Background: Stroke chameleons (SC), are often diagnosed too late in their course to benefit from intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) treatment in the Emergency Room (ER). It remains unclear what proportion of this patient population would be a candidate for IVT. We sought to identify the proportion of SC patients with contraindications to IVT and to delineate what those contraindications are., Methods: All consecutive SC patients who presented to the ERat a single center in Santiago Chile were evaluated between December 2014 and October 2023., Results: A total of 1193 S patients were evaluated, of which sixty-three (5.2 %, 95 %CI 4.1-6.6) were diagnosed as SC (mean age 59 ± 21.3 years, 32 (50.7 %) women). The median NIHSS was 1 (IQR 1-3) and 50 (79.3 %) patients had anNIHSS ≤ 3. Of the 63 SC patients, 14 (22.2 %) were determined to be IVT candidates. In the remaining 49 patients, 71 contraindications for IVT were present: 28 patients had 1 contraindication, 20 patients had 2 contraindications, and 1 patient had 3 contraindications. The most common contraindication was absence of deficits measurable by NIHSS or very mild deficits in 31 (49.2 %) patients. This was followed by being outside of the therapeutic window for thrombolysis in 30 (47.6 %) patients. Both of these contraindications were present in 14 (22.2 %) patients. The most common erroneous diagnoses that SC patients received on presentation the ER were metabolic encephalopathy (11, 17.4 %), seizure disorder (9, 14.2 %), and migraine (7, 11.2 %)., Conclusions: More than two thirds of SC patients presented to the ER with contraindications to IVT. Introduction: Scarce data exist about clinical/radiological differences between acute ischemic strokes diagnosed in the emergency room (AISER) and stroke chameleons (SCs). We aimed at describing the differences observed in a comprehensive stroke center in Chile., Methods: Prospective observational study of patients with ischemic stroke syndromes admitted to the emergency room (ER) of Clínica Alemana between December 2014 and October 2023., Results: 1,197 patients were included; of these 63 (5.2%, 95% CI: 4.1-6.6) were SC; these were younger (p < 0.001), less frequently hypertensive (p = 0.03), and they also had lower systolic (SBP) (p < 0.001), diastolic blood pressures (DBP) (p = 0.011), and NIHSS (p < 0.001). Clinically, they presented less frequently gaze (p = 0.008) and campimetry alterations (p = 0.03), facial (p < 0.001) and limb weakness (left arm [p = 0.004], right arm (p = 0.041), left leg (p = 0.001), right leg p = 0.0029), sensory abnormalities (p < 0.001), and dysarthria (p < 0.001). Neuroradiological evaluations included less frequently large vessel occlusions (p = 0.01) and other stroke locations (p = 0.005); they also differed in their etiologies (p < 0.001). Brainstem strokes (p < 0.001) and extinction/inattention symptoms (p < 0.001) were only seen in AISER. In multivariate analysis, younger age (OR: 0.945; 95% CI: 0.93-0.96), DBP (OR: 0.97; 95% CI, 0.95-0.99), facial weakness (OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.19-0.78), sensory abnormities (OR: 0.16.18; 95% CI, 0.05-0.4), infratentorial location (OR: 0.36; 95% CI, 0.15-0.78), posterior circulation involvement (OR: 3.02; 95% CI, 1.45-6.3), cardioembolic (OR: 3.5; 95% CI, 1.56-7.99), and undetermined (OR: 2.42; 95% CI, 1.22-4.7; 95%) etiologies, remained statistically significant. A stepwise analysis including only clinical elements present on the patient's arrival to the ER, demonstrates that age (OR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.94-0.97), DBP (OR: 0.97; 95% CI, 0.95-0.99), the presence of atrial fibrillation (OR: 2.22; 95% CI, 1.04-4.75, NIHSS (OR: 0.88; 95% CI, 0.71-0.89) and the presence in NIHSS of 1a level of consciousness (OR: 5.66; CI: 95% 1.8-16.9), 1b level of consciousness questions (OR: 3.023; 95% CI, 1.35-6.8), facial weakness (OR: 0.3; CI: 95% 0.17-0.8), and sensory abnormalities (OR: 0.27; 95% CI, 0.1-0.72) remained statistically significant., Conclusion: SC had clinical and radiological differences compared to AISER. An additional relevant finding is that neurological symptoms in a patient with atrial fibrillation, even with a negative diffusion-weighted imaging, should be carefully evaluated as a potential stroke until other causes are satisfactorily ruled out., (© 2024 S. The percentage of SC treated with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and the characteristics have not been well described. SCs who underwent IVT were younger (p = 0.01), with higher NIHSS (p = 0.05). They presented more frequently with altered level of consciousness in the NIHSS (p = 0.01), language abnormities (p = 0.001), and dysarthria (p = 0.01). In multivariate analysis, none of the variables were significantly associated with IVT. Background: The sculpting craft must adopt awkward postures that lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)., Objective: This study investigated the prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort (MD) and its associations with postural risk factors, demographics, and work characteristics among sculptors. They were determined the differences between MDs during the weeks of the study., Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted; MD was investigated using the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ). Posture was assessed using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment method (RULA). Multivariate logistic regression (MLR) models analyzed associations with different factors. ANOVA was used to test for differences in MD prevalence., Results: The analysis included 585 responses by body region. The prevalence of MD was high in the lower and upper limbs among sculptors (67.6%), with the lower back, upper arm, neck, and knees being the four most affected regions. Gender (female) (OR = 2.15), marital status (married) (OR = 1.80), health risk (obesity), the dual of a secondary job (OR = 1.94), job stress (OR = 2.10), duration of work (OR = 2.01), and difficulty keeping up with work (OR = 2.00) were significant predictors contributing to the occurrence of MD in different body regions. Only shoulder MD prevalence showed significant differences between study weeks., Conclusions: Sculptors suffer from MD. Demographic and work characteristic factors influence MD prevalence. Postural training, improved adaptation of work organization, and intervention guidance on ergonomic risks may reduce the prevalence of MD and the risk of MSDs in this population.

