1. Double extension of flat pseudo-Riemannian $F$-Lie algebras

Abstract

We define the concept of a flat pseudo-Riemannian $F$-Lie algebra and construct its corresponding double extension. This algebraic structure can be interpreted as the infinitesimal analogue of a Frobenius Lie group devoid of Euler vector fields. We show that the double extension provides a framework for generating all weakly flat Lorentzian non-abelian bi-nilpotent $F$-Lie algebras possessing one dimensional light-cone subspaces. A similar result can be established for nilpotent Lie algebras equipped with flat scalar products of signature $(2,n-2)$ where $n\geq 4$. Abstract

In the realm of supercommutative superrings, this article investigates the unique factorization of elements. We build upon recent findings by Naser et. al. concerning similar results in noncommutative symmetric rings with zerodivisors, delving deeper into the ramifications. Strikingly, we demonstrate that any unique factorization superdomain necessarily takes the form of a superfield, further characterizing them as Artinian superrings with Krull superdimension 0 | d. 5. Topological Effects on Attacks Against Vertex Classification

Abstract

Vertex classification is vulnerable to perturbations of both graph topology and vertex attributes, as shown in recent research. As in other machine learning domains, concerns about robustness to adversarial manipulation can prevent potential users from adopting proposed methods when the consequence of action is very high. This paper considers two topological characteristics of graphs and explores the way these features affect the amount the adversary must perturb the graph in order to be successful. We show that, if certain vertices are included in the training set, it is possible to substantially an adversary's required perturbation budget. On four citation datasets, we demonstrate that if the training set includes high degree vertices or vertices that ensure all unlabeled nodes have neighbors in the training set, we show that the adversary's budget often increases by a substantial factor---often a factor of 2 or more---over random training for the Nettack poisoning attack. Even for especially easy targets (those that are misclassified after just one or two perturbations), the degradation of performance is much slower, assigning much lower probabilities to the incorrect classes. Abstract

The segmentation and classification of animals from camera-trap images is due to the conditions under which the images are taken, a difficult task. This work presents a method for classifying and segmenting mammal genera from camera-trap images. Our method uses Multi-Layer Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) for segmenting, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for extracting features, Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) for selecting features, and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) or Support Vector Machines (SVM) for classifying mammal genera present in the Colombian forest. We evaluated our method with the camera-trap images from the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute. We obtained an accuracy of 92.65% classifying 8 mammal genera and a False Positive (FP) class, using automatic-segmented images. On the other hand, we reached 90.32% of accuracy classifying 10 mammal genera, using ground-truth images only. Unlike almost all previous works, we confront the animal segmentation and genera classification in the camera-trap recognition. This method shows a new approach toward a fully-automatic detection of animals from camera-trap images.

Abstract

The segmentation of animals from camera-trap images is a difficult task. To illustrate, there are various challenges due to environmental conditions and hardware limitation in these images. We proposed a multi-layer robust principal component analysis (multi-layer RPCA) approach for background subtraction. Our method computes sparse and low-rank images from a weighted sum of descriptors, using color and texture features as case of study for camera-trap images segmentation. The segmentation algorithm is composed of histogram equalization or Gaussian filtering as pre-processing, and morphological filters with active contour as post-processing. The parameters of our multi-layer RPCA were optimized with an exhaustive search. The database consists of camera-trap images from the Colombian forest taken by the Instituto de Investigaci\'on de Recursos Biol\'ogicos Alexander von Humboldt. We analyzed the performance of our method in inherent and therefore challenging situations of camera-trap images. Furthermore, we compared our method with some state-of-the-art algorithms of background subtraction, where our multi-layer RPCA outperformed these other methods. Our multi-layer RPCA reached 76.17 and 69.97% of average fine-grained F-measure for color and infrared sequences, respectively. 12. Implementing TeleSleep at Veterans Healthcare Administration: an organizational case study of adaptation and sustainment.

Abstract

Veteran access to sleep medicine is of paramount importance to the Veterans Health Administration (VA). To increase access, VA has created community referral policies and programs, as well as telehealth programs. In 2017, the Office of Rural Health (ORH) funded a TeleSleep initiative focused on reaching rural Veterans with unmet sleep needs. ORH provided 3-6 years of funding to help 19 hubs support 98 spoke sites serving rural Veterans. As ORH funding concluded, each hub identified its path to sustainment. This case study follows one TeleSleep hub in VA's western geographic region as it transitioned from ORH funding sustainment as a regional Sleep Clinical Resource Hub. This case study describes the real-world process of adaptation in care delivery strategies. One key area of adaptation revolved around whether to deliver care via the patient's home facility or the provider's home facility. In early 2021, the TeleSleep team implemented an innovative provider transfer model, where temporary reinforcements from the TeleSleep hub increased the workforce capacity of spoke sites, similar to the concept of locum tenens. In this provider transfer model, TeleSleep clinicians scheduled, documented, and billed for each encounter at the Veteran's home facility. Positioning TeleSleep clinicians as local providers facilitated communication and referrals and promoted continuity and quality of care for Veterans in their home facility. This provider transfer model reduced the administrative burden of providers and schedulers and supported patient-side-only documentation of care. While this mirrors current locum tenens practice, transferring providers did not fit VA's financial model as implemented by the western region's Sleep Clinical Resource Hub. Therefore, in December 2021, VA aligned TeleSleep with VA's preferred practice of patient rather than provider transfers. In the patient transfer model, providers schedule and document in both the provider and patient electronic health records, and bill in the provider's facility. However, reflecting on this period of innovation, TeleSleep team members concluded that the provider transfer model could improve patient safety and care coordination while reducing the administrative burden of frontline clinicians. Abstract

