We extend the classical two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) formalism to include quantum effects such as electron Fermi pressure, Bohm pressure and spin couplings. At scales smaller than the electron skin-depth, the Hall effect and electron inertia must be taken into account, and can overlap with the quantum effects. We write down the full set of two-fluid quantum MHD (QMHD) and analyze the relative importance ofthese effects in the high density environments of neutron star atmospheres and white dwarf interiors, finding that for a broad range of parameters all these effects are operative. Of all spin interactions we analyze only the spin-magnetic coupling, as it is linear in $\hbar$ and consequently it is the strongest spin effect. We re-obtain the classical two-fluid MHD dispersion relations corresponding to the magnetosonic and Alfv\'en modes, modified by quantum effects. In the zero-spin case, for propagation parallel to the magnetic field, we find that the frequency of the fast mode is due to quantum effects modified by electron inertia, while the frequency of the Alfv\'en-slow sector has no quantum corrections. For perpendicular propagation, the fast-mode frequency is the same as for the parallel propagation plus a correction due only to classical two-fluid effects. When spin is considered, a whistler mode appears, which is due to two-fluid spin-magnetic interaction. There are no modifications due to spin for parallel propagation of magnetosonic and Alfv\'en waves, while for perpendicular prop agation a dispersive term due to spin arises in the two-fluid expression for the fast magnetosonic mode., Comment: Twelve pages, four figures. Recent high resolution AIA/SDO images show evidence of the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) expand in the ambient corona. A large-scale magnetic field mostly tangential to the interface is inferred, both on the CME and on the background sides. However, the magnetic field component along the shear flow is not strong enough to quench the instability. There is also observational evidence that the ambient corona is in a turbulent regime, and therefore the criteria for the development of the instability are a-priori expected to differ from the laminar case. To study the evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability with a turbulent background, we perform three-dimensional simulations of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations. The instability is driven by a velocity profile tangential to the CME-corona interface, which we simulate through a hyperbolic tangent profile. The turbulent background is generated by the application of a stationary stirring force. We compute the instability growth-rate for different values of the turbulence intensity, and find that the role of turbulence is to attenuate the growth. The fact that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is observed, sets an upper limit to the correlation length of the coronal background turbulence.

We study the stability of shear flows in a fully ionized plasma. Kelvin-Helmholtz is a well known, macroscopic and ideal shear-driven instability. In sufficiently low density plasmas, also the microscopic Hall magneto-shear instability can take place. We performed three-dimensional simulations of the Hall-MHD equations where these two instabilities are present, and carried out a comparative study. We find that when the shear flow is so intense that its vorticity surpasses the ion-cyclotron frequency of the plasma, the Hall magneto-shear instability is not only non-negligible, but it actually displays growth rates larger than those of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.

Even though the solar wind is highly supersonic, intense ultra-low frequency (ULF) wave activity has been detected in regions just upstream of the bow shocks of magnetized planets. This feature was first observed ahead of the Earth's bow shock, and the corresponding region was called the ULF wave foreshock, which is embedded within the planet's foreshock. The properties as well as the spatial distribution of ULF waves within the Earth's foreshock have been extensively studied over the last three decades and have been explained as a result of plasma instabilities triggered by solar wind ions backstreaming from the bow shock. Since July 2004, the Cassini spacecraft has characterized the Saturnian plasma environment including its upstream region. Since Cassini's Saturn orbit insertion (SOI) in June 2004 through August 2005, we conducted a detailed survey and analysis of observations made by the Vector Helium Magnetometer (VHM). The purpose of the present study is to characterize the properties of waves observed in Saturn's ULF wave foreshock and identify its boundary using single spacecraft techniques. The amplitude of these waves is usually comparable to the mean magnetic field intensity, while their frequencies in the spacecraft frame yields two clearly differentiated types of waves: one with frequencies below the local proton cyclotron frequency (\Omega H+) and another with frequencies above \Omega H+. All the wave crossings described here, clearly show that these waves are associated to Saturn's foreshock. In particular, the presence of waves is associated with the change in \theta Bn to quasi-parallel geometries. Our results show the existence of a clear boundary for Saturn's ULF wave foreshock, compatible with \theta Bn = 45{\deg} surfaces.

Much of the progress in our understanding of dynamo mechanisms has been made within the theoretical framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). However, for sufficiently diffuse media, the Hall effect eventually becomes non-negligible. We present results from three dimensional simulations of the Hall-MHD equations subjected to random non-helical forcing. We study the role of the Hall effect in the dynamo efficiency for different values of the Hall parameter, using a pseudospectral code to achieve exponentially fast convergence. We also study energy transfer rates among spatial scales to determine the relative importance of the various nonlinear effects in the dynamo process and in the energy cascade. The Hall effect produces a reduction of the direct energy cascade at scales larger than the Hall scale, and therefore leads to smaller energy dissipation rates. Finally, we present results stemming from simulations at large magnetic Prandtl numbers, which is the relevant regime in hot and diffuse media such a the interstellar medium., Comment: 11 pages and 11 figures