In this work a systematic study over a wide number of final thermodynamic states for two gel-forming liquids was performed. Such two kind of gel formers are distinguished by their specific interparticle interaction potential. We explored several thermodynamic states determining the thermodynamic, structural and dynamic properties of both liquids after a sudden temperature change. The thermodynamic analysis allows to identify that the liquid with short range attraction and long range repulsion lacks of a stable gas-liquid phase separation liquid, in contrast with the liquid with short range attractions. Thus, although for some thermodynamic states the structural behavior, measured by the static structure factor, is similar to and characteristic of the gel phase, for the short range attractive fluid the gel phase is a consequence of a spinodal decomposition process. In contrast, gelation in the short range attraction and long range repulsion liquid is not due to a phase separation. We also analyze the similarities and differences of the dynamic behavior of both systems through the analysis of the mean square displacement, the self part of the intermediate scattering function, the diffusion coefficient and the α relaxation time. Finally, using one of the main results of the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation theory (NE-SCGLE), we determine the dynamic arrest phase diagram in the volume fraction and temperature ( φ vs T ) plane., (© 2022 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

The time-evolution equation for the time-dependent static structure factor of the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory was used to investigate the kinetics of glass-forming systems under isochoric conditions. The kinetics are studied within the framework of the fictive temperature (T F ) of the glassy structure. We solve for the kinetics of T F (t) and the time-dependent structure factor and find that they are different but closely related by a function that depends only on temperature. Furthermore, we are able to solve for the evolution of T F (t) in a set of temperature-jump histories referred to as the Kovacs' signatures. We demonstrate that the NE-SCGLE theory reproduces all the Kovacs' signatures, namely, intrinsic isotherm, asymmetry of approach, and memory effect. In addition, we extend the theory into largely unexplored, deep glassy state, regions that are below the notionally "ideal" glass temperature.

