Abstract

A new species belonging to the Hoplias malabaricus complex from the Amazon basin, Brazil, is described. The new species is characterized by 15–16 predorsal scales, 37–39 lateral-line scales, 5 scales from dorsal fin to lateral line, 38–39 vertebrae, iii-iv, 7–8 anal-fin rays, ii-iv, 12–15 caudal-fin rays, last vertical series of scales on the base of caudal-fin rays forming a straight line, 6–7 dark bands in anal fin and no distinctive dark bands or blotches on flanks. The new species is also distinguished from other congeners of the H. malabaricus species-group by means of landmark-based morphometrics and DNA Barcoding (Cytochrome c Oxidase I gene). Abstract

Rivers and lake systems in the southern cone of South America have been widely influenced by historic glaciations events, carrying important implications on the evolution of aquatic organisms including prompting transitions between marine and freshwater habitats and by triggering hybridization among incipient species via waterway connectivity and stream capture events. Silverside fishes (Odontesthes) in the region comprise a radiation of 19 marine and freshwater species that have been hypothesized on the basis of morphological or mitochondrial DNA data to have either transitioned repeatedly into continental waters from the sea or colonized marine habitats following freshwater diversification. New ddRAD data presented here provide a robust framework to investigate biogeographic history and habitat transitions in Odontesthes. We show that Odontesthes silversides originally diversified in the Pacific but independently colonized the Atlantic three times, producing three independent marine-to-freshwater transitions. Our results also indicate recent introgression of marine mitochondrial haplotypes into two freshwater clades, with more recurring instances of hybridization among Atlantic- vs. Pacific-slope species. In Pacific freshwater drainages, hybridization with a marine species appears to be geographically isolated and may be related to glaciation events. Abstract

By means of an integrative taxonomic approach, a new species of the H. malabaricus group from the Río de La Plata basin is described. Hoplias argentinensis, new species, is characterized by: 17-19 predorsal scales, 42-43 ver- tebrae, 20 scales around caudal peduncle, no distinctive brown bands in lower jaw, last series of vertical scales on caudal fin nearly straight, 41-44 lateral-line scales and snout width (18.4-24.9 % of SL). Hoplias argentinensis is discriminated from all other species of the H. malabaricus group by means of traditional characters, landmarks- based morphometrics and genetics. Abstract

Las lisas son peces marinos costeros, estuarino-dependientes. Poseen una distribución global, encontrándoselas en todos los mares templados, subtropicales y tropicales. Zoológicamente hablando, pertenecen a la Familia Mugilidae, la cual presenta más de cien especies distribuidas alrededor del mundo. En Argentina habitan dos especies de lisas, pertenecientes al Género Mugil: una de presencia permanente, denominada vulgarmente lisa rayada (cuyo nombre científico es Mugil liza), y otra de presencia ocasional, ya que proviene de Brasil, la lisa blanca o white mullet (Mugil curema) Fil: González Castro, Mariano. 21. Understanding the early ontogenetic stages of Mugil liza (Mugilidae): Morphological traits and digestive/metabolic profile of pre‐juveniles after recruitment.

