- Abstract
How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.

Partner specificity is a well‐documented phenomenon in biotic interactions, yet the factors that determine specificity in plant‐fungal associations remain largely unknown. By utilizing composite soil samples, we identified the predictors that drive partner specificity in both plants and fungi, with a particular focus on ectomycorrhizal associations. Fungal guilds exhibited significant differences in overall partner preference and avoidance, richness, and specificity to specific tree genera. The highest level of specificity was observed in root endophytic and ectomycorrhizal associations, while the lowest was found in arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. The majority of ectomycorrhizal fungal species showed a preference for one of their partner trees, primarily at the plant genus level. Specialist ectomycorrhizal fungi were dominant in belowground communities in terms of species richness and relative abundance. Moreover, all tree genera (and occasionally species) demonstrated a preference for certain fungal groups. Partner specificity was not related to the rarity of fungi or plants or environmental conditions, except for soil pH. Depending on the partner tree genus, specific fungi became more prevalent and relatively more abundant with increasing stand age, tree dominance, and soil pH conditions optimal for the partner tree genus. The richness of partner tree species and increased evenness of ectomycorrhizal fungi in multi‐host communities enhanced the species richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi. However, it was primarily the partner‐generalist fungi that contributed to the high diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi in mixed forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

- Abstract
How the multiple facets of soil fungal diversity vary worldwide remains virtually unknown, hindering the management of this essential species-rich group. By sequencing high-resolution DNA markers in over 4000 topsoil samples from natural and human-altered ecosystems across all continents, we illustrate the distributions and drivers of different levels of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of fungi and their ecological groups. We show the impact of precipitation and temperature interactions on local fungal species richness (alpha diversity) across different climates. Our findings reveal how temperature drives fungal compositional turnover (beta diversity) and phylogenetic diversity, linking them with regional species richness (gamma diversity). We integrate fungi into the principles of global biodiversity distribution and present detailed maps for biodiversity conservation and modeling of global ecological processes.

The data are provided in two formats: TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) and GeoPackage formats, which are commonly used to store geospatially-referenced data. Alpha Diversity: `Alpha_S_*` files: These files contain estimates of alpha diversity (local species diversity) for each grid cell of a raster file. `Alpha_AOA_*` files: These files outline the 'Area of Applicability' for the alpha diversity estimates. `Alpha_Uncertainty_*` files: These files contain data related to the uncertainty of the alpha diversity predictions. Uncertainty here represents the range or degree of error associated with the diversity estimates. `Alpha_Hotspots_and_ProtectedAreas` contains information on fungal diversity hotspots and their area under protection (based on IUCN classification). Väitekirja elektrooniline versioon ei sisalda publikatsioone, Baktereid võib leida kõikvõimalikest keskkondadest nii vabalt elavate organismidena kui ka päristuumsete organismide sümbiontide ja haigustekitajatena. Vastastikku kasulike suhete korral saavad bakterid peremehelt süsinikuühendeid ja elupaika, pakkudes peremehele vastutasuks mitmesuguseid hüvesid. Hiljutised uuringud on näidanud, et seente viljakehad on elupaigaks mitmekesistele bakterikooslustele, mis võivad mõjutada oma peremehe kasvu, toota seenele vajalikke vitamiine ning soodustada eoste idanemist. Siiski on meie teadmised seente bakterikoosluste koosseisust ja funktsioonidest praegu veel küllaltki piiratud. Käesoleva doktoritöö eesmärgiks oli kirjeldada bakterikoosluste mitmekesisust ja nende varieeruvuse mustreid seente viljakehade eri arengustaadiumide, aga ka peremehe taksonite ja geograafiliste piirkondade lõikes. Lisaks analüüsiti bakterigenoomides kajastuvaid tunnuseid, mis võiksid olla määravad seente asustamiseks vajalike kohtastumiste kujunemisel. Saadud töö tulemused näitasid, et bakterid, kes võivad kasvu soodustada, on viljakehas arvukad kogu selle arengutsükli vältel, samas kui viljakeha vananedes kasvab seenele kahjulike ja surnud orgaanikast toituvate bakterite osakaal. Selgus, et bakterite mitmekesisus ja koosluste koosseis varieerub sõltuvalt peremeesseene evolutsioonilisest päritolust, samas kui kliima ja mulla omaduste osa selles ei ole oluline. Bakterite genoomide analüüs näitas, et neil on mitmesuguseid ensüüme, mis võimaldavad saada peremeesseene biomassist energiat, aidates samas peremehel oma keskkonnast toitaineid hankida. Seentes elavate bakterite funktsiooni ja koosluse struktuuri selgitamine aitab kaasa bakterite ja seente vaheliste keerukate suhete mõistmisele erinevates ökosüsteemides., Bacteria are ubiquitous in various habitats either as free-living organisms or as symbionts and pathogens of eukaryotic hosts. In case of mutually beneficial interactions, bacteria obtain carbon and shelter from the host while providing various benefits for the host. Research on such interactions, has contributed to improving human health as well as to enhancing plant growth, stress tolerance and resistance to pathogens. While fungi represent one of the three major kingdoms of eukaryotes performing crucial ecological functions as decomposers and symbionts, their microbiomes have been much less studied. Although fungi draw the attention of humans mainly as pathogenic microorganisms, many also produce conspicuous fruiting bodies that humans consume. Recent studies have revealed that fungal fruiting bodies harbor diverse bacterial communities that perform various functions including host growth promotion, spore dissemination, and germination. However, our understanding of these communities and their functioning remains limited. The aim of the current PhD thesis was to study the diversity and assembly mechanisms of bacterial communities during fruiting body growth, as well as the distribution patterns of fungus-inhabiting bacteria across host taxa and geographical regions. In addition, genomic features important for bacterial adaptation to fungal habitats were analyzed. The results indicate that bacteria potentially promoting fruiting body growth remain abundant throughout the growth cycle but are replaced by pathogenic and saprotrophic bacteria in mature fruiting bodies. It was also found that the diversity and composition of bacterial communities varies depending on the phylogenetic relationships of host fungi, while climate and soil properties are not significant in this respect. Furthermore, results presented in this thesis point to the complementary role of bacteria for the functioning of the fungal holobiont, as has been shown for plants and animals. - Abstract
Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here we used high-resolution sequencing to assess endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