In this work we implement a machine learning method to predict the thermodynamic state of a liquid using only its microscopic structure provided by the radial distribution function (RDF). The main goal is to determine the equation of state of the system. The goal is achieved by predicting the density, temperature or both at the same time using only the RDF. We implement and train a machine learning feed forward artificial neural network (ANN) to address the different cases of interest where single or simultaneous predictions are done. Due to its versatility, in this study the Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid is used as the reference system. The ANN is trained in a wide range of densities and temperatures, covering the liquid-vapour coexistence, liquid phase and supercritical states. We show that the overall percentage relative error of most of the predictions in different cases of study is around 3%. As a practical case of study we use the ANN predictions to determine the pressure equation of state for different isotherms and we found a very good agreement with respect to the exact results. Our ANN implementation is a versatile and useful tool to predict thermodynamic state variables when some information is unknown and, consequently, to enhance the thermodynamic description of liquids.

In the present work, the Non-Equilibrium Self-Consistent Generalized Langevin Equation (NESCGLE) theory is used to predict the final state of glass-forming liquids subjected to different cooling processes. We show that the NESCGLE theory correctly describes two essential features of the glass transition. Such features are the structural recovery and the dependence of the final state with the cooling rate. We demonstrate that below a particular temperature T c , the system is unable to equilibrate, independently of the cooling rate. We show that the equilibrium state is only reached for the quasistatic process. Additionally, we show how, from the NESCGLE theory, it is possible to deduce a relaxation model of structural recovery, for which we obtain molecular expressions of the parameters.

We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of glass formation in soft thermo-sensitive colloids following two different routes: a gradual increase of the particle number density at constant temperature and an increase of the radius in a fixed volume at constant particle number density. Confocal microscopy experiments and the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory consistently show that the two routes lead to a dynamically comparable state at sufficiently long aging times. However, experiments reveal the presence of moderate but persistent structural differences. Successive cycles of radius decrease and increase lead instead to a reproducible glass state, indicating a suitable route to obtain rejuvenation without using shear fields.

Understanding glasses and the glass transition requires comprehending the nature of the crossover from the ergodic (or equilibrium) regime, in which the stationary properties of the system have no history dependence, to the mysterious glass transition region, where the measured properties are nonstationary and depend on the protocol of preparation. In this work we use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to test the main features of the crossover predicted by the molecular version of the recently developed multicomponent nonequilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation theory. According to this theory, the glass transition involves the abrupt passage from the ordinary pattern of full equilibration to the aging scenario characteristic of glass-forming liquids. The same theory explains that this abrupt transition will always be observed as a blurred crossover due to the unavoidable finiteness of the time window of any experimental observation. We find that within their finite waiting-time window, the simulations confirm the general trends predicted by the theory.

The transformation of fog at a non-visible water layer on a membrane of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) was evaluated. Nonionic surfactants of major demand in the polyolefin industry were studied. A kinetic study using a hot fog chamber showed that condensation is controlled by both the diffusion and permanency of the surfactant more than by the change of the surface energy developed by the wetting agents. The greatest permanency of the anti-fog effect of the LDPE/EVA surface was close to 3000 h. The contact angle results demonstrated the ability of the wetting agent to spread out to the surface. Complementarily, the migration of nonionic surfactants from the inside of the polymeric matrix to the surface was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy. Additionally, electrical measurement on the anti-fogging membrane at alternating currents and at a sweep frequency was proposed to test the conductivity and wetting ability of nonionic surfactants. We proved that the amphiphilic molecules had the ability to increase the conductivity in the polyolefin membrane. A correlation between the bulk electrical conductivity and the permanency of the fogging control on the LDPE/EVA coextruded film was found.

