference about the parameters of this family. Specifically, the comparison between the Gumbel and GEV models constitute the main focus of this work. In Chapter 1 we study, in the context of classical inference, the method of maximum likelihood estimation for these parameters and likelihood ratio test procedure suitable for testing the null hypothesis associated to the Gumbel model against the hypothesis that represents the complete GEV model. We proceed, in Chapter 2, with a brief review on Bayesian inference theory. We also studied the predictive distribution for future values. With respect to the comparison of models, we initially study the Bayes factor and the posterior Bayes factor, in the Bayesian context. Next we study the Full Bayesian Significance Test (FBST), a significance test particularly suitable to test precise hypotheses, such as the hypothesis characterizing the Gumbel model. Furthermore, we study two other criteria for comparing models, the BIC (Bayesian Information Criterion) and the DIC (Deviance Information Criterion). We study the evidence measures specifically in the context of the comparison between the Gumbel and GEV models, as well as the predictive distribution, beyond the credible intervals and posterior inference to the return levels associated with fixed return periods. Chapter 1 and part of Chapter 2 provide the basic theoretical foundations of this work, and are strongly based on Coles (2001) and O'Hagan (1994). In Chapter 3 we present the well-known Metropolis-Hastings algorithm for simulation of probability distributions, and the particular algorithm used in this work to obtain simulated samples from the posterior distribution for the parameters of interest. In the next chapter we formulate the modeling of the observed data of maximum, presenting the likelihood function and setting the prior distribution for the parameters. Two applications are presented in Chapter 5. The first one deals with observations of the quarterly maximum for unemployment rates in the United States of America, between the first quarter of 1994 and first quarter of 2009. In the second application we studied the semiannual maximum of sea levels at Newlyn, in southwest of England, between 1990 and 2007. Finally, a brief discussion is presented in Chapter 6. Entre as conclusões damos destaque à falta de coerência percebida na dependência entre dois componentes do IDESP que por uma visão simplista deveriam ser concordantes, mas apresentam resultados que destoam do esperado Abstract: The goal of this research is to analyze variables that compose the indicator of the quality of education of the state of São Paulo (IDESP) in the city of Guarulhos. The main justification for this work is to visualize year after year the results of schools without achieving a real evolution, repeating the same results achieved in other editions. After a brief summary on the implementation of the large-scale evaluation system in Brazil, we present the composition of IDESP and the distribution of its results in the city of Guarulhos in the years of 2013, 2014 and 2015, as well as the main descriptive values of each year together with an analysis of its results, which will then be validated through the Spearman correlation test. For a better understanding of the dependence between the components that compose the IDESP adopted the modeling between a certain component of the IDESP, which is an indicative of poor school performance and the rate of reprobation using the Asymmetric Cubic Sections (ACS) family of Copulas describe the dependence, we can verify different types of dependences. Among the most outstanding conclusions, we see that the results show that the dependence found is not always reasonable, so we suspect that there is some kind of interference in the construction of these variables Mestrado Matemática em Rede Nacional Mestre em Matemática CAPES 5512227

In this work we use well established tools and propose new ones with good properties to solve two practical problems: the analysis of daily rainfall data from Seattle in order to define if the underlying annual processes are similar or not and the detecction of fraud among consumers of an energy company in Campinas. We point out similarities and dissimilarities between samples of the processes by using a metric based on the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), allowing for the creation of a clustering technique based on this metric. Besides that, we estimate Partition Markov Models through BIC that consistently estimate the partition of the state space such that each part is a set of equivalent states, that is, states that share the same transition probabilities. Thus, the model provides quality in the estimation procedure and the interpretability of the parts with equivalent states. With these tools, we build a representation for the annual rainfall proces, also we build profiles of fraudulent customers and we introduce a risk of fraud classification of customers Mestrado Estatística Mestra em Estatística

Por fim, será documentada a análise de convergência do parâmetros obtidos através das simulações estocásticas Abstract: The goal of the current study is to analyze the dependence between random variables by assessing the conditional probability at tail values (extreme values). The statistical analysis will be done with the theory of copulas, thereby estimating the indexing parameters of the copula family with bayesian methods. The copula estimation concerns only the dependence structure between the random variables at hand and, in this master thesis, the marginal distributions are to be estimated by first transforming them into pseudo-observations and later concentrating only in the copula. The estimation of this parameter will be made with bayesian simulation methods based on Hamiltonean Monte Carlo (HMC). Finally, the conditional probability associated to tail values can be expressed in terms of the copula function and accordingly calculated using the estimated parameter. Upon concluding this study, the statistical dependency between random variables in the tails will be quantified among 3 distinct applications ¿ (1) relation between Gini¿s Inequality Index and total income concentration in the richest 1%, with best model being the Joe copula attesting the strong positive association and right tail dependence, in other words, countries with greatest income inequality tend to concentrate its income among the top 1% richest citzens; (2) relation between total volume before the dam breaking, released tailings volume and the traveled distance by the tailings in case of known tailings dams failures, with equally good fits given by Gaussian and Gumbel-Hougaard copulas, which confirm great distances travelled given an elevated damfactor; and (3) relation between the age at death and proportion of black and brown population among all districts of São Paulo, with better fits given by Gaussian and Frank copulas, where an increasing range of percentage of black and brown people corresponds to an average 10 years decline in the mean age at death, signaling the race inequality between neighbourhoods in the city of São Paulo . Finally, the documentation of the convergence of dependency measures estimates, obtained by means of stochastic simulations, will be laid out Mestrado Estatística Mestre em Estatística CNPQ 134682/2018-1 CAPES

