Abstract

Statistical studies show that stars of GK spectral types, with masses below 1.1 Sun mass, are depleted in hot Jupiters. This finding is evidence of tidal orbital decay during the main-sequence lifetime. Theoretical considerations show that in some configurations, the tidal energy dissipation can be boosted by non-linear effects in dynamical tides, which are wave-like responses to tidal forcing. To probe the regime of these dynamical tides in GK stars, we searched for orbital period shortening for 6 selected hot Jupiters in systems with 0.8-1 Sun mass host stars: HATS-18, HIP 65A, TrES-3, WASP-19, WASP-43, and WASP-173A. For the hot Jupiters of our sample, we analysed transit timing data sets based on mid-transit points homogeneously determined from observations performed with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and high-quality data available in the literature. For the TrES-3 system, we also used new transit light curves we acquired with ground-based telescopes. The mid-transit times were searched for shortening of orbital periods through statistical testing of quadratic transit ephemerides. Theoretical predictions on the dissipation rate for dynamical tides were calculated under the regimes of internal gravity waves (IGWs) undergoing wave breaking (WB) in stellar centres and weak non-linear (WNL) wave-wave interactions in radiative layers. Stellar parameters of the host stars, such as mass and age, which were used in those computations, were homogeneously redetermined using evolutionary models with the Bayesian inference. We found that transit times follow the refined linear ephemerides for all ultra-hot Jupiters of our sample. Non-detection of orbital decay allowed us to place lower constraints on the tidal dissipation rates in those planet-star systems. Abstract

We present the results of our search for nearby planetary companions of transiting hot Jupiters in 12 planetary systems: HAT-P-24, HAT-P-39, HAT-P-42, HAT-P-50, KELT-2, KELT-15, KELT-17, WASP-23, WASP-63, WASP-76, WASP-79, and WASP-161. Our analysis was based on multi-sector time-series photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and precise transit timing data sets. We detected no additional transiting planets down to the 2-4 Earth radii regime. For ten hot Jupiters, no departure from linear transit ephemerides was observed. Whilst we refute long-term variations of the orbital period for WASP-161 b, which were claimed in the literature, we notice a tentative hint of the orbital period shortening for WASP-79 b. In addition, we spot a short-period transit timing variation for KELT-2A b with the characteristics typical of the so-called exomoon corridor. Abstract

As evidenced by recent survey results, majority of asteroids are slow rotators (P>12 h), but lack spin and shape models due to selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons. Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to 60 hours. We aim to obtain their full light curves and reconstruct their spins and shapes. We also precisely scale the models, typically with an accuracy of a few percent. We used wide sets of dense light curves for spin and shape reconstructions via light-curve inversion. Precisely scaling them with thermal data was not possible here because of poor infrared data: large bodies are too bright for WISE mission. Therefore, we recently launched a campaign among stellar occultation observers, to scale these models and to verify the shape solutions, often allowing us to break the mirror pole ambiguity. The presented scheme resulted in shape models for 16 slow rotators, most of them for the first time. Fitting them to stellar occultations resolved previous inconsistencies in size determinations. For around half of the targets, this fitting also allowed us to identify a clearly preferred pole solution, thus removing the ambiguity inherent to light-curve inversion. We also address the influence of the uncertainty of the shape models on the derived diameters. Overall, our project has already provided reliable models for around 50 slow rotators. Such well-determined and scaled asteroid shapes will, e.g. constitute a solid basis for density determinations when coupled with mass information. Abstract

The loneliness of hot Jupiters supports the high-eccentricity migration as a primary path leading to the formation of systems with those planets stripped of any close-in planetary companions. Here we present the null results of searches for low-mass planets close to hot Jupiters in 10 planetary systems: HAT-P-4, HAT-P-10, HAT-P-12, HAT-P-17, HAT-P-19, HAT-P-32, HAT-P-44, Qatar-6, TrES-4, and WASP-48. We employed multi-sector time-series photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite enhanced with new ground-based transit light curves to determine the sizes of hypothetical planets that might still avoid being detected. We redetermined transit parameters for the known hot Jupiters using a homogenous approach. We refuted transit timing variations for HAT-P-12 b, claimed recently in the literature. The transit timing data permitted us to place tighter constraints on third bodies in HAT-P-19 and HAT-P-32 systems detected in Doppler measurements. Abstract