Aim: To characterize the prescribing patterns for hydrocortisone for patients with septic shock and perform an exploratory analysis in order to identify the variables associated with better outcomes., Methods: This prospective cohort study included 59 patients with septic shock who received stress-dose hydrocortisone. It was performed at 2 critical care units in academic hospitals from June 1 st , 2015, to July 31 st , 2016. Demographic data, comorbidities, medical management details, adverse effects related to corticosteroids, and outcomes were collected after the critical care physician indicated initiation of hydrocortisone. Univariate comparison between continuous and bolus administration of hydrocortisone was performed, including multivariate analysis, as well as Kaplan-Meier analysis to compare the proportion of shock reversal at 7 d after presentation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves determined the best cut-off criteria for initiation of hydrocortisone associated with the highest probability of shock reversal. We addressed the effects of the taper strategy for discontinuation of hydrocortisone, noting risk of shock relapse and adverse effects., Results: All-cause 30-d mortality was 42%. Hydrocortisone was administered as a continuous infusion in 54.2% of patients; time to reversal of shock was 49 h longer in patients who were given a bolus administration [59 h (range, 47.5-90.5) vs 108 h (range, 63.2-189); P = 0.001]. The maximal dose of norepinephrine after initiation of hydrocortisone was lower in patients on continuous infusion [0.19 μg/kg per minute (range, 0.11-0.28 μg)] compared with patients who were given bolus [0.34 μg/kg per minute (range, 0.16-0.49); P = 0.004]. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed a higher proportion of shock reversal at 7 d in patients with continuous infusion compared to those given bolus (83% vs 63%; P = 0.004). There was a good correlation between time to initiation of hydrocortisone and time to reversal of shock ( r = 0.80; P < 0.0001); ROC curve analysis revealed that the best criteria for prediction of shock reversal was a time to initiation of hydrocortisone of ≤ 13 h after administration of norepinephrine, with an area under the curve of 0.81 ( P < 0.001). The maximal dose of norepinephrine at initiation of hydrocortisone with the highest association with shock reversal was ≤ 0.28 μg/kg per minute, with an area under the curve of 0.75 ( P = 0.0002). On a logistic regression model, hydrocortisone taper was not associated with a lower risk of shock relapse (RR = 1.29; P = 0.17) but was related to a higher probability of hyperglycemia [odds ratio (OR), 5.3; P = 0.04] and hypokalemia (OR = 10.6; P = 0.01)., Conclusion: Continuous infusion of hydrocortisone could hasten the resolution of septic shock compared to bolus administration. Earlier initiation corresponds with a higher probability of shock reversal. The recent predictions of the self-consistent generalized Langevin equation theory, describing the existence of unusual partially arrested states in the context of ionic liquids, were probed using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of a room-temperature ionic liquid. We have found a slower diffusion of the smaller anions compared with the large cations for a wide range of temperatures. The arrest mechanism consists on the formation of a strongly repulsive glass by the anions, stabilized by the long range electrostatic potential. The diffusion of the less repulsive cations occurs through the holes left by the small particles. All of our observations in the simulated system coincide with the theoretical picture.

In this work, we have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to compare the structural and dynamical properties of three ionic liquids (ILs), 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluorborate ([EMI(+)][BF4(-)]), 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(tetrafluorborate) ([VIO(2+)][BF4(-)]2), and 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (bistriflimide in short) ([VIO(2+)][Tf2N(-)]2), aiming to discover the influence of ion rigidity on the physical properties of ILs. [VIO(2+)] is more rigid than [EMI(+)], and [BF4(-)] is more rigid than [Tf2N(-)]. [VIO(2+)][BF4(-)]2 has an anion distribution different from the other two by the higher and sharper peaks in the cation-anion radial distribution functions, reflecting a close-packed local structure of anions around cations. [VIO(2+)][BF4(-)]2 and [VIO(2+)][Tf2N(-)]2 have similar dynamics much slower than [EMI(+)][BF4(-)], and [VIO(2+)][Tf2N(-)]2 shows a more isotropic molecular distribution than [VIO(2+)][BF4(-)]2 and [EMI(+)][BF4(-)]. Additionally, we have simulated two modified viologen-based ILs to reinforce our interpretations. We conclude from the above simulation results that the rigidity of anions influences the alignment of cations and that the rigidity of cations shows a large obstacle to their rotational capacity. Moreover, we have observed a slower diffusion of [VIO(2+)][BF4(-)]2 due to the electrostatic correlations, which stabilizes the ion-cage effect.

