1. CLOWN: The PASO cloud detection for optimization of automatic optical surveys

Abstract

Orbiting space objects have become in the last decade a major nuisance impacting ground astronomy and orbiting space assets, from observatories to satellites and space stations. In particular with the rise of the satellite population in Low Earth Orbits (LEOs), space objects are becoming an even bigger threat and a strong problem to astronomical observations. To tackle these threats several coordinated surveillance networks composed of dedicated sensors (telescopes, radars and laser ranging facilities) track and survey space objects, from debris to active satellites. As part of the European Space Surveillance \& Tracking (EU-SST) network, Portugal is developing the PAmpilhosa da Serra Space Observatory (PASO), with both radio and optical telescopes dedicated to the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) domain, deployed at a Dark Sky destination. To optimize telescope survey time, we developed {\tt{CLOWN}} (CLOud Watcher at Night), an application interface that automatically monitors clouds in real time. This software can correctly trace clouds positions in the sky, provides accurate pointing information to the observation planning of the optical telescope to avoid cloudy areas. {\tt{CLOWN}} only requires the use of an all-sky camera, which is already a norm in observatories with optical telescopes and can be used with any camera, including those for which no information about its model specification do exist. {\tt{CLOWN}} does not require great computing power and it does not require the installation of additional equipment. {\tt{CLOWN}} results are very promising and confirm that the app can correctly identify clouds in a variety of different conditions and cloud types., Comment: 15 pages, 22 figures. Abstract

The Pampilhosa da Serra Space Observatory (PASO) is located in the center of the continental Portuguese territory, in the heart of a certified Dark Sky destination by the Starlight Foundation (Aldeias do Xisto) and has been an instrumental asset to advance science, education and astrotourism certifications. PASO hosts astronomy and Space Situational Awareness (SSA) activities including a node of the Portuguese Space Surveillance \& Tracking (SST) infrastructure network, such as a space radar currently in test phase using GEM radiotelescope, a double Wide Field of View Telescope system, a EUSST optical sensor telescope. These instruments allow surveillance of satellite and space debris in LEO, MEO and GEO orbits. The WFOV telescope offers spectroscopy capabilities enabling light curve analysis and cosmic sources monitoring. 3. Non-autoregressive Sequence-to-Sequence Vision-Language Models

Abstract

Sequence-to-sequence vision-language models are showing promise, but their applicability is limited by their inference latency due to their autoregressive way of generating predictions. We propose a parallel decoding sequence-to-sequence vision-language model, trained with a Query-CTC loss, that marginalizes over multiple inference paths in the decoder. This allows us to model the joint distribution of tokens, rather than restricting to conditional distribution as in an autoregressive model. The resulting model, NARVL, achieves performance on-par with its state-of-the-art autoregressive counterpart, but is faster at inference time, reducing from the linear complexity associated with the sequential generation of tokens to a paradigm of constant time joint inference., Comment: Accepted to CVPR 2024

5. Techniques for combining fast local decoders with global decoders under circuit-level noise

Abstract

Implementing algorithms on a fault-tolerant quantum computer will require fast decoding throughput and latency times to prevent an exponential increase in buffer times between the applications of gates. In this work we begin by quantifying these requirements. We then introduce the construction of local neural network (NN) decoders using three-dimensional convolutions. These local decoders are adapted to circuit-level noise and can be applied to surface code volumes of arbitrary size. Their application removes errors arising from a certain number of faults, which serves to substantially reduce the syndrome density. Remaining errors can then be corrected by a global decoder, such as Blossom or Union Find, with their implementation significantly accelerated due to the reduced syndrome density. However, in the circuit-level setting, the corrections applied by the local decoder introduce many vertical pairs of highlighted vertices. To obtain a low syndrome density in the presence of vertical pairs, we consider a strategy of performing a syndrome collapse which removes many vertical pairs and reduces the size of the decoding graph used by the global decoder. We also consider a strategy of performing a vertical cleanup, which consists of removing all local vertical pairs prior to implementing the global decoder. 6. MATrIX -- Modality-Aware Transformer for Information eXtraction

Abstract

We present MATrIX - a Modality-Aware Transformer for Information eXtraction in the Visual Document Understanding (VDU) domain. VDU covers information extraction from visually rich documents such as forms, invoices, receipts, tables, graphs, presentations, or advertisements. In these, text semantics and visual information supplement each other to provide a global understanding of the document. MATrIX is pre-trained in an unsupervised way with specifically designed tasks that require the use of multi-modal information (spatial, visual, or textual). We consider the spatial and text modalities all at once in a single token set. To make the attention more flexible, we use a learned modality-aware relative bias in the attention mechanism to modulate the attention between the tokens of different modalities. We evaluate MATrIX on 3 different datasets each with strong baselines.

