Quantum phase transitions have captured the interest of a large community in condensed-matter and atom physics research. The common feature of these very different material classes lies in the fact that the competition between low-energy scales can be tuned by a nonthermal parameter, such as pressure, magnetic or electric field, and chemical composition for the condensed-matter systems. In heavy-fermion materials, the strong exchange J between f-electrons and conduction electrons can lead to quenching of the f-electron-derived (nearly) localized magnetic moments via the Kondo effect or, if J becomes weaker, to long-range magnetic order via the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction mediated by the conduction electrons. In addition it has been suggested that magnetic order can be suppressed by quantum fluctuations which may be enhanced by geometric frustration. Here we report on the observation of a quantum phase transition in a partially frustrated antiferromagnetic metallic system. In antiferromagnetic CePdAl the magnetic Ce ions form a network of equilateral triangles in the (001) plane, similar to the kagom\'e lattice, with one third of the Ce moments not participating in long-range order. The N\'eel temperature T_N = 2.7 K can be driven to zero upon replacing 14.4% of Pd by Ni. Here the specific heat C exhibits a C/T ~ - log T dependence. Within the Hertz-Millis-Moriya model of quantum criticality, this behavior can be attributed to two-dimensional critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations arising from the decoupling of three-dimensional magnetic order by frustration. The intermediate planes of frustrated moments are a possible candidate for a two-dimensional spin-liquid. The simultaneous presence of magnetic order, geometric frustration, and Kondo effect in this system might thus entail a new route to quantum criticality., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Nanostructured superconductor/ferromagnet heterocontacts are studied in the different transport regimes of point-contact spectroscopy. Direct measurements of the nanocontact size by scanning electron microscopy allow a comparison with theoretical models for contact-size estimates of heterocontacts. Our experimental data give evidence that size estimates yield reasonable values for the point-contact diameter $d$ as long as the samples are carefully characterized with respect to the local electronic parameters., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

We report on investigations of the superconducting energy gap of the A15 superconductor Nb_3Sn by point-contact spectroscopy of breakjunctions. The voltage-dependent differential conductance dI/dV reveals features of a second energy gap besides the energy gap known from previous tunnel measurements with maxima at \Delta_1=3.92 +/- 0.16 meV and \Delta_2=0.85 +/- 0.17 meV as derived from a histogram summarizing the data of more than 60 contacts. These findings are the first spectroscopic evidence that Nb_3Sn belongs to the class of two-band superconductors and they are in line with low-temperature specific-heat measurements on Nb_3Sn.

We develop a minimal model to calculate point-contact spectra between a metallic tip and a superconducting heavy-fermion system. We apply our tunneling model to the heavy fermion CeCoIn5, both in the normal and superconducting state. In point-contact and scanning tunneling spectroscopy many heavy-fermion materials, like CeCoIn5, exhibit an asymmetric differential conductance, dI/dV, combined with a strongly suppressed Andreev reflection signal in the superconducting state. We argue that both features may be explained in terms of a multichannel tunneling model in the presence of localized states near the interface. We find that it is not sufficient to tunnel into two itinerant bands of light and heavy electrons to explain the Fano line shape of the differential conductance. Localized states in the bulk or near the interface are an essential component for quantum interference to occur when an electron tunnels from the metallic tip of the point contact into the heavy-fermion system., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. We present the main features of a home-built scanning tunneling microscope that has been attached to the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator. It allows scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements down to the base temperature of the cryostat, T approx. 30mK, and in applied magnetic fields up to 13T. The topography of both highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and the dichalcogenide superconductor NbSe2 have been imaged with atomic resolution down to T approx. 50mK as determined from a resistance thermometer adjacent to the sample. As a test for a successful operation in magnetic fields, the flux-line lattice of superconducting NbSe2 in low magnetic fields has been studied. The lattice constant of the Abrikosov lattice shows the expected field dependence B^{-0.5} and measurements in the STS mode clearly show the superconductive density of states with Andreev bound states in the vortex core., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Rev. The spin polarization P of the transport current through the interface between superconducting Al and ferromagnetic Fe is determined by means of Andreev reflection at nanostructured point contacts. We observe a systematic decrease of P with decreasing contact resistance. Our data provide evidence for the reduction of P by spin-orbit scattering and thus establish a link between density-of-states and transport spin polarizations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We report on a field-induced change of the electronic band structure of CeBiPt as evidenced by electrical-transport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. Above ~25 T, the charge-carrier concentration increases nearly 30% with a concomitant disappearance of the Shubnikov-de Haas signal. These features are intimately related to the Ce 4f electrons since for the non-4f compound LaBiPt the Fermi surface remains unaffected. We present new specific heat data for Nb3Sn, a well-known technically applied superconductor with a critical temperature T_c ~ 18 K, in the temperature range from 1.2 to 200 K in zero magnetic field, and from 1.5 to 22 K in fields H <= 16 T. The particularly dense and homogeneous polycrystalline sample used for this study is characterized in detail. We determine the bulk upper critical field H_c2(T) from specific heat data, and the Sommerfeld constant Gamma from the entropy S(T). We investigate in detail a low-temperature anomaly already noticed in previous investigations in zero field, and find that this feature can be quantitatively ascribed to the presence of a second superconducting gap 2 Delta_S(0) ~ 0.8 k_B T_c, in addition to the main one 2 Delta_L(0) ~ 4.9 k_B T_c. The signature of this minor gap, which affects 7.5% of the electronic density-of-states, vanishes in fields above ~ 7 T., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We present results from point-contact measurements on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ that show a linear dependence of the excess current as a function of temperature and applied magnetic fields over a surprisingly wide range of the phase diagram. We propose an explanation of this finding in terms of a p-wave triplet-pairing state with coupling to a low-energy fluctuation mode. Within this model we obtain a quantitative description of the temperature dependence of the excess current. We performed point-contact spectroscopy on the binary superconductor MgB$_2$. The differential conductance shows gap-related structures which vary in width and position from contact to contact. The distribution of energy gaps shows a distinct accumulation around 1.7 and 7 meV which is associated with the occurrence of a small and a large energy gap in MgB$_2$. While with increasing $T$ the structure in $dI/dV$ associated with the small gap is present up to $T_C$, in magnetic field it is suppressed well below $B_{c2}$., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Shubnikov--de Haas (SdH) and Hall-effect measurements of CeBiPt and LaBiPt reveal the presence of simple and very small Fermi surfaces with hole-like charge carriers for both semimetals. In the magnetic material, CeBiPt, we observe a strong temperature dependence of the SdH frequency. This highly unusual effect might be connected with an internal exchange field within the material and a strongly spin-dependent scattering of the charge carriers., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The superconducting gap function of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ was investigated by means of quasiparticle reflection and transmission at the normal conductor-superconductor interface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$-Pt point contacts. We found two distinguishly different types of $dV/dI$ vs $V$ spectra either with a double-minimum structure or with a zero-bias conductance anomaly. Both types of spectra are expected in the limit of high and low transparency, respectively, of the interface barrier between a normal metal and a spin-triplet superconductor. Together with the temperature dependence of the spectra this result strongly supports a spin-triplet superconducting order parameter for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published version
