Tourism services are particularly vulnerable to crises because of their hedonic and transitory nature. Notably, external crises have destination-wide negative impacts, which require a collective response usually led by governments for a more effective recovery. Despite the consensus on governments’ role and legitimacy in mitigating crises recovery, there is a dearth of research identifying these tools facilitating intervention and their effectiveness. Thus, the paper aims to explore various government crises mitigation strategies for the tourism industry. This research is based on a mixed-method approach. First, it explores government responses to crises through semi-structured interviews with industry stakeholders. Then, we conduct a survey to target industry experts and measure the effectiveness of government responses and their impact on various key performance indicators during crises. From an academic point of view, the research contributes to an understanding of the efficiency of different government recovery intervention methods, which are overlooked in crisis management theory. Based on managerial contributions, the study provides an effective design of the public tools for more crisis-immune businesses, where governments should prioritise managing external crises by establishing processes, standards, support services, information and communication.

Design activities help students develop their three-dimensional thinking skills and gain engineering and technology literacy. This study investigated whether the spatial abilities and 3D geometrical thinking skills of the students differed according to approaches to learning mathematics before and after engineering design-based mathematics (EDBM) applications. Seventy-five eighth-grade students from a public middle school participated in the study. Data were collected with 3D Geometrical Thinking Test (3DGTT), Spatial Ability Test (SAT) and Approaches to Learning Mathematics Scale (ALMS). In the research, quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control group was used. Engineering design-based mathematics activities were carried out an eight-week period, while the control group received mathematics instruction in line with traditional teaching methods. The results of the study showed that the spatial abilities of the students differed according to the approaches to learning mathematics, whereas the 3D geometrical thinking skills of the students did not differ.

Abstract The foveal-feedback mechanism supports peripheral object recognition by processing information about peripheral objects in foveal retinotopic visual cortex. When a foveal object is asynchronously presented with a peripheral target, peripheral discrimination performance is affected differently depending on the relationship between the foveal and peripheral objects. However, it is not clear whether the delayed foveal input competes for foveal resources with the information processed by foveal-feedback or masks it. In the current study, we tested these hypotheses by measuring the effect of foveal noise at different spatial frequencies on peripheral discrimination of familiar and novel characters. Our results showed that the impairment of foveal-feedback was strongest for low-spatial frequency noise. A control experiment revealed that for spatially overlapping noise, low-spatial frequencies were more effective than medium-spatial frequencies in the periphery, but vice versa in the fovea. This suggests that the delayed foveal input selectively masks foveal-feedback when it is sufficiently similar to the peripheral information. Additionally, this foveal masking was periodic as evidenced by behavioral oscillations at around 5 Hz. Thus, we conclude that foveal-feedback supports peripheral discrimination of familiar and novel objects by periodically processing peripheral object information.

This paper reports, through a longitudinal case inquiry, on the trajectory of one novice teacher's professional identity development after completing his pre-service education to become an English teacher in Turkey. He was assigned to a school in the south-east of the country, which has been experiencing worsening civil conflict between regional militants and the national government, characterised by long-lasting curfews and the destruction of buildings and homes. This study provides insights into the formation of a new teacher's professional identity when working within a conflict region. Written narratives, informal interviews, observation notes, university supervisor observations and a teaching diary were used to examine the developing professional identity. The findings suggest that, in extreme circumstances, individuals may adapt and find ways to mitigate the effects of a challenging community and other disadvantages. Imagined identity can play a powerful role in mediating external difficulties encountered in identity development.

Abstract Softness is an important material property that can be judged directly, by interacting with an object, but also indirectly, by simply looking at an image of a material. The latter is likely possible by filling in relevant multisensory information from prior experiences with soft materials. Such experiences are thought to lead to associations that make up our representations about perceptual softness. Here, we investigate the structure of this representational space when activated by words, and compare it to haptic and visual perceptual spaces that we obtained in earlier work. To this end, we performed an online study where people rated different sensory aspects of soft materials, presented as written names. We compared the results with the previous studies where identical ratings were made on the basis of visual and haptic information. Correlation and Procrustes analyses show that, overall, the representational spaces of verbally presented materials were similar to those obtained from haptic and visual experiments. However, a classifier analysis showed that verbal representations could better be predicted from those obtained from visual than from haptic experiments. In a second study we rule out that these larger discrepancies in representations between verbal and haptic conditions could be due to difficulties in material identification in haptic experiments. We discuss the results with respect to the recent idea that at perceived softness is a multidimensional construct.

