This article presents an analysis of gender differences in cases of torture attributed to the Mexican Navy. Our objective is to demonstrate that gender is related to the intensity and type of mistreatment in the victims. We analyze the information of the recommendations issued by the National Commission of Human Rights issued in the Secretariat of the Navy in the period of 2006-2018. The results indicate that gender is independent in torture methods such as beatings, responses, suffocation and electrification. But the variable gender is dependent when using methods of forced nudity, sexual violence and rape. Additionally, the intensity of torture among woman victims is greater than that of men. This article analyzed the torture methods used by the Jalisco state police against 81 victims in the period 2008-2019. All the cases were associated with detainees for participating in alleged crimes, fights, or road incidents. The objective of this research was to identify differences between men and women in relation to the methods of physical and emotional suffering during torture. We analyzed 50 human rights recommendations to obtain a sample of 81 citizens. Only those cases with complete information on gender, torture method and municipality where the events occurred were chosen. The information was analyzed with the Chi squared test and the risk factor for cross-sectional studies was estimated through the odds ratio model. There are 7 methods of torture widely applied to men and women. In addition, significant differences were obtained in the application of asphyxia against men and sexual violence against women, although with little frequency. Finally, a risk of 6 times more of experiencing the method of suffocation was found in men, as well as of 9 times more when it occurred in the city of Guadalajara or its metropolitan area. The significant differences identified in the methods of torture perpetrated against women and men are associated with gender-based violence. The police officers who participated in this crime chose methods based on gender stereotypes, generating differentiated and specific effects on their victims. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. To reduce the important gap between mental health needs and low treatment utilization among college students, it is important to identify treatment barriers and preferences. Objective. To understand university students' perceptions of barriers and preferences for in-person and online mental health services on campus, in the community and through internet. Material and Methods. This is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study of 17 students from the PUERTAS project in two Mexican universities, one private, one public. Students were interviewed in depth and the narratives were analyzed by categorization of meanings. Results. In-person treatment was identified as a preference, in addition to highlighting the scarce promotion of mental health services in the university and community context, and little knowledge of online interventions. Conclusions. There is a need for greater dissemination of available in-person and online mental health treatment services in the university context as well as strategies to address barriers to care. Background: Sexual minority college students are at a higher risk for suicidal thoughts and self-injurious behaviors compared to heterosexual students. Minority stress theory proposes sexual minority individuals experience higher stress due to stigma. Using a sample of Mexican college students, this study tested perceived life stress as a mediator of suicide and self-injury outcomes across various sexual orientation groups.Methods: The sample of college students (N=7882) was recruited from nine Mexican universities as part of the WHO World Mental Health International College Student (WMH-ICS) initiative. Participants completed an online survey including demographic questions, measure of perceived life stress, suicide outcomes, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in the past 12 months.Results: Logistic regression analyses revealed identifying as a sexual minority significantly predicted a higher likelihood of suicide ideation (ORs 2.05-3.00), suicide attempts (ORs 2.48-8.73), and NSSI (ORs 2.92-4.18) compared to heterosexual students reporting no same-gender attraction. Significant indirect effects from mediation path analyses showed perceived life stress mediated the relationship between a sexual minority identity and suicide ideation (range of proportion mediated 10.48-31.48%), attempts (10.48-31.48%), and NSSI (7.69-20.09%) across each group except among asexual students.Limitations: The cross-sectional nature of the survey design precludes drawing causal inferences.Conclusion: Findings from this study contribute to minority stress theory by elucidating the role of perceived life stress as a mediator of suicide ideation and attempts and NSSI among sexual minority college students. Purpose: Mental health disparities have been documented among sexual minority college students, but there is a dearth of evidence from developing countries. The aim is to estimate the prevalence of 12-month mental and substance use disorders across a range of sexual identities among first-year college students in Mexican universities, and test whether there is an association between sexual identity and disorders and whether the association is moderated by gender. Method: The University Project for Healthy Students, a web-based survey conducted as part of the World Health Organization's World Mental Health International College Student initiative, recruited 7874 students from nine Mexican universities in 2016 and 2017. Logistic regressions estimated the association of sexual identity with 12-month major depressive episode, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, alcohol abuse/dependence, and drug abuse/dependence, with interaction terms for gender. Results: Compared to heterosexual students reporting no same-sex attraction (SSA), heterosexual students with SSA (AORs range 1.77–3.67) and lesbian/gay and bisexual students (AORs range 2.22–5.32) were at a higher risk for several disorders. Asexual students were at higher risk for drug abuse/dependence (AOR = 3.64). Students unsure of their sexual identity were at a higher risk for major depressive episode, panic disorder, and drug abuse/dependence (AORs range 2.25–3.82). Gender differences varied across sexual identity and disorder. Conclusion: These findings are the first empirical report of sexual minority psychiatric disparities among a college student population from a developing nation and underscore the importance of clinical interventions that address mental health needs among sexual minority college students. Objective. To estimate psychopathology and self-harm behavior of incoming first-year college students, sociodemographic correlates, service use and willingness to seek treatment. Materials and methods. 4 189 male and female incoming first-year students of six universities in four different states of Mexico responded to an online survey with a 79.3% response rate. Results. Almost one in three incoming students has experienced some type of psychopathology; however, only one in five has received treatment. Female, students who are older, whose parents are not married or deceased, and who have a non-heterosexual orientation, no religion or a non-Catholic/Christian religion have greater odds (1.18 - 1.99), whereas those who attend a private university and have a parent with some college education have lower odds (0.68 - 0.75) of experiencing any probable disorder. Conclusions. Substantial unmet need for mental health services combined with reported willingness to use university services suggests an opportunity for the detection, referral, and treatment of incoming students to promote a successful transition. The purpose is to understand mental health in young women not in education, employment or training (NEET) through the meanings attributed to life experience. From a larger study that included women, fifteen early adult women participated in this study using an intensive intentional sampling strategy. We carefully selected only a few cases, seeking to characterize the object of study and to obtain in depth information based on the participants´ subjective reality; they were females from Oviedo, Spain and Aguascalientes, Mexico. We found in young NEET women different emotional expressions of mental health related to the feelings of not being in the situation of not working or studying, such as sadness, loneliness, anxiety, stress, fear, frustration, and discomfort. These women experienced loneliness when felt they did not have friends, since they were isolated not going to school or work. These life stories allowed understanding, from the feminine subjective perspective, the emotional experience of NEET, which, according to the meanings they mentioned, are specific forms of distress and depression with repercussions for their mental health. These results demonstrate the relevance of new public policies on mental health, education and work to attend to the needs of this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
