Abstract

In this paper, we present sharp estimates for the covering numbers of the embedding of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) associated with the Weierstrass fractal kernel into the space of continuous functions. The method we apply is based on the characterization of the infinite-dimensional RKHS generated by the Weierstrass fractal kernel and it requires estimates for the norm operator of orthogonal projections on the RKHS.

Abstract

We present accurate upper and lower bounds for the covering numbers, with explicit constants, of the unit ball for two general classes of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS) on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. In both classes, the RKHS is generated by an isotropic continuous positive definite kernel. The upper and lower bounds we present carry precise information about the asymptotic constants, depending on the dimension of the sphere and the monotonic behavior of the Schoenberg/Fourier coefficients of the isotropic kernel.

Abstract

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are photosensors widely used for imaging in a variety of high energy and nuclear physics experiments. In noble-gas detectors for double-beta decay and dark matter experiments, SiPMs are attractive photosensors for imaging. However they are insensitive to the VUV scintillation emitted by the noble gases (xenon and argon). This difficulty is overcome in the NEXT experiment by coating the SiPMs with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) to convert the VUV light into visible light. TPB requires stringent storage and operational conditions to prevent its degradation by environmental agents. The development of UV sensitive SiPMs is thus of utmost interest for experiments using electroluminescence of noble-gas detectors. It is in particular an important issue for a robust and background free neutrinoless double-beta experiment with xenon gas aimed by NEXT. The photon detection efficiency (PDE) of UV-enhanced SiPMs provided by Hamamatsu was determined for light in the range 250-500 nm. The PDE of standard SiPMs of the same model (S10362-33-50C), coated and non-coated with TPB, was also determined for comparison. In the UV range 250-350 nm, the PDE of the standard SiPM is shown to decrease strongly, down to about 3%. The UV-enhanced SiPM without window is shown to have the maximum PDE of 44% at 325 nm and 30% at 250 nm. The PDE of the UV-enhanced SiPM with silicon resin window has a similar trend in the UV range, although it is about 30% lower. The TPB-coated SiPM has shown to have about 6 times higher PDE than the non-coated SiPM in the range 250-315 nm. This is however below the performance of the UV-enhanced prototypes in the same wavelength range. Abstract

NEXT-100 experiment aims at searching the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the Xe-136 isotope using a TPC filled with a 100 kg of high-pressure gaseous xenon, with 90% isotopic enrichment. The experiment will take place at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc (LSC), Spain. NEXT-100 uses electroluminescence (EL) technology for energy measurement with a resolution better than 1% FWHM. The gaseous xenon in the TPC additionally allows the tracks of the two beta particles to be recorded, which are expected to have a length of up to 30 cm at 10 bar pressure. The ability to record the topological signature of the neutrinoless double-beta events provides a powerful background rejection factor for the double-beta experiment. In this paper, we present a novel 3D imaging concept using SiPMs coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) for the EL read out and its first implementation in NEXT-DEMO, a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment. The design and the first characterization measurements of the NEXT-DEMO SiPM tracking system are presented. The SiPM response uniformity over the tracking plane drawn from its gain map is shown to be better than 4%. An automated active control system for the stabilization of the SiPMs gain was developed, based on the voltage supply compensation of the gain drifts. The gain is shown to be stabilized within 0.2% relative variation around its nominal value, provided by Hamamatsu, in a temperature range of 10 degree C. The noise level from the electronics and the SiPM dark noise is shown to lay typically below the level of 10 photoelectrons (pe) in the ADC. Hence, a detection threshold at 10 pe is set for the acquisition of the tracking signals. The ADC full dynamic range (4096 channels) is shown to be adequate for signal levels of up to 200 pe/microsecond, which enables recording most of the tracking signals., Comment: Submitted to JINST

