The research was conducted to evaluate the possibility of using algae enriched with Cr(III) ions as a feed additive for horses. As a sorbent, macroalga Cladophora glomerata was chosen. The results of the kinetic and equilibrium experiments on biosorption of Cr(III) ions are presented. The pseudo-second order model was used for the description of kinetics. Equilibrium of biosorption process was described by Langmuir model. The effect of biosorbent dose: 0.1–1.0 g·L-1, initial metal ions concentration: 100–300 mg·L-1 and pH: 3–5 on the biosorption capacity in a batch system was evaluated. These factors played a significant role in affecting the biosorption capacity of biosorbent and the rate constant. Optimal pH for biosorption was 5, biosorbent dose 0.1 g·L-1, initial concentration of Cr(III) ions 300 mg·L-1. The maximum biosorption capacity determined from Langmuir equation was 107.5 mg·g-1 (for CS 1.0 g·L-1, pH 5). The experiments were also performed in a column system and they showed that almost 100% of Cr(III) ions were absorbed after 200 minutes. The FTIR and SEM-EDX technique confirmed binding of Cr(III) ions by the algal biomass. Due to very good biosorption properties, Cladophora glomerata can be considered as a carrier of microelement ions in animal feeding.

Background: Very-low-birthweight (VLBW) neonates (<1500g) comprise approximately 1% of liveborn infants in Poland. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common complication of prematurity. This study aimed to determine how many VLBW neonates treated in the participating units needed surgical correction of PDA, and to evaluate the incidence of various types of postoperative infections and their microbiology.Methods: Observational study in five neonatology departments by the Polish Neonatology Surveillance Network, involving 2039 VLBW newborns of whom 103 (5.1%) required surgical PDA ligation. Continuous infection surveillance was conducted between 2009 and 2013; infections were defined based on Gastmeier's criteria.Results: PDA surgery was required significantly more frequently in infants from multiple pregnancies, and where labour was complicated by amnionitis. Surgical PDA correction was performed, on average, at 19 days of life. The incidence of infection was 48.5% (N = 50), and the most common infections were bloodstream infection (26.2%) and pneumonia (22.3%). A correlation was observed between the day on which the procedure was performed and the time of infection: the earlier the neonate underwent PDA surgery, the earlier the infection manifested (P = 0.032). A high CRIB score and chorioamnionitis contributed significantly to the presence of infection.Conclusion: The later the PDA surgery was performed, the later the infection occurred. The incidence of infection after correction of PDA among VLBW neonates was comparable with the incidence of infection among all hospitalized VLBW neonates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Baltic seaweeds were used to obtain aqueous extracts (E) through changing initial pH of deionised water added to algal biomass (EpH3·H2O, EpH7·H2O, and EpH10·H2O) and through changing pH of the mixture of algae and deionised water (EpH3, EpH7, and EpH10). Algal extracts were characterized in terms of the concentration of polyphenols and micro- and macroelements. The highest concentration of polyphenols was determined in extract EpH3 and the lowest in extract EpH10·H2O. It was found that the obtained extracts had similar concentrations of elements (except EpH3). The phytotoxicity of algal extracts (0.5, 2.5, and 10%) was examined in the germination tests on Lepidium sativum. No phytotoxic effects were observed. It was found that they had beneficial effects on the cultivated plants (length and weight). The best biostimulant effect was observed in the groups treated with EpH3 (2.5%), EpH7 (2.5%), and EpH7 (10%). The dry weight of plants was similar in all the groups. Algal extract also improved the multielemental composition of plant. The greatest concentration of total chlorophyll in plants was obtained by using extract EpH10·H2O, 0.5%.