Microalgae counting is used to measure biomass quantity. Usually, it is performed in a manual way using a Neubauer chamber and expert criterion, with the risk of a high error rate. This paper addresses the methodology for automatic identification of Scenedesmus microalgae (used in the methane production and food industry) and applies it to images captured by a digital microscope. The use of contrast adaptive histogram equalization for pre-processing, and active contours for segmentation are presented. The calculation of statistical features (Histogram of Oriented Gradients, Hu and Zernike moments) with texture features (Haralick and Local Binary Patterns descriptors) are proposed for algae characterization. Scenedesmus algae can build coenobia consisting of 1, 2, 4 and 8 cells. The amount of algae of each coenobium helps to determine the amount of lipids, proteins, and other substances in a given sample of a algae crop. The knowledge of the quantity of those elements improves the quality of bioprocess applications. Classification of coenobia achieves accuracies of 98.63% and 97.32% with Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), respectively. According to the results it is possible to consider the proposed methodology as an alternative to the traditional technique for algae counting. The induced two-dimensional topological N=1 supersymmetric sigma model on a differential Poisson manifold M presented in arXiv:1503.05625 is shown to be a special case of the induced Poisson sigma model on the bi-graded supermanifold T[0,1]M. The bi-degree comprises the standard N-valued target space degree, corresponding to the form degree on the worldsheet, and an additional Z-valued fermion number, corresponding to the degree in the differential graded algebra of forms on M. The N=1 supersymmetry stems from the compatibility between the (extended) differential Poisson bracket and the de Rham differential on M. The latter is mapped to a nilpotent vector field Q of bi-degree (0,1) on T*[1,0](T[0,1]M), and the covariant Hamiltonian action is Q-exact. Abstract

Non intrusive monitoring of animals in the wild is possible using camera trapping framework, which uses cameras triggered by sensors to take a burst of images of animals in their habitat. However camera trapping framework produces a high volume of data (in the order on thousands or millions of images), which must be analyzed by a human expert. In this work, a method for animal species identification in the wild using very deep convolutional neural networks is presented. Multiple versions of the Snapshot Serengeti dataset were used in order to probe the ability of the method to cope with different challenges that camera-trap images demand. The method reached 88.9% of accuracy in Top-1 and 98.1% in Top-5 in the evaluation set using a residual network topology. 17. Action principles for higher and fractional spin gravities

Abstract

We review various off-shell formulations for interacting higher-spin systems in dimensions 3 and 4. Associated with higher-spin systems in spacetime dimension 4 is a Chern-Simons action for a superconnection taking its values in a direct product of an infinite-dimensional algebra of oscillators and a Frobenius algebra. A crucial ingredient of the model is that it elevates the rigid closed and central two-form of Vasiliev's theory to a dynamical 2-form and doubles the higher-spin algebra, thereby considerably reducing the number of possible higher spin invariants and giving a nonzero effective functional on-shell. The two action principles we give for higher-spin systems in 3D are based on Chern-Simons and BF models. In the first case, the theory we give unifies higher-spin gauge fields with fractional-spin fields and an internal sector. In particular, Newton's constant is related to the coupling constant of the internal sector. In the second case, the BF action we review gives the fully nonlinear Prokushkin-Vasiliev, bosonic equations for matter-coupled higher spins in 3D. We present the truncation to a single, real matter field relevant in the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar holographic duality. The link between the various actions we present is the fact that they all borrow ingredients from Topological Field Theory. It has bee conjectured that there is an underlying and unifying 2-dimensional first-quantised description of the previous higher-spin models in 3D and 4D, in the form of a Cattaneo-Felder-like topological action containing fermionic fields., Comment: 41+1 pages. Abstract

Non-intrusive biometrics of animals using images allows to analyze phenotypic populations and individuals with patterns like stripes and spots without affecting the studied subjects. However, non-intrusive biometrics demand a well trained subject or the development of computer vision algorithms that ease the identification task. In this work, an analysis of classic segmentation approaches that require a supervised tuning of their parameters such as threshold, adaptive threshold, histogram equalization, and saturation correction is presented. In contrast, a general unsupervised algorithm using Markov Random Fields (MRF) for segmentation of spots patterns is proposed. Active contours are used to boost results using MRF output as seeds. Abstract