AbstractPaclitaxel (trademark Taxol®) is the most effective chemotherapeutic agent against a wide range of cancers. Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) cell culture is a promising and inexpensive strategy for producing paclitaxel and related taxanes. This study evaluated the effect of elicitation and taxane precursor feeding for the enhancement of taxanes in a Turkish hazelnut (C. avellana cv. ‘Kalınkara’) cell suspension culture. Elicitor methyl jasmonate (100, 200 and 300 µmol L−1) and precursor phenylalanine (3μmol, 3 and 6 mmol L−1) were tested in cell suspension cultures. While methyl jasmonate increased the accumulation of taxanes, especially cephalomannine, via induction of the paclitaxel biosynthetic pathway, phenylalanine slightly induced the conversion of 10-deacetylbaccatin III and baccatin III to the end product paclitaxel (0.5349 µg g−1). The results showed that 200 µmol L−1 methyl jasmonate led to significantly greater induction of taxanes than 100 and 300 µmol L−1. The amount of cephalomannine (331.6 µg g−1) in cell suspension cultures elicited by 200 µmol L−1 methyl jasmonate was 8-fold higher than that in the control (41.61 µg g−1), while 10-deacetylbaccatin III (6.174 µg g−1) and baccatin III (3.956 µg g−1) increased almost twice as much as the control. The highest total paclitaxel yield was 5.453 µg g−1 in the same culture conditions. In conclusion, cell culture systems of C. avellana L. cv. ‘Kalınkara’ hazelnut, established for the first time, may become a potential candidate for industrial-level production of cephalomannine and other taxanes with further optimization.

Background Subclinical atherosclerosis may be seen at an early age of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Syndecan 1 (S1) expression is increased in response to proinflammatory cytokine and inflammation. High S1 may reduce carotid atherosclerosis progression. We aimed to investigate the relationship between S1 levels and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with AS. Methods Fifty-eight patients diagnosed with AS and 58 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched controls were included in the study. S1 level and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) were evaluated using appropriate methods. Approximately 6-10% of all breast carcinoma is metastatic at diagnosis, termed de novo metastatic breast carcinoma (dnMBC). Systemic therapy remains the first line of treatment in dnMBC, but there is growing evidence that adjuvant locoregional treatment (LRT) of the primary tumor increases progression-free and overall survival (OS). Although selection bias may exist, real-world data from nearly half a million patients show that patients are undergoing primary tumor removal because of the survival benefit. The main question for the advocates for LRT in this patient population is not whether primary surgery is beneficial in dnMBC patients, but rather who is a good candidate for it. Oligometastatic disease (OMD) is a distinct subset of dnMBC that affects a limited number of organs. A better OS can be achieved with LRT in breast cancer patients, especially in those with OMD, bone only, or favorable subtypes. Though there is currently no consensus among breast care specialists on how to treat dnMBC patients, primary surgery for dnMBC should be taken into consideration for a subset of patients following an extensive multidisciplinary discussion.

In recent years, WebQuests have received a great deal of attention and have been used effectively in teaching-learning process in various courses. In this study, a WebQuest that can be applicable in teaching topological concepts for undergraduate level students was prepared. A number of topological concepts, such as countability, infinity, and sets were incorporated into the WebQuest developed. The WebQuest consists of six stages: introduction, task, process, resources, evaluation and conclusion. After the WebQuest activity was applied, the usability of the WebQuest was evaluated, taking into account students' views. The study was carried out with 29 elementary mathematics pre-service teachers. The data was collected in written form using an interview form that was developed by the researchers. The results indicated that the pre-service teachers have not previously encountered such WebQuest activities however; they display a keen interest in learning about this technology-aided activity and the opportunities to use it in their further lessons.

This paper reports a longitudinal case study exploring the identity construction of a novice English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in Turkey. The study applies sociocultural and post-structural approaches to teacher education and identity formation. It traces the teacher's experiences of becoming and being a teacher drawing upon her reflective teaching narratives, her teaching diary, semi-structured interviews, and the researchers' observation notes. The findings suggest that some features of the induction programmes may negatively affect the novice teachers' construction of a language teacher identity (LTI). Specifically, the negative effect is due to not allowing trainees to experiment or apply their pedagogical perspective in the classroom, or to participate in the classroom on equal levels with their mentor-teachers. The study presents a model that explicates how the LTIs of novice teachers shift from being an imagined to an imposed identity shaped by various constructs: beliefs about teaching and learning, pre-service education, dynamic relations in communities of practice, and contextual factors. The implications for further research are discussed to address LTI construction in EFL contexts.