Abstract

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the NEXT-100 detector that will search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bbonu) in Xe-136 at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (LSC), in Spain. The document formalizes the design presented in our Conceptual Design Report (CDR): an electroluminescence time projection chamber, with separate readout planes for calorimetry and tracking, located, respectively, behind cathode and anode. The detector is designed to hold a maximum of about 150 kg of xenon at 15 bar, or 100 kg at 10 bar. This option builds in the capability to increase the total isotope mass by 50% while keeping the operating pressure at a manageable level. The readout plane performing the energy measurement is composed of Hamamatsu R11410-10 photomultipliers, specially designed for operation in low-background, xenon-based detectors. Each individual PMT will be isolated from the gas by an individual, pressure resistant enclosure and will be coupled to the sensitive volume through a sapphire window. The tracking plane consists in an array of Hamamatsu S10362-11-050P MPPCs used as tracking pixels. They will be arranged in square boards holding 64 sensors (8 times8) with a 1-cm pitch. The inner walls of the TPC, the sapphire windows and the boards holding the MPPCs will be coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB), a wavelength shifter, to improve the light collection., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are the photon detectors chosen for the tracking readout in NEXT, a neutrinoless {\beta}{\beta} decay experiment which uses a high pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The reconstruction of event track and topology in this gaseous detector is a key handle for background rejection. Among the commercially available sensors that can be used for tracking, SiPMs offer important advantages, mainly high gain, ruggedness, cost-effectiveness and radio-purity. Their main drawback, however, is their non sensitivity in the emission spectrum of the xenon scintillation (peak at 175 nm). This is overcome by coating these sensors with the organic wavelength shifter tetraphenyl butadienne (TPB). Abstract

We propose an EASY (Electroluminescent ApparatuS of high Yield) and SOFT (Separated Optimized FuncTion) time-projection chamber for the NEXT experiment, that will search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bb0nu) in Xe-136. Our experiment must be competitive with the new generation of bb0nu searches already in operation or in construction. This requires a detector with very good energy resolution (<1%), very low background con- tamination (1E-4 counts/(keV \bullet kg \bullet y)) and large target mass. In addition, it needs to be operational as soon as possible. The design described here optimizes energy resolution thanks to the use of proportional electroluminescent amplification (EL); it is compact, as the Xe gas is under high pressure; and it allows the measurement of the topological signature of the event to further reduce the background contamination. The SOFT design uses different sensors for tracking and calorimetry. We propose the use of SiPMs (MPPCs) coated with a suitable wavelength shifter for the tracking, and the use of radiopure photomultipliers for the measurement of the energy and the primary scintillation needed to estimate the t0. This design provides the best possible energy resolution compared with other NEXT designs based on avalanche gain devices. The baseline design is an Asymmetric Neutrino Gas EL apparatus (ANGEL), which was already outlined in the NEXT LOI. ANGEL is conceived to be easy to fabricate. It requires very little R&D and most of the proposed solutions have already been tested in the NEXT-1 prototypes. Therefore, the detector can be ready by 2013. In this Conceptual Design Report (CDR) we discuss first the physics case, present a full design of the detector, describe the NEXT-1 EL prototypes and their initial results, and outline a project to build a detector with 100 kg of enriched xenon to be installed in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in 2013.

Abstract

Introduction: the glomus tumor is a benign neoplasm originated in the smooth muscle cells of the vascular glomus. Approximately 80% of lesions are located on the upper extremity and, of these, the majority are in the subungual area. The diagnosis must include imaging tests, among which ultrasound stands out, being a good alternative due to its low cost and accessibility. Objective: we present a case of late diagnosis of surgically managed glomus tumor, as well as a review of the existing literature for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this uncommon pathology. Clinical case: the case of a 52-year-old female patient who reported chronic, burning pain, radiating to the distal phalanx of the thumb with no history of trauma, of 2 years of evolution and which limited her daily life activities, is presented. The exploration with interphalangeal Doppler ultrasound is complemented, being an excellent alternative due to its easy accessibility. A glomus tumor was diagnosed in the interphalangeal thumb. An «H» approach was performed on the interphalangeal fold with subungual dissection with resection of the tumor piece and follow-up by an outpatient clinic where a surgical wound with adequate healing was found. Physical examination with capacity for the mobilization of the distal interphalangeal joint (IFJ) and visual analogue scale (VAS) 1 point. The updated pathological evaluation of the existence of a glomus tumor. Conclusions: ultrasound is an excellent aid in the diagnosis, as well as in the surgical planning for the treatment of the glomus tumor; for being accessible, low cost and highly effective. Abstract

Touch is the primary way people communicate intimacy in romantic relationships, and affectionate touch behaviors such as stroking, hugging and kissing are universally observed in partnerships all over the world. Here, we explored the association of love and affectionate touch behaviors in romantic partnerships in two studies comprising 7880 participants. In the first study, we used a cross-cultural survey conducted in 37 countries to test whether love was universally associated with affectionate touch behaviors. In the second study, using a more fine-tuned touch behavior scale, we tested whether the frequency of affectionate touch behaviors was related to love in romantic partnerships. As hypothesized, love was significantly and positively associated with affectionate touch behaviors in both studies and this result was replicated regardless of the inclusion of potentially relevant factors as controls. Altogether, our data strongly suggest that affectionate touch is a relatively stable characteristic of human romantic relationships that is robustly and reliably related to the degree of reported love between partners.