We construct a two-dimensional topological sigma model whose target space is endowed with a Poisson algebra for differential forms. The model consists of an equal number of bosonic and fermionic fields of worldsheet form degrees zero and one. The action is built using exterior products and derivatives, without any reference to any worldsheet metric, and is of the covariant Hamiltonian form. The equations of motion define a universally Cartan integrable system. In addition to gauge symmetries, the model has one rigid nilpotent supersymmetry corresponding to the target space de Rham operator. The rigid and local symmetries of the action, respectively, are equivalent to the Poisson bracket being compatible with the de Rham operator and obeying graded Jacobi identities. Abstract

We describe a class of unified theories of electromagnetism and gravity. The Lagrangian is of the BF type, with a potential for the B-field, the gauge group is U(2) (complexified). Given a choice of the potential function the theory is a deformation of (complex) general relativity and electromagnetism, and describes just two propagating polarisations of the graviton and two of the photon. When gravity is switched off the theory becomes the usual non-linear electrodynamics with a general structure function. The Einstein-Maxwell theory can be recovered by sending some of the parameters of the defining potential to zero, but for any generic choice of the potential the theory is indistinguishable from Einstein-Maxwell at low energies. A real theory is obtained by imposing suitable reality conditions. Abstract

We revisit an old idea that gravity can be unified with Yang-Mills theory by enlarging the gauge group of gravity formulated as gauge theory. Our starting point is an action that describes a generally covariant gauge theory for a group G. The Minkowski background breaks the gauge group by selecting in it a preferred gravitational SU(2) subgroup. We expand the action around this background and find the spectrum of linearized theory to consist of the usual gravitons plus Yang-Mills fields charged under the centralizer of the SU(2) in G. In addition, there is a set of Higgs fields that are charged both under the gravitational and Yang-Mills subgroups. These fields are generically massive and interact with both gravity and Yang-Mills sector in the standard way. The arising interaction of the Yang-Mills sector with gravity is also standard. Parameters such as the Yang-Mills coupling constant and Higgs mass arise from the potential function defining the theory. Thermal energy storage (TES) devices use phase change materials (PCMs) to store and release thermal energy. Control-oriented models are needed to predict the behavior of TES devices and experimental validation is necessary to demonstrate the predictive capabilities of these models. This paper presents an experimental validation of a switched moving boundary (MB) approach for modeling TES devices, where the dynamics of the device are captured with fewer states than traditional models. A graph-based modeling approach is used to model heat flow, while the moving boundary captures the time-varying liquid and solid regions of the TES. The model uses a finite state machine (FSM) to switch between four modes of operation based on the state-of-charge (SOC) of the TES. Results show that the switched MB approach has similar accuracy and lower computational cost compared to traditional modeling approaches when predicting the SOC of an experimental TES device. Abstract

We revisit a propagating torsion gravity theory obtained by introducing a field coupled to the Holst term in the first-order Einstein-Cartan action. The resulting theory has second order field equations, no adjustable coupling constants, and one more propagating degree of freedom as compared to general relativity. When no fermions are present the theory is known to be equivalent to that of a single massless scalar field canonically coupled to gravity. We extend this result to the case with fermions and obtain an effective interaction between the scalar field and the fermionic currents. A class of diffeomorphism invariant gauge theories is studied. The action for this class of theories can be formulated as a generalisation of the well known topological BF-theories with a potential for the B-field or in a pure connection formulation. When the gauge group is chosen to be SU(2) the theory describes gravity. For a larger gauge group G one gets a unified model of gravity and Yang-Mills fields. A background for the theory is chosen which breaks the gauge group G by selecting in it a preferred SU(2) subgroup which describes the gravitational sector. The Yang-Mills sector is described by the part of the gauge group that commutes with this SU(2). Thus, when the action is expanded around this background the spectrum of the linearised theory consists of the usual gravitons plus Yang-Mills fields. Abstract

As freshwater scarcity has become one of the most important environmental and social issues of the 21st century, the way the built environment interacts with water must be reconsidered. Today’s urban water cycle in Curaçao is characterized by linear, centralized, polluting, costly, time and energy consuming and does not contribute to cultural value. Architecture can play part in creating a more efficient and sustainable urban water system, while increasing the public awareness of issues related to the freshwater cycle. Heritage of water typologies and systems like water plantations, cisterns and wells give example of how Curaçao used decentralized micro water catchment systems (MWCS), in the pre-desalination period, to provide freshwater for the communities inhabiting it. In addition to the concept of these heritage inspired designs solutions (HIDS) the concept of current nature-based solutions (NBS), referring to ecosystem-based and biomimetic approaches, are analysed as alternatives. The integration of HIDS and NBS is a much-needed step forward towards an integrated and holistic approach of spatial planning and design in general and water related design and management in particular. ‘Regenerative Ruins’ focuses on the neighbourhood Otrobanda, centrally located in the capital Willemstad of the island Curaçao. The island has a rich history of urbanization in which the natural freshwater cycles have been neglected. As a result, the island is dependent to obtain its freshwater from a centralized desalination plant. The trend to live in the peri-urban area of Willemstad also led to an exodus of the formerly renowned labour district of Otrobanda, resulting in a cityscape dominated by decaying monuments.