The synaptonemal complex (SC) is a meiotic interface that assembles between parental chromosomes and is essential for gamete formation. While the dimensions and ultrastructure of the SC are conserved across eukaryotes, its protein components are highly divergent. Recently, an unexpected component of the SC has been described in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans : the Skp1-related proteins SKR-1/2, which are components of the Skp1, Cullin, F-box (SCF) ubiquitin ligase. Here, we find that the role of SKR-1 in the SC is conserved in Pristionchus pacificus. The P. pacificus Skp1 ortholog, Ppa-SKR-1 , colocalizes with other SC proteins throughout meiotic prophase, where it occupies the middle of the SC. Like in C. elegans , the dimerization interface of Ppa-SKR-1 is required for its SC function. A dimerization mutant, ppa-skr-1F105E , fails to assemble SC and produces almost no progeny. Interestingly, the evolutionary trajectory of SKR-1 contrasts with other SC proteins. Unlike most SC proteins, SKR-1 is highly conserved in nematodes. Our results suggest that the structural role of SKR-1 in the SC has been conserved since the common ancestor of C. elegans and P. pacificus , and that rapidly evolving SC proteins have maintained the ability to interact with SKR-1 for at least 100 million years. Nonylphenol (NP) is an organic pollutant and endocrine disruptor chemical that has harmful effects on the environment and living organisms. This study looked at whether kidney tissues subjected to increasing doses of nonylphenol generated alterations in histopathologic, pro-inflammatory, and autophagic markers. Fifty rats were divided into five groups of ten each: group I: healthy group, II: control (corn oil), group III: 25 μl/kg NP, group IV: 50 μl/kg NP, group V: 75 μl/kg NP. The kidney tissue samples were obtained for histopathological, immunohistochemical, and biochemical analyses. The histological deteriorations observed in all NP groups included tubular epithelial cell degeneration, inflammation areas, and hemorrhage. The immunohistochemical investigations showed that NP significantly elevated the autophagy markers (Beclin-1, LC3A/B, p62), pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), HIF-1α, and eNOS in group III, IV and V compared with group I and II. The biochemical analysis also revealed that pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) increased in correlation with the NP doses, but only IL-1β reached statistical significance in NP treated rats kidney tissue. The biochemical findings have been confirmed by the histological studies. The damage to renal tissue caused by NP exposure may worsen it by increasing inflammatory and autophagic markers. The aim of this study is to employ the Pirie-Kieren model so as to examine the understandings relating to the domain of multivariable functions held by primary school mathematics preservice teachers. The data obtained was categorized according to Pirie-Kieren model and demonstrated visually in tables and bar charts. The study group consisted of forty sophomore primary school mathematics preservice teachers during the process of their education at a state university in Turkey. The data were collected via a test consisting of open-ended questions prepared by the researchers of the study. The findings demonstrated that preservice teachers submitted answers predominantly at the "property noticing" stage as defined by the Pirie-Kieren model. In addition, answers by participants were also encountered within the "image making" and "image having" stages of the model.

The spatial ability is defined as the combination of some abilities such as imagining the movements of objects, mental rotation, and spatial transformations. Students' spatial abilities can be enhanced through specific education programs. This study investigated the effects of engineering design-based instruction on spatial abilities of 8th grade students. The study was conducted with a total of 75 students: two experimental groups (n = 35) and two control groups (n = 40). Three different engineering design modules were developed. Using a mixed method approach, qualitative data were analysed to identify students' engineering design processes. In the quantitative part of the study, a quasi-experiment was used to examine the effects of engineering design-based mathematical activities on spatial abilities of students. Results revealed that engineering design-based activities positively affect the development of students' spatial abilities. In addition, findings related to the qualitative data on students' design processes were presented; and suggestions for further research were introduced.