Abstract

In this research, were obtain and characterized polymeric and biocompatible particles in the micro and nano scale. The particulate systems is based on polyesters as vehicles for the controlled release of the drug hirudin (thrombin inhibitor, with anticoagulant properties). Three types of polymeric micro and nanoparticles were prepared, using: homopolymer PLLA poly(L-lactic acid), copolymer PLGA poly(lactic acid)glycolic, and polymer blend PLLA/PEG poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(ethylene glycol) in a 50:50 ratio; in order to obtain a support matrix for controlled release of hirudin. The preparation of the micro and nanoparticles was carried out following the microemulsification method. In order to know the morphology of the micro and nanoparticles obtained from PLLA, PLLA-PEG and PLGA, scanning electron microscopy was used, observing a symmetrical morphology of spherical particles. Subsequently, the micro and nanoparticles obtained with the hirudin drug were encapsulated by post-incubation and the effect of drug release was evaluated by coagulation assay. It was shown that these systems allow a controlled release of hirudin for up to 48 hours, under the experimental conditions of the trial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To date, more than 250 million people have been diagnosed with covid-19 around the world and of them, around five million have died from its complications. Accumulating evidence supports that covid-19 is not simply a respiratory disease per se, but potentially affects other organs, including the placenta. Before the identification of sars-cov-2, it was known that other coronaviruses were capable of causing serious acute respiratory diseases in humans, sars-cov and mers-cov, causing severe acute respiratory syndrome (sars) and respiratory syndrome of the Middle East (mers), respectively.

Abstract

Debido a la importancia social de trabajar con el anciano en Ecuador, una revisión sistemática de la literatura que incluye sus características y la importancia de obra para este grupo etario establecerá las bases teóricas de lo que significa la actividad física terapéutica. El objetivo de este trabajo es revelar la importancia del juego como un medio de actividad física terapéutica para los adultos mayores. Due to the social importance of working with the elderly in Ecuador, a systematic review of the literature that includes their characteristics and the importance of play for this age group will establish the theoretical basis of this means of therapeutic physical activity. The aim of this workis to reveal the importance of the play as a means of therapeutic physical activity for older adults.

Abstract

Las arritmias cardíacas son una de las complicaciones más frecuentes en el período postoperatorio inmediato de cirugía cardíaca con circulación extracorpórea, de los pacientes sometidos esta intervención terapéutica. Por lo tanto, el propósito del estudio fue analizar las complicaciones presentadas durante el período postoperatorio inmediato de cirugía cardiovascular en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, prospectivo, de corte transversal y cuantitativo, El diseño muestral fue aleatorio de tipo probabilístico obteniendo 71 pacientes. Cardiac arrhythmias are one of the most frequent complications in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, of patients undergoing this therapeutic intervention. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to analyze the complications presented during the immediate postoperative period of cardiovascular surgery in the intensive care unit. A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional and quantitative study was carried out. The sample design was random of probabilistic type obtaining 71 patients.

