1. Resisting Trans Medicalization: Body Satisfaction and Social Contextual Factors as Predictors of Sexual Experiences among Trans Feminine and Nonbinary Individuals

Abstract

Past research has constructed a medicalized model of trans women’s sexuality, where trans women are believed to be hyposexual and distressed by their bodies pre-transition, and are cured of their sexual dysfunction as a result of gender affirmative medical procedures. The current study engaged a community sample (N = 169) of trans feminine and nonbinary individuals assigned male at birth (TFNB) to investigate predictors of sexual experiences after addressing methodological biases of prior studies, including body satisfaction (using a modified Body Image Scale) and social contextual factors. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to test the hypothesis that after accounting for demographic variables and social contextual aspects (i.e., body satisfaction, social dysphoria, and fetishization), medical transition (i.e., hormone therapy) would not significantly predict five outcomes of sexual experience (i.e., receptive penetration, insertive penetration, importance of sex, sexual pleasure, and sexual intimacy). Across all models, medical transition was not a significant predictor of sexual experiences; however, sexual orientation, age, body satisfaction, and experiences of fetishization were frequent predictors. Results suggest that the sexual experiences of TFNB individuals do not align with the medicalized model and that demographic and contextual factors play an important role in the sexual outcomes for this population.

Abstract

This paper presents our interpretation and understanding of the different backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I data sets. We analyze in detail the several populations observed, which include gammas, alphas, neutrons, thermal sensor events and surface events, and try to combine all data sets to provide a coherent picture of the nature and localisation of the background sources. In light of this interpretation, we draw conclusions regarding the background suppression scheme for the EDELWEISS-II phase.

Abstract

The heat quenching factor Q' (the ratio of the heat signals produced by nuclear and electron recoils of equal energy) of the heat-and-ionization germanium bolometers used by the EDELWEISS collaboration has been measured. It is explained how this factor affects the energy scale and the effective quenching factor observed in calibrations with neutron sources. This effective quenching effect is found to be equal to Q/Q', where Q is the quenching factor of the ionization yield. To measure Q', a precise EDELWEISS measurement of Q/Q' is combined with values of Q obtained from a review of all available measurements of this quantity in tagged neutron beam experiments. The systematic uncertainties associated with this method to evaluate Q' are discussed in detail. For recoil energies between 20 and 100 keV, the resulting heat quenching factor is Q' = 0.91+-0.03+-0.04, where the two errors are the contributions from the Q and Q/Q' measurements, respectively. The present compilation of Q values and evaluation of Q' represent one of the most precise determinations of the absolute energy scale for any detector used in direct searches for dark matter., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

The ZEPLIN collaboration has recently published its first result presenting a maximum sensitivity of $1.1 \times 10^{-6}$ picobarn for a WIMP mass of $\approx$ 60 GeV. The analysis is based on a discrimination method using the different time distribution of scintillation light generated in electron recoil and nuclear recoil interactions. We show that the methodology followed both for the calibration of the ZEPLIN-I detector response and for the estimation of the discrimination power is not reliable enough to claim any background discrimination at the present stage. The ZEPLIN-I sensitivity appears then to be in the order of 10$^{-3}$ picobarn, three orders of magnitude above the claimed 1.1 10$^{-6}$ picobarn., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, minor corrections, two references updated, final version accepted in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The final results of the EDELWEISS-I dark matter search using cryogenic heat-and-ionization Ge detectors are presented. The final data sample corresponds to an increase by a factor five in exposure relative to the previously published results. A recoil energy threshold of 13 keV or better was achieved with three 320g detectors working simultaneously over four months of stable operation. The EDELWEISS collaboration is searching for WIMP dark matter using natural Ge cryogenic detectors. The whole data set of the first phase of the experiment contains a fiducial exposure of 4.8 kg.day on Ge-73, the naturally present (7.8%), high-spin Ge isotope. Abstract

The EDELWEISS experiment has improved its sensitivity for the direct search for WIMP dark matter. In the recoil energy range relevant for WIMP masses below 10 TeV/c2, no nuclear recoils were observed in the fiducial volume of a heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge detector operated in the low-background environment of the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane in the Frejus Tunnel, during an effective exposure of 7.4 kg.days. This result is combined with the previous EDELWEISS data to derive a limit on the cross-section for spin-independent interaction of WIMPs and nucleons as a function of WIMP mass, using standard nuclear physics and astrophysical assumptions. This limit excludes at more than 99.8%CL a WIMP candidate with a mass of 44 GeV/c2 and a cross-section of 5.4 x 10-6 pb, as reported by the DAMA collaboration. The EDELWEISS Dark Matter Search uses low-temperature Ge detectors with heat and ionisation read-out to identify nuclear recoils induced by elastic collisions with WIMPs from the galactic halo. Preliminary results obtained with 320g bolometers are described. Abstract

The discrimination capabilities of a 70 g heat and ionization Ge bolometer are studied. This first prototype has been used by the EDELWEISS Dark Matter experiment, installed in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, for direct detection of WIMPs. Gamma and neutron calibrations demonstrate that this type of detector is able to reject more than 99.6% of the background while retaining 95% of the signal, provided that the background events distribution is not biased towards the surface of the Ge crystal. However, the 1.17 kg.day of data taken in a relatively important radioactive environment show an extra population slightly overlapping the signal. This background is likely due to interactions of low energy photons or electrons near the surface of the crystal, and is somewhat reduced by applying a higher charge-collecting inverse bias voltage (-6 V instead of -2 V) to the Ge diode. Despite this contamination, more than 98% of the background can be rejected while retaining 50% of the signal. This yields a conservative upper limit of 0.7 event.day^{-1}.kg^{-1}.keV^{-1}_{recoil} at 90% confidence level in the 15-45 keV recoil energy interval; the present sensitivity appears to be limited by the fast ambient neutrons. Abstract

