Abstract

Owing to the growing concern of global warming and over-dependence on fossil fuels, there has been a huge interest in last years in the deployment of Photovoltaic (PV) systems for generating electricity. The output power of a PV array greatly depends, among other parameters, on solar irradiation. However, solar irradiation has an intermittent nature and suffers from rapid fluctuations. This creates challenges when integrating PV systems in the electricity grid and calls for accurate forecasting methods of solar irradiance. In this paper, we propose a triple exponential-smoothing based forecasting methodology for intra-hour forecasting of the solar irradiance at future lead times. We use time-series data of measured solar irradiance, together with clear-sky solar irradiance, to forecast solar irradiance up-to a period of 20 minutes. The numerical evaluation is performed using 1 year of weather data, collected by a PV outdoor test facility on the roof of an office building in Utrecht University, Utrecht, The Netherlands. We benchmark our proposed approach with two other common forecasting approaches: persistence forecasting and average forecasting. Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the technologies of Industry 4.0 that has been contributing to the development of different manufacturing industries. The integration of sustainability concepts into additive manufacturing has been gaining attention among researchers. This integration is essential in the development of AM technologies and can be a significant asset in terms of decision making for organizations. This work aims to present a concise literature review on the integration of decision making, especially multi-criteria decision making, and sustainability into the AM environment. The literature on this topic currently possesses a total of fifteen documents, which were analyzed in this work. Some developments on this topic have been achieved in domains such as material selection, process selection and challenges, and drivers' analysis of sustainable AM. This review shows that even though there has been an effort in recent years to integrate sustainability into additive manufacturing, there is still a long road to the development of this topic for the future, and so some recommendations for future research paths are presented. Abstract

Summary: In recent years, power electronics have been intensely contributing to the development and evolution of new structures for the processing of energy. They can be used in a wide range of applications ranging from power systems and electrical machines to electric vehicles and robot arm drives. In conjunction with the evolution of microprocessors and advanced control theories, power electronics are playing an increasingly essential role in our society. Thus, in order to cope with the obstacles lying ahead, this book presents a collection of original studies and modeling methods which were developed and published in the field of electrical energy conditioning and control by using circuits and electronic devices, with an emphasis on power applications and industrial control. Researchers have contributed 19 selected and peer-reviewed papers covering a wide range of topics by addressing a wide variety of themes, such as motor drives, AC-DC and DC-DC converters, multilevel converters, varistors, and electromagnetic compatibility, among others. The overall result is a book that represents a cohesive collection of inter-/multidisciplinary works regarding the industrial applications of power electronics.

Abstract

The industrial progress over these years has led to fast, goodquality production. Despite this progress, the impacts related to such type of production, whether these are social, economic, or environmental, have not been, at times, studied extensively. The industry realized the importance of a greener approach and as a result, new sustainable technologies, such as additive manufacturing (AM), have emerged. To generalize the environmental benefits of AM over traditional manufacturing, methodologies like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are used. The proposed work has the intent of understanding and quantifying the environmental impacts associated with a particular AM technique for the fabrication of metal parts, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). An LCA is conducted and, considering the same circumstances, the environmental impacts related to the production of 3 different metal parts are analysed. In order to understand the results obtained, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling, which is also used for the fabrication of metal parts, is equally considered. In this particular application, when compared to CNC Milling, WAAM proves to have a 12%-47% in the environmental impact, depending upon the geometry considered. The environmental hotspot identified for both processes is the production of the raw material.
