The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of treatment with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) on the morphofunctional characteristics of the corpus luteum (CL) in crossbred cows with different circulating concentrations of progesterone (P4) during ovulation synchronization. We used 30 crossbred females submitted to a synchronization protocol for IATF and divided to receive or not PGF2α. In the D0 at the beginning of the protocol and at the time of withdrawal of the intravaginal device of P4 were randomly subdivided for four groups to receive the application or not of eCG (High P4 Group P4-S / eCG, n = 7; High P4 Group P4- S / eCG, n=8; Low P4 Group S/eCG, n = 7, and Low P4 Group C/eCG, n = 8). Thefour experimental groups were analyzed in a factorial arrangement (2x2) based on a completely randomized design, the first factor being the application of PGF2α on day zero (levels 0 and 12.5 mg), while the second factor was the application of eCG at day eight of the protocol (levels 0 and 300 IU). Statistical analysis was performed using the statistical package Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 19 (SPSS, 2012). A high P4 concentration at the time of ovulation synchronization negatively influenced (P=0.03) the diameter, volume, and vascularization of CL subsequent to protocol. Cows treated with eCG and with a high circulating concentration of P4 at the time of ovulation synchronization presented CL (P> 0.05) diameter, similar to cows with low P4 concentration. It is concluded that high circulating concentrations of P4 negatively impacted the morphofunctional characteristics of CL and the administration of eCG can be used as a strategy to favor a better luteal response in bovine crossbred females with high P4 concentration at the time of ovulation synchronization.