Studies dealing with the effects of changing global temperatures on living organisms typically concentrate on annual mean temperatures. This, however, might not be the best approach in temperate systems with large seasonality where the mean annual temperature is actually not experienced very frequently. The mean annual temperature across a 50-year, daily time series of measurements at Helgoland Roads (54.2° N, 7.9° E) is 10.1°C while seasonal data are characterized by a clear, bimodal distribution; temperatures are around 6°C in winter and 15°C in summer with rapid transitions in spring and autumn. Across those 50 years, the temperature at which growth is maximal for each single bloom event for 115 phytoplankton species (more than 6000 estimates of optimal temperature) mirrors the bimodal distribution of the in situ temperatures. Moreover, independent laboratory data on temperature optima for growth of North Sea organisms yielded similar results: a deviance from the normal distribution, with a gap close to the mean annual temperature, and more optima either above or below this temperature. We conclude that organisms, particularly those that are short-lived, are either adapted to the prevailing winter or summer temperatures in temperate areas and that few species exist with thermal optima within the periods characterized by rapid spring warming and autumn cooling., (© 2016 The Author(s).)

To alleviate the chronic inflammation, nasal obstruction, and loss of sense of smell that produces the rhinosinusitis disease, ordered mesoporous materials and hierarchical zeolites could be used for slow and sustained corticoid (methylprednisolone hemisuccinate conjugate) release. The correlations between the delivery performance of methylprednisolone hemisuccinate and the physicochemical properties of carriers' release systems, including pore mesostructure, texture and size, and surface chemistry, have been well established. Different two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) mesostructured materials (MCM-41, SBA-15, expanded SBA-15, FDU-12, and SBA-16) were employed. In addition, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, materials based on hierarchical zeolites with additional mesoporosity (h-ZSM-5 and h-BETA zeolites) were also tested. In particular, two materials (3-D cubic mesoporous silica SBA-16 and hierarchical Beta zeolite) have been probed to be potential candidates, exhibiting high drug adsorption capacities and slow drug release rates, which is the most favourable way of drug release in the particular rhinosinusitis application. Solid-state 1 H- 29 Si HETCOR NMR analyses confirm the strong interactions of the drug with the surface of h-BETA and 3-D SBA-16 materials, via hydrogen bonding of carboxylic, ketone, and aliphatic moieties of the methylprednisolone hemisuccinate at surface silanol sites. Because of the remarkable release performance, it is expected that 3-D mesoporous silica SBA-16 and hierarchical Beta zeolite can be attractive candidates for current applications in nasal inflammation treatments. The drug release rate can be further retarded by decreasing the pH to around 4.6; at this point more attraction forces were detected as proved by zeta-potential measurements. Therefore, a slower delivery trend of methylprednisolone hemisuccinate has been observed for all the materials, which is more pronounced in the case of SBA-15 and SBA-16.

We employ the principle of dynamic equivalence between soft-sphere and hard-sphere fluids [Phys. Rev. E 68, 011405 (2003)] to describe the interplay of the effects of varying the density n, the temperature T, and the softness (characterized by a softness parameter ν(-1)) on the dynamics of glass-forming soft-sphere liquids in terms of simple scaling rules. The main prediction is the existence of a dynamic universality class associated with the hard-sphere fluid, constituted by the soft-sphere systems whose dynamic parameters depend on n, T, and ν only through the reduced density n*≡nσ(HS)(T*,ν). A number of scaling properties observed in recent experiments and simulations involving glass-forming fluids with repulsive short-range interactions are found to be a direct manifestation of this general dynamic equivalence principle.