The study of the evolution of a suprathermal electron beam traveling through a background plasma is relevant for the physics of solar flares and their associated type III solar radio bursts. As they evolve guided by the coronal magnetic field-lines, these beams generate Langmuir turbulence. The beam-generated turbulence is in turn responsible for the emission of radio photons at the second harmonic of the local plasma frequency, which are observed during type III solar radio bursts. To generate the radio emission, the beam-aligned Langmuir waves must coalesce, and therefore a process capable of re-directioning the turbulence in an effective fashion is required. Different theoretical models identify the electrostatic (ES) decay process L1 -> L2 + S (L: Langmuir wave; S: Ion-acoustic wave) as the re-directioning mechanism for the L waves. Two different regimes have been proposed to play a key role: the back-scattering and the diffusive (small angle) scattering. This paper is a comparative analysis of the decay rate of the ES decay for each regime, and of the different observable characteristics that are expected for the resulting ion-acoustic waves., Comment: 14 pages, 8 Figures. The nonlinear dynamics of a bundle of magnetic flux ropes driven by stationary fluid motions at their endpoints is studied, by performing numerical simulations of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. The development of MHD turbulence is shown, where the system reaches a state that is characterized by the ratio between the Alfven time (the time for incompressible MHD waves to travel along the field lines) and the convective time scale of the driving motions. This ratio of time scales determines the energy spectra and the relaxation toward different regimes ranging from weak to strong turbulence. We perform direct numerical simulations of an externally driven two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic system over extended periods of time to simulate the dynamics of a transverse section of a solar coronal loop. A stationary and large-scale magnetic forcing was imposed, to model the photospheric motions at the magnetic loop footpoints. A turbulent stationary regime is reached, which corresponds to energy dissipation rates consistent with the heating requirements of coronal loops. The temporal behavior of quantities such as the energy dissipation rate show clear indications of intermittency, which are exclusively due to the strong nonlinearity of the system. We tentatively associate these impulsive events of magnetic energy dissipation to the so-called nanoflares. A statistical analysis of these events yields a power law distribution as a function of their energies with a negative slope of 1.5, which is consistent with those obtained for flare energy distributions reported from X-ray observations., Comment: 12 pages, Latex (AASTeX), 3 figures, ApJ Lett (in press)

Fourier analysis is applied to very high resolution image of coronal active regions obtained by the Normal Incidence X-Ray Telescope is used to find a broad isotropic power-law spectrum of the spatial distribution of soft X-ray intensities. Magnetic structures of all sizes are present down to the resolution limit of the instrument. Power spectra for the X-ray intensities of a sample of topologically different active regions are found which fall off with increasing wavenumber as 1/k-cubed. A model is presented that relates the basic features of coronal magnetic fluctuations to the subphotospheric hydrodynamic turbulence that generates them. The model is used to find a theoretical power spectrum for the X-ray intensity which falls off with increasing wavenumber as 1/k-cubed. The implications of a turbulent regime in active regions are discussed.

We formulate the relativistic Fokker-Plank equation for a beam of accelerated electrons interacting with a partially ionized plasma. In our derivation we conserved those terms contributing to velocity diffusion and found that this effect cannot be neglected a priori. We compute the terms accounting for elastic and inelastic collisions with neutral hydrogen and helium. Collisions with neutral hydrogen are found to be dominant throughout the chromosphere, except at the uppermost layers close to the transition region. As an application, we compute the loss of energy and momentum for a power-law beam impinging on the solar chromosphere, for a particular case in which the Fokker-Planck equation can be integrated analytically. We find that most of the beam energy is deposited in a relatively thin region of the chromosphere, a result which is largely insensitive to the theoretical method employed to compute the energy deposition rate.

It is proposed that a stationary spectrum of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is generated in solar coronal loops by the interweaving of magnetic field lines driven by the turbulent velocity field in the convective region. Starting from the set of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations, two ordinary differential equations describing the stationary turbulent energy spectrum and the frequency of direct energy cascade for a given kinetic energy spectrum of the subphotospheric convective motions are derived. An estimate of the typical dissipation length scale, at which magnetic energy efficiently heats the plasma by Joule dissipation is obtained. The impact of recent results of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations on the coronal heating problem is also discussed.

We analyze three sequences of images from active regions, and a full disk image obtained by Yohkoh's Soft X-ray Telescope. Two sequences are from a region at center disk observed through different filters, and one sequence is from the limb. After Fourier-transforming the X-ray intensity of the images we find nearly isotropic power-spectra with an azimuthally integrated slope of -2.1 for the center disk, and -2.8 for the limb images. The full-disk picture yields a spectrum of -2.4. These results are different from the active region spectra obtained with the Normal Incidence X-ray Telescope which have a slope of the order of -3.0, and we ascribe this to the difference in temperature response between the instruments. However, both the SXT and NIXT results are consistent with coronal heating as the end result of a downward quasistatic cascade (in lengthscales) of free magnetic energy in the corona, driven by footpoint motions in the photosphere.
