Abstract: Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detectorthat builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detectorwhich has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will belocated along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beamwith 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with thevery large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected toacquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse scienceprogram including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations,atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientificscope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors forexample in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes.Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment isexpected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration ispresently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the UnitedStates, whose community has a long history of making significant contributionsto the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leadingroles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

Abstract: The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using a beam of muon neutrinos produced by an accelerator. The neutrinos travel from J-PARC on the east coast of Japan and are detected 295 kilometers further away in the Super-Kamiokande detector. A complex of near detectors located 280 meters away from the neutrino production target is used to better characterize the neutrino beam and reduce systematic uncertainties. The experiment aims at measuring electronic neutrino appearance (νμ→νe oscillation) to measure the neutrino mixing angle θ13, and muon neutrino disappearance to measure the neutrino mixing angle θ23 and mass splitting |δm322|. We report here electron neutrino appearance results using three years of data, recorded until the 2012 summer, as well as muon neutrino disappearance results based on the data coming from the first two years of the experiment. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The T2K Collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to 3.01×10(20) protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, 205±17 (syst) events are expected to be detected while only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum, assuming three neutrino flavors and normal mass hierarchy yields a best-fit mixing angle sin2(θ23)=0.514±0.082 and mass splitting |Δm(32)(2)|=2.44(-0.15)(+0.17)×10(-3) eV2/c4. Our result corresponds to the maximal oscillation disappearance probability.

Abstract: The T2K Collaboration reports evidence for electron neutrino appearance at the atmospheric mass splitting, |Δm322|≈2.4×10-3 eV2. An excess of electron neutrino interactions over background is observed from a muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector 295 km from the beam's origin. Signal and background predictions are constrained by data from near detectors located 280 m from the neutrino production target. We observe 11 electron neutrino candidate events at the SK detector when a background of 3.3±0.4(syst) events is expected. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a p value of 0.0009 (3.1σ), and a fit assuming νμ→νe oscillations with sinâ¡22θ23=1, δCP=0 and |Δm322|=2.4×10-3 eV2 yields sinâ¡22θ13=0.088-0.039+0. 049(stat+syst). © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract: Using an impact-parameter tag to select an enriched sample of Z0bb» events, we have measured the difference between the average charged multiplicity of bb» and all hadronic Z0 decays to be 2.11.8(stat) 0.6(syst) tracks per event. The resulting total (nonleading) charged multiplicity for Z0 bb» events is 23.1(12.0)1.8 0.6 tracks. A comparison of this nonleading multiplicity to hadronic multiplicity data in the range of 10 to 60 GeV supports the hypothesis of flavor-independent hadronic fragmentation, and yields a measurement of the average energy fraction of bottom hadrons in Z0 decays of xEb=0.620.100.04. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We have measured the fraction of bb» events in hadronic Z0 decays, Rbb», using the vertex detector system of the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We tag bb» events by requiring the coincidence of three or more tracks with significant impact parameters. This tag is 50% efficient and results in a sample of 85% purity. We find Rbb»=0.251+0.049+0.030, in good agreement with other measurements and the standard model prediction. © 1991 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Using the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider, we search for decays of the Z boson to a pair of nonminimal Higgs bosons (ZHs0Hp0), where one of them is relatively light (10 GeV). We find no evidence for these decays and we obtain limits on the ZHs0Hp0 coupling as a function of the Higgs-boson masses. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Using the sample of neutral vector bosons (Z's) produced at the SLAC Linear Collider and detected with the Mark II detector, we search for the decay of the Z to a pair of particles, one of which decays to two charged particles. The observed number of Z decays with this signature excludes, at a confidence level greater than 95%, the decay of the Z to a pair of fourth-generation Dirac neutrinos with mass between 2.5 and 22 GeV, a decay length less than about 1 cm, and coupling to any of the first three generations of charged leptons. This is the first time the existence of such a lepton coupling to the ± has been excluded by a direct search. