4. Prime ideals of Moh and the characteristic of the field

Abstract

We reprove and generalize a result of Moh which bounds the minimal number of generators of an ideal in a power series ring in three variables over a field. As a consequence, we obtain minimal generating sets for the first prime of Moh, proving that the minimal number of generators might decrease depending on the field characteristic. This contradicts an statement of Sally. Finally, we show that these minimal generating sets are standard basis with the negative degree reverse lexicographic order.

Abstract

Let $S$ be the numerical semigroup generated by three consecutive numbers $a,a+1,a+2$, where $a\in\mathbb{N}$, $a\geq 3$. We describe the elements of $S$ whose factorizations have all the same length, as well as the set of factorizations of each of these elements. We give natural partitions of this subset of $S$ in terms of the length and the denumerant. By using Ap\'ery sets and Betti elements we are able to extend some results, first obtained by elementary means.

Abstract

Interest in automatic people re-identification systems has significantly grown in recent years, mainly for developing surveillance and smart shops software. Due to the variability in person posture, different lighting conditions, and occluded scenarios, together with the poor quality of the images obtained by different cameras, it is currently an unsolved problem. In machine learning-based computer vision applications with reduced data sets, one possibility to improve the performance of re-identification system is through the augmentation of the set of images or videos available for training the neural models. Currently, one of the most robust ways to generate synthetic information for data augmentation, whether it is video, images or text, are the generative adversarial networks. This article reviews the most relevant recent approaches to improve the performance of person re-identification models through data augmentation, using generative adversarial networks. We focus on three categories of data augmentation approaches: style transfer, pose transfer, and random generation.

Abstract

Computational studies have shown that one or more positrons can stabilize two repelling atomic anions through the formation of two-center positronic bonds. In the present work, we study the energetic stability of a system containing two positrons and three hydride anions, namely 2\ce{e^+[H^{3-}_3]}. To this aim, we performed a preliminary scan of the potential energy surface of the system with both electrons and positron in a spin singlet state, with a multi-component MP2 method, that was further refined with variational and diffusion Monte Carlo calculations, and confirmed an equilibrium geometry with \ce{D_${3h}$} symmetry. The local stability of 2\ce{e^+[H^{3-}_3]} is demonstrated by analyzing the vertical detachment and adiabatic energy dissociation channels. Bonding properties of the positronic compound, such as the equilibrium interatomic distances, force constants, dissociation energies, and bonding densities are compared with those of the purely electronic \ce{H^+_3} and \ce{Li^+_3} systems. Through this analysis, we find compelling similarities between the 2\ce{e^+[H^{3-}_3]} compound and the trilithium cation. Our results strongly point out the formation of a non-electronic three-center two-positron bond, analogous to the well known three-center two-electron counterparts, which is fundamentally distinct from the two-center two-positron bond [D. Abstract

Novel significance tests are proposed for the quite general additive concurrent model formulation without the need of model, error structure preliminary estimation or the use of tuning parameters. Making use of the martingale difference divergence coefficient, we propose new tests to measure the conditional mean independence in the concurrent model framework taking under consideration all observed time instants. In particular, global dependence tests to quantify the effect of a group of covariates in the response as well as partial ones to apply covariates selection are introduced. Their asymptotic distribution is obtained on each case and a bootstrap algorithm is proposed to compute its p-values in practice. These new procedures are tested by means of simulation studies and some real datasets analysis.

Abstract

We study the limitations of the well known LASSO regression as a variable selector when there exists dependence structures among covariates. We analyze both the classic situation with $n\geq p$ and the high dimensional framework with $p>n$. Restrictive properties of this methodology to guarantee optimality, as well as the inconveniences in practice, are analyzed. Examples of these drawbacks are showed by means of a extensive simulation study, making use of different dependence scenarios. In order to search for improvements, a broad comparison with LASSO derivatives and alternatives is carried out. 50. Teachers' Perception of an Integrated Approach to Biology and Emotional Learning

Abstract

Inclusive education requires that teachers not only teach academic knowledge and skills, but also consider the individual needs of all pupils, especially with respect to their social-emotional status. All teachers (including science and biology teachers) have to promote the wellbeing of their pupils by helping them develop social-emotional skills. The positive impact of these skills has been widely researched and documented. There is no doubt that academic achievements and social-emotional skills go hand in hand. However, only very little research data are available on how biology lessons and biology teachers can facilitate inclusive education in everyday school. The purpose of this qualitative study is to find out how teachers perceive an integrated approach in biology classes. This study reports on the experiences of five biology teachers with an integrated approach in which learning about the human body was intertwined with socio-emotional learning to address all pupils' needs. Overall, the teachers considered the use and implementation of the approach a success. They observed that the pupils were motivated and showed a high level of active involvement and participation. However, it became obvious that the teachers did not fully realize all elements of the approach--the intertwined biological and emotional learning in particular--although they liked it. Finally, our findings show that a practical way to teach science and emotional learning can be realized in common, but teachers need further support and professional development.