- Abstract
Mushroom-forming fungi are important sources of food and medicine in many regions of the world, and their development and health are known to depend on various microbes. Recent studies have examined the structure of mushroom-inhabiting bacterial (MIB) communities and their association with local environmental variables, but global-scale diversity and determinants of these communities remain poorly understood. Here we examined the MIB global diversity and community composition in relation to climate, soil and host factors. We found a core global mushroom microbiome, accounting for 30% of sequence reads, while comprising a few bacterial genera such as Halomonas, Serratia, Bacillus, Cutibacterium, Bradyrhizobium and Burkholderia. Our analysis further revealed an important role of host phylogeny in shaping the communities of MIB, whereas the effects of climate and soil factors remained negligible. The results suggest that the communities of MIB and free-living bacteria are structured by contrasting community assembly processes and that fungal-bacterial interactions are an important determinant of MIB community structure.

- Abstract
Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

TWo new species of Trichoglossum are described from south Mexico based on morphological and molecular evidence. Trichoglossum caespitosum is characterized by the caespitose ascomata, rough and coiled paraphyses and the ascospores with 9-11 septa. Trichoglossum tropicale is characterized by the capitate ascomata, clavate and straight paraphyses and the ascospores with 10-12 septa. Both species grow in the tropical forests of the Yucatán peninsula. Here we provide descriptions and photographs for these species, together with a phylogenetic analyses based on the DNA sequences of nuc rDNA (ITS region and 28S gene) and a comparative table for the species known for America. - Abstract
The cryptic lifestyle of most fungi necessitates molecular identification of the guild in environmental studies. Over the past decades, rapid development and affordability of molecular tools have tremendously improved insights of the fungal diversity in all ecosystems and habitats. Yet, in spite of the progress of molecular methods, knowledge about functional properties of the fungal taxa is vague and interpretation of environmental studies in an ecologically meaningful manner remains challenging. In order to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of environmental studies we introduce a user friendly traits and character database FungalTraits operating at genus and species hypothesis levels. Combining the information from previous efforts such as FUNGuild and FunFun together with involvement of expert knowledge, we reannotated 10,210 and 151 fungal and Stramenopila genera, respectively. This resulted in a stand-alone spreadsheet dataset covering 17 lifestyle related traits of fungal and Stramenopila genera, designed for rapid functional assignments of environmental studies. In order to assign the trait states to fungal species hypotheses, the scientific community of experts manually categorised and assigned available trait information to 697,413 fungal ITS sequences. On the basis of those sequences we were able to summarise trait and host information into 92,623 fungal species hypotheses at 1% dissimilarity threshold.

15 páginas.- 6 figuras.- 93 referencias, Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general.
