Since the Viking Program, quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) instruments have been used to explore a wide survey of planetary targets in our solar system, including (from the inner to outer reaches): Venus (Pioneer); our moon (LADEE); Mars (Viking, Phoenix, and Mars Science Laboratory); and, Saturns largest moon Titan (Cassini-Huygens). More recently, however, ion trap mass spectrometer (ITMS) instruments have found a niche as smaller, versatile alternatives to traditional quadrupole mass analyzers, capable of in situ characterization of planetary environments and the search for organic matter. For example, whereas typical QMS systems are limited to a mass range up to 500 Da and normally require multiple RF frequencies and pressures of less than 10(exp -6) mbar for optimal operation, ITMS instruments commonly reach upwards of 1000 Da or more on a single RF frequency, and function in higher pressure environments up to 10(exp -3) mbar.

The Philae Lander of ESA’s Rosetta Mission landed succcessfully on, but immediately rebounded from, the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Thereafter the COmetary SAmpling and Composition Experiment (COSAC), a pyrolysis Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer, on board Philae made, while in resumed flight, made unique mass spectral measurements of the organic species thrown upward due to the impact. We here will discuss the several organic species identified in this COSAC data [1]. Further we will extrapolate the identifications to develop a perspective of a conjectural complex organic chemistry occuring on the nucleus. The extrapolation will attempt to fill the void between the unprecedented COSAC identifications on one end with the historical macromolecular chemistry models of the nucleus [2]. Our endeavour is to rationalize the physico-chemical processes that lead to the synthesis of non-volatile macromolecular organic material on the nucleus surface, assess their background in historical literature [3], and elucidate how the species detected by COSAC are minor constructs of this complex material.

In this paper data recorded by the Cometary Sampling and Composition experiment (COSAC), a pyrolysis - gas-chromatograph - mass-spectrometer (pyr GC-MS) aboard Philae are presented. After landing in a somewhat non-nominal way on the cometary nucleus of 67/P, Philae carried out its First Science Sequence. As part of these activities COSAC acquired seven mass-spectra in sniffing mode, the first while still flying, the other at the final landing site. In addition, since drilling of a soil sample was attempted at the final site, a combined GC-MS measurement was performed on the sample transferred to COSAC. In the MS measurement made after the first touch- down a wide range of mass peaks was observed. These are ascribed to a variety of organic compounds, quite a few of them oxygen and nitrogen bearing species. However, no sulfur compounds were detected. The following six MS sniffings showed peaks of decreasing signal intensity mostly, but not completely, following the temperature drop pertaining aboard Philae. The results of the GC-MS measurement were, if at all, only marginally different from an empty run performed by COSAC in April 2014 when Rosetta was still far from the comet. The implications of this result namely: (1) was a sample delivered at all? (2) what do the small signals mean?) will each be discussed.

International audience; The Mars Organic Molecule Ana- lyzer (MOMA) is a dual ion source linear ion trap mass spectrometer that was designed for the 2018 joint ESA-Roscosmos mission to Mars. The main scientific aim of the mission is to search for signs of extant or extinct life in the near subsurface of Mars by acquiring samples from as deep as 2 m below the surface. MOMA will be a key analytical tool in providing chemical (molecular and chiral) information from the solid samples, with particular focus on the characteri- zation of organic content. The MOMA instrument, itself, is a joint venture for NASA and ESA to develop a mass spectrometer capable of analyzing samples from pyrolysis/chemical derivatization gas chromatog- raphy (GC) as well as ambient pressure laser desorp- tion ionization (LDI). The combination of the two analytical techniques allows for the chemical charac- terization of a broad range of compounds, including volatile and non-volatile species. Generally, MOMA can provide information on elemental and molecular makeup, polarity, chirality and isotopic patterns of analyte species. Here we report on the current perfor- mance of the MOMA prototype instruments, specifi- cally the demonstration of the gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS) mode of operation.

