Field observation and numerical simulations were carried out to evaluate the hydraulic relationship between the shallow and deep aquifer of a High Plains Aquifer system, in which shallow and deep aquifers are separated by an aquitard. Pumping from the lower aquifer resulted in a small drawdown in the upper aquifer and a larger drawdown in the aquitard; pumping from the shallow aquifer caused a small drawdown in the aquitard and the deep aquifer. Analysis of pumping test data gives the values of the hydraulic conductivity of the aquitard and the deep aquifer. Long-term observation of groundwater levels in the shallow and deep aquifers showed that a strong downward hydraulic gradient was maintained during an irrigation season. Numerical simulations were used to calculate the induced leakage of water from the shallow to the deep aquifer. Water budget analyses suggested that after pumping continues for a couple of days, the leakage from the overlying layers begins to supply the majority of the withdrawal from the deep aquifer. However, the induced leakage from the upper shallow aquifer can travel only a few meters into the aquitard, and it can not reach the lower aquifer during a 90 day pumping period. The major portion of the induced leakage occurred during the pumping period, but a small leakage can continue as a residual effect after the pumping period. The vertical hydraulic conductivity of the aquitard plays a major role in partitioning the ratio of the induced leakage for the pumping and after-pumping periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ideological underpinning of the animal welfare/animal rights movement is not a recent development, but rather the result of a revolutionary change in Western man's perception of the natural world between 1500 and 1800. In 1500, these basic perceptions were as follows: (1) the world was created for man's sake and all other species were subordinate to his wishes, (2) man's stance toward other species was essentially that of subjugation or conquest, (3) humans were absolutely unique and separate from the rest of creation. By 1800, these basic perceptions had been fundamentally altered to reflect the following: (1) the world did not exist for nor was it created for man alone, (2) man's stance toward the natural world and especially toward other animals was that of stewardship, and animals were within the sphere of moral concern, (3) man was a superior animal, although the basis for this superiority was not entirely clear, and was related to all other animals through physiologic similarities and the powers of feeling and sensation. The conventional methods of determining the analyzing power of a Mott detector for electron-polarization measurement are not very accurate. That is why alternative methods have recently been discussed. The present paper shows how a Mott detector can be calibrated with an uncertainty of ±1% using the circular polarization of impact radiation from helium atoms that are excited by polarized electrons. The retarding-field-type Mott analyzer, its performance, and the calibration procedure are described in detail. Accurate data of the circular light polarization that may be used for absolute electron polarimetry are given at electron energies of 23.3 and 26 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mitchell-Riley syndrome (MRS) is caused by recessive mutations in the regulatory factor X6 gene ( RFX6 ) and is characterised by pancreatic hypoplasia and neonatal diabetes. To determine why individuals with MRS specifically lack pancreatic endocrine cells, we micro-CT imaged a 12-week-old foetus homozygous for the nonsense mutation RFX6 c.1129C>T, which revealed loss of the pancreas body and tail. From this foetus, we derived iPSCs and show that differentiation of these cells in vitro proceeds normally until generation of pancreatic endoderm, which is significantly reduced. We additionally generated an RFX6 HA reporter allele by gene targeting in wild-type H9 cells to precisely define RFX6 expression and in parallel performed in situ hybridisation for RFX6 in the dorsal pancreatic bud of a Carnegie stage 14 human embryo. Both in vitro and in vivo , we find that RFX6 specifically labels a subset of PDX1-expressing pancreatic endoderm. Background: Current guidelines for preparticipation screening of competitive athletes in the US include a comprehensive history and physical examination. The objective of this study was to determine the incremental value of electrocardiography and echocardiography added to a screening program consisting of history and physical examination in college athletes., Methods: Competitive collegiate athletes at a single university underwent prospective collection of medical history, physical examination, 12-lead electrocardiography, and 2-dimensional echocardiography. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were classified as normal, mildly abnormal, or distinctly abnormal according to previously published criteria. Eligibility for competition was determined using criteria from the 36(th) Bethesda Conference on Eligibility Recommendations for Competitive Athletes with Cardiovascular Abnormalities., Results: In 964 consecutive athletes, ECGs were classified as abnormal in 334 (35%), of which 95 (10%) were distinctly abnormal. Distinct ECG abnormalities were more common in men than women (15% vs 6%, P<.001) as well as black compared with white athletes (18% vs 8%, P<.001). Echocardiographic and electrocardiographic findings initially resulted in exclusion of 9 athletes from competition, including 1 for long QT syndrome and 1 for aortic root dilatation; 7 athletes with Wolff-Parkinson-White patterns were ultimately cleared for participation. (Four received further evaluation and treatment, and 3 were determined to not need treatment.) After multivariable adjustment, black race was a statistically significant predictor of distinctly abnormal ECGs (relative risk 1.82, 95% confidence interval, 1.22-2.73; P=.01)., Conclusions: Distinctly abnormal ECGs were found in 10% of athletes and were most common in black men. Noninvasive screening using both electrocardiography and echocardiography resulted in identification of 9 athletes with important cardiovascular conditions, 2 of whom were excluded from competition. The extensive use of mobile phone communication has raised public concerns about adverse health effects of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in recent years. A central issue in this discussion is the question whether EMFs enhance the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here we report an investigation on the influence of a generic UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) signal on barrier tightness, transport processes and the morphology of porcine brain microvascular endothelial cell cultures (PBEC) serving as an in vitro model of the BBB. An exposure device with integrated online monitoring system was developed for simultaneous exposure and measuring of transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) to determine the tightness of the BBB. PBEC were exposed continuously for up to 84 h at an average electric-field strength of 3.4-34 V/m (maximum 1.8 W/kg) ensuring athermal conditions. We did not find any evidence of RF-field-induced disturbance of the function of the BBB. After and during exposure, the tightness of the BBB quantified by 14C-sucrose and serum albumin permeation as well as by TEER remained unchanged compared to sham-exposed cultures. Permeation of transporter substrates at the BBB as well as the localization and integrity of the tight-junction proteins occludin and ZO1 were not affected either.

Facial plastic surgery is an intervention that some have proposed to improve the physical functioning, appearance, and social acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome. Our purpose in this study was to examine the opinions of parents of children with Down syndrome about this practice. Two hundred and fifty parents responded with usable surveys and were generally familiar with the practice, yet the majority of respondents did not support the surgery. The literature on this topic is reviewed, and related issues are discussed.