Abstract

The family Mugilidae consists mainly of diadromous species, whose reproduction occurs in offshore waters. Pre‐juveniles shift their diet in the surf zone (zooplanktophagous to iliophagous). Later, during their recruitment into estuaries, huge changes take place in their digestive system. However, digestive and metabolic characteristics and some morphological traits at recruitment are unknown for Mugilidae. We performed comparative studies on early and late pre‐juveniles of Mugil liza recruited in Mar Chiquita Coastal Lagoon (37°32′–37°45′S, 57°19′–57°26′W, Argentina). We determined digestive enzyme activities (intestine), energy reserves (liver/muscle), total/standard length, total weight, intestinal coefficient, hepatosomatic index and retroperitoneal fat. Pre‐juveniles exhibited amylase, maltase, sucrase, lipase, trypsin and aminopeptidase‐N (APN) activities, which were maintained over a wide range of pH and temperature, and exhibited Michaelis–Menten kinetics. In late pre‐juveniles, amylase (422 ± 131 μmol maltose min−1 mgprot−1), sucrase (86 ± 14 mg glucose min−1 mgprot−1), trypsin (84 ± 9 μmoles min−1 mgprot−1) and APN (0.58 ± 0.08 μmoles min−1 mgprot−1) activities were higher (42%, 28%, 35% and 28%, respectively) than in the early stage. Also, the intestinal coefficient was higher in late (3.04) compared to early (2.06) pre‐juveniles. Moreover, the liver appeared to be a main site of glycogen and triglyceride storage in late pre‐juveniles, muscle being the site of storage in early pre‐juveniles, exhibiting higher glycogen, free glucose and protein concentrations (92%, 82%, 32%, respectively). The results suggest that pre‐juveniles of M. liza exhibit an adequate digestive battery to perform complete hydrolysis of various dietary substrates, availability of energy reserves and morphological characteristics to support their feeding habit and growth after recruitment. Abstract

The present study evaluated the possible occurrence of cryptic species among Merluccidae from Argentina by examining sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (coI) mtDNA. This approach can discriminate Merluccius hubbsi and Merluccius australis; specimens with morphological diagnostic characters of Merluccius patagonicus formed a cohesive cluster with M. hubbsi specimens. Abstract

The high intraspecific variation among and the conservative external morphology of Merluccius spp. have resulted in serious identification difficulties. Four hundred and twenty fresh and preserved specimens of Merluccius were analyzed, including the type series of Merluccius australis, M. tasmanicus and M. hubbsi; specimens of M. hubbsi from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, and individuals of M. australis from Argentina and New Zealand were examined. The nomenclatural status of the type specimens of M. australis is discussed and the designation of a lectotype and a paralectotype is proposed. The comparative study of morphology, meristic, traditional and landmark-based morphometry, both external and internal, and through DNA-based Barcoding molecular tools demonstrates that Merluccius tasmanicus is a junior synonym of Merluccius australis. Meristic and morphometric characters of types of M. tasmanicus completely overlap those of M. australis, whereas M. hubbsi show fewer scales along the lateral line, total vertebrae, second dorsal and anal-fin rays. A trend of a longer snout and wider head in M. australis and M. tasmanicus, and larger eyes and longer pelvic fins, in M. hubbsi was observed. While discriminant characters were found in the internal elements (hyomandibula, urohyal and sagitta otolith) between M. hubbsi and M. australis, none were observed between M. australis and those reported for M. tasmanicus. 30. Juveniles recruitment and daily growth of the southern stock of Mugil liza (Actinopterygii; Fam. Mugilidae): new evidence for the current life-history model.

Abstract

Mugil liza is distributed along the western Atlantic coast. It is a commercially exploited species in Argentina, supporting a small-scale fishery conducted by an artisanal fleet. Age determination of fishes constitutes an important key issue for fishery management. The age, growth and recruitment of M. liza juveniles in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon and Las Brusquitas creek (Buenos Aires, Argentina), were estimated by means of the analysis of the sagittal otoliths of fish collected during January to December of 2014. Ages were estimated by counting and measuring daily growth increments in otoliths under a light microscope. A total of 735 specimens ranging from 19 to 71.5 mm SL and from 67 to 212 days age was analysed. Lengths at previous ages were determined by back-calculation, a linear growth model was fitted to the back-calculated data: SL = 0.2468 + 2.0516; R 2 = 0.9945. Two peaks of recruiters were observed from February to March, and from October to November in 2014. Mean ages in days of Querimana and juveniles at the recruitment time were 84.07 ± 14.43 days and 87.56 ± 19.51 days, respectively. The hatching dates of specimens showed two spawning seasons. One was from December 2013 to January 2014, and the second one from July to August 2014. The assessment carried on this work generated age determination values that support previous findings, contributing to make a more accurate description of the life-history model currently used. Abstract