Abstract

Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. The surgical management of firearm injuries to the zygomaticomaxillary complex is a topic that needs to be addressed with much care. The complications that can arise during treatment, as well as the potential residual problems that can appear, lead to the need of recognizing these injuries as a maxillofacial treatment challenge. The infraorbital zone is the second most common area of injury in the face, accounting for up to 45% of midfacial fractures. The case presented is of a 54 year old man affected by the backward firing of a gun rifle that caused an oblique impaction towards the posterior lateral inferior side of the infraorbital complex. He was rapidly stabilized with an antibiotic and analgesic scheme, yet presented the following: a comminute fracture of the orbit floor with consequent communication towards the maxillary sinus, a non-displacing fracture of the frontomalar suture, a non-displacing fracture of the zygomatic arch and a lesion with loss of osseous tissue in the petrous region of the temporal bone. Rigid fixation followed stabilization, and the area was covered with a titanium mesh. Occasional tinnitus and photopsia were reported by the patient upon return, yet all other evaluated factors were in order. There have been different forms of management described in the literature, and it is recognized that each patient has different needs, therefore each case must be closely evaluated, so it is approached in the most appropriate manner. Resumen El manejo quirúrgico de las lesiones por armas de fuego al complejo cigomaticomaxilar representa una situación compleja en la práctica maxilofacial que debe ser abordada con extrema cautela, debido a las complicaciones que pueden surgir durante el tratamiento y los potenciales problemas residuales. La zona infraorbitaria es la segunda área más común de lesiones en la cara, representando hasta 45% de las fracturas mediocraneales. El presente caso es de un masculino de 54 años de edad, que sufrió trauma ocasionado por la parte trasera de un rifle de caza que causó un impacto en sentido oblicuo hacia el lado lateral inferior del complejo infraorbitario. El paciente fue estabilizado con esquema antibiótico y analgésico, el diagnóstico fue: fractura cominuta del piso de la órbita, con consecuente comunicación al seno maxilar, fractura no desplazada de la sutura frontomalar, fractura no desplazada del arco cigomático, y lesión con pérdida de tejido óseo en la región petrosa del hueso temporal. El tratamiento quirúrgico consistió en reducción de las fracturas y fijación rígida de las estructuras. Al control post operatorio el paciente refirió acufenos y fotopsia ocasional, no presentando otras alteraciones. Se ha descrito en la literatura diferentes abordajes para el manejo de estos traumatismos, sin embargo cada caso debe ser individualizado y evaluado de forma minuciosa para que éste, sea el adecuado.

Abstract

The use of alternative fuels in the cement industry has increased its relevance in the past decades due to their ecological and economic benefits. In concert with the efforts to increase its use, several studies have focused on their potential impact with respect to clinker reactivity and how they could affect the expected physical and mechanical properties. This work studied the effects of five alternative fuels on the reactivity of eight industrial clinker samples, considering several analytical techniques. Differences were identified among the clinker samples after replacing the alternative fuels, mainly with simultaneous eliminations, as in samples S4, S5 and S8. The modifications were related to the polymorph, size and reactivity of tricalcium silicate and to the clinker profile during the hydration process, due to the SO3 consumption rate. These changes were expressed in the higher compressive strengths in comparison with the original reference clinker., El uso de combustibles alternativos en la industria cementera ha ido en incremento en las últimas décadas debido a su beneficio ecológico y económico. En línea con los esfuerzos enfocados en incrementar su uso, se han realizado distintos estudios enfocados en determinar su impacto potencial en la reactividad del clínker y en cómo pueden afectar sus propiedades físicas y mecánicas. Este trabajo estudia el efecto de cinco combustibles alternos sobre la reactividad de ocho muestras industriales de clínker, considerando diferentes técnicas analíticas. Se identificaron diferencias principalmente cuando se realizaron eliminaciones simultáneas de varios combustibles, como en las muestras S4, S5 y S8. Las modificaciones se basan en un cambio en el polimorfo, tamaño y reactividad del silicato tricálcico y del perfil de hidratación de los clínkeres, relacionado con el ritmo del consumo del SO3. Las modificaciones se reflejaron en un incremento en la resistencia a la compresión.

Abstract

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have been widely introduced outside of their natural range and are one of the World’s most invasive species. Illegally introduced into the isolated, high-altitude (4520 m) Chungará catchment of northern Chile, rainbow trout have now been present in the system for ∼30 years and to our knowledge are the World’s highest known self-sustaining population. However, nothing is known about the status and impacts of these trout in the system. We analysed stomach contents and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) from liver and muscle to study the trophic ecology of rainbow trout from lake, river mouth and riverine habitats in the Chungará catchment to understand their basic ecology and to characterise their potential trophic interactions with native taxa. Both stomach contents and stable isotope values showed spatial differences in diet and habitat use, but also revealed that diet varied temporally within habitats. The trophic position of rainbow trout was similar in the three habitats examined and was constant over time, apart from the riverine population. Predation by rainbow trout had different potential effects across pelagic, benthic, and riverine habitats in the Chungará catchment, through the consumption of zooplankton, native amphipods, aquatic insects, and the endemic cypriniodontid fish Orestias chungarensis.
