Abstract

Laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become a prominent analytical technique in recent years for real‐time characterization of soil properties. However, only a few studies of soil chemical and physical properties have been reported using LIBS until recently. The aims of this article are to: (a) provide the basic principles of LIBS for soil analysis and (b) present the use of LIBS for the analysis of soil pH, soil texture and the humification degree of soil organic matter (SOM). The second article will cover soil classification and soil elemental analysis, including plant nutrients, carbon (C) and toxic elements. LIBS is a multi‐element analytical technique based on atomic spectroscopy that employs a high‐energy laser pulse focused onto a sample surface to create a transient plasma. It is a spectroscopic analytical technique that requires very little or no sample preparation, examines each sample in seconds, and offers a flexible platform for the examination of a broad array of elements in the sample. LIBS also can be used to infer soil chemical and physical properties if a relationship exists between the chemical composition and the soil properties. With proper calibration, LIBS has a great potential for real‐time in‐field soil analysis and precision farming that could lead to improved soil management and agricultural production, and reduced agricultural environmental impacts. 37. Predicting long-term organic carbon dynamics in organically amended soils using the CQESTR model

Abstract

Purpose: The CQESTR model is a process-based C model recently developed to simulate soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics and uses readily available or easily measurable input parameters. The current version of CQESTR (v. 2.0) has been validated successfully with a number of datasets from agricultural sites in North America but still needs to be tested in other geographic areas and soil types under diverse organic management systems. Materials and methods: We evaluated the predictive performance of CQESTR to simulate long-term (34 years) soil organic C (SOC) changes in a SOM-depleted European soil either unamended or amended with solid manure, liquid manure, or crop residue. Results and discussion: Measured SOC levels declined over the study period in the unamended soil, remained constant in the soil amended with crop residues, and tended to increase in the soils amended with manure, especially with solid manure. Linear regression analysis of measured SOC contents and CQESTR predictions resulted in a correlation coefficient of 0.626 (P < 0.001) and a slope and an intercept not significantly different from 1 and 0, respectively (95% confidence level). The mean squared deviation and root mean square error were relatively small. Simulated values fell within the 95% confidence interval of the measured SOC, and predicted errors were mainly associated with data scattering. Conclusions: The CQESTR model was shown to predict, with a reasonable degree of accuracy, the organic C dynamics in the soils examined. The CQESTR performance, however, could be improved by adding an additional parameter to differentiate between pre-decomposed organic amendments with varying degrees of stability. © 2012 Springer-Verlag (outside the USA).

45. Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen After Application of Nine Organic Amendments

Abstract

The amount and type of C‐containing amendments applied to soil can have an influence on soil organic carbon (SOC) levels. To test the hypothesis that amendment type is more important than amount, we applied 250 g C m−2as manure, legume foliage, wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) residue, municipal biosolid, wood sawdust, brassica (Brassica napusL.) residue, composted wheat residue, sucrose, and cotton linters to both fallow soil and an annual winter wheat crop for five consecutive years. After an additional 3.5 yr with no inputs and all plots being fallow, the SOC of biosolid, manure, and wood amended plots were significantly (P< 0.0001) greater than the unamended check. The application of biosolid increased SOC 492 g m−2, and manure increased SOC 316 g m−2, over the fallow check plots in the top 300 kg m−2of soil (approximately 0–25 cm). The increase in SOC relative to the check ranged from 0 to 39% of the amendment C applied. The SOC content was 482 g m−2greater under continuous winter wheat than under fallow. The amendment and wheat crop effects on soil C and N changed little during the 3.5 yr after treatments ended, indicating that decomposition occurred soon after application. Wood sawdust was unique in that it increased SOC even though it was low in N content, and it changed the soil C/N ratio from 12.3 to 13.4. This field research demonstrated that amendments applied at the same C rate can have variable effects on SOC accretion.

47. Macronutrients in Soil and Wheat as Affected by a Long-Term Tillage and Nitrogen Fertilization in Winter Wheat–Fallow Rotation.

Abstract

The insights gained from the long-term impacts of tillage and N fertilization on soil fertility are crucial for the development of sustainable cropping systems. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effects of 75 years of tillage and N fertilization on macronutrients in soil and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) tissues grown in a winter wheat–summer fallow rotation. The experiment included three types of tillage (disc, DP; sweep, SW; and moldboard, MP) and five N application rates (0, 45, 90, 135, and 180 kg ha−1). Soil and tissue samples were analyzed for the concentration of total N, S, and C, Mehlich III extractable P, K, Mg, Ca in the soil, and the total concentration of the same nutrients in wheat tissue. Soil N concentration was significantly greater under DP (1.10 g kg−1) than under MP (1.03 g kg−1). The P concentration in upper 20 cm soil depth increased with increased N rates. Comparison of experiment plots to a nearby undisturbed pasture revealed a decline of P (32%), SOC (34%), Mg (77%), and Ca (86%) in the top 10 cm soil depth. The results suggest that DP with high N rates could reduce the macronutrient decline in soil and plant over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. The Effects of Erosion and Desurfacing on Soil Properties and Productivity of a Typic Haplustoll

Abstract

Topsoil is a valuable resource to humankind. Current food production cannot be continued without this resource. Topsoil protection efforts must be continued or increased to meet future demands of mankind. Erosion reduces productivity but losses may not be detected until land is no longer suitable to produce crops economically, furthermore, other variables may mask the relationship. Technology advancement including improved seed varieties, modern fertilizer, and herbicide have doubled or tripled many North American crop yields in the past 50 years. The impact of topsoil removal is largely determined by subsoil properties as they affect root growth, soil available water and nutrient availability in the soil. A new soil environment is encountered when topsoil is removed either by natural or artificial erosion. This new environment in most cases is less suited for plant growth than original topsoil. Germination and emergence are often poor because of less than ideal soil physical properties. Topsoil loss may alter root system growth. The potential for nutrient and water uptake consequently depends on the new level of soil nutrients and available water surrounding the root system, and the morphology of the root system. Topsoil removal may change resistance of surface aggregates to the beating action of raindrops. The stability of surface aggregates is important because aggregates below the surface are protected from rapid wetting by those above. Unstable surface aggregates are easily broken down and transported in suspension. This can lead to the formation of crusts that inhibit the movement of water and air into the soil. Maridasan and Chibber obtained a significant negative correlation between aggregate stability and the erosion ratio. Furthermore, aggregate stability influences plant growth indirectly through its relationship to the maintenance of a porosity suitable for air, water, and root movement. Recently, researchers have devoted considerable effort to quantify the relationship between topsoil removal and soil productivity, principally on the basis of data from the North Central Region of the United States. The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the effects of erosion and desurfacing on soil physical and chemical properties. (2) to examine the relationships of aggregate stability (a measure of soil structural stability) with soil properties which result from the erosion and desurfacing of a Beadle Tax adjunct (Fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Haplustoll). (3) to assess and compare the effect of erosion and desurfacing on continuous corn yield for this soil in eastern South Dakota.