We come back to the roots of the Huffman codes and, based on elements of information theory, we justify its practicality and limitations, as well the benefits and drawbacks of its conditional forms. We design conditioning classes to Huffman codes based on Markov chains and point out that this strategy allows a reduction on the message average length per symbol, but demands the transmission of a large set of parameters to establish the selected model. We reintroduce the concept of partition Markov models and their related results. This family of models arranges the state space of a Markov chain in sets (parts) based on its transition probability functions. We establish the alliance between conditional encoding and such models for the purpose of deriving a methodology with the potential to lessen the number of parameters to be communicated during the encoding process, which yields a shorter binary representation. Furthermore, we establish a new class of Markovian processes: the Markov chain with a gap. This design allows that a faraway, but relevant, past to be included during the modeling of the stochastic process, whose proper handling leads to a redefinition of the partition models and the characterization of an even more flexible family: the G3M (minimal Markovian models with a gap). We show how to make use of the G3M to efficiently model the Covid-19 genome, and also how to integrate it to matrix encoding processes and lossy image compression Doutorado Estatística Doutor em Estatística CAPES 001

As widely indicated in the literature, the choice of the prior distribution is a key aspect of the Bayesian method, and in many cases is not trivial. In this work, we derive two default prior distributions to perform Bayesian inference using the spatial Student-t and binary regression models. In the first case, we use the objective Bayesian analysis framework to introduce a {\it reference}-based and two {\it Jeffreys} priors for the spatial Student-t regression (T-SR) model with unknown degrees of freedom. We also show the conditions under which these densities yield to a proper posterior distribution. Simulation studies and a real data application are used to evaluate the performance of the mentioned priors, incorporating a {\it vague} one in the comparison process. Regarding the binary regression model, we introduce the penalized complexity prior of the skewness parameter $\alpha$ for the family of power links, which are useful to deal with imbalanced data. We derive a general expression for this density and show its usefulness in some particular cases, such as the power logit and the power probit links. In addition, we show that the power complementary log-log and its associated reversal link are non-identifiable. To obtain posterior samples, we use Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, which avoids the random walk behavior of the Metropolis and Gibbs sampling algorithms. A simulation study and a real data application are used to assess the efficiency of the introduced densities in comparison with the Gaussian and uniform densities Doutorado Estatística Doutor em Estatística CAPES 001

In this thesis, we apply the ds metric and related notions (proposed in (GARCÍA; GHOLIZADEH; GONZÁLEZ-LÓPEZ, 2018a) and (FERNÁNDEZ et al., 2019)), derived from the BIC. We use these notions to classify realizations of Markovian stochastic processes, defined in the same alphabet A and having an order o and state space S Ao (o, |A|, |S| 8), hereinafter referred to as Markov chains (CM). The construction process and some properties of ds (and related notions) are described. Thus, we ordered, in relation to their representativeness regarding the formation laws, DNA sequences from genomic data of the Dengue virus type 1 (CORDEIRO et al., 2019a) and the Zika virus (GARCÍA et al., 2018), and such sequences were treated as CM realizations with alphabet A ta, c, g, tu and o 3. Therefore, we indicate in each case which sequence could be used as a "gold standard" of the set of sequences, which can be used in comparisons with other sequences in order, for example, to detect new strains of the virus. However, this procedure has the characteristic of ignoring, the information contained in the non-chosen sequences. In order to fill this gap, we developed an extension of the ds metric (proposed in (GARCÍA; GHOLIZADEH; GONZÁLEZ-LÓPEZ, 2018a)). To this end, a new notion is proposed (see (CORDEIRO et al., 2020)) defined in a set M t1, ..., pu Ao, where t1, ..., pu is a set of indexers for each of the available p independent CM realizations. In the modeling we partition the set M using an equivalence relation and, we show how this metric can be used to obtain the Partition Markov Model (MMP), proposed in (CORDEIRO et al., 2020). In the sequence, we also show some of the theoretical properties of the metric, among them: (i) the proof that it is, in fact, a metric and, therefore, M a metric space (ii) the statistical consistency of the metric in the estimation of the MMP (CORDEIRO et al., 2020). Lastly, we brought two applications of the metric in obtaining MMP, for collections of genomic data of the Epstein-Bar (CORDEIRO et al., 2019b) and Zika (CORDEIRO et al., 2020) viruses. In both applications, a unique model that sparingly describes the law of formation of all sequences was obtained. As in the first situation, this unique model could be compared to other sequences not used in the estimation of the model and, thus, to identify possible new strains of the virus under investigation Doutorado Estatística Doutor em Estatística CAPES 0