Juveniles of Odontesthes argentinensis were collected from Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina. The morphology of the gills was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The surface of the filaments and the pharyngeal region of the gill arch were covered by a mosaic of polygonal epithelial cells with apical concentric microridges. The apical crypts of mitochondria-rich cells were mainly found in the trailing edge of the filament epithelium and in the interlamellar surfaces. Glycoconjugates (GCs) elaborated by the secretory cells in the epithelium covering the gill filaments and the pharyngeal region of O. argentinensis were studied by means of a series of carbohydrate histochemical methods. Mucous cells among the lining epithelium of the pharynx showed a histochemical profile similar to that of mucous cells of filaments and secondary lamellae. Mucous cells showed the presence of neutral, sulphated, carboxylated and sialylated GCs. Glycoconjugates secreted on the surface of the gills could be associated with different functions such as lubrication, ionic regulation and inhibition of pathogen proliferation. 34. Basin‐scale distribution and haplotype partitioning in different genetic lineages of the Neotropical migratory fish Salminus brasiliensis.

Abstract

Abstract: Four valid species are currently recognized in the Neotropical migratory genus Salminus: Salminus brasiliensis, Salminus franciscanus, Salminus hilarii and Salminus affinis. However, molecular evidence strongly suggested that two different species might be contained under the taxonomic denomination Salminus brasiliensis. Therefore, the geographical distribution of each entity was evaluated in order to understand their contribution to the different stocks of major river networks in South America. Major river networks of the La Plata River basin were explored to characterize the geographical distribution of the two genetic lineages. To characterize further the genetic partitioning within each lineage of S. brasiliensis, a haplotype analysis was conducted. The 5′ region of the mitochondrial COI gene was used as the molecular marker. In total, 45 fish samples of S. brasiliensis from 19 sites in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay were sequenced. Additional COI sequences of S. brasiliensis, S. franciscanus and S. hilarii were gathered from public databases. All samples of S. brasiliensis comprised two different mitochondrial lineages. Accordingly, phylogenetic tree topologies segregated the complete set of sequences into two disparate clusters. One of these clusters was far closer phylogenetically to S. hilarii than to other S. brasiliensis. While one of the genetic lineages of S. brasiliensis seemed mostly restricted to the upper Paraná River, the other showed a widespread distribution along major river networks of the basin. Fifteen unique haplotypes were identified and collapsed. Salminus hilarii and S. franciscanus have private haplotypes. In S. brasiliensis, each mitochondrial lineage also hosts a set of unshared haplotypes. The sympatry of two different putative species within S. brasiliensis together with their unshared haplotypes present a difficult situation for management and conservation that calls for timely solutions. Abstract

A comparative osteological analysis of 6 bones and the sagitta otolith in Merluccius hubbsi and M. australis, two species that live in Southwest Atlantic, has been carried out. The objective was to contribute to identifying these two species as prey in the diet studies, and further description of these bony elements for a better taxonomic identification. Fresh bones disarticulation techniques were used. Potentially diagnostic features were observed for discrimination of species in the following elements: urohyal, maxilla, premaxilla, dentary, quadrate, hyomandibular, and the sagitta otolith.

Deux spécimens de Sardinella aurita ont été capturés dans la lagune côtière de Mar Chiquita, Argentine, et identifiés sur des bases morphologique et moléculaire. Le statut taxinomique du genre dans l’océan Atlantique ouest reste encore incertain. Les résultats présentés dans cette étude, basés sur l’analyse par ADN barcoding, sont en accord avec ceux qui ont été obtenus par d’autres marqueurs moléculaires et suggèrent que les espèces S. aurita et S. brasiliensis sont conspécifiques. Abstract

This study analyzed the morphometric, microsatellite loci and mitochondrial control region variation of the striped weakfish from two feeding and spawning grounds in the coastal area of Buenos Aires province. The characterization of the body shape proved to be different between sites. Genetic structure analysis showed that the main source of genetic variation was within populations rather than among populations and low genetic differentiation was observed between sites. The striped weakfish inhabiting the coastal areas of Buenos Aires would exhibit two management units in agreement with other fishes studied in both areas.

