The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) embedded devices is expected to reach 30 billion by 2030, creating a dynamic landscape where diverse devices must coexist. This presents challenges due to the rapid expansion of different architectures and platforms. Addressing these challenges requires a unifi ed solution capable of accommodating various devices while offering a broad range of services to connect them to the Internet effectively. This white paper introduces CROSSCON, a three-year Research and Innovation Action funded under Horizon Europe. CROSSCON aims to tackle current IoT challenges by developing a new open, modular, and universally compatible IoT security stack. This stack is designed to be highly portable and vendor-independent, enabling its deployment across different devices with heterogeneous embedded hardware architectures, including ARM and RISC-V. The CROSSCON consortium consists of 11 partners spanning 8 European countries. This consortium includes 4 academic institutions, 1 major industrial partner, and 5 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The amount of Adaptive Optics (AO) telemetry generated by VIS/NIR ground-based observatories is ever greater, leading to a growing need for a standardised data exchange format to support performance analysis and AO research and development activities that involve large-scale telemetry mining, processing, and curation. This paper introduces the Adaptive Optics Telemetry (AOT) data exchange format as a standard for sharing AO telemetry from visible/infrared ground-based observatories. AOT is based on the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) and aims to provide unambiguous and consistent data access across various systems and configurations, including natural and single/multiple laser guide-star AO systems. We designed AOT focused on two key use cases: atmospheric turbulence parameter estimation and point-spread function reconstruction (PSF-R). We prototyped and tested the design using existing AO telemetry datasets from multiple systems: single conjugate with natural and laser guide stars, tomographic systems with multi-channel wavefront sensors, single and multi wavefront correctors in systems featuring either a Shack-Hartmann or Pyramid as main wavefront sensors. The AOT file structure has been thoroughly defined, specifying data fields, descriptions, data types, units, and expected dimensions. To support this format, we have developed a Python package that enables data conversion, reading, writing and exploration of AOT files, which has been made publicly available and compatible with a general-purpose Python package manager. We demonstrate the flexibility of the AOT format by packaging data from five different instruments, installed on different telescopes.

Single cell analysis of skeletal muscle (SM) tissue is a fundamental tool for understanding many neuromuscular disorders. For this analysis to be reliable and reproducible, identification of individual fibres within microscopy images (segmentation) of SM tissue should be precise. There is currently no tool or pipeline that makes automatic and precise segmentation and curation of images of SM tissue cross-sections possible. Biomedical scientists in this field rely on custom tools and general machine learning (ML) models, both followed by labour intensive and subjective manual interventions to get the segmentation right. We believe that automated, precise, reproducible segmentation is possible by training ML models. However, there are currently no good quality, publicly available annotated imaging datasets available for ML model training. In this paper we release NCL-SM: a high quality bioimaging dataset of 46 human tissue sections from healthy control subjects and from patients with genetically diagnosed muscle pathology. These images include $>$ 50k manually segmented muscle fibres (myofibres). In addition we also curated high quality myofibres and annotated reasons for rejecting low quality myofibres and regions in SM tissue images, making this data completely ready for downstream analysis. The GRAVITY instrument has been revolutionary for near-infrared interferometry by pushing sensitivity and precision to previously unknown limits. With the upgrade of GRAVITY and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in GRAVITY+, these limits will be pushed even further, with vastly improved sky coverage, as well as faint-science and high-contrast capabilities. This upgrade includes the implementation of wide-field off-axis fringe-tracking, new adaptive optics systems on all Unit Telescopes, and laser guide stars in an upgraded facility. GRAVITY+ will open up the sky to the measurement of black hole masses across cosmic time in hundreds of active galactic nuclei, use the faint stars in the Galactic centre to probe General Relativity, and enable the characterisation of dozens of young exoplanets to study their formation, bearing the promise of another scientific revolution to come at the VLTI., Comment: Published in the ESO Messenger