Hot Jupiters have been perceived as loners devoid of planetary companions in close orbital proximity. However, recent discoveries based on space-borne precise photometry have revealed that at least some fraction of giant planets coexists with low-mass planets in compact orbital architectures. We report detecting a 1.446-day transit-like signal in the photometric time series acquired with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for the WASP-84 system, which is known to contain a hot Jupiter on a circular 8.5-day orbit. The planet was validated based on TESS photometry, and its signal was distilled in radial velocity measurements. The joint analysis of photometric and Doppler data resulted in a multi-planetary model of the system. With a mass of $15\, M_{\oplus}$, radius of $2\, R_{\oplus}$, and orbital distance of 0.024 au, the new planet WASP-84 c was classified as a hot super-Earth with the equilibrium temperature of 1300 K. Abstract

Results from the TESS mission showed that previous studies strngly underestimated the number of slow rotators, revealing the importance of studying those asteroids. For most slowly rotating asteroids (P > 12), no spin and shape model is available because of observation selection effects. This hampers determination of their thermal parameters and accurate sizes. We continue our campaign in minimising selection effects among main belt asteroids. Our targets are slow rotators with low light-curve amplitudes. The goal is to provide their scaled spin and shape models together with thermal inertia, albedo, and surface roughness to complete the statistics. Rich multi-apparition datasets of dense light curves are supplemented with data from Kepler and TESS. In addition to data in the visible range, we also use thermal data from infrared space observatories (IRAS, Akari and WISE) in a combined optimisation process using the Convex Inversion Thermophysical Model (CITPM). This novel method has so far been applied to only a few targets, and in this work we further validate the method. We present the models of 16 slow rotators. All provide good fits to both thermal and visible data. The obtained sizes are on average accurate at the 5% precision, with diameters in the range from 25 to 145 km. The rotation periods of our targets range from 11 to 59 hours, and the thermal inertia covers a wide range of values, from 2 to <400 SI units, not showing any correlation with the period. With this work we increase the sample of slow rotators with reliable spin and shape models and known thermal inertia by 40%. Abstract

Context. Recent results for asteroid rotation periods from the TESS mission showed how strongly previous studies have underestimated the number of slow rotators, revealing the importance of studying those targets. For most slowly rotating asteroids (those with P > 12 h), no spin and shape model is available because of observation selection effects. This hampers determination of their thermal parameters and accurate sizes. Also, it is still unclear whether signatures of different surface material properties can be seen in thermal inertia determined from mid-infrared thermal flux fitting. Aims. We continue our campaign in minimising selection effects among main belt asteroids. Our targets are slow rotators with low light-curve amplitudes. Our goal is to provide their scaled spin and shape models together with thermal inertia, albedo, and surface roughness to complete the statistics. Methods. Rich multi-apparition datasets of dense light curves are supplemented with data from Kepler and TESS spacecrafts. In addition to data in the visible range, we also use thermal data from infrared space observatories (mainly IRAS, Akari and WISE) in a combined optimisation process using the Convex Inversion Thermophysical Model. This novel method has so far been applied to only a few targets, and therefore in this work we further validate the method itself. Results. We present the models of 16 slow rotators, including two updated models. All provide good fits to both thermal and visible data.The obtained sizes are on average accurate at the 5% precision level, with diameters found to be in the range from 25 to 145 km. The rotation periods of our targets range from 11 to 59 h, and the thermal inertia covers a wide range of values, from 2 to <400 J m−2 s−1∕2 K−1, not showing any correlation with the period. Abstract