Abstract

El estudio morfológico de los elementos óseos es una herramienta valiosa para la taxonomía, que ha permitido la definición de los grandes grupos de vertebrados y la descripción e identificación de especies de peces. Así, la osteología comparada aporta elementos diagnósticos utilizables en estudios de biodiversidad, ecología trófica y dinámica de la alimentación de organismos ictiófagos. El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis osteológico descriptivo y comparativo que permita la identificación, a través de los elementos óseos, de las principales especies de peces presentes en Mar Chiquita: la saraca (Brevoortia aurea), la lisa (Mugil platanus), el pejerrey de mar (Odontesthes argentinensis), la corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri), la corvina negra (Pogonias cromis), el lenguado de fango (Paralichthys orbignyanus), la anchoa de banco (Pomatomus saltatrix), la pescadilla de red (Cynoscion guatucupa) y la burriqueta (Menticirrhus americanus). Se analizaron seis ejemplares de cada especie y se utilizaron técnicas de desarticulación en peces frescos y congelados. Sobre la base de las características diagnósticas de los huesos y su grado de resistencia a la digestibilidad fueron seleccionados once elementos óseos: paraesfenoides, lacrimal, premaxilar, dentario, anguloarticular, palatino, hiomandibular, ceratohial, urohial, preopérculo y postemporal. Se realizó la descripción de los huesos mencionados y de acuerdo a las diferencias más importantes encontradas entre las especies estudiadas, se confeccionaron claves de identificación. Se concluye que la morfología de los elementos óseos constituye una herramienta diagnóstica valiosa para la determinación específica de los peces presentes en la laguna costera Mar Chiquita y zonas costeras aledañas. The morphological analysis of the bones is a valuable tool for taxonomy, which has allowed the definition of the higher groups of vertebrates and descriptions and identifications of fish species. Therefore, the compared osteology provides valuable diagnostic elements in biodiversity studies, ecology and dynamics of trophic habits of piscivore fish. The goal of the present study is to make a descriptive and comparative osteological analysis that allow the identification of the main fish species occurring in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon: the brazilian menhaden (Brevoortia aurea), the mullet (Mugil platanus), the silver side (Odontesthes argentinensis), the white croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), the black drum (Pogonias cromis), the flounder (Paralichthys orbignyanus), the blue fish (Pomatomus saltatrix), the stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) and the southern kingfish (Menticirrhus americanus). Six specimens of each species were analyzed and methods to disarticulate skeletons in fresh and frozen specimens were used. On the basis of the diagnostic characteristics of the bones and their degree of digestibility resistance, eleven bones were selected: parasphenoid, lachrymal, premaxilla, dentary, anguloarticular, palatine, hyomandibular, ceratohyal, urohyal, preopercle and posttemporal. Each bone has been described, and according to the most important differences found among fish species, identification keys were elaborated. We conclude that bone morphology constitutes a valuable diagnostic tool for the identification of fish species occurring in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon and coastal adjacent areas.

Abstract

The fibres of superficial and deep abductor muscles of the pectoral fins of the stripped weakfish, Cynoscion guatucupa have been studied using histochemical techniques: succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) for mitochondria, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) for glycogen, myosin-adenosintriphosphatase (m ATPase) to identify different fibre types based on the contraction speed and modified ATPase to identify capillaries. The fibre diameters were measured, and the capillaries of the main fibre types - red, pink and white- were counted. The two muscles showed both macroscopically and microscopically two well-differentiated zones with predominant white fibres. The area of insertion of muscles into the fin rays had red, pink and white fibres. The origin zone of the muscle into the bone was composed by white fibres only. Both zones of white muscle evidenced a mosaic of small, medium and large polygonal white fibres. Red, pink and white muscles showed a wide histochemical diversity of fibre subtypes. The area per peripheral capillary increased from the red to the white muscles. Due to the predominance of white fibres, the pectoral fins of C. guatucupa were mainly involved in rapid movements to stop/discontinue and stabilize the body during swimming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
