Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a significant challenge to healthcare systems and economics worldwide in the 21st century. It is characterised by progressive memory dysfunction and is a leading cause of dementia. Literature suggests that the involvement of neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the progression of neuropathological changes in AD. Currently, available drugs for AD management primarily focus on symptomatic treatment. There is a need for safe adjunctive agents with a specific target and explicit mechanism of action. Swietenia macrophylla (SM) has been traditionally used as a food source and for pain relief in folk medicine. Recent studies have highlighted the neuroprotective properties of SM, including its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-acetylcholinesterase, and anti-mitochondrial dysfunction effects. In light of these considerations, this review aims to explore the potential neuroprotective role of SM by examining the existing literature to elucidate its potential mechanisms of action in addressing the complex challenges presented by AD.

40. Exploring the Use of Virtual Laboratory Simulations Before, During, and Post COVID-19 Recovery Phase: An Animal Biotechnology Case Study

Abstract

This study presents an evaluation of integrating virtual laboratory simulations in assessment design of a biotechnology course at Taylor's University in Malaysia before, during and post-COVID recovery phases. The purpose was to investigate how virtual laboratory simulations were integrated as part of the assessments of a practical-embedded course--the aim being to evaluate students' acceptance and perception of using virtual simulation. A total of 46 students, across three different study cohorts (August 2019, March 2020, and August 2020) were evaluated different educational aspects of using virtual laboratory cases in a 4-week course within Animal Biotechnology. Overall, students regarded virtual laboratory simulation useful as part of their learning, and there is a significant increase in the level of acceptance before, during and post-COVID recovery phases. The study showed that across the different study cohorts, students perceived their confidence level in laboratory skills have been enhanced and that they can apply the skills in real-life situation. Interestingly, students (March and August 2020 cohort) who have not been exposed to the related laboratory session still perceived that the simulated activity provides clear explanation and realistic experience. Furthermore, it had been highlighted across the study cohorts that the quiz questions helped to enhance their understanding on the underlying principles of the laboratory techniques. The overall conclusion of this study was that structured simulation-based activities which provide clear instructions and explanation would support significant improvements in students learning.

Abstract

Aloe vera is commonly used as traditional medicine for cutaneous wound healing. Nonetheless, the wound healing mechanisms of Aloe vera remain unclear. This review aims to provide insight into the molecular mechanisms of Aloe vera in promoting cutaneous wound healing, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms that stimulate cell proliferation and migration. Aloe vera has been shown to upregulate growth factors such as keratinocyte growth factor-1 (KGF-1), transforming growth factor- β (TGF- β), cyclin D1, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblastic growth factor (bFGF), and microfibril-associated glycoprotein 4 (MFAP4), as well as collagen, fibrillin, elastin, α -smooth muscle actin (α -SMA), integrins, and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1, also known as CD31), while downregulating the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In addition, Aloe vera was also found to upregulate PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathways, as well as the TGF- β signalling pathway via Smad proteins. Furthermore, molecular docking studies revealed that certain chemical constituents of Aloe vera bind to some of the forementioned growth factors or signalling molecules. With regards to current applications, although human clinical trials have reported positive results from using Aloe vera in healing open wounds and burns and alleviating some inflammatory skin diseases, the current commercial uses of Aloe vera remain largely focused on cosmetic products.