In this work, a multifractal framework is proposed to investigate the effects of current sheets in solar wind turbulence. By using multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis coupled with surrogate methods and volatility, two solar wind magnetic field time series are investigated, one with current sheets and one without current sheets. Despite the lack of extreme-events intermittent bursts in the current sheet-free series, both series are shown to be strongly multifractal, although the current sheet-free series displays an almost linear behavior for the scaling exponent of structure functions. Long-range correlations are shown to be the main source of multifractality for the series without current sheets, while a combination of heavy-tail distribution and nonlinear correlations are responsible for multifractality in the series with current sheets. Large amounts of Adaptive-Optics (AO) control loop data and telemetry are currently inaccessible to end-users. Broadening access to those data has the potential to change the AO landscape on many fronts, addressing several use-cases such as derivation of the system's PSF, turbulence characterisation and optimisation of system control. We address one of the biggest obstacles to sharing these data: the lack of standardisation, which hinders access. We propose an object-oriented Python package for AO telemetry, whose data model abstracts the user from an underlining archive-ready data exchange standard based on the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS). Its design supports data from a wide range of existing and future AO systems, either in raw format or abstracted from actual instrument details. We exemplify its usage with data from active AO systems on 10m-class observatories, of which two are currently supported (AOF and Keck), with plans for more.

We have successfully functionalized 5 layers of TCVD-grown graphene by photoassisted transfer hydrogenation reaction with formic acid, in order to increase its nonlinear optical response and laser-induced damage resilience. Using the functionalized graphene samples, we were able to fully characterize sub-10 fs ultrashort laser pulses using THG dispersion-scan, with results that are in excellent agreement with the ones obtained with pristine graphene samples.

Capsule networks (CapsNets) are an emerging trend in image processing. In contrast to a convolutional neural network, CapsNets are not vulnerable to object deformation, as the relative spatial information of the objects is preserved across the network. However, their complexity is mainly related to the capsule structure and the dynamic routing mechanism, which makes it almost unreasonable to deploy a CapsNet, in its original form, in a resource-constrained device powered by a small microcontroller (MCU). In an era where intelligence is rapidly shifting from the cloud to the edge, this high complexity imposes serious challenges to the adoption of CapsNets at the very edge. To tackle this issue, we present an API for the execution of quantized CapsNets in Arm Cortex-M and RISC-V MCUs. Our software kernels extend the Arm CMSIS-NN and RISC-V PULP-NN to support capsule operations with 8-bit integers as operands. Along with it, we propose a framework to perform post-training quantization of a CapsNet. Results show a reduction in memory footprint of almost 75%, with accuracy loss ranging from 0.07% to 0.18%. In terms of throughput, our Arm Cortex-M API enables the execution of primary capsule and capsule layers with medium-sized kernels in just 119.94 and 90.60 milliseconds (ms), respectively (STM32H755ZIT6U, Cortex-M7 @ 480 MHz). For the GAP-8 SoC (RISC-V RV32IMCXpulp @ 170 MHz), the latency drops to 7.02 and 38.03 ms, respectively.

We present a new variant of dispersion scan (d-scan) based on surface third-harmonic generation (STHG) and a ptychographic algorithm taylored for full retrieval (amplitude and phase) of broadband laser pulses. We demonstrate the technique by temporally measuring and compressing few-cycle pulses with 7 fs and 2.5 nJ from a Ti:Sapphire oscillator, using a sapphire window as the nonlinear medium. The results are in very good agreement with standard second-harmonic d-scan measurements based on a nonlinear crystal. The intrinsically broadband and phase-matching-independent nature of STHG make this technique very suitable for the characterization of ultrashort laser pulses over a broad wavelength range extending into the mid-infrared., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Security is one of the main challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT devices are mainly powered by low-cost microcontrollers (MCUs) that typically lack basic hardware security mechanisms to separate security-critical applications from less critical components. Recently, Arm has started to release Cortex-M MCUs enhanced with TrustZone technology (i.e., TrustZone-M), a system-wide security solution aiming at providing robust protection for IoT devices. Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) relying on TrustZone hardware have been perceived as safe havens for securing mobile devices. However, for the past few years, considerable effort has gone into unveiling hundreds of vulnerabilities and proposing a collection of relevant defense techniques to address several issues. While new TEE solutions built on TrustZone-M start flourishing, the lessons gathered from the research community appear to be falling short, as these new systems are trapping into the same pitfalls of the past. In this paper, we present uTango, the first multi-world TEE for modern IoT devices. uTango proposes a novel architecture aiming at tackling the major architectural deficiencies currently affecting TrustZone(-M)-assisted TEEs. In particular, we leverage the very same TrustZone hardware primitives used by dual-world implementations to create multiple and equally secure execution environments within the normal world. We demonstrate the benefits of uTango by conducting an extensive evaluation on a real TrustZone-M hardware platform, i.e., Arm Musca-B1. uTango will be open-sourced and freely available on GitHub in hopes of engaging academia and industry on securing the foreseeable trillion IoT devices.