We report a systematic molecular dynamics study of the isochoric equilibration of hard-sphere fluids in their metastable regime close to the glass transition. The thermalization process starts with the system prepared in a nonequilibrium state with the desired final volume fraction ϕ for which we can obtain a well-defined nonequilibrium static structure factor S(0)(k;ϕ). The evolution of the α-relaxation time τ(α)(k) and long-time self-diffusion coefficient D(L) as a function of the evolution time t(w) is then monitored for an array of volume fractions. For a given waiting time the plot of τ(α)(k;ϕ,t(w)) as a function of ϕ exhibits two regimes corresponding to samples that have fully equilibrated within this waiting time [ϕ≤ϕ(c)(t(w))] and to samples for which equilibration is not yet complete [ϕ≥ϕ(c)(t(w))]. The crossover volume fraction ϕ(c)(t(w)) increases with t(w) but seems to saturate to a value ϕ(a)≡ϕ(c)(t(w)→∞)≈0.582. We also find that the waiting time t(w)(eq)(ϕ) required to equilibrate a system grows faster than the corresponding equilibrium relaxation time, t(w)(eq)(ϕ)≈0.27[τ(α)(eq)(k;ϕ)](1.43), and that both characteristic times increase strongly as ϕ approaches ϕ(a), thus suggesting that the measurement of equilibrium properties at and above ϕ(a) is experimentally impossible.

The concept of dynamic equivalence among mono-disperse soft-sphere fluids is employed in the framework of the self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (SCGLE) theory of colloid dynamics to calculate the ideal glass transition phase diagram of model soft-sphere colloidal dispersions in the softness-concentration state space. The slow dynamics predicted by this theory near the glass transition is compared with available experimental data for the decay of the intermediate scattering function of colloidal dispersions of soft-microgel particles. Increasing deviations from this simple scheme occur for increasingly softer potentials, and this is studied here using the Rogers-Young static structure factor of the soft-sphere systems as the input of the SCGLE theory, without assuming a priori the validity of the equivalence principle above.

The self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (SCGLE) theory of colloid dynamics is employed to describe the ergodic-non-ergodic transition in model mono-disperse colloidal dispersions whose particles interact through hard-sphere plus short-ranged attractive forces. The ergodic-non-ergodic phase diagram in the temperature-concentration state space is determined for the hard-sphere plus attractive Yukawa model within the mean spherical approximation for the static structure factor by solving a remarkably simple equation for the localization length of the colloidal particles. Finite real values of this property signals non-ergodicity and determines the non-ergodic parameters f(k) and f(s)(k). The resulting phase diagram for this system, which involves the existence of reentrant (repulsive and attractive) glass states, is compared with the corresponding prediction of mode coupling theory. Although both theories coincide in the general features of this phase diagram, there are also clear qualitative differences. One of the most relevant is the SCGLE prediction that the ergodic-attractive glass transition does not preempt the gas-liquid phase transition, but always intersects the corresponding spinodal curve on its high-concentration side. We also calculate the ergodic-non-ergodic phase diagram for the sticky hard-sphere model to illustrate the dependence of the predicted SCGLE dynamic phase diagram on the choice of one important constituent element of the SCGLE theory.

Objective: To assess the concentration of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1beta in saliva of periodontally diseased and healthy patients and their relationship with the periodontal status., Design: Unstimulated whole saliva samples from patients with chronic periodontitis (n=30), aggressive periodontitis (n=18) and healthy controls (n=18) were obtained for the study. The periodontal status of each subject was assessed by criteria based on probing depth, clinical attachment loss and the extent/severity of periodontal breakdown. The levels of IL-1beta were measured in saliva samples with a high sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)., Results: Although no significant difference (P=0.624) was found for salivary IL-1beta levels between periodontitis groups, they were significantly greater (P<0.01) than those detected for healthy controls. Furthermore, Spearman correlation analysis showed statistically significant correlations (P<0.01) between data from salivary IL-1beta levels and clinical measurements., Conclusion: The findings of the present study reemphasize the importance of whole saliva as sampling method in terms of immunological purposes in periodontal disease and suggest that the elevated IL-1beta concentration may be one of the host-response components associated to the clinical manifestations of periodontal disease.