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We describe a search for the decay of the Z boson into pairs of doubly charged Higgs bosons with the Mark II detector operating at the SLAC Linear Collider. Each Higgs boson is assumed to decay into a same-sign leptonic pair. No event candidates are found in a sample of 528 Z decays. At the 95% confidence level, this result excludes the region of leptonic coupling gll3×10-7 and Higgs-boson mass 6.5MH 36.5 GeV/c2 for isotriplet (left-handed) Higgs bosons. Isosinglet (right-handed) Higgs bosons are excluded in the same gll interval and in the mass interval 7.3 MH 34.3 GeV/c2. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: A search for pair production of stable charged particles from Z decay has been performed with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. Particle masses are determined from momentum, ionization energy loss, and time-of-flight measurements. A limit excluding pair production of stable fourth-generation charged leptons and stable mirror fermions with masses between the muon mass and 36.3 GeV/c2 is set at the 95% confidence level. Pair production of stable supersymmetric scalar leptons with masses between the muon mass and 32.6 GeV/c2 is also excluded. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We search for events in the Mark II detector at SLAC Linear Collider with the topology of a Z boson decaying into a pair of long-lived massive particles. No events that are consistent with the search hypothesis are found. Interpreting the long-lived particle as a sequential Dirac neutrino 4 of the fourth generation, we exclude at the 95% confidence level a significant range of mixing-matrix elements of 4 to other-generation neutrinos for a 4 mass from 10 to 43 GeV/c2. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We have measured inclusive distributions for charged particles in hadronic decays of the Z boson. The variables chosen for study were charged-particle multiplicity, scaled momentum, and momenta transverse to the sphericity axes. The distributions have been corrected for detector effects and are compared with data from ee- annihilation at lower energies and with the predictions of several QCD-based models. The data are in reasonable agreement with expectations. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We measured the differential jet-multiplicity distribution in e+e- annihilation with the Mark II detector. This distribution is compared with the second-order QCD prediction and s is determined to be 0.1230.0090.005 at ssSMZ (at the SLAC Linear Collider) and 0.1490.0020.007 at ss=29 GeV (at the SLAC storage ring PEP). Abstract: We have measured the mass of the Z boson to be 91.14±0.12 GeV/c2, and its width to be 2.42-0.35+0.45 GeV. If we constrain the visible width to its standard-model value, we find the partial width to invisible decay modes to be 0.46±0.10 GeV, corresponding to 2.8±0.6 neutrino species, with a 95%-confidence-level upper limit of 3.9. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

In order to study the parton structure of these events, we compare the distributions in sphericity, thurst, aplanarity, and number of jets to the predictions of several QCD-based models and to data from lower energies. Abstract: We present measurements by the Mark II experiment of the ratios of the leptonic partial widths of the Z boson to the hadronic partial width. The results are ee/had=0.037-0.012+0.016, &=0.053-0.0150.020, and /had=0.066-0.017+0.021, in good agreement with the standard-model prediction of 0.048. From the average leptonic width result, ll/had=0.053-0.009+0.010, we derive had=1.56-0.24+0.28 GeV. We find for the vector coupling constants of the tau and muon v2=0.310.31-0.30+0.43 and v2=0.050.30-0.23+0.34. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The Mark II detector has been upgraded in preparation for its role as the first detector to take data at the Stanford Linear Collider. The new detector components include the central drift chamber, the time-of-flight system, the coil, the endcap electromagnetic calorimeters and the beam energy and luminosity measuring devices. There have also been improvements in detector hermeticity. All of the major components were installed for a test run at the PEP storage ring (√s = 29 GeV) in 1985. This paper describes the upgraded detector, including its trigger and data acquisition systems, and gives performance figures for its components. Future improvements are also discussed. © 1989.

Abstract: The International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) was established by the community at the ninth International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, super-beams, and beta- beams which was held in Okayama in August 2007. The IDS-NF mandate is to deliver the Reference Design Report (RDR) for the facility on the timescale of 2012/13. In addition, the mandate for the study [3] requires an Interim Design Report to be delivered midway through the project as a step on the way to the RDR. This document, the IDR, has two functions: it marks the point in the IDS-NF at which the emphasis turns to the engineering studies required to deliver the RDR and it documents baseline concepts for the accelerator complex, the neutrino detectors, and the instrumentation systems. The IDS-NF is, in essence, a site-independent study. Example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL, have been identified to allow site-specific issues to be addressed in the cost analysis that will be presented in the RDR. The choice of example sites should not be interpreted as implying a preferred choice of site for the facility.