Background: Emergency rooms (ERs) are usually crowded with friends and relatives (F&Rs) of the patients. This experience may result in changes in smoking behaviors and create opportunities for smoking cessation interventions. The study aims to investigate these changes and offers a new frontier in the fight against smoking.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the ERs of two universities in different cities. A questionnaire consisting of 18 questions was applied to F&Rs of the emergency patients. Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi program.Findings: A total of 603 respondents were included in the study. Of them, 71.3% were first-degree relatives, 51.7% waited 5 or more times in ER before, and 68.6% spent 0-2 hours in a day around the ER. Upon witnessing patients in the ERs, 53.4% of the F&Rs had the idea of quitting smoking and 42.9% wanted to have smoking cessation therapy during their wait in the hospital. While 76.1% of the participants were not using different brands of cigarettes when offered in normal life, this rate was lower around the ERs (64.6%) (P < 0.001). Participants smoked 0.82 ± 0.34 cigarette per hour in normal life excluding sleeping time; this number raised almost 6 folds during the wait (4.85 ± 2.11) (P < 0.001).Conclusion: F&Rs smoked more during waiting around ERs. However, they also expressed desire to quit smoking and receive smoking cessation intervention during the wait. Providing smoking cessation counseling to F&Rs in the ER may be a valuable intervention.

Abstract Background Investigating the effects of 405-nm, 532-nm, 650-nm, and 950-nm wavelengths of LLLTs (low-level laser therapies) on the orthodontic tooth movement in rats by using histological and immunohistochemical methods. Forty-five Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: control group (positive control: the left maxillary 1st molar side; negative control: the right maxillary 1st molar side), 405 nm LLLT group (Realpoo), 532 nm LLLT group (Realpoo), 650 nm LLLT group (Realpoo), and 940 nm LLLT group (Biolase). The left maxillary 1st molar teeth of all rats were applied mesially 50-g force. Starting from the 1st day, 48 h intervals, LLLT was applied in continuous wave mode and in contact with the tissue. The application area was approximately 1 cm2. The lasers were performed for 3 min on each surface (buccal, palatal, mesial), totally 9 min (total dose 54 J/cm2). The amount of the molar mesialization, the bone area between the roots, PDL (periodontal ligament) measurements, TRAP (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), and ALP (alkaline phosphatase) immunoreactivity intensity were calculated. Results The amount of the molar mesialization was significantly higher in the 650 nm LLLT group (mean 0.878 ± 0.201 mm; 95% CI (confidence interval) 0.724 and 1.032) than in the groups of positive control (mean 0.467 ± 0.357 mm; 95% CI 0.192 and 0.741) and 405 nm LLLT (mean 0.644 ± 0.261 mm; 95% CI 0.443 and 0.845) (p < 0.001). There were significant differences in the PDL-mesial (p = 0.042) and PDL-distal (p = 0.007) regions between the groups. The immunoreactivity intensity for TRAP-mesial was significantly higher in the positive control group (mean 109,420.33 ± 8769.17; 95% CI 100,217.65 and 118,623.02) than in the 405 nm (mean 91,678.83 ± 7313.39; 95% CI 84,003.9 and 99,353.77) and the 650 nm LLLT (mean 87,169.17 ± 4934.65; 95% CI 81,990.56 and 92,347.77) groups (p = 0.002). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups on immunoreactivity intensity with ALP staining. Conclusions The results of this study show that LLLT with 650-nm wavelength increases orthodontic tooth movement more than 405-nm, 532-nm, and 940-nm LLLTs. The 940-nm and 650-nm LLLTs also increase the bone area between the roots by more than 405-nm and 532-nm wavelengths.

In recent years, the topic of integrating history to mathematics lessons in teaching-learning processes has been frequently discussed among researchers. The main aim of this study is to present an example activity which enriched with history of mathematics and to take the views of students about teaching course in this way. In addition, to create awareness about the developmental stages of mathematics up to now is an implicit purpose. This research is a multiple case study. It was studied with twenty one students who continued eighth grade class in a private primary school. Worksheets containing two algorithms about calculating the square roots of numbers which were used in history were given to each student. In addition, after students reached the solution, they compared their results with results which they obtained from the calculator. Thus, they also saw that the calculator's operating system was similar to algorithms they used. Students' opinions about the integration of the history of mathematics to lessons were collected through an interview form. At the end of the activity, students stated that the chosen activities from the history of mathematics had attracted their interests. Also, they found an opportunity to compare different methods.
