Abstract

Social network data offer interesting opportunities in urban studies. In this study, we used Twitter data to analyse city dynamics over the course of the day. Users of this social network were grouped according to city zone and time slot in order to analyse the daily dynamics of the city and the relationship between this and land use. First, daytime activity in each zone was compared with activity at night in order to determine which zones showed increased activity in each of the time slots. Then, typical Twitter activity profiles were obtained based on the predominant land use in each zone, indicating how land uses linked to activities were activated during the day, but at different rates depending on the type of land use. Lastly, a multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the influence of the different land uses on each of the major time slots (morning, afternoon, evening and night) through their changing coefficients. Activity tended to decrease throughout the day for most land uses (e.g. offices, education, health and transport), but remained constant in parks and increased in retail and residential zones. Abstract

Aim Methods Results Conclusion To describe the characteristics of febrile oncology patients seen in the Paediatric Emergency Department and microbiological characteristics of the invasive bacterial infections (IBIs) diagnosed.We conducted a prospective observational study of febrile oncology patients seen between 2016 and 2022. We divided haematologic cancers by the aggressiveness of the chemotherapy received at the time.We included 418 episodes (272 haematologic cancers, 146 solid tumours). The median duration of fever was 2 h (interquartile range: 1–3) and 97.6% of patients were well‐appearing on arrival. We diagnosed 61 IBIs (14.6%), including six episodes of bacterial sepsis. One other episode was coded as sepsis without microbiological confirmation, yielding seven episodes overall (1.7%). Rates of IBI and sepsis were higher among patients with high‐risk haematologic cancers than those with low‐risk haematologic cancers or solid tumours (22.9%, 5.4% and 10.3%, p < 0.01; 3.4%, 0% and 0.7%, p = 0.06, respectively). Leading causes were S. epidermidis (42.6%) and E. coli (14.7%). Gram‐positive bacteria caused 67.2% of non‐septic IBIs and 50% of septic episodes.Most febrile oncology patients are well‐appearing and present with a very short history of fever. Abstract

Background During the initial phase of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, reduced numbers of acutely ill or injured children presented to emergency departments (EDs). Concerns were raised about the potential for delayed and more severe presentations and an increase in diagnoses such as diabetic ketoacidosis and mental health issues. This multinational observational study aimed to study the number of children presenting to EDs across Europe during the early COVID-19 pandemic and factors influencing this and to investigate changes in severity of illness and diagnoses. Methods and findings Routine health data were extracted retrospectively from electronic patient records of children aged 18 years and under, presenting to 38 EDs in 16 European countries for the period January 2018 to May 2020, using predefined and standardized data domains. Observed and predicted numbers of ED attendances were calculated for the period February 2020 to May 2020. Poisson models and incidence rate ratios (IRRs), using predicted counts for each site as offset to adjust for case-mix differences, were used to compare age groups, diagnoses, and outcomes. Reductions in pediatric ED attendances, hospital admissions, and high triage urgencies were seen in all participating sites. ED attendances were relatively higher in countries with lower SARS-CoV-2 prevalence (IRR 2·26, 95% CI 1·90 to 2·70, p < 0.001) and in children aged Conclusions Reductions in ED attendances were seen across Europe during the first COVID-19 lockdown period. Abstract

Aim: Managing febrile infants has evolved without a generally accepted standard of care. We aimed to design quality indicators for managing infants ≤90 days old presenting to emergency departments (EDs) with fever without source. Methods: This multicentre Delphi study was carried out by the Febrile Infant Study Group of the Spanish Paediatric Emergency Research Network, from March 2021 to November 2021, and included paediatric emergency physicians from 24 Spanish EDs. A list of care standards was produced, following an extensive literature review and the involvement of all parties. Indicators were essential if they were voted by four panelists and also received a score of ≥4 from at least 95% of the 24 investigators. Results: We established 20 indicators, including one related to having a protocol, two to triage, nine to diagnostic processes, six to treatment and two to disposition. The following indicators were considered essential: having an ED management protocol, performing urinalysis on every infant, obtaining a blood culture from every infant and administering antibiotics in the ED to any febrile infant who did not appear well. Conclusion: The Delphi method resulted in a comprehensive list of quality indicators for managing febrile young infants in Spanish EDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SUMMARYViruses are obligate intracellular parasites with limited proteomes that heavily rely on the cell molecular machinery for their multiplication and spread. Plant viruses frequently cause symptoms through interference with host developmental programs. Despite the agricultural relevance of symptom development in virus-infected crops, the molecular mechanisms underlying these viral effects remain elusive. Here, we show that the symptoms triggered by tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) depend on the physical interaction between the host-mimicking domain of a virus-encoded protein, C4, and a plant-specific family of RCC1-like domain-containing (RLD) proteins. C4 outcompetes endogenous interactors of RLDs, disrupting RLD function in the regulation of endomembrane trafficking and polar auxin transport, ultimately leading to the developmental alterations recognized as symptoms of the viral infection. Importantly, symptoms do not have a detectable effect on the performance of the virus in the plant host, but they serve as attractants for the viral insect vector, the whiteflyBemisia tabaci, hence promoting pathogen spread. Our work uncovers the molecular underpinnings of the viral manipulation that leads to symptom development in the TYLCV-tomato pathosystem, and suggests that symptoms have evolved as a strategy to promote viral transmission by the insect vector. Given that most plant viruses are insect-transmitted, the principles described here might have broad applicability to crop-virus interactions.

50. Does the intensity of use of social media influence the economic sustainability of the university?

Abstract

In the last decades the term sustainability has become indispensable for society, governments and companies. Its correct implementation is of utmost importance, and therefore public institutions continuously promote the actions of sustainable development. During the pandemic, universities adapted to online teaching, using different platforms or even social media. The intensity of social media use has had positive and negative impacts. Several studies have linked the use of social media to sustainable development. Therefore, this study analyses the intensity of social media use in public universities and the relationship between the three dimensions of sustainability. To achieve the objectives set out, a sample of 447 users was used, and the data was analysed based on PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling). Variance-based SEM is a methodological option to carry out analyses that measure the simultaneous behaviour of dependence relationships. The results have shown that the intensity of the use of social media and the economic sustainability of universities is weak, even if it is positive. Furthermore, there is a strong and positive relationship between the three dimensions of sustainability at the university level. This study contributes to the academic literature on the subject and highlights the critical role of higher education institutions in promoting sustainability.