In this work, we introduce the theoretical foundations of the use of games in teaching practice. To show how to use this game to develop habilities, we bring together probability notions coming from the regular curriculum of high school students. We consider it essential for the full use of the proposed activity. We also introduce classical game theory notions to classify the Bozó game in the light of these ideas and make a deeper inspection about the possible choices that the player faces during a match, identifying if there is a strategy in this game. Since the use of a game allows students to develop social skills, affective memory with the content, stimulating probabilistic reasoning, we simulate several configurations of the game to identify strategies revealing efficient criteria to be used for the gamer. Also, we introduce a proposal for a class activity involving the Bozó for high school students Mestrado Matemática em Rede Nacional - PROFMAT Mestre em Matemática em Rede Nacional

Nota-se ainda, que segundo as nossas análises, as escolas mostram-se estatisticamente heterogêneas Abstract: This research through a questionnaire, socio-educational, aims to use some tools of Statistical Inference. Inspect the school reality of students in four elementary schools II (6th to 9th grade) in the municipality of Valinhos. Observe the differences and similarities that they have, even presenting students with different profiles and life reality. Through the questionnaire it is possible to know the student's profile, the school in which he studies and to check possible problems from the student's point of view (perception analysis). Among the conclusions obtained, the heterogeneity of students from the same school stands out, covering different grades and the similarities of some factors, such as internal school conflicts, everyday problems, pedagogical and academic profiles between schools with very different realities. It should also be noted that, according to our analyzes, schools are statistically heterogeneous Mestrado Matemática em Rede Nacional Mestre em Matemática em Rede Nacional - PROFMAT CAPES

Aplicamos os conceitos e resultados aqui introduzidos em bases de dados de diversas reas, como lingustica, gentica, indstria e nanas Abstract: In this thesis we deal with two statistical issues. We investigate the properties of a metric between samples from stochastic processes and we use it to develop a robust sample selection procedure. We address the problem of deciding if two independent samples, coming from discrete Markovian processes, are governed by the same stochastic law. In the case on which is decided that the laws generating the processes are not the same, the methodology presented in this research allows to detect the specific elements of the state space where the discrepancies are manifested. We establish a local metric between samples based on the Bayesian Information Criterion, we derive the bound that must be used in this metric to take the decision. We show that the distance is statistically consistent to detect if the samples follow the same law, tending to zero when the sample sizes increase. We show that the metric assumes arbitrarily large values when the sample sizes increase and the stochastic laws are different. Also we show the relationship of this distance to the divergence of Kullback Leibler which reveals its stochastic behavior in terms of the Chi-squared distribution. We introduce a method of selecting samples from a set of samples coming from Markovian processes of finite order and finite alphabet. Under the assumption of the existence of a law that prevails in at least 50 % of the samples of the collection, we show the procedure which allows to identify samples governed by the predominant law. The approach is based on the local metric between samples, which tends to zero when we compare samples of identical law and tends to infinity when comparing samples with different laws. The local distance allows to define a criterion which takes arbitrarily large values when the previous assumption about the existence of a predominant law does not hold. We illustrate both, the use of this metric and the procedure of selecting samples through applications in real data Doutorado Estatística Doutor em Estatística CNPQ 305816792 CAPES

Introduzimos um novo algoritmo para seleção de modelos baseado na distribuição preditiva a posteriori, cujos resultados são validados através de simulações e análises de dados reais relacionados à hidrologia Abstract: In this work, we study Bayesian inference methods for long-tailed distributions that don't involve the evaluation of the likelihood function. Initially, we present an analysis of the properties of heavy-tailed distributions and particular cases, as long-tailed, subexponencial and regular variation families. Some statistics are presented and their sampling behavior studied, in order to develop diagnostic measures. For obtaining posterior inferences, we discuss the minimum entropy ABC and others likelihood-free algorithms, aiming model checking and model selection. We introduce a new model selection algorithm based on the posterior predictive distribution, the results of which are validated through simulations and real data related to river flow Mestrado Estatística Mestre em Estatística

Desse modo, pretendemos que a metodologia apresentada neste trabalho possa contribuir para a disseminação do conhecimento destas ferramentas matemáticas para os níveis fundamental e médio do ensino escolar Abstract: This dissertation presents a practical approach for teaching mathematics in the elementary and secondary levels. More specifically, presents concepts of Basic Statistics as information processing and the study of probabilities. These concepts are of great importance in scientific (experimental way, for example) and social (understanding of population characteristics), besides being inserted into the daily student's lives. Therefore, it was understood that is necessary to develop the skills and abilities to organize and understand information. Experiments were carried out for the application of the concepts presented in classroom. Also a search posing questions to analyze aspects of food and physical exercise. The realization of these experiments purpose, besides the application of classroom learnt concepts, develop in students, logic reasoning and critical look at issues related to the discipline of mathematics and daily situations by organizing and interpreting information with charts and graphs. The research aimed to show how it is used statistical theory for decision making and, if so , to improve their quality of life.