The contribution of paleontology in relation to the creation of a geopark is emphasized by fossils and related geology at Anjohibe and Berivotra in northwestern Madagascar. This research note presents preliminary findings while employing a simple rating system to assess two fossil-rich areas of Madagascar and their potential geo-touristic values that would be essential for the development of a geopark. The point is made that working towards geopark status is likely to place an increased value and appreciation of the geology. Essential criteria for the development of a geopark include the presence of important geoheritage and geosite protection specified according to a management plan. Local community benefits can be derived through the promotion of natural landscape qualities and tourism-related services. This preliminary research project is a starting point in recognizing what needs to be done to value and garner the support of local people in conserving, the geoheritage of northwestern Madagascar.

Ślączka reply: We welcome the comments by our Slovakian colleagues and their critique of our results, particularly as we have discussed and published papers together several times about our ideas, sometimes, more or less, disputable (Aubrecht et al.2003, 2006; Krobicki et al.2003; Krobicki, Aubrecht & Golonka, 2003; Golonka et al.2006; Pieńkowski et al.2008). We are pleased to see such warm reaction to our work/paper, which is focused on one of the rudimentary questions in the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) area. How many/what kind of olistoliths/olistostromes occur within the inner structure of the PKB, and when and why did they originate mostly during the Palaeogene part of the Mesozoic–Cenozoic history of this region? We expected this discussion earlier. The content of our paper was presented at the 6th Meeting of the Central European Tectonic Studies Group (CETeG) in Upohlav, Pieniny Klippen Belt, Slovakia (Cieszkowski et al.2008), and later, at the XIX Congress of the Carpathian–Balkan Geological Association in Thessaloniki, Greece (Cieszkowski et al.2010; Golonka et al.2010). Some ideas were also briefly mentioned in the paper by Cieszkowski et al. (2009) in a journal issue edited by D. Plašienka. We assume that the comments are based on recent investigation, because the authors list the grants received to conduct the research. Therefore, the submitted comments sometimes present a point of view different from that published previously by some of the authors of the comments (RA, JM) (see Aubrecht et al.2003; Krobicki, Aubrecht & Golonka, 2003; Wierzbowski et al.2006; Pieńkowski et al.2008). The statement, ‘Certainly there are many still unresolved problems in the geology of the PKB, and it ought to be said that the co-authors of this discussion also do not fully agree with all interpretations formulated and illustrated by the first author’ perhaps explains this controversy. Of course, we agree that ‘there are many still unresolved problems in the geology of the PKB’. We also agree with the statement ‘olistostromes and olistoliths are quite frequent, but not omnipresent’. Abstract

The Western Outer Carpathians have a nappe structure with northwards trending stacks of nappes and thrust sheets which are thrust over each other and over the crystalline basement rocks. There are sedimentary subsidence basins, some of which contain black organic-rich shales and have recently become an important target for exploration for shale gas and shale oil. The Jurassic Mikulov Formation of the Mikulov Basin, the Lower Cretaceous Verovice and Spas formations of the Protosilesian Basin and the Rudawka Rymanowska Menilite Formation of the Krosno Basin all contain organic-rich rocks. Parts of the anoxic shales were buried to depths of a few thousand metres during the folding and overthrusting movements. The best structural conditions for unconventional hydrocarbon exploration occur at the depth of few thousand metres within the North European Platform below the Carpathian nappes and within the Silesian, Skole and Dukla nappes. Abstract

Context. As evidenced by recent survey results, the majority of asteroids are slow rotators (spin periods longer than 12 h), but lack spin and shape models because of selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60 km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons. Aims. Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to 60 h. We aim to obtain their full light curves and reconstruct their spins and shapes. We also precisely scale the models, typically with an accuracy of a few percent. Methods. We used wide sets of dense light curves for spin and shape reconstructions via light-curve inversion. Precisely scaling them with thermal data was not possible here because of poor infrared datasets: large bodies tend to saturate in WISE mission detectors. Therefore, we recently also launched a special campaign among stellar occultation observers, both in order to scale these models and to verify the shape solutions, often allowing us to break the mirror pole ambiguity. Results. The presented scheme resulted in shape models for 16 slow rotators, most of them for the first time. Fitting them to chords from stellar occultation timings resolved previous inconsistencies in size determinations. For around half of the targets, this fitting also allowed us to identify a clearly preferred pole solution from the pair of two mirror pole solutions, thus removing the ambiguity inherent to light-curve inversion. We also address the influence of the uncertainty of the shape models on the derived diameters. Conclusions. Overall, our project has already provided reliable models for around 50 slow rotators. Abstract

