The purpose of the study is to describe the experience of suffering among informal care takers of patients with cancer-pain and non-cancer pain at three health institutions of Medellín-Colombia. It is a qualitative study of phenomenological type. The sample consisted of 16 care takers of patients who suffered cancer-pain and non-cancer pain. The information was gathered through a semi-structured interview, the level of suffering was quantified through the emotional thermometer as a complementing element to the qualitative approach. The data obtained were analyzed through categories and profiles previously defined which showed the most common meaning, level and factors of suffering among the interviewed care takers. The results showed that the majority of care takers experienced high levels of suffering. They reported feelings of sadness and satisfaction in a contradictory manner. In the cognitive realm, they associated suffering with pain and the good execution of their activity; in the behavioral field, they expressed that suffering was related to the difficulty in controling the patient’s physical symptoms, and with the deferral of their own life activities. In conclusion, the psychological support received by the care takers was perceived as a protecting factor to reduce suffering; the type of pain was related to the experience of suffering and the care taker’s role, who were mostly female care takers of patients with cancer pain. The interviewed care takers were at risk of presenting Burnout due to the multiple demands inherent to their role.

The Compact Muon Solenoid Collaboration is designing a new high-granularity endcap calorimeter, HGCAL, to be installed later this decade. As part of this development work, a prototype system was built, with an electromagnetic section consisting of 14 double-sided structures, providing 28 sampling layers. Each sampling layer has an hexagonal module, where a multipad large-area silicon sensor is glued between an electronics circuit board and a metal baseplate. The sensor pads of approximately 1 cm$^2$ are wire-bonded to the circuit board and are readout by custom integrated circuits. The prototype was extensively tested with beams at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron in 2018. Based on the data collected with beams of positrons, with energies ranging from 20 to 300 GeV, measurements of the energy resolution and linearity, the position and angular resolutions, and the shower shapes are presented and compared to a detailed Geant4 simulation.

As part of its HL-LHC upgrade program, the CMS Collaboration is developing a High Granularity Calorimeter (CE) to replace the existing endcap calorimeters. The CE is a sampling calorimeter with unprecedented transverse and longitudinal readout for both electromagnetic (CE-E) and hadronic (CE-H) compartments. The calorimeter will be built with $\sim$30,000 hexagonal silicon modules. Prototype modules have been constructed with 6-inch hexagonal silicon sensors with cell areas of 1.1~$cm^2$, and the SKIROC2-CMS readout ASIC. Beam tests of different sampling configurations were conducted with the prototype modules at DESY and CERN in 2017 and 2018. This paper describes the construction and commissioning of the CE calorimeter prototype, the silicon modules used in the construction, their basic performance, and the methods used for their calibration., Comment: 35 pages, submitted to JINST

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC will be upgraded to accommodate the 5-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity expected at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Concomitant with this increase will be an increase in the number of interactions in each bunch crossing and a significant increase in the total ionising dose and fluence. One part of this upgrade is the replacement of the current endcap calorimeters with a high granularity sampling calorimeter equipped with silicon sensors, designed to manage the high collision rates. As part of the development of this calorimeter, a series of beam tests have been conducted with different sampling configurations using prototype segmented silicon detectors. In the most recent of these tests, conducted in late 2018 at the CERN SPS, the performance of a prototype calorimeter equipped with ${\approx}12,000\rm{~channels}$ of silicon sensors was studied with beams of high-energy electrons, pions and muons. This paper describes the custom-built scalable data acquisition system that was built with readily available FPGA mezzanines and low-cost Raspberry PI computers.

Computer Science - Computers and Society - Abstract
This study explores the effects of COVID-19 confinement in the students performance in higher education. Using a field experiment of 458 students from three different subjects in Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), we study the differences in assessments by dividing students into two groups. The first group (control) corresponds to academic years 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. The second group (experimental) corresponds to students from 2019/2020, which is the group of students that interrupted their face-to-face activities because of the confinement. The results show that there is a significant positive effect of the COVID-19 confinement on students performance. This effect is also significative in activities that did not change their format when performed after the confinement. We find that this effect is significative both in subjects that increased the number of assessment activities and subjects that did not change the workload of students. Additionally, an analysis of students learning strategies before confinement shows that students did not study in a continuous basis. Based on these results, we conclude that COVID-19 confinement changed students learning strategies to a more continuous habit, improving their efficiency. For these reasons, better scores in students assessment are expected due to COVID-19 confinement that can be explained by an improvement in their learning performance.

