Abstract

The design of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition targets requires radiation-hydrodynamics simulations with accurate models of the fundamental material properties (i.e., equation of state, opacity, and conductivity). Validation of these models are required via experimentation. A feasibility study of using spatially-integrated, spectrally-resolved, X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) measurements to diagnose the temperature, density, and ionization of the compressed DT shell and hot spot of a laser direct-drive implosion at two-thirds convergence was conducted. Synthetic scattering spectra were generated using 1-D implosion simulations from the LILAC code that were post processed with the X-ray Scattering (XRS) model which is incorporated within SPECT3D. Analysis of two extreme adiabat capsule conditions showed that the plasma conditions for both compressed DT shells could be resolved., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Perturbations in the velocity profile of a laser-ablation-driven shock wave seeded by speckle in the spatial beam intensity (i.e., laser imprint) have been measured. Direct measurements of these velocity perturbations were recorded using a two-dimensional high-resolution velocimeter probing plastic material shocked by a 100-ps picket laser pulse from the OMEGA laser system. The measured results for experiments with one, two, and five overlapping beams incident on the target clearly demonstrate a reduction in long-wavelength ($>$25 um) perturbations with an increasing number of overlapping laser beams, consistent with theoretical expectations. These experimental measurements are crucial to validate radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of laser imprint for laser direct drive inertial confinement fusion research since they highlight the significant (factor of 3) underestimation of the level of seeded perturbation when the microphysics processes for initial plasma formation, such as multiphoton ionization are neglected., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Refraction-enhanced x-ray radiography (REXR) is used to infer shock-wave positions of more than one shock wave, launched by a multiple-picket pulse in a planar plastic foil. This includes locating shock waves before the shocks merge, during the early time and the main drive of the laser pulse that is not possible with the velocity interferometer system for any reflector. Simulations presented in this paper of REXR show that it is necessary to incorporate refraction and attenuation of x rays along with the appropriate opacity and refractive-index tables to interpret experimental images. Simulated REXR shows good agreement with an experiment done on the OMEGA laser facility to image a shock wave. REXR can be applied to design multiple-picket pulses with a better understanding of the shock locations. This will be beneficial to obtain the required adiabats for inertial confinement fusion implosions.

Abstract

This paper describes a technique for identifying trends in performance degradation for inertial confinement fusion implosion experiments. It is based on reconstruction of the implosion core with a combination of low- and mid-mode asymmetries. This technique was applied to an ensemble of hydro-equivalent deuterium-tritium implosions on OMEGA that achieved inferred hot-spot pressures ~56+/-7 Gbar [S. Regan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 025001 (2016)]. All the experimental observables pertaining to the core could be reconstructed simultaneously with the same combination of low and mid modes. This suggests that in addition to low modes, that can cause a degradation of the stagnation pressure, mid modes are present that reduce the size of the neuron and x-ray producing volume. The systematic analysis shows that asymmetries can cause an overestimation of the total areal density in these implosions. It is also found that an improvement in implosion symmetry resulting from correction of either the systematic mid or low modes would result in an increase of the hot-spot pressure from 56 Gbar to ~80 Gbar and could produce a burning plasma when the implosion core is extrapolated to an equivalent 1.9 MJ symmetric direct illumination [A. Abstract

Understanding and designing inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions through radiation-hydrodynamics simulations rely on the accurate knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) of the deuterium and tritium fuels. To minimize the drive energy for ignition, the imploding shell of DT fuel must be kept as cold as possible. Such low-adiabat ICF implosions can access to coupled and degenerate plasma conditions, in which the analytical or chemical EOS models become inaccurate. Using the path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations we have derived a first-principles EOS (FPEOS) table of deuterium that covers typical ICF fuel conditions at densities ranging from 0.002 to 1596 g/cm3 and temperatures of 1.35 eV to 5.5 keV. We report the internal energy and the pressure, and discuss the structure of the plasma in terms of pair-correlation functions. When compared with the widely used SESAME table and the revised Kerley03 table, discrepancies in the internal energy and in the pressure are identified for moderately coupled and degenerate plasma conditions. In contrast to the SESAME table, the revised Kerley03 table is in better agreement with our FPEOS results over a wide range of densities and temperatures. Although subtle differences still exist for lower temperatures (T < 10 eV) and moderate densities (1 to 10 g/cc), hydrodynamics simulations of cryogenic ICF implosions using the FPEOS table and the Kerley03 table have resulted in similar results for the peak density, areal density ({\rho}R), and neutron yield, which are significantly different from the SESAME simulations., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, 1 long table