Four categories of events have been identified in the EDELWEISS-I dark matter experiment using germanium cryogenic detectors measuring simultaneously charge and heat signals. These categories of events are interpreted as electron and nuclear interactions occurring in the volume of the detector, and electron and nuclear interactions occurring close to the surface of the detectors(10-20 mu-m of the surface). We discuss the hypothesis that low energy surface nuclear recoils,which seem to have been unnoticed by previous WIMP searches, may provide an interpretation of the anomalous events recorded by the UKDMC and Saclay NaI experiments. Abstract

The status of the EDELWEISS experiment (underground dark matter search with heat-ionisation bolometers) is reviewed. Auspicious results achieved with a prototype 70 g Ge heat-ionisation detector under a 2 V reverse bias tension are discussed. Based on gamma and neutron calibrations, a best-case rejection factor, over the 15-45 keV range, of 99.7 % for gammas, with an acceptance of 94 % for neutrons, is presented first. Some operational results of physical interest obtained under poor low radioactivity conditions follow. They include a raw event rate of around 30 events/day/kg/keV over the same energy range, and, after rejection of part of the background, lead to a conservative upper limit on the signal of approximately 1.6 events/day/kg/keV at a 90 % confidence level. Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext, Algorithmic decision-making systems are becoming increasingly prominent in the mobility sector through navigation systems, autonomous driving vehicles, infrastructure management and even through their implementation in customer services. However, the advancements in mobility will only be successful if they are accepted and adopted by the majority of the public. In this paper, we test the perception of public towards algorithmic decision-making systems and their willingness to delegate the task within the mobility sector using a factorial survey approach. Unlike the standard one-factor-at-a-time survey analysis, factorial survey gives us an opportunity to test the perception of trust through various dimensions including personality, task and algorithm related factors, spread over different levels. For example, each participant is given a series of scenarios consisting of a combination of dimensions; with every new scenario in the series, the levels of the dimensions are changed. This allows us to reduce internal biases of the participants by affiliating them to the scenario and thus increasing the internal and external validity of our results. Our results indicate that consumers are less algorithm averse when they have more information about the algorithm (increased transparency), when they have some control over the algorithm, when the algorithm has higher accuracy in performing the task and when it is characterized by the ability to learn. Our findings could act as a starting point for a discussion on ways in which consumer trust in algorithmic decision-making systems can be improved.

Abstract

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is a new project, searching for dark matter, with largely the present groups of the CRESST and EDELWEISS experiments and already a few new groups. The aim is to explore scalar cross sections in the 10(-9) - 10(-10) pico-barn region with a target mass of up to one tonne. A major advantage of EURECA is our planned use of more that just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification). In preparation for this large-scale experiment, RandD for EURECA is provided through the current phases of CRESST and EDELWEISS.

Abstract

EDELWEISS est une expérience de recherche directe de Matière Noire sous forme de Wimps située au LSM. La collaboration a développé des détecteurs cryogéniques en germanium avec une mesure simultanée de l'ionisation et de la chaleur permettant une discrimination événements par événements du fond radioactif gamma des reculs nucléaires attendus pour les Wimps. Nous présentons ici les résultats obtenus avec trois détecteurs de 320g lors de la première phase de l'expérience (EDELWEISS-I) stoppée début 2004. EDELWEISS est à ce jour la seconde expérience la plus sensible au niveau mondiale. La seconde étape, EDELWEISS-II, qui commencera avec 10kg (30kg à termes) de détecteurs est en cours d'installation au LSM, elle doit permettre de gagner 2 ordres de grandeur sur les résultats actuels.

Abstract

The EDELWEISS Dark Matter Search uses low-temperature Ge detectors with heat and ionisation read-out to identify nuclear recoils induced by elastic collisions with WIMPs from the galactic halo. Preliminary results obtained with 320g bolometers are described. After a few weeks of data taking, data accumulated with one of these detectors already allow to reach the upper part of the DAMA region. Abstract

The discrimination capabilities of a 70 g heat and ionization Ge bolometer are studied. This first prototype has been used by the EDELWEISS Dark Matter experiment, installed in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, for direct detection of WIMPs. Gamma and neutron calibrations demonstrate that this type of detector is able to reject more than 99.6% of the background while retaining 95% of the signal, provided that the background events distribution is not biased towards the surface of the Ge crystal. However, the 1.17 kg.day of data taken in a relatively important radioactive environment show an extra population slightly overlapping the signal. This background is likely due to interactions of low energy photons or electrons near the surface of the crystal, and is somewhat reduced by applying a higher charge-collecting inverse bias voltage (-6 V instead of -2 V) to the Ge diode. Despite this contamination, more than 98% of the background can be rejected while retaining 50% of the signal. This yields a conservative upper limit of 0.7 event.day^{-1}.kg^{-1}.keV^{-1}_{recoil} at 90% confidence level in the 15-45 keV recoil energy interval; the present sensitivity appears to be limited by the fast ambient neutrons. The EDELWEISS Dark Matter search uses low-temperature Ge detectors with heat and ionisation read- out to identify nuclear recoils induced by elastic collisions with WIMPs from the galactic halo. Abstract

If we analyse the semantic field of the term “anthropology” we find that the idea covers a very wide range. At the same time however, expressed opinion follows three basic ways. First of all through definitions or lists of characteristics. Or else through the choice of methods used to analyse the human fact. Finally there are the moments where a researcher admits that he can define only the contours of a concept whose core he still ignores. We can say that there exists an “anthropology” in an ethnographic sense or a “biological anthropology”. But every thought also has an “anthropological instant”, that is an explicit or implicit representation of humanity which stands out from interpretations and epistemological passages.; Pas de résumé
