Abstract

A dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators was reported almost a decade ago. According to this view only slowly spinning stars with rotation periods longer than 5-10 days would host planets with orbital periods shorter than 2 or 3 days. This Letter brings an enlarged and more detailed analysis that led us to the question: Is there really a dearth in that distribution or is it a dearth of data? For this new analysis, we combined different samples of Kepler and TESS stars with confirmed planets or planet candidates with measured stellar rotation periods, using Gaia data to perform an in-depth selection of 1013 planet-hosting main-sequence stars. With the newer, enlarged, and more refined data, the reported dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators tends to disappear, thus suggesting that it may reflect a scarcity of data in the prior analysis. A two sample statistical test strongly supports our results, showing that the distribution of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators is almost indistinguishable from that for close-in planets orbiting slow rotators., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Abstract

This thesis describes investigations on the inclusion of realistic considerations in vibration serviceability assessment of low-frequency steel-concrete composite office floors, aiming to represent their in-service conditions. The motivation for the research works presented is the continuous reporting of excessive vertical vibrations induced by walking loads in modern office floors that feature lightweight, slender, long-span structures, with "column-free" open-plan areas. The contribution of this thesis to knowledge is the 1) vibration serviceability check of framing configurations with both short- and long-span secondary beams, 2) investigation of modal properties and dynamic response of office floors with voids and layouts of full-height partitions, 3) serviceability assessment using calibrated vibration dose values, considering both different number of walk events and statistical distribution of pacing rates, and 5) environmental impact of modifications of floor depth and steel beam profiles to reduce floor vibrations. It was found that structural modifications can result in floors with excessive consumption of materials and high carbon footprint. Also, the consideration of voids and partitions led to a more realistic response, with excessive vibrations limited to a few panels, which suggests the use of local vibration control measures, instead of modifications on the whole structure. Finally, the use of calibrated vibration dose values with realistic assumptions resulted in leaner structures, depending on the acceptable limits used.

Abstract

A precise characterization of the incoming proton bunch parameters is required to accurately simulate the self-modulation process in the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE). This paper presents an analysis of the parameters of the incoming proton bunches used in the later stages of the AWAKE Run 1 data-taking period. The transverse structure of the bunch is observed at multiple positions along the beamline using scintillating or optical transition radiation screens. The parameters of a model that describes the bunch transverse dimensions and divergence are fitted to represent the observed data using Bayesian inference. The analysis is tested on simulated data and then applied to the experimental data.

Abstract

We present numerical simulations and experimental results of the self-modulation of a long proton bunch in a plasma with linear density gradients along the beam path. Simulation results agree with the experimental results reported in arXiv:2007.14894v2: with negative gradients, the charge of the modulated bunch is lower than with positive gradients. In addition, the bunch modulation frequency varies with gradient. Simulation results show that dephasing of the wakefields with respect to the relativistic protons along the plasma is the main cause for the loss of charge. The study of the modulation frequency reveals details about the evolution of the self-modulation process along the plasma. In particular for negative gradients, the modulation frequency across time-resolved images of the bunch indicates the position along the plasma where protons leave the wakefields. Abstract

We use a relativistic ionization front to provide various initial transverse wakefield amplitudes for the self-modulation of a long proton bunch in plasma. We show experimentally that, with sufficient initial amplitude ($\ge(4.1\pm0.4)$ MV/m), the phase of the modulation along the bunch is reproducible from event to event, with 3 to 7% (of 2$\pi$) rms variations all along the bunch. The phase is not reproducible for lower initial amplitudes. We observe the transition between these two regimes. The global convergence analysis of the proposed method is established under suitable conditions, and some preliminary numerical experiments are given to illustrate its performance.

Abstract

Magnetic skyrmions are mesmerizing spin textures with peculiar topological and dynamical properties, typically the product of competing interactions in ferromagnets, and with great technological potential [1-5]. Researchers have long wondered whether analogous electric skyrmions might exist in ferroelectrics, maybe featuring novel behaviors and possibilities for electric and mechanical control. The results thus far are modest, though: an electric equivalent of the most typical magnetic skyrmion (which would rely on a counterpart of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction) seems all but impossible; further, the exotic ferroelectric orders observed or predicted to date [6-8] rely on very specific nano-structures (composites, superlattices), which limits the generality and properties (e.g., mobility) of the possible associated skyrmions. Here we propose an original approach to write electric skyrmions in simple ferroelectric lattices in a customary manner. Our second-principles simulations [9] of columnar ferroelectric nano-domains, in prototype compound PbTiO3 , show that it is possible to harness the Bloch-type internal structure of the domain wall [10] and hence create a genuine skyrmion. We check that the object thus obtained displays the usual skyrmion-defining features; further, it also presents unusual ones, including a symmetry-breaking skyrmion-skyrmion transition driven by strain, various types of topological transformations induced by external fields and temperature, and potentially very small sizes. Our results suggest countless possibilities for creating and manipulating electric textures with non-trivial topologies, using standard experimental tools and materials, effectively inaugurating the field of electric skyrmions., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figures

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an inexact Newton-like conditional gradient method for solving constrained systems of nonlinear equations. The local convergence of the new method as well as results on its rate are established by using a general majorant condition. Two applications of such condition are provided: one is for functions whose the derivative satisfies Holder-like condition and the other is for functions that satisfies a Smale condition, which includes a substantial class of analytic functions. Some preliminaries numerical experiments illustrating the applicability of the proposed method for medium and large problems are also presented.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the iteration-complexity of a generalized alternating direction method of multipliers (G-ADMM) for solving linearly constrained convex problems. This ADMM variant, which was first proposed by Bertsekas and Eckstein, introduces a relaxation parameter $\alpha \in (0,2)$ into the second ADMM subproblem. Our approach is to show that the G-ADMM is an instance of a hybrid proximal extragradient framework with some special properties, and, as a by product, we obtain ergodic iteration-complexity for the G-ADMM with $\alpha\in (0,2]$, improving and complementing related results in the literature. Additionally, we also present pointwise iteration-complexity for the G-ADMM.