Abstract

Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) with the laser-indirect-drive scheme has recently made a tremendous breakthrough recently after decades of intensive research effort. Taking this success to the next step, the ICF community is coming to a general consensus that laser direct-drive (LDD) fusion might be the viable way for enabling inertial fusion energy (IFE) and high-gain targets for other applications. Designing and understanding LDD fusion targets heavily rely on radiation-hydrodynamic code simulations, in which charged-particle transport plays an essential role in modeling laser-target energy coupling and bootstrap heating of fusion-produced α-particles. To better simulate charged-particle transport in LDD targets, over the past four decades the plasma physics community has advanced transport calculations from simple plasma physics models to sophisticated computations based on first-principles methods. In this review, we give an overview of the current status of charged-particle transport modeling for LDD fusion, including what challenges we still face and the possible paths moving forward to advance transport modeling for ICF simulations. We hope this review will provide a summary of exciting challenges to stimulate young minds to enter the field, facilitate further progress in understanding warm-dense matter physics, and ultimately bridge toward the success of reliable LDD fusion designs for IFE and other high-gain ICF applications. Abstract

In direct-drive inertial confinement fusion, target offset from the target chamber center (or center of beam convergence) may lead to significant implosion asymmetry and fusion yield degradation. In addition, cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) has been shown to be a significant source of laser energy scattering and leads to a reduction in implosion velocity and yield. To improve energy coupling and implosion performance, several techniques for CBET mitigation have been proposed. Recent simulations, however, have shown that CBET also substantially mitigates the effect of target offset on implosion asymmetry and yield [Anderson et al., Phys. Plasmas 27, 112713 (2020)]. Furthermore, the inclusion of CBET models in radiation-hydrodynamics codes was shown to greatly improve agreement between simulations and experiments involving substantial target offset distances. This paper explores the intensity dependence of this CBET–offset effect. In addition, it is shown that enhanced sensitivity to target offset can be expected when CBET-mitigation techniques are used in direct-drive implosions. This is shown through simulations of two such CBET-mitigation techniques on the OMEGA laser: (1) decreased beam-to-target radius, and (2) beam-to-beam frequency detuning. For the typical target offset distances (<15 μm) observed in experiments on OMEGA, however, overall yield is still anticipated to be substantially higher when CBET-mitigation techniques are employed. The article is devoted to the study of the theoretical and methodological foundations of strategic financial planning of domestic business entities and the development of practical recommendations for improving its effectiveness in modern conditions. Foreign experience in the implementation of strategic financial planning was studied, which made it possible to compare the practice of developed countries with domestic experience and determine the directions for the implementation of foreign experience in domestic practice. The similarity is due to the common conditions for the functioning of economic entities of these states, since they all operate in highly developed market economies that are interested in developing and improving the means of competition. The uniqueness of approaches to the financial planning of economic activity of economic entities, associated primarily with the peculiarity of information systems adapted to domestic needs, is noted. The article is devoted to the study of the theoretical and methodological foundations of strategic financial planning of domestic business entities and the development of practical recommendations for improving its effectiveness in modern conditions. Foreign experience in the implementation of strategic financial planning was studied, which made it possible to compare the practice of developed countries with domestic experience and determine the directions for the implementation of foreign experience in domestic practice. The similarity is due to the common conditions for the functioning of economic entities of these states,since they all operate in highly developed market economies that are interested in developing and improving the means of competition. The uniqueness of approaches to the financial planning of economic activity of economic entities, associated primarily with the peculiarity of information systems adapted to domestic needs, is noted. В нестабильных социально-экономических условиях ЛНР определение оптимального баланса экономических, социальных иэкологических задач в системе устойчивого развития предпринимательских структур мясоперерабатывающей отрасли напрямую связано со структурированием имеющихся ресурсов и рационализацией управленческих решений по трансформации данных ресурсов в необходимые для функционирования предприятия производственные активы.
