A novel nickel-molybdenum carbide-graphite nanofiber composite is introduced as an electrocatalyst for ethanol electrooxidation. The proposed nanofibers have been prepared by calcinating electrospun nanofibers composed of nickel acetate tetrahydrate, molybdenum chloride, and polyvinyl alcohol. The calcination process was conducted at different temperatures (700, 850, and 1000°C) under a nitrogen gas atmosphere with a heating rate of 2.5 deg/min and a holding time of 5 h. Physicochemical characterizations have indicated that nickel acetate is entirely reduced to nickel metal during the sintering process, and molybdenum has bonded with carbon to produce molybdenum carbide. At the same time, the used polymer has been pyrolyzed to produce a carbon nanofiber matrix embedding formed inorganic nanoparticles. Electrochemical measurements concluded that molybdenum content and calcination temperature should be controlled to maximize the electrocatalytic activity of the proposed catalyst. Typically, the oxidation peak current density was 28.5, 28.8, 51.5, 128.3, 25.6, and 3 mA/cm2 for nanofibers prepared from an electrospun solution containing 0, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 35 wt% molybdenum carbide, respectively. Moreover, it was observed that increasing the calcination temperature distinctly improves the electrocatalytic activity. Kinetic studies have indicated that the reaction order is close to zero with a reaction temperature-dependent value. Moreover, it was detected that the electrooxidation reaction of ethanol over the proposed nanofiber composite follows the Arrhenius equation. The determined activation energy is 33 kJ/mol, which indicates good catalytic activity for the introduced nanofibers. Through the application of a set of visualization-based tools and the general linear model (GLM), the optimal conditions that generate the highest current density were identified. The increasing presence of pharmaceutical pollutants, such as acetaminophen, in water bodies poses a significant environmental challenge due to their persistence and potential toxicity. This study investigated the enhanced photodegradation of acetaminophen using ZnO-NiO nanofibers as superior photocatalysts. The nanofibers synthesized with varying NiO contents (designated as ZN0.5, ZN1, ZN1.5, and ZN2), were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman, FTIR, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to elucidate their structural, morphological, and optical properties. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the nanofibers exhibit high thermal stability, with major weight loss attributed to the decomposition of the polymer matrix and residual organics. The BET analysis revealed that the specific surface area remains stable after increasing the NiO content up to a certain ratio. This stability correlates with the enhanced photocatalytic performance due to increased light absorption and improved charge separation. The diffuse reflectance spectra and Kubelka–Munk plots demonstrated a reduction in bandgap energy with higher NiO content, facilitating greater visible light absorption. Photocatalytic experiments under visible light irradiation, in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), showed that the ZN1.5 nanofibers achieved the highest acetaminophen degradation rate, i.e., 92%, within 3 h. Mechanistic studies, supported by radical trapping experiments, revealed that the improved photocatalytic efficiency is due to the synergistic effects of ZnO and NiO heterojunctions, which enhance charge separation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This research highlights the potential of ZnO-NiO nanofibers as effective photocatalysts for the degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants. The findings demonstrate that optimizing the composition and structure of nanofibers can significantly improve their environmental remediation capabilities, providing a promising solution for sustainable water treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent candidates for a range of applications because of their numerous advantages, such as high surface area, porosity, and thermal and chemical stability. In this study, microwave (MW) irradiation is used as a novel stimulus in vitro controlled release of Doxorubicin (DOX) from two MOFs, namely Fe-BTC and MIL-53(Al), to enhance drug delivery in cancer therapy. DOX was encapsulated into Fe-BTC and MIL-53(Al) with drug-loading efficiencies of up to 67% for Fe-BTC and 40% for MIL-53(Al). Several characterization tests, including XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, FE-SEM, and EDX, confirmed both MOF samples' drug-loading and -release mechanisms. Fe-BTC exhibited a substantial improvement in drug-release efficiency (54%) when exposed to microwave irradiation at pH 7.4 for 50 min, whereas 11% was achieved without the external modality. A similar result was observed at pH 5.3; however, in both cases, the release efficiencies were substantially higher with microwave exposure (40%) than without (6%). In contrast, MIL-53(Al) exhibited greater sensitivity to pH, displaying a higher release rate (66%) after 38 min at pH 5.3 compared to 55% after 50 min at pH 7.4 when subjected to microwave irradiation. These results highlight the potential of both MOFs as highly heat-responsive to thermal stimuli. The results of the MTT assay demonstrated the cell viability across different concentrations of the MOFs after two days of incubation. This suggests that MOFs hold promise as potential candidates for tumor targeting. Additionally, the fact that the cells maintained their viability at different durations of microwave exposure confirms that the latter is a safe modality for triggering drug release from MOFs. Background: Coronary tortuosity (CT) had different definitions and scores in literature with unclear pathophysiological impact. Objectives: To study degree of CT and it's relation to ischemic changes in patients with angina but normal coronary angiography (CA). Methods: We conducted a prospective study at University hospitals between May 2016 and January 2017. We included 200 consecutive patients who underwent CA due to chest pain assumed to be of cardiac origin, and their CA was normal (no diameter stenosis >30%, nor myocardial bridging). Patients were prospectively divided into 2 groups based on the presence (n = 113) or absence (n = 87) of ischemic changes during stress study and compared for clinical, echocardiographic and CA characteristics. A newly proposed Tortuosity Severity Index (TSI) was developed into significant (mild/moderate CT with more than 4 curvatures in total, or severe/extreme CT with any number of curvatures) or not significant TSI (mild CT with curvatures less than or equal to 4 curvatures in total). Results: Patients with ischemic changes had the highest rate of CT (76.5 vs 18%, p = 0.004) compared to those without. CT mostly affects the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery in mid and distal segments. Females, elderly, and hypertensives with left ventricular hypertrophy were strongly related to CT.