Context. Recent results for asteroid rotation periods from the TESS mission showed how strongly previous studies have underestimated the number of slow rotators, revealing the importance of studying those targets. For most slowly rotating asteroids (those with P > 12 h), no spin and shape model is available because of observation selection effects. This hampers determination of their thermal parameters and accurate sizes. Also, it is still unclear whether signatures of different surface material properties can be seen in thermal inertia determined from mid-infrared thermal flux fitting. Aims. We continue our campaign in minimising selection effects among main belt asteroids. Our targets are slow rotators with low light-curve amplitudes. Our goal is to provide their scaled spin and shape models together with thermal inertia, albedo, and surface roughness to complete the statistics. Methods. Rich multi-apparition datasets of dense light curves are supplemented with data from Kepler and TESS spacecrafts. In addition to data in the visible range, we also use thermal data from infrared space observatories (mainly IRAS, Akari and WISE) in a combined optimisation process using the Convex Inversion Thermophysical Model. This novel method has so far been applied to only a few targets, and therefore in this work we further validate the method itself. Results. We present the models of 16 slow rotators, including two updated models. All provide good fits to both thermal and visible data.The obtained sizes are on average accurate at the 5% precision level, with diameters found to be in the range from 25 to 145 km. The rotation periods of our targets range from 11 to 59 h, and the thermal inertia covers a wide range of values, from 2 to <400 J m−2 s−1∕2 K−1, not showing any correlation with the period. Abstract

Comparative research carried out within two different basins, one in the Carpathians of Poland (Late Jurassic to Early Miocene) and another in the Apenninic-Maghrebian mountain chain of Sicily (Triassic-Miocene), indicate significant similarity not only in their evolution but also in the sedimentary features of horizons with olistoliths. The olistolith-bearing units are genetically related to stages of tectonic evolution and are independent of the size of the basins and of duration of these stages. However, the observed differences in composition and size of olistoliths suggested, among the others relationship with the size of source areas and thickness of their sedimentary cover.

Abstract

International audience; Following the major mass extinctions at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, reef ecosystems slowly recovered and scleractinian corals appeared progressively as the most efficient framework producers of Cenozoic times. This occurred, however, in several steps involving successively speciation and diversification of assemblages, acquisition of reef-building capacities, and expansion of reef ecosystems. Although buildups were represented mainly by reef mounds and mud mounds from Danian to early Eocene times, typical framework reefs dominated by coral assemblages became the most common type of bioconstruction from the middle Eocene, Buildups remained relatively scarce during the early Tertiary, however, and acquired a widespread development from the late Oligocene onwards, with an acme of reef expansion during the early to middle Miocene. Distribution, abundance, and biotic composition of buildups are driven by the interplay of many abiotic and biotic factors acting at various temporal and spatial scales. Interaction of climate and plate tectonics in controlling oceanic circulation and potential marine seaways permitting faunal exchanges and dispersion led to the splitting of the cosmopolitan Tethyan reef province of the Late Cretaceous–early Tertiary into the three major reef provinces of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Indo-Pacific during Miocene times. The latitudinal contraction of the tropical–subtropical belt by taking the Mediterranean region out of the reef belt finally left, at the end of the Miocene, the two main reef Provinces existing today, the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacific. The very gradual acquisition of modern reef characteristics during the Tertiary contrasts with rather sudden biota turnovers, in particular at the Eocene–Oligocene and at the Oligocene–Miocene boundaries. The primary characteristics of Tertiary buildups as recorded in the PaleoReef database clearly appear to exert major control upon their reservoir potential.

