16. Ternary NiFeCo-glycerolate catalysts: rational design for improved oxygen evolution reaction efficiency.

Abstract

Catalysts capable of overcoming the bottleneck of water splitting, known as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), are indispensable to the expansion of renewable energy systems. Thus, we report the synthesis of ternary glycerolate containing Ni, Fe, and Co metals by an easy one-pot solvothermal method. Interestingly, the iron precursor content plays a key role in the formation of microspheres, as confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) images. In fact, when Fe-acetate precursor content exceeds 33.3% in molar proportions, particles without a defined morphology are generated. By comparing three distinct compositions of Ni1−2xFexCox-Gly (x = 0.2; 0.3; 0.33, respectively), the best performance is achieved with Ni0.4Fe0.3Co0.3-Gly, showing an excellent overpotential of 277 mV and a Tafel slope of 36.24 mV dec−1. The presence of in situ formed metal oxyhydroxide species on the electrode surface is the key to the high-performance catalyst presented in this work. Where the interaction between Ni2+/3+, Fe2+/3+, and Co2+/3+ provides significant electroactivity under OER conditions over 16 h at 10 mA cm−2, with a positive potential shift of 19 mV in alkaline medium (1 M KOH). Abstract

This review provides a systematic analysis of advancements in biogas refining and biomethane purification, focusing on the application of biomass-derived activated carbon (AC) modified with metal oxides for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2). We explore technological innovations in biogas upgrading, including water scrubbing, pressure swing adsorption (PSA), membrane separation, and others, highlighting their operational efficiency, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. The removal of H2S and CO2is critical in converting raw biogas, primarily composed of methane (CH4) and CO2, into high-purity biomethane, making it suitable for integration into existing natural gas infrastructures. Our findings underscore the potential of these new composite materials to enhance biogas upgrading technologies, fostering the broader use of biomethane as a sustainable energy source. Furthermore, this review offers valuable insights for the future design and optimization of these refining processes, positioning biomass-derived AC modified with metal oxides as essential in advancing the field of biomethane purification.

26. From medium- to high-entropy hydroxides for hybrid supercapacitors: a review.

Abstract

The quest for devices with significantly higher power and energy density has made hybrid supercapacitors a promising alternative for energy storage. These devices have gained traction by combining the exceptional power density of supercapacitive materials with the high energy density of battery-type materials in a single system. Among promising battery-type materials, medium-entropy and high-entropy hydroxides (MEhydroxides/ HE-hydroxides) have attracted growing research interest due to their unique structural characteristics and their potential for tailoring functional properties. This new class of materials represents a significant departure from the traditional concept of low-entropy materials, paving the way for innovative advancements in energy storage technologies. Considering the significant advancements in the past five years, this review focuses on the recently developed ME- and HE-hydroxides for hybrid supercapacitors. It covers their synthesis methods, effective strategies, promising trends, and performance as positive electrode materials. Additionally, the review addresses the inappropriate use of the term "high-entropy". Finally, the challenges and prospects in designing ME- and HE-hydroxides for hybrid supercapacitors are discussed, offering guidance for the development of new materials to advance future energy storage technologies. 33. Ni-rich layered cathodes in sodium-ion batteries: perspectives or déjà vu?

Abstract

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as promising energy storage devices due to the widespread availability of low-cost sodium and their electrochemical mechanism, which bears similarities to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The promising potential of Ni-rich layered oxides, coupled with the sense of déjà vu from the advancements seen in LIBs, strongly suggests the practical application of these compounds in SIBs. For the first time, the recent advancements in cathode materials for SIBs are highlighted, focusing on Ni-rich layered transition metal oxides such as NaNixCoyMnzO2 (Na-NCM), NaNixCoyAlzO2 (Na-NCA), Na–NixFeyMnzO2 (Na-NFM) and NaNixCoyMnz[TM]1−x−y−zO2 (Na-NCM[TM], TM = other transition metal) with x ≥ 0.60 (x + y + z = 1). These materials offer practical synthesis methods, impressive specific capacity, and environmental friendliness. However, challenges remain, including energy density and cycle life. Strategies to engineer high-energy-density SIBs are being pursued, notably developing Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials. In conclusion, an outlook that assesses the strengths and limitations of this field is pointed out, providing valuable insights to steer future research efforts toward enhancing Ni-rich cathodes, thereby paving the way for further advancements.