Abstract

We present Contrastive Neighborhood Alignment (CNA), a manifold learning approach to maintain the topology of learned features whereby data points that are mapped to nearby representations by the source (teacher) model are also mapped to neighbors by the target (student) model. The target model aims to mimic the local structure of the source representation space using a contrastive loss. CNA is an unsupervised learning algorithm that does not require ground-truth labels for the individual samples. CNA is illustrated in three scenarios: manifold learning, where the model maintains the local topology of the original data in a dimension-reduced space; model distillation, where a small student model is trained to mimic a larger teacher; and legacy model update, where an older model is replaced by a more powerful one. Experiments show that CNA is able to capture the manifold in a high-dimensional space and improves performance compared to the competing methods in their domains., Comment: 10 pages, 7 tables, 3 figures

Abstract

We realize and model a Rydberg-state atom interferometer for measurement of phase and intensity of radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic waves. A phase reference is supplied to the atoms via a modulated laser beam, enabling atomic measurement of the RF wave's phase without an external RF reference wave. The RF and optical fields give rise to closed interferometric loops within the atoms' internal Hilbert space. In our experiment, we construct interferometric loops in the state space $\{ 6P_{3/2}, 90S_{1/2}, 91S_{1/2}, 90P_{3/2} \}$ of cesium and employ them to measure phase and intensity of a 5 GHz RF wave in a room-temperature vapor cell. Electromagnetically induced transparency on the $6S_{1/2}$ to $6P_{3/2}$ transition serves as an all-optical interferometer probe. The RF phase is measured over a range of $\pi$, and a sensitivity of 2 mrad is achieved. 25. Anisotropic Interactions in Electric Field Polarized Ultracold Rydberg Gases

Abstract

We calculate pair potential curves for interacting Rydberg atoms in a constant electric field and use them to determine the effective $C_3$ dipole-dipole and $C_6$ van der Waals coefficients. We compare the $C_3$ and $C_6$ with experiments where the angle of a polarizing electric field is varied with respect to the axis of a quasi-1-dimensional trap at ultracold temperatures. The dipoles produced via polarization of the atoms have an angular dependent dipole-dipole interaction. We focus on the interaction potential of two rubidium Rydberg atoms in $50S_{1/2}$ states in the blockade regime. For internuclear distances close to the blockade radius, $R_{bl} \approx 4 - 6\,\mu$m, molecular calculations are in much better agreement with experimental results than those based on the properties of single atoms and independent calculations of $C_3$ and $C_6$ which were used to analyze the original experiment. We find that the calculated $C_6$ coefficient is within $8\%$ of the experimental value while the $C_3$ coefficient is within $20\%$ of the experimental value., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Atoms excited into high-lying Rydberg states and under strong dipole-dipole interactions exhibit phenomena associated with highly correlated and complex systems. We perform first principles numerical simulations on the dynamics of such systems. The emergence of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum, as expected in strongly correlated gases and accurately described by Feynman's theory of liquid helium, is shown to significantly inhibit particle transport, with a strong suppression of the diffusion coefficient, due to the emerging spatial order. We also demonstrate how the ability to temporally tune the interaction strength among Rydberg atoms can be used in order to overcome the effects of disorder induced heating, allowing the study of unprecedented highly coupled regimes.

Abstract

We describe the emergence of strong spatial correlations, akin to liquid-like behavior and crystallization effects, in low (one and two) dimensional gases of cold Rydberg atoms. The presence of an external electric field permanently polarizes the atoms, which became highly correlated due to the long-range dipole-dipole interaction. We describe a theoretical approach particularly suited for strongly coupled systems and numerically obtain both the two-particle distribution function and the static structure factor. The experimental implementation of such highly interacting systems is discussed, including detailed calculations of the interaction strength for different Rydberg states. The results provide new insights into many-body effects associated with strongly interacting Rydberg atoms, including the possibility of observing novel highly ordered phases.

Abstract

Let E be the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra over a finite field F of characteristic not 2. In this paper we deal with the homogeneous Z_2-gradings of E. In particular, we compute an exact value for the Z_2-graded homogeneous codimensions of E, and a lower and an upper bound for the Z_2-graded (non-homogeneous) codimensions of E for each of its Z_2-homogeneous grading.