45. Climate Change Anxiety Assessment: The Psychometric Properties of the Polish Version of the Climate Anxiety Scale.

Abstract

The Climate Anxiety Scale (CAS) is a 13-item questionnaire for assessing climate anxiety (CA) as a psychological response to climate change. The CAS consists of two subscales, namely, cognitive impairment and functional impairment. This study aimed to validate the Polish version of the CAS. The sample included 603 respondents (344 females, 247 males, and 12 non-binary), aged 18-70 years ( M = 25.32, SD = 9.59). Based on the exploratory factor analysis results, we proposed a 3-factor solution (i.e., intrusive symptoms, reflections on CA, and functional impairment), which seems to be theoretically more consistent with the content of the CAS statements. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the original 2-factor solution and the 3-factor one had a satisfactory and a good fit to the data, respectively, as well as both were invariant across different gender, age, and educational level categories. Despite the fact that the 3-factor solution had the best-fit indices, we recommended to examine the CAS structure in different samples and use the overall CAS score in cross-cultural research. Cognitive and functional impairment subscales were positively correlated with personal experience of climate change, behavioral engagement, environmental identity, and environmental motives, but they were negatively correlated with climate change denial and sense of safety. The CAS subscales were correlated with depressive symptoms, but contrary to expectations, they were not associated with anxiety symptoms and any cognitive coping strategies. The Polish version of the CAS has satisfactory psychometric properties. Overall, we reported low CA levels in the Polish sample. 46. Collision with Gondwana or with Baltica? Ordovician magmatic arc volcanism in the Marmarosh Massif (Eastern Carpathians, Ukraine).

Abstract

The pre-Alpine Marmarosh Massif is a tectonically complex unit of the crystalline basement within the Eastern Outer Carpathians. In the eastern (Ukrainian) segment of this massif, two units have been identified-the Bilyi Potok Nappe and the Dilove Nappe. Petrological investigations coupled with zircon U-Pb dating were performed on metavolcanic rocks (porphyroids) and their phyllite host rocks, sampled from three locations within the Dilove Nappe. The geochemical characteristics of the meta-rhyodacite porphyroids revealed a volcanic arc affinity of the protolith, with U-Pb zircon ages of 452.8 ± 1.5 Ma and 461.5 ± 1.6 Ma and zircon saturation temperatures in the range of 823-892 °C. The phyllite host rocks (meta-tuff) yield a U-Pb zircon maximum estimate for the eruption age at 584.7 ± 2.9 Ma. Peak amphibolite-facies metamorphism (M1) was estimated at the pressure of 600-900 MPa with a temperature range of 560-600 °C. Retrogression (M2), possibly related to Alpine nappe stacking and shearing, is assumed to have taken place at 200-250 MPa and 384-222 °C. The volcanic arc is interpreted as an early Caledonian arc that was subsequently accreted to the margin of Baltica during the closure of the easternmost Tornquist Ocean rather than Cenerian (early Paleozoic) orogenic events on the margin of East Gondwana., Supplementary Information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s00531-022-02228-8., (© The Author(s) 2022.)

47. Evaluation a range of the motion of knee during femoral lengthening by Ilizarov method.

Abstract

Background. Extensory contracture of the knee joint is a constant problem during thigh lengthening procedures. Its occurrence is dependent on such factors as rehabilitation, the construction of the Ilizarov apparatus, the extent of the lengthening, and the etiology of the shortening. , Material and methods. Between 1998 and 2001, 34 children were treated for thigh shortening. Contracture occurred in all cases., Results. The dynamics of the lengthening process were strictly associated with the development and elimination of any contracture that appeared. If the indicated rules are followed, extensory contracture of the knee joints always resolved within several months after removal of the Ilizarov apparatus., Conclusions. The importance of the proper rehabilitation program is equal to that of the surgical procedure. Limiting the number of impulses and localizing them is helpful in later rehabilitation.