Abstract: The method developed for the calculation of the flux and composition of the West Area Neutrino Beam used by NOMAD in its search for neutrino oscillations is described. The calculation is based on particle production rates computed using a recent version of FLUKA and modified to take into account the cross-sections measured by the SPY and NA20 experiments. These particles are propagated through the beam line taking into account the material and magnetic fields they traverse. The neutrinos produced through their decays are tracked to the NOMAD detector. The fluxes of the four neutrino flavours at NOMAD,are predicted with an uncertainty of about 8% for v(mu) and v(e), 10% for (v) over bar (mu), and 12% for (v) over bar (e). The energy-dependent uncertainty achieved on the v(e)/v(mu) prediction needed for a v(mu) --> v(e) oscillation search ranges from 4% to 7%, whereas the overall normalization uncertainty on this ratio is 4.2%. Abstract: We report on a direct search in NOMAD for a new 33.9 MeV/c(2) neutral particle (X) produced in pion decay in flight, pi --> muX followed by the decay X --> nue(+)e(-). Both decays are postulated to occur to explain the time anomaly observed by the KARMEN experiment. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with 4.1 x 10(19) protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. The search is sensitive to a pion branching ratio BR(pi --> muX) > 3.7 x 10(-15), significantly smaller than previous experimental limits. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A study of strange particle production in nu(mu) charged cur-rent interactions has been performed using the data from the NOMAD experiment. Yields of neutral strange particles (K-S(0), Lambda, (&ULambda;) over bar) have been measured. Mean multiplicities are reported as a function of the event kinematic variables E-nu W-2 and Q(2) as well as of the variables describing particle behaviour within a hadronic jet: x(F), z and p(T)(2). Decays of resonances and heavy hyperons with identified K, and A in the final state have been analyzed. Clear signals corresponding to K*+/-, Sigma(*+/-), Xi(-) and Sigma(0) have been observed. Abstract: A search was made among numu charged current events collected in the NOMAD experiment for the reaction: nu(mu) + N --> mu(-) + D*+ + hadrons hooked right arrowD(0) + pi(+) hooked right arrowK(-) + pi(+) A high purity D*+ sample composed of 35 events was extracted. The D*+ yield in nu(mu) charged current interactions was measured to be T = (0.79 +/- 0.17(stat.) +/- 0.10(syst.))%. The mean fraction of the hadronic jet energy taken by the D*+ is 0.67 +/- 0.02(stat.) +/- 0.02(syst.). The distributions of the fragmentation variables z, P-T(2) and x(F) for D*+ are also presented. Abstract: We present a measurement of the polarization of )over bar> hyperons produced in nu (mu) charged current interactions. The full data sample from the NOMAD experiment has been analyzed using the same V-0 identification procedure and analysis method reported in a previous paper [NOMAD Collaboration. Nucl. Phys. B 588 (2000) 3] for the case of Lambda hyperons. The )over bar> polarization has been measured for the first time in a neutrino experiment. Abstract: Results from the v, appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% CL allowed region in the sin(2)2 theta (mu tau)-Deltam(2) plane which includes sin(2)2 theta (mu tau) < 3.3 x 10(-4) at large Deltam(2) and Deltam(2) < 0.7 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2) 2 theta (mu tau) = 1. The corresponding contour in the nu (e) --> nu (tau) oscillation hypothesis results in sin(2) 2 theta (l tau) < 1.5 x 10(-2) at large Deltam(2) and Deltam(2) < 5.9 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2) 2 theta (l tau) = 1. Abstract: The inclusive production of the meson resonances p(0)(770), f(0)(980) and f(2)(1270) in neutrino- nucleus charged current interactions has been studied with the NOMAD detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam generated by 450 GeV protons at the CERN SPS. For the first time the f0(980) meson is observed in neutrino interactions. The statistical significance of its observation is 6 standard deviations. The presence of f(2)(1270) in neutrino interactions is reliably established, The average multiplicity of these three resonances is measured as a function of several kinematic variables, The experimental results are compared to the multiplicities obtained from a simulation based on the Lund model, In addition, the average multiplicity of rho (0)(770) in antineutrino-nucleus interactions is measured. Abstract: Backward proton and pi (-) production has been studied in nu (mu) CC interactions with carbon nuclei. Detailed analyses of the momentum distributions, of the production rates, and of the general features of events with a backward going particle, have been carried out in order to understand the mechanism producing these particles. Abstract: Updated results from the appearance searches for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) and nu(e) --> nu(tau) oscillations in the full NOMAD data sample are reported. The increased data and the use of more refined kinematic schemes for the nu(tau) CC selection allow a significant improvement of the overall sensitivity. The "blind analysis" of both the deep-inelastic and the low multiplicity samples yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% C.L. region in the sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) - Delta m(2) plane which includes sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 4.4 X 10(-4) at large Delta m(2) and Delta m(2) < 0.8 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) = 1. The corresponding contour in the nu(e) --> nu(tau) oscillation hypothesis results in sin(2)2 theta(e tau) < 2.2 X 10(-2) at large Delta m(2) and Delta m(2) < 6.5 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2)2 theta(e tau) = 1. Abstract: In the context of a two-flavour approximation we reinterpret the published NOMAD limit on nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillations in terms of nu(e) --> nu(tau) oscillations. At 90% C.L. we obtain sin2(2)theta(e tau) < 5.2 X 10(-2) for large Delta m(2), while for sin2(2)theta(e tau) = 1 the confidence region includes