Abstract

In this paper, we extend the improved pointwise iteration-complexity result of a dynamic regularized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for a new stepsize domain. In this complexity analysis, the stepsize parameter can even be chosen in the interval $(0,2)$ instead of interval $(0,(1+\sqrt{5})/2)$. As usual, our analysis is established by interpreting this ADMM variant as an instance of a hybrid proximal extragradient framework applied to a specific monotone inclusion problem.

Abstract

This article describes the rationale, aims, and methodology of the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® Schizophrenia (AMP® SCZ). This is the largest international collaboration to date that will develop algorithms to predict trajectories and outcomes of individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis and to advance the development and use of novel pharmacological interventions for CHR individuals. We present a description of the participating research networks and the data processing analysis and coordination center, their processes for data harmonization across 43 sites from 13 participating countries (recruitment across North America, Australia, Europe, Asia, and South America), data flow and quality assessment processes, data analyses, and the transfer of data to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Archive (NDA) for use by the research community. In an expected sample of approximately 2000 CHR individuals and 640 matched healthy controls, AMP SCZ will collect clinical, environmental, and cognitive data along with multimodal biomarkers, including neuroimaging, electrophysiology, fluid biospecimens, speech and facial expression samples, novel measures derived from digital health technologies including smartphone-based daily surveys, and passive sensing as well as actigraphy. The study will investigate a range of clinical outcomes over a 2-year period, including transition to psychosis, remission or persistence of CHR status, attenuated positive symptoms, persistent negative symptoms, mood and anxiety symptoms, and psychosocial functioning. The global reach of AMP SCZ and its harmonized innovative methods promise to catalyze the development of new treatments to address critical unmet clinical and public health needs in CHR individuals.

37. Characterisation of cycling tumour hypoxia with magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract

Hypoxia is defined by a low oxygen concentration state in biological tissue, resulting from an imbalance between oxygen supply and demand. Greater understanding of hypoxia in tumours is essential, as it is associated with disease progression and resistance to therapy, leading therefore to a poorer prognosis. Tumour hypoxia can be classified into two types: chronic and cycling, and this thesis focuses on characterising cycling hypoxia in colorectal carcinoma tumours in mice. For that, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used, as it provides a non-invasive method to dynamically map blood oxygenation changes due to the different magnetic properties of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. The first approach to characterise cycling tumour hypoxia consisted of a longitudinal study in which the influence of the tumour size on the occurrence, frequency and amplitude of cycling events was investigated. These observations were complemented with tumour vascular properties, inferred from applied vasoactive gas challenges, with blood sampling assessments, and with histological assessments. The influence of systemic variations in blood oxygenation in cycling tumour hypoxia was demonstrated through simultaneous acquisition of MRI and blood oxygen saturation trends. In particular, the computational implementation of independent component analysis (ICA) allowed the identification of the tumour regions that were simultaneously suffering from systemic and tumour-specific effects, and revealed links to tumour pathophysiology. The effect of a therapy on cycling tumour hypoxia was also assessed under the hypothesis of a "vascular normalisation" effect of the drug. In addition, the effects of the therapy on gas challenge response and on histological distributions were studied. This dynamic MRI technique and the ICA protocol were ultimately adapted to a translational study, where cycling hypoxia was investigated as a biomarker for early detection of prostate tumours. Overall, this thesis revealed that the stage of the tumour development can influence some aspects related to cycling hypoxia, and that its occurrence has a contribution of local and systemic effects. Also, it drew attention to the regional effects a therapy can have in tumours and provided a starting point to assess cycling tumour hypoxia in the clinic.

Abstract

Background: In contrast to adults, the situation for pediatric trauma care from an international point of view and the global management of severely injured children remain rather unclear. The current study investigates structural management of pediatric trauma in centers of different trauma levels as well as experiences with pediatric trauma management around the world. Methods: A web-survey had been distributed to the global mailing list of the World Society of Emergency Surgery from 10/2021–03/2022, investigating characteristics of respondents and affiliated hospitals, case-load of pediatric trauma patients, capacities and infrastructure for critical care in children, trauma team composition, clinical work-up and individual experiences with pediatric trauma management in response to patients ́ age. The collaboration group was subdivided regarding sizes of affiliated hospitals to allow comparisons concerning hospital volumes. Comparable results were conducted to statistical analysis. Results: A total of 133 participants from 34 countries, i.e. 5 continents responded to the survey. They were most commonly affiliated with larger hospitals (> 500 beds in 72.9%) and with level I or II trauma centers (82.0%), respectively. 74.4% of hospitals offer unrestricted pediatric medical care, but only 63.2% and 42.9% of the participants had sufficient experiences with trauma care in children ≤ 10 and ≤ 5 years of age (p = 0.0014). This situation is aggravated in participants from smaller hospitals (p < 0.01). With regard to hospital size (≤ 500 versus > 500 in-hospital beds), larger hospitals were more likely affiliated with advanced trauma centers, more elaborated pediatric intensive care infrastructure (p < 0.0001), treated children at all ages more frequently (p = 0.0938) and have higher case-loads of severely injured children < 12 years of age (p = 0.0009). Abstract

The Gauss-Newton's method for solving nonlinear least squares problems is studied in this paper. Under the hypothesis that the derivative of the function associated with the least square problem satisfies a majorant condition, a local convergence analysis is presented. This analysis allow us to obtain the optimal convergence radius, the biggest range for the uniqueness of solution, and to unify two previous and unrelated results.