One of the main elements of the self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (SCGLE) theory of colloid dynamics [Phys. Rev. E 62, 3382 (2000); 72, 031107 (2005)] is the introduction of exact short-time moment conditions in its formulation. The need to previously calculate these exact short-time properties constitutes a practical barrier for its application. In this Brief Report, we report that a simplified version of this theory, in which this short-time information is eliminated, leads to the same results in the intermediate and long-time regimes. Deviations are only observed at short times, and are not qualitatively or quantitatively important. This is illustrated by comparing the two versions of the theory for representative model systems.

Objective: To analyze both clinical and surgical characteristics of patients with no oncologic diseases treated with any variant of laparoscopic hysterectomy during the 1996-2005 period in Hospital Español de Mexico, and compare them with the reported in literature., Method and Patients: Retrospective, longitudinal, descriptive, not experimental. Total 376 patients; group 1, 204 with laparoscopic hysterectomy; group 2, 157 laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy; group 3, 15 laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy., Results: Mean age similar for each group (43.9, 44.4 and 44.8), larger numberof patients with at least one previous vaginal delivery compared with cesarean in the first two groups (65.7 vs 55.5%, 77.7 vs. 15.2%); identical in the third group (40 vs. 40%). The 51.5% had at least one previous gynecological-obstetric surgery (52.9, 49.0 and 60%). The mean uterine length was similar in the 3 groups (9.6, 9.8 y 10.9 cm). The most predominant diagnosis was uterine leiomyomata (75, 50.6 and 73.3%). The mean surgical time was shorter in the third group (159.5, 158 and 117.6 min.). Hospital stay was shorter in the third group (2.6, 2.9 and 2.2 days). Group 3 had no minor or major complications. The corresponding major complications was 1.9% (group 1) and 1.8% (group 2); minor complications was 4.9% y 3.1% for groups 1 and two respectively., Conclusions: There were no significant differences between the clinical and surgical characteristics regarding patients and surgical procedure, therefore they could be offered for the vast majority of patients with no oncologic disease.

This paper presents a recently developed theory of colloid dynamics as an alternative approach to the description of phenomena of dynamic arrest in monodisperse colloidal systems. Such theory, referred to as the self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (SCGLE) theory, was devised to describe the tracer and collective diffusion properties of colloidal dispersions in the short- and intermediate-time regimes. Its self-consistent character, however, introduces a nonlinear dynamic feedback, leading to the prediction of dynamic arrest in these systems, similar to that exhibited by the well-established mode coupling theory of the ideal glass transition. The full numerical solution of this self-consistent theory provides in principle a route to the location of the fluid-glass transition in the space of macroscopic parameters of the system, given the interparticle forces (i.e., a nonequilibrium analog of the statistical-thermodynamic prediction of an equilibrium phase diagram). In this paper we focus on the derivation from the same self-consistent theory of the more straightforward route to the location of the fluid-glass transition boundary, consisting of the equation for the nonergodic parameters, whose nonzero values are the signature of the glass state. This allows us to decide if a system, at given macroscopic conditions, is in an ergodic or in a dynamically arrested state, given the microscopic interactions, which enter only through the static structure factor. We present a selection of results that illustrate the concrete application of our theory to model colloidal systems. This involves the comparison of the predictions of our theory with available experimental data for the nonergodic parameters of model dispersions with hard-sphere and with screened Coulomb interactions.

In this study the antireflux effect of Antacid/Alginic Acid compound (Batynid (R)) was prospectively evaluated assessed by radionuclide technique. Patients were divided in 2 groups: mild esophagitis 13 patients and severe esophagitis 13 patients. The radionuclide study was done before and posterior ingestion of the compound evaluating duration, severity and number of the reflux episodes. The results show no significant differences comparing gastroesophageal reflux pre and post Batynid, in both group of patients, considering all parameters studied.