Delta m(2) < 11 eV(2)/c(4). Abstract: The Lambda polarization in upsilon (mu) charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Lambda 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W-boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: P-x(x(F) < 0) = -0.21 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.02(sys). In the current fragmentation region we find P-x(x(F) > 0) = -0.09 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.03(sys). These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. A significant transverse polarization tin the direction orthogonal to the Lambda production plane! has been observed for the first time in a neutrino experiment: P-y = -0.22 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.01(sys). The dependence of the absolute value of P-y on the Lambda transverse momentum with respect to the hadronic jet direction is in qualitative agreement with the resuits from unpolarized hadron-hadron experiments. Abstract: We carried out a model-independent search for light scalar or pseudoscalar particles a's (an example of which is the axion) that couple to two photons by using a photon-regeneration method at high energies allowing a substantial increase in the sensitivity to eV masses. The experimental set-up is based on elements of the CERN West Area Neutrino Facility (WANF) beam Line and the NOMAD neutrino detector. The new particles, if they exist, could be produced through the Primakoff effect in interactions of high energy photons, generated by the 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target, with virtual photons from the WANF horn magnetic field. The particles would penetrate the downstream shielding and would be observed in the NOMAD neutrino detector through their re-conversion into real high energy photons by interacting with the virtual photons from the magnetic field of the NOMAD dipole magnet. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996 run with 1.08 x 10(19) protons on target, 312 candidate events with energy between 5 and 140 GeV were found. This number is in general agreement with the expectation of 272 +/- 18 background events from standard neutrino processes. A 90 % CL upper limit on the a gamma gamma-coupling g(a gamma gamma) < 1.5 x 10(-4) GeV-1 for a masses up to 40 eV is obtained. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report the first precision measurements of the scaled momentum, the charge multiplicity, and the thrust of hadronic jets in the Breit frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering nu(mu)N and charged cur rent events over the Q(2) range from 1 to 100 GeV2. The neutrino data, obtained in the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS, extend the Q(2)-evolution of these parameters by two orders of magnitude, and with commensurate precision, when compared to those reported by the ep and e(+)e(-) experiments. Abstract: With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify nu(tau) charged current interactions followed by decay of the tau(-) to one of several decay modes. Our "blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90% C.L. confidence region in the sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) - Delta m(2) plane. At large Delta m(2) the confidence region includes sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 1.2 X 10(-3) (a limit 3.5 times more stringent than in our previous publication), while at sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) = 1 the confidence region includes Delta m(2) < 1.2 eV(2)/c(4). Abstract: A search was made for a new light gauge boson X which might be produced in pi(0) -->, gamma + X decay from neutral pions generated by 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of X --> pi(0) conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With 1.45 x 10(18) protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1 +/- 2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio Br(pi(0) --> Y + X)< (3.3 to 1.9)X 10(-5) for X masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c(2) is obtained. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for v(tau) appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band v(mu) beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of I: charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied tau decay modes, a limit of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 4.2 x 10(-3) is obtained for large Delta m(2) at the 90% confidence level. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for v(mu) - v(tau) oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The v(tau)'s are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting tau(-) through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction and individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe K-s(o)'s, Lambda(o)'s and pi(0)s. Finally, the observation of tau(-) through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed. Abstract: Measurements of double-differential charged pion production cross-sections in interactions of 12 GeV/c protons on O2 and N2 thin targets are presented in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV/c ≤ pπ < 8 GeV/c and 50 mrad ≤ θπ < 250 mrad (in the laboratory frame) and are compared with p-C results. For p-N2 (p-O2) interactions the analysis is performed using 38576 (7522) reconstructed secondary pions. The analysis uses the beam instrumentation and the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment at CERN PS. The measured cross-sections have a direct impact on the precise calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes and on the improved reliability of extensive air shower simulations by reducing the uncertainties of hadronic interaction models in the low energy range. In particular, the present results allow the common hypothesis that p-C data can be used to predict the p-N2 and p-O2 pion production cross-sections to be tested. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, d2σπ+/d p dΩ, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210 000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. The overall scale of the cross-section is known to better than 6%, while the average point-to-point error is 8.2%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