International audience; The goals of the joint ESA-Roscosmos Exo-Mars-2018 rover mission is to search for “signsof life” molecules (large, non-volatile organ-ic or biological molecules that suggest existing or prior biosynthetic activity) on the Martian surface and near subsurface and to distinguish between the endogenous and exogenous sources of Martian organics.The Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) aboard the ExoMars rover will be a key analytical tool in providing chemical (molecular) information from the solid samples, with particular focus on the charac-terization of organic content. Central to MOMA in-strumentation is a gas chromatograph-mass spectrome-ter (GC-MS) which provides the unique ability to characterize a broad range of compounds allowing chemical analyses of volatile and non-volatile species.Both instruments have been tested separately first and have been coupled in order to test the efficiency of the future MOMA GC-MS instrument.

Going to Mars The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft containing the Curiosity rover, was launched from Earth in November 2011 and arrived at Gale crater on Mars in August 2012. Zeitlin et al. (p. 1080 ) report measurements of the energetic particle radiation environment inside the spacecraft during its cruise to Mars, confirming the hazard likely to be posed by this radiation to astronauts on a future potential trip to Mars. Williams et al. (p. 1068 , see the Perspective by Jerolmack ) report the detection of sedimentary conglomerates (pebbles mixed with sand and turned to rock) at Gale crater. The rounding of the rocks suggests abrasion of the pebbles as they were transported by flowing water several kilometers or more from their source.

Mars' Atmosphere from Curiosity The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in August last year is designed to study the chemical and isotopic composition of the martian atmosphere. Mahaffy et al. (p. 263 ) present volume-mixing ratios of Mars' five major atmospheric constituents (CO 2 , Ar, N 2 , O 2 , and CO) and isotope measurements of 40 Ar/ 36 Ar and C and O in CO 2 , based on data from one of SAM's instruments, obtained between 31 August and 21 November 2012. Webster et al. (p. 260 ) used data from another of SAM's instruments obtained around the same period to determine isotope ratios of H, C, and O in atmospheric CO 2 and H 2 O. Agreement between the isotopic ratios measured by SAM with those of martian meteorites, measured in laboratories on Earth, confirms the origin of these meteorites and implies that the current atmospheric reservoirs of CO 2 and H 2 O were largely established after the period of early atmospheric loss some 4 billion years ago.

International audience; "Jake_M," the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).

Samples from the Rocknest aeolian deposit were heated to ~835°C under helium flow and evolved gases analyzed by Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite. H 2 O, SO 2 , CO 2 , and O 2 were the major gases released. Water abundance (1.5 to 3 weight percent) and release temperature suggest that H 2 O is bound within an amorphous component of the sample. Decomposition of fine-grained Fe or Mg carbonate is the likely source of much of the evolved CO 2 . Evolved O 2 is coincident with the release of Cl, suggesting that oxygen is produced from thermal decomposition of an oxychloride compound. Elevated δD values are consistent with recent atmospheric exchange. Carbon isotopes indicate multiple carbon sources in the fines. Several simple organic compounds were detected, but they are not definitively martian in origin.

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity scooped samples of soil from the Rocknest aeolian bedform in Gale crater. Analysis of the soil with the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) x-ray diffraction (XRD) instrument revealed plagioclase (~An57), forsteritic olivine (~Fo62), augite, and pigeonite, with minor K-feldspar, magnetite, quartz, anhydrite, hematite, and ilmenite. The minor phases are present at, or near, detection limits. The soil also contains 27 ± 14 weight percent x-ray amorphous material, likely containing multiple Fe 3+ - and volatile-bearing phases, including possibly a substance resembling hisingerite. The crystalline component is similar to the normative mineralogy of certain basaltic rocks from Gusev crater on Mars and of martian basaltic meteorites. The amorphous component is similar to that found on Earth in places such as soils on the Mauna Kea volcano, Hawaii.

