The recent claim of superconductivity above room temperature in Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O with 0.9 < $x$ < 1 (referred to as LK-99) has sparked considerable interest. To minimize the influence of structural defects and impurity phases on the physical properties, we have synthesized phase-pure single crystals with $x \sim 1$. We find that the crystals are highly insulating and optically transparent. X-ray analysis reveals an uneven distribution of the substituted Cu throughout the sample. Temperature ($T$) dependent magnetization measurements for $ 2 \leq T \leq 800$ K reveal the diamagnetic response characteristic of a non-magnetic insulator, as well as a small ferromagnetic component, possibly originating from frustrated exchange interactions in Cu-rich clusters in the Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O structure. No anomalies indicative of phase transitions are observed. We therefore rule out the presence of superconductivity in Pb$_{9}$Cu(PO$_4$)$_6$O crystals, and provide some considerations on the origin of anomalies previously reported in experiments on polycrystalline specimen.

Depth-sensitive magnetic, structural and chemical characterization is important in the understanding and optimization of novel physical phenomena emerging at interfaces of transition metal oxide heterostructures. In a simultaneous approach we have used polarized neutron and resonant X-ray reflectometry to determine the magnetic profile across atomically sharp interfaces of ferromagnetic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 / multiferroic BiFeO3 bi-layers with sub-nanometer resolution. In particular, the X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements at the Fe and Mn resonance edges allowed us to determine the element specific depth profile of the ferromagnetic moments in both the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and BiFeO3 layers. Our measurements indicate a magnetically diluted interface layer within the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer, in contrast to previous observations on inversely deposited layers. Additional resonant X-ray reflection measurements indicate a region of an altered Mn- and O-content at the interface, with a thickness matching that of the magnetic diluted layer, as origin of the reduction of the magnetic moment., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material included

A combined analysis of x-ray absorption and resonant reflectivity data was used to obtain the orbital polarization profiles of superlattices composed of four-unit-cell-thick layers of metallic LaNiO3 and layers of insulating RXO3 (R=La, Gd, Dy and X=Al, Ga, Sc), grown on substrates that impose either compressive or tensile strain. This superlattice geometry allowed us to partly separate the influence of epitaxial strain from interfacial effects controlled by the chemical composition of the insulating blocking layers. Our quantitative analysis reveal orbital polarizations up to 25%. We further show that strain is the most effective control parameter, whereas the influence of the chemical composition of the blocking layers is comparatively small., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Using neutron reflectometry and resonant x-ray techniques we studied the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) in superlattices composed of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M) La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) or ferromagnetic-insulating (FM-I) LaMnO$_{3+\delta}$ (LMO). We find that the MPE strongly depends on the electronic state of the manganite layers, being pronounced for the FM-M LCMO and almost absent for FM-I LMO. The occupation of d-orbitals controls the magnitude and anisotropy of the inter-atomic electron transfer in transition metal oxides and hence exerts a key influence on their chemical bonding and physical properties. Atomic-scale modulations of the orbital occupation at surfaces and interfaces are believed to be responsible for massive variations of the magnetic and transport properties, but could thus far not be probed in a quantitative manner. Here we show that it is possible to derive quantitative, spatially resolved orbital polarization profiles from soft x-ray reflectivity data, without resorting to model calculations. We demonstrate that the method is sensitive enough to resolve differences of 3 % in the occupation of Ni e_g orbitals in adjacent atomic layers of a LaNiO3-LaAlO3 superlattice, in good agreement with ab-initio electronic-structure calculations. The possibility to quantitatively correlate theory and experiment on the atomic scale opens up many new perspectives for orbital physics in d-electron materials.

Epitaxial bilayers of ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) and superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) have been grown on single-crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The Manganese magnetization profile across the FM layer has been determined with high spatial resolution at low temperatures by X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity (XRMR). It is found that not only the adjacent superconductor but also the substrate underneath influences the magnetization of the LCMO film at the interfaces at low temperatures. Both effects can be investigated individually by XRMR.

We show detailed magnetic absorption spectroscopy results of an in situ cleaved high quality single crystal of magnetite. In addition the experimental setup was carefully optimized to reduce drift, self absorption, and offset phenomena as far as possible. In strong contradiction to recently published data, our observed orbital moments are nearly vanishing and the spin moments are quite close to the integer values proposed by theory. We have measured the V 2p3/2 and O 1s x-ray absorption spectra of single crystal V2O5 and V6O13 and compared to linear combinations of atomic orbitals (LCAO) density of states (DOS) calculations. The spectra change dramatically with incident angle. The use of polarized light and a single crystal limits the number of transitions possible, revealing spectral features that cannot be resolved on polycrystals (angle-integrated). The measured O 1s and V 2p3/2 spectra agree with the projected unoccupied O 2p and V 3d DOS respectively, indicating that atomic and solid state effects, including V-O hybridization, must be included to adequately describe the spectra., Comment: PostScript, 9 pages, 3 figures