The small-signal equivalent circuit of GaN-based self-switching diodes has been obtained, which apart from the intrinsic R ‖ C branch, generally used to describe the diode performance, needs new elements to describe the low-frequency dispersion of the impedance originated by the presence of surface and bulk traps. The proposed model allows us to reproduce not only the high-frequency results (extracted from S-parameter measurements in the 40 MHz–43.5 GHz range) at room temperature, but also the low-frequency impedance measurements (75 kHz–30 MHz) at cryogenic temperatures down to 70 K. These new elements are a self-inductance associated to the effect of surface states (typical of a device with a high surface-to-volume ratio) and an extra series R – C branch modeling the influence of the bulk traps. SCHOTTKY barrier diodes ,LOW temperatures ,GALLIUM nitride ,HYSTERESIS ,ELECTRIC potential measurement ,ELECTRON traps ,HIGH voltages - Abstract
In this paper, we report an analysis of reverse current mechanisms observed in GaN Schottky barrier diodes leading to hysteretic behavior of the I–V curves at low temperature. By means of DC measurements from 33 to 475 K, we demonstrate the presence of two leakage mechanisms when comparing the experiments with the results obtained using a unified model to predict the ideal reverse current of the diode. Poole–Frenkel emission is the dominant mechanism for temperatures above 200 K, while trap-assisted tunneling prevails for lower temperatures, where also, hysteresis cycles are revealed by means of DC dual-sweep voltage measurements. The energy of the corresponding traps has also been determined, being around 0.2 and 0.45 eV, respectively. The hysteresis phenomenon is attributed to the bias-induced occupancy of the energy states originating the leakage-current processes, which leads to the reduction of the reverse current after a high negative voltage is applied to the diode.

We report on the measurements of the two main figures of merit for microwave detection, namely, responsivity and noise equivalent power (NEP), in HEMTs based on two of the most broadly used material systems AlGaN/GaN and AlInAs/InGaAs. A comparison between their performances as RF detectors in a wide temperature range is provided by means of experiments made under probes with direct connection to the drain contact. InGaAs HEMTs exhibit much better responsivity and NEP, which are further improved when lowering the working temperature. Moreover, we analyze the possibility of optimizing the current-mode detection of the transistors by improving the impedance matching conditions through an adequate choice of the device width W. This paper presents a computational model for the cooperation of constraint domains and an implementation for a particular case of practical importance. The computational model supports declarative programming with lazy and possibly higher-order functions, predicates, and the cooperation of different constraint domains equipped with their respective solvers, relying on a so-called Constraint Functional Logic Programming (CFLP) scheme. The implementation has been developed on top of the CFLP system TOY, supporting the cooperation of the three domains H, R and FD, which supply equality and disequality constraints over symbolic terms, arithmetic constraints over the real numbers, and finite domain constraints over the integers, respectively. The computational model has been proved sound and complete w.r.t. the declarative semantics provided by the $CFLP$ scheme, while the implemented system has been tested with a set of benchmarks and shown to behave quite efficiently in comparison to the closest related approach we are aware of. A model to predict the ideal reverse leakage currents in Schottky barrier diodes, namely, thermionic emission and tunneling components, has been developed and tested by means of current–voltage–temperature measurements in GaN-on-SiC devices. The model addresses both current components and both forward and reverse polarities in a unified way and with the same set of parameters. The values of the main parameters (barrier height, series resistance, and ideality factor) are extracted from the fitting of the forward-bias I–V curves and then used to predict the reverse-bias behavior without any further adjustment. An excellent agreement with the I–V curves measured in the forward bias in the GaN diode under analysis has been achieved in a wide range of temperatures (275–475 K). In reverse bias, at temperatures higher than 425 K, a quasi-ideal behavior is found, but additional mechanisms (most likely trap-assisted tunneling) lead to an excess of leakage current at lower temperatures. We demonstrate the importance of the inclusion of image-charge effects in the model in order to correctly predict the values of the reverse leakage current. Relevant physical information, like the energy range at which most of the tunnel injection takes place or the distance from the interface at which tunneled electrons emerge, is also provided by the model. We work out a semiclassical theory of shot noise in ballistic n+-i-n+ semiconductor structures aiming at studying two fundamental physical correlations coming from Pauli exclusion principle and long range Coulomb interaction. The theory provides a unifying scheme which, in addition to the current-voltage characteristics, describes the suppression of shot noise due to Pauli and Coulomb correlations in the whole range of system parameters and applied bias. The whole scenario is summarized by a phase diagram in the plane of two dimensionless variables related to the sample length and contact chemical potential. Here different regions of physical interest can be identified where only Coulomb or only Pauli correlations are active, or where both are present with different relevance. The predictions of the theory are proven to be fully corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. Title changed and Introduction rewritten. Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics ,Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
We present a theoretical investigation of shot-noise properties in nondegenerate elastic diffusive conductors. Both Monte Carlo simulations and analytical approaches are used. Two new phenomena are found: (i) the display of enhanced shot noise for given energy dependences of the scattering time, and (ii) the recovery of full shot noise for asymptotic high applied bias. The first phenomenon is associated with the onset of negative differential conductivity in energy space that drives the system towards a dynamical electrical instability in excellent agreement with analytical predictions. The enhancement is found to be strongly amplified when the dimensionality in momentum space is lowered from 3 to 2 dimensions. The second phenomenon is due to the suppression of the effects of long range Coulomb correlations that takes place when the transit time becomes the shortest time scale in the system, and is common to both elastic and inelastic nondegenerate diffusive conductors. These phenomena shed new light in the understanding of the anomalous behavior of shot noise in mesoscopic conductors, which is a signature of correlations among different current pulses., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
We present a model for electron injection from thermal reservoirs which is applied to particle simulations of one-dimensional mesoscopic conductors. The statistics of injected carriers is correctly described from nondegenerate to completely degenerate conditions. The model is validated by comparing Monte Carlo simulations with existing analytical results for the case of ballistic conductors. An excellent agreement is found for average and noise characteristics, in particular, the fundamental unities of electrical and thermal conductances are exactly reproduced., Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 4 PS figures, accepted Semicond.