The group considered collaborative science opportunities both without change to either proposed rover, as well as with some change allowed. Planning focused on analysis of shared and separate objectives, with concurrence on two high priority shared objectives that could form the basis of highly significant collaborative exploration activity. The first shared objective relates to sending the proposed rovers to a site interpreted to contain evidence of past environments with high habitability potential, and with high preservation potential for physical and chemical biosignatures where they would evaluate paleoenvironmental conditions, assess the potential for preservation of biotic and/or prebiotic signatures, and search for possible evidence of past life and prebiotic chemistry. The second shared objective relates to the collection, documentation, and suitable packaging of a set of samples by the rovers that would be sufficient to achieve the scientific objectives of a possible future sample return mission. Achieving cooperative science with the two proposed rovers implies certain compromises that might include less time available for pursuing each rover’s independent objectives, implementation of some hardware modifications, and the need to share a landing site that may not be optimized for either rover. Sharing a landing site has multiple implications, including accepting a common latitude restriction, accepting the geological attributes of the common landing site, and creation of a potential telecommunications bottleneck. Moreover, ensuring a safe landing with the sky crane and pallet system envisioned for the mission would likely result in landing terrain engineering requirements more constraining than those for MSL. Additional possible constraints on the distances the rovers could traverse suggest primary science targets should be within the landing ellipse. Hence, hazard avoidance capability might be necessary to allow for consideration of scientifically compelling sites with a mixture of safe and unsafe terrain.

International audience; In the frame of the future MOMA experiment of the European Exomars 2013 space mission aimed at finding traces of life, our work deals with the optimization of the derivatization parameters of chiral organic molecules such as amino acids using N,N- Dimethylformamide Dimethylacetal (DMF-DMA) as derivatizing agent. In order to optimize the chiral derivatization, within space operating conditions, several parameters such as temperature (90 to 170C) and reaction time (30 s to 60 min) have been studied using a Chirasil-Dex capillary column for the enantiomeric separation. This technique performed in one-step reaction is space compatible and allows to identify 18 out the 20 proteogenic amino acids and to separate enantiomerically 11 out of the 19 ones (glycine being non-chiral) with a single column using -cyclodextrin stationary phase. In a second step, the racemization rate, which varies according to the nature of the amino acid, has been studied under the optimal conditions of derivatization. Racemization is all the more important since temperature is the key factor of this phenomenon. The higher the temperature, the faster will the racemization be. Thus, for example when only D-form of threonine is injected, the D-enantiomeric excess drops from 100 to 28 when the temperature used for the derivatisation is increased from 70 to 150C, this drop being respectively 72 and 60 at 90 and 120C. The optimal heating time of the derivatization reaction has been also determined allowing high derivatization efficiency and low rate of racemization of the enantiomers and destruction of the amino acids. Quantitative studies were also carried out: linearity studies and the measurement of the limit of detection (LOD) show that the proposed method is suitable for a quantitative determination of enantiomers of several amino acids within a limit of detection (lower than the ppb level) compatible with that found in Martian meteorites.

The NEOs are representative of the population of asteroids and dead comets thought to be similar to the ancient planetesimal swarms that accreted to form the planets. The chemical investigation of NEOs having primitive characteristics is thus essential in the understanding the planet formation and evolution. They carry records of the solar system's birth/early phases and the geological evolution of small bodies in the inter-planetary regions. Moreover, collisions of NEOs with Earth represent a serious hazard to life. For all these reasons the exploration and characterization of these objects are particularly interesting and urgent. NEOs are interesting and highly accessible targets for scientific research and robotic exploration. Within this framework, a mission including an orbiter and a lander to the primitive double object (1996 FG3) is under study, in collaboration with different European countries (France, Italy, Germany and United Kingdom) and related Space Agencies. The principal objective is to characterize the chemical-physical surface properties by in-situ analysis and to define its internal structure by radar tomographer. This type of mission, studied to fit within limited resources and cost, appears clearly to have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of primitive materials and to provide us the information needed to develop strategies to protect the Earth from impactors. The current phase 0 activities are to be ended in spring 2006 and a larger cooperation is viewed to enter in the next phases.

- Abstract
The Triple F (Fresh From the Fridge) mission, a Comet Nucleus Sample Return, has been proposed to ESA's Cosmic Vision program. A sample return from a comet enables us to reach the ultimate goal of cometary research. Since comets are the least processed bodies in the solar system, the proposal goes far beyond cometary science topics (like the explanation of cometary activity) and delivers invaluable information about the formation of the solar system and the interstellar molecular cloud from which it formed. The proposed mission would extract three sample cores of the upper 50 cm from three locations on a cometary nucleus and return them cooled to Earth for analysis in the laboratory. The simple mission concept with a touch-and-go sampling by a single spacecraft was proposed as an M-class mission in collaboration with the Russian space agency ROSCOSMOS.